Here Are the Best Red Carpet Photos From the 2024 Billboard No. 1s Party

The second annual Billboard No. 1s Party kicked off the upcoming 2024 Billboard Music Awards on Tuesday night (Nov. 19), and the star-studded event took over The h.wood Group’s Keys nightclub on Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip.

Among the A-list attendees included AJ McLean and Howie Dorough from Backstreet Boys, A$AP Ferg, Bella Poarch, K-pop group BEWAVE, Flavor Flav, FloyyMenor, Jake Shane, Tiffany Haddish and Zedd, among others. Ferg was also in attendance, fresh off the release of his new album Darold.

Tres Generaciones Tequila is the official tequila of Billboard and the 2024 Billboard Music Awards, and the bash included specialty curated cocktails, including Trespresso Martini, The Tres ‘73 and Tres Generaciones Añejo.

‘Wicked’ Week Boosts Original Broadway Cast Album & Select Ariana Grande Tracks 

After decades of development, Wicked is finally hitting the silver screen! On Friday (Nov. 2), the film adaptation of the beloved Tony-winning Broadway musical will open in theaters across the U.S. In the lead up to the film, which will star Grammy winners Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (Galinda), fans have been turning to the original Broadway cast album to hold them over.

According to Luminate, the 2003 Wicked cast recording has risen 60% in streaming activity from between the first two weeks of November. During Nov. 1-7, the album earned 4.9 million official on-demand U.S. streams, with that figure jumping to 7.8 million during Nov. 8-14. Led by musical theatre icons Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, the original Wicked cast recording features several songs that have earned significant streaming boosts as the film adaptation draws nearer. 

“Defying Gravity,” which Erivo and Grande will perform to close the film, is up 47% streams from 909,000 official on-demand U.S. streams (Nov. 1-7) to 1.34 million (Nov. 8-14). Emmy nominee Jonathan Bailey will take on the role of Fiyero in the 2024 film, performing “Dancing Through Life,” which is up 62% in streams. The lengthy track, which was originally performed by Norbert Leo Butz, earned over 453,000 official on-demand U.S. streams during Nov. 8-14. “No One Mourns the Wicked,” the musical’s moving opening number, is also up 63% in streams, collecting over 417,000 official on-demand U.S. streams during Nov. 8-14. 

The anticipation for Grande’s take on “Popular” has also spurred streaming gains for Chenoweth’s original. “Popular” is up 64% in streams from 562,000 official on-demand U.S. streams (Nov. 1-7) to 923,000 (Nov. 8-14). On her 2013 Billboard 200-topping debut album Yours Truly, Grande included a collaboration with MIKA titled “Popular Song” that interpolates elements of the Wicked classic. That duet is up 66% in streams from 113,000 official on-demand U.S. streams (Nov. 1-7) to 189,000 (Nov. 8-14). 

Grande also covered “The Wizard and I” for 2019’s A Very Wicked Halloween 15-year anniversary special, and that version was tacked onto a commemorative re-release of the Wicked cast album. Grande’s rendition of the showstopper – which will be performed by Erivo in the film – pulled over 22,000 streams during Nov. 1-7. The following week (Nov. 8-14), that number jumped by a whipping 82% to over 40,000 streams. The original version of “The Wizard And I” is performed by Menzel and the late Carole Shelley, who originated the role of Madame Morrible that Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh will assume in the film. Their version jumped 64% in streaming activity from 294,000 official on-demand U.S. streams (Nov. 1-7) to 483,000 (Nov. 8-14). 

As crowds flock to Wicked expect to see more gains for the original Broadway cast recording – and a notable debut for the film soundtrack, which will arrive on Nov. 22 through Republic and Verve. — KYLE DENIS

Well If You Told Me You Were Boxing: Jake Paul Lends a Hand to a Phil Collins Classic

It was one of the most surreal (and most watched) sporting events of the year: the 27-year-old influencer-turned-pugilist Jake Paul taking on 58-year-old all-time boxing legend Mike Tyson in a Netflix-streamed Friday night fight (Nov. 15). Though many watching wanted to see the former undisputed heavyweight champion give the YouTube superstar a spanking, Paul ended up winning the much-hyped bout in a unanimous decision. Another less-likely winner from the evening, however, was another legend even more veteran than Tyson: U.K. pop and rock great Phil Collins.

