Karol G Accepts Woman of the Year Award | Billboard Women in Music 2024

Karol G accepts the Woman of the Year award at Billboard’s Women in Music 2024.

Karol G:
First of all, it’s an amazing surprise that Sofía Vergara is giving me this award, I love it. Buenas noches a todos. I’m super honored to be here today. Oh my God, [this] might be the most significant and important recognition of all my career, this is super special. This is Woman of the Year, but this is the first time ever a Latina is named the Woman of the Year. So, I have to give my speech in Spanish, of course.

Well, this is Women in Music so I’m going to talk about us. I have to start first by telling you that for years and years, I lived very disappointed with the fact of being a woman. I found myself on the road with so many rejections and so many lost opportunities. Because of that, I wondered why I was not born a man to exploit all this love, this desire and passion I felt for music. Where would all this desire I had to eat the world have gone if it was assumed that, as a woman, I could not achieve it? For a long time, I believed that story. I believed that this was not for me. So many times I was told that I could not make it and I always think of the number of people who leave their dreams behind and leave their dreams aside for that reason, for the perception of others but not for the real dream they have and the desire they have inside. In the midst of my desire, in the midst of wanting to make music even if it was just for me, I decided that if my environment did not change, I was the one who had to change and I was the one who was going to do it. And that I wasn’t going to let being a woman be an obstacle or define my capabilities, but that it was going to be my strength, it was going to be my motive and my reason. And every time I was told no, I found the strength and the desire and everything I needed to say: yes I can. In my mind I changed the “a woman can’t do it” to “look at this woman how she does it, look how a woman does it.”

Karol G’s “Amargura” lyrics

(Si te dicen que yo me estoy curando, es la verdad)

(Ey)
Ayer te vi
Aparentemente, estabas contento, estabas feliz

Ey
Esta canción
Que no me la pongan borracha, hijueputa
(O-O-Ovy On The Drums)
(Y aunque yo hago como si nada)

Sofía Vergara Presents Karol G With Woman of the Year | Billboard Women In Music 2024

Sofía Vergara presents Karol G with Woman of the Year at Billboard Women In Music 2024.

Sofía Vergara:
Good evening! I’m here tonight to present the Billboard Woman of the Year Award to La Bitchota, Karol G! Well, Karol G and I became very good friends while we were filming the TV series Griselda. Griselda was Karol G’s first acting role, and she would show up on set every day, ready to just dive in and to learn. And here’s the thing: She was so humble and she was so easy on the set that if you weren’t already a fan of her music, you would have no idea that she’s actually a world-famous mega music star with devoted fans all over the planet.

Billboard has recognized Karol with multiple awards over the years, including the Billboard Woman In Music Rulebreaker award in 2021. And since then, her career has skyrocketed. Just in the last year, Karol became the first woman and second artist ever to top the Billboard 200 with an all-Spanish language album, Mañana Será Bonito, she was also the top Woman Latin Artist on Billboard‘s year-end charts.

And let’s talk about the Grammys. Karol recently won album of the year at the Latin Grammys, and then she became the very first woman to win urban album of the year at the Grammy Awards a few weeks ago. She’s the first Latina and still one of only a few women to headline a global stadium tour, and was the highest grossing Latin touring artist of 2023. I was lucky enough to see her in concert and get to experience her soulful mix of reggaeton, pop, R&B. It was an experience that I’m never gonna forget, like tonight.

Our Woman of the Year! Give it up to the magnificent Woman of the Year.

Tems Accepts The Breakthrough Award | Billboard Women In Music 2024

Tems accepts the Breakthrough award at Billboard’s Women In Music 2024.

Tems:
I love you too. Oh my goodness. First of all, my heart hasn’t stopped beating for the past 30 minutes and my