Collins ended up soundtracking part of the evening, as Paul used the Genesis frontman’s eternal 1981 solo debut single “In the Air Tonight” as his entrance music – likely a winking pre-ring jab at the champ, who sang (and drummed) along to the song in a famous scene from the 2009 comedy The Hangover. Whatever Paul’s intent, the music did its job: Not only did he win the fight, but “Tonight” totaled 779,000 official on-demand U.S. streams over the following Saturday and Sunday, up 47% from the equivalent period the prior week, according to Luminate. (Tyson’s own walkout song, “Murdergram” (by Jay-Z, DMX and Ja Rule, recording collectively as Murder Inc.), was up 185% to 9,000 streams.)

Another non-entrance song seeing related gains this week? DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince’s 1989 hit “I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson,” which racked up nearly 15,000 streams combined over Friday and Saturday, up from under 1,000 over the same period the prior week. – ANDREW UNTERBERGER

PartyNextDoor Eyes Eleventh Hour 2024 Hit with a Nine-Year-Old Leak 

With PartyNextDoor 4, PartyNextDoor became one of the select few artists to reach the Billboard 200’s top 10 with a newly released R&B album – but his latest hit isn’t even on that project. 

“Dreamin” originally leaked alongside a slew of other PND tracks back in 2015, but thanks to a viral unofficial remix from rising artist Zayskii, the Grammy-nominated star uploaded the original track to DSPs two weeks ago (Nov. 3). During the first week of the month (Nov. 1-7), “Dreamin” earned 2.42 million official on-demand U.S. streams, according to Luminate. By the following week (Nov. 8-14), that figure ballooned 100% to 4.85 million streams. 

Zayskii (@onlyzayskii) first uploaded a snippet of his remix on Oct. 18, with a post captioned “Partynextdoor remix?” To date, the snippet has earned 6.3 million views and over 1.1 million likes; there are now over 61,000 posts soundtracked by that snippet.  

With the original version finally on DSPs, “Dreamin” will likely continue to grow. Time will tell if that buzzy remix also gets an official release. — KD

Doechii Experiences the ‘Heal’ing Powers of Grammy Nominations & Live Moments

It’s been a great couple of weeks for Florida rapper-singer Doechii, whose Alligator Bites Never Heal mixtape was released to strong reviews but little commercial fanfare back in August. She’s belatedly getting her due for the set this month, however – particularly with the nominations she landed for next February’s Grammys: best rap album for Bites and best rap performance for its lead single “Nissan Altima.”  

Those nominations, announced Nov. 8, have proven well-timed for Doechii, who has since wrapped her accompanying tour for the album and performed at the Tyler, the Creator-curated Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival (Nov. 16) – all of which has driven extra ears to her recent set and its lead single, which has also enjoyed some extra TikTok attention lately. The album drew 5.9 million official on-demand U.S. streams this past tracking week (ending Nov. 14), according to Luminate – a 40% gain from the prior week – while “Nissan Altima” was up 29% to over 1.7 million streams on its own. 

The good momentum should just keep growing for Doechii through this Friday’s Musicians on Musicians event at New York’s Apollo Theater, which will see her speaking and performing alongside Brittany Howard, Busta Rhymes and GloRilla. — AU

Denzel Washington spoke candidly about having issues with alcohol, detailing his reasons and his sobriety in an interview.

Veteran actor Denzel Washington revealed his past issues with alcohol in a far-ranging interview for Esquire Magazine’s Winter 2024 issue. The interview was released in conjunction with promotion for his starring role in Gladiator II.

The Academy Award-winner detailed how he had a preference for wine and talked about drinking due to being “bitter” after losing out on the Oscar in 1999 for his portrayal of wrongly-imprisoned boxer Ruben “Hurricane” Carter in The Hurricane to controversial actor Kevin Spacey for his role in American Beauty. “Wine is very tricky,” Washington said. “It’s very slow. It ain’t like, boom, all of a sudden. And part of it was we built this big house in 1999 with a ten-thousand-bottle wine cellar, and I learned to drink the best. So I’m gonna drink my ’61s and my ’82s and whatever we had.”

The Equalizer actor stressed that it never interfered with his acting work because of his self-imposed restraint. “I’d call Gil Turner’s Fine Wines & Spirits on Sunset Boulevard and say, Send me two bottles, the best of this or that. And my wife’s saying, Why do you keep ordering just two? I said, Because if I order more, I’ll drink more. So I kept it to two bottles, and I would drink them both over the course of the day,” he recalled, continuing: “I never drank while I was working or preparing. I would clean up, go back to work—I could do both. However many months of shooting, bang, it’s time to go. Then, boom.Three months of wine, then time to go back to work.”

Denzel Washington Reveals He Is Now Sober

Washington would remark that the fifteen-year period until he gave up alcohol altogether did “a lot of damage to the body.” But he stated that he’s been sober for ten years as of next month. “I haven’t had a thimble’s worth since,” he said. Washington cited his faith and getting more health-conscious with the help of Lenny Kravitz, who helped him get a physical trainer.

Bob Dylan Biopic, Documentaries About Celine Dion & Luther Vandross Nominated for AARP’s 2025 Movies for Grownups Awards: Full List

Music films and documentaries are sprinkled among the nominees for AARP’s 24th annual Movies for Grownups Awards, which was established to encourage films and TV shows that resonate with older viewers.

A Complete Unknown, the upcoming James Mangold film about Bob Dylan in the 1960s starring Timothée Chalamet, is nominated for best picture/best movie for grownups. It is competing with Conclave, Emilia Pérez, Gladiator II and September 5. (The latter concerns a hostage crisis at the 1972 Olympics in Munich.)

Documentaries about Celine Dion and Luther Vandross are among the nominees for best documentary. I Am: Celine Dion, directed by Irene Taylor, focuses on the singer’s struggle with Stiff Person Syndrome. Luther Vandross: Never Too Much — directed by Dawn Porter and featuring Jamie Foxx, Mariah Carey and Patti LaBelle — traces the late R&B star’s life and career.

The other nominees in the documentary category are Piece by Piece, directed by Morgan Neville, a journey through the life of Pharrell Williams, told through the lens of LEGO animation; Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, directed by Peter Ettedgui, which tracks actor Christopher Reeve’s pivot from film star to activist for disability rights following a tragic 1995 horse-riding accident; and Will & Harper, directed by Josh Greenbaum, an intimate portrayal of friendship starring Will Ferrell and Harper Steele, friends of 30 years who go on a cross-country road trip.

The Oscars will announce its shortlist of 15 films eligible for best documentary feature on Dec. 17.

The annual Movies for Grownups Awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, Calif. Alan Cumming, the Tony- and Primetime Emmy Award-winning host of the competition show The Traitors, will return as the host of the show, which will be broadcast by Great Performances on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT on PBS and its website, as well as the PBS app.

Gaga and Mars spent eight weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 and reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Die With a Smile” this year. The song recently topped Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart. Gaga now boasts eight career Pop Airplay No. 1s and Mars, 10 – tying him with Justin Bieber for the most among solo males.

Additionally, “Die With a Smile” notched two Grammy nominations for the 2025 ceremony, including song of the year and best pop duo/group recording.

Shortly after the project dropped over the summer, the Joker star and “Uptown Funk!” hitmaker gave “Die With a Smile” its live debut at Mars’ concert at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. Gaga then took to Instagram to thank fans for their support of the song. “Watching fans from all over the world celebrate this music has meant so much to me, to see the words of the song touch your heart and the video provoke this huge wave of dancing and fun is beautiful to watch and I’m so grateful,” she wrote alongside a series of photos, in which she’s seen in her retro-style attire from the track’s accompanying music video. “Thank you thank you thank you for loving our song i love you for real and i hope the message of love we shared will continue to create special moments for you all in your lives—I know it does in mine every day. Snoop Dogg Says Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’ ‘Unified the West’

Snoop Dogg stayed neutral during the rap battle that popped off earlier this year between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. However, he’s a big fan of the latter’s knockout blow “Not Like Us.”

Sitting alongside Dr. Dre during a recent sitdown with Drink Champs in Vegas at ComplexCon, Snoop said Kendrick’s anthem united not only West Coast rappers, but also rival gangs.

“Let me tell you what that record did do. It unified the West,” he said. “So, it may have been disrespectful, but it’s hip-hop, so it’s part of hip-hop. I chose no sides because I have no individual cause. That’s a grown man going against a grown man. But what it did do was unite the West, and make everybody out here start looking at each other like how much love we got for each other.”

He added, “The Bloods had a peace treaty. You had certain Crip gangs that came together and became real friends as opposed to being enemies. So, that record did a lot for us on the West as far as uniting, so we should speak on that.”

He said something similar after Kendrick’s Pop Out concert in June. “Sending a big shout-out to K. Dot and all the homies in the West that stood together, unified, organized in peace, love,” he said in a video as he was in Canada. “That was beautiful, that was fun to watch. Beautiful to see all my peoples come together. And K. Dot, you are the King of the West. That’s the kind of sh—t kings do, we unite, bring people together.”

Snoop was inadvertently included in the battle early on when Drake decided to release “Taylor Made Freestyle” featuring A.I. versions of Snoop and 2Pac‘s voices in order to get a response out of Kendrick. That plan backfired, though, as the Tupac Shakur estate threatened to sue, forcing the Toronto rapper to take the song down.

The West Coast legend had a funny response once he got wind of the diss track, posting a video on social media of himself asking questions and being confused. “They did what? When? How? Are you sure? Y’all have a good night,” he said. “Why everybody calling my phone, blowing me up? What the f—k? What happened? What’s going on? I’m going back to bed. Good night.”

Snoop and Dre have been working together once again and are releasing an album soon. Missionary will hit shelves on Dec. 13.

Family Of Malcolm X Files $10OM Wrongful Death Lawsuit, Alleges Government Involvement

Malcolm X, the civil rights leader who later transformed into a global activist, was assassinated in 1965 just as his messages for human rights began to resonate with the wider public. The family of Malcolm X has filed a $100 million wrongful death lawsuit against the United States government, alleging its involvement in his passing.

As reported late last week by ABC News, civil rights attorney Ben Crump was flanked by members of Malcolm X’s family and announced the $100 million lawsuit while addressing a media gathering in New York where the leader was gunned down.

According to Ilyasah Shabazz, the daughter of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X), said that the family and their legal team have uncovered damning evidence that connects the NYPD and FBI worked in concert to kill her father.

“We fought primarily for our mother, who was here,” Ms. Shabazz said referencing the late Betty Shabazz while speaking at the site of the former Audubon Ballroom. “My mother was pregnant when she came here to see her husband speak, someone who she just admired totally and to witness this horrific assassination of her husband.”

Crump added in his statements to the press that the lawsuit targets an alleged scheme from the authorities to keep the truth of X’s death under wraps. In the lawsuit, a witness by the name of Mustafa Hassan claims that when he and others tried to stop the individuals who carried out the assassination, NYPD officers intervened to allegedly help the suspects escape. Hassan was reportedly never questioned by investigators on the scene despite him giving an account of the incident.

Further, the family’s legal team says it has two affidavits from a pair of X’s bodyguards who claim they were jailed by an undercover NYPD officer one week before the slaying was carried out and were kept from X’s side to guarantee the job would be done.

The FBI and NYPD have declined to comment on the lawsuit according to the outlet.

Sony Music Settles Lawsuit Claiming Columbia Discriminated Against White Job Applicants

Sony Music has settled a lawsuit filed by a former assistant to Columbia Records chief executive Ron Perry who claimed she was forced to resign after pushing back on hiring practices that allegedly discriminated against white applicants.

In a filing Tuesday (Nov. 19), attorneys for both sides told a federal judge that they had “reached a settlement in principle” to resolve the lawsuit, in which Patria Paulino claimed she was told she could “only hire Black candidates.” Sony had called those accusations “contradictory and false” and was actively seeking to have the case dismissed when the settlement was reached.

The specific terms of the agreement, including whether any money exchanged hands, were not disclosed in court filings. A spokesperson for Sony declined to comment on Wednesday (Nov. 20); an attorney for Paulino did not return a request for comment.

Paulino sued Sony and Perry in February, claiming she had been effectively terminated as retaliation because she pushed back on race-conscious hiring practices.

After being hired in late 2022, Paulino claimed that she was repeatedly told she could not hire white candidates for a vacant assistant role in Perry’s office. She says that Perry had been hit with “multiple racial discrimination complaints by former employees” and that he and the company wanted to “have more color in his office.”

Despite the directives to aim for diversity, Paulino’s lawsuit claimed she “continued to recommend qualified Caucasian applicants” for the role. At one point, when she advanced a particular white candidate, she says that another Sony employee told her in writing: “We can’t hire another white Jewish girl unfortunately.”

The lawsuit came in the wake of a high-profile U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year that outlawed the use of race-conscious admissions in higher education, commonly known as “affirmative action.” Though that ruling didn’t directly deal with hiring or with the state laws at issue in Paulino’s case, it has led to overall increased scrutiny of corporate practices aimed at diversity, equity and inclusion.

A week after Paulino filed her case, Sony asked the judge to toss it out of court. Far from being effectively terminated, Sony said she had instead “voluntarily resigned after receiving unfavorable performance feedback.” The label said she had filed her case simply “to harass her former employer and boss” with a “contradictory and false” lawsuit.

“She alleges … that defendants both discriminated against her because they preferred white employees but also constructively discharged her because she would not play along with their preference for non-white employees,” the label’s lawyers wrote, adding the italics themselves for emphasis. “In reality, plaintiff worked for Sony … for less than five months, performed poorly, and was a willing participant in the entirely legal hiring practices she now alleges were discriminatory.”

Tyla Drops Acoustic-Guitar Driven Ballad ‘Tears’: Listen to the New Single

Tyla dropped her new single “Tears” for Coke Studio 2024 on Wednesday (Nov. 20) via FAX and Epic Records.

Produced by Stargate, the acoustic guitar-driven ballad strikes a chord with anyone who’s going through it and needs a shoulder to cry on. And the “Water” hitmaker sticks to her aquatic theme. “I’m a river you can’t float in/ I would never let you drown/ When your eyes turn into oceans/ I’ll be there before the first drop hits the ground,” she sings in the second verse.

The Grammy-winning popiano star, who recently picked up three awards at the 2024 MTV EMAs, will perform the track live for the first time during a special hometown performance in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Dec. 4 hosted by Coke Studio in collaboration with Spotify.

“My music is all about creating connections, sharing culture and influences from all over the world, and I know fans will feel that in ‘Tears,’” she said in a press release. “I can’t wait to see everyone, including my fans, friends and family, in Johannesburg and share this unforgettable experience together.”

Concertgoers will have the opportunity to experience Coke Studio through an exclusive fan experience, which will include autographed merchandise tables, product sampling and prize giveaways. Fans who can’t make it out to Joburg can watch Tyla’s performance on a global livestream.

The 2024 edition of Coca-Cola’s longstanding global Coke Studio program features music created by artists in collaboration with Coke itself. Promoted and distributed by those artists’ labels, the music is supported by label partner Universal Music Group (UMG), which is assisting with promotional and playlist strategy.

Rosé and Bruno Mars’ “APT.” hits No. 1 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100, becoming the first song by a Western act to rule the Japan song chart in 11 and a half years.

“APT.” debuted at No. 96 on the chart released Oct. 23 after dropping digitally on Oct. 18 and has continued to perform increasingly well, especially in streaming. Streams for the track have earned a 107% increase this week compared to the week before, while downloads gained 113%, radio 102%, and video 110%. The pop-punk duet rises a notch to No. 1 on the Japan Hot 100 dated Nov. 20, becoming only the fifth song by Western artists to top this chart.

CUTIE STREET’s “Kawaii dakeja damedesuka?” rises 19-2. The debut single by the ASOBISYSTEM girl group dropped digitally on Sept. 8 and bowed at No. 84 on the chart dated Oct. 16. The track gained popularity in video and streaming, topping the TikTok Weekly Top 20 chart for five consecutive weeks. The CD version arrived Nov. 13 and launched with 61,384 copies. The track comes in at No. 5 for physical sales, No. 38 for downloads, No. 13 for streaming, and No. 9 for video views this week.

Creepy Nuts’ “Otonoke” is at No. 3. While the track holds its position from last week, points have increased: streaming has gained 105%, downloads 102%, radio airplay 159%, karaoke 104%, and video has also increased slightly as well. The “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” hip-hop duo consisting of R-shitei and DJ Matsunaga is set to perform at the prestigious year-end live music program, NHK’s 75th Kohaku Uta Gassen.

NEWS’s “Acchi muite hoi” debuts at No. 4. The title track of their 31st single is being featured as the theme song for the drama Takasugi-san-chi no Obento, starring member Keiichiro Koyama. Looking at the metrics of the chart’s measurement, the track rules sales with 137,887 first-week copies, which is more than the group’s previous single, and comes in at No. 71 for downloads and No. 12 for radio.

Elsewhere on the Japan Hot 100, Chanmina’s “FOREVER” debuts at No. 33 after hitting No. 1 for radio. The theme song for the drama Monster was produced by South Korean rapper/music producer GRAY, who also worked with the trilingual rapper on her fourth album Naked.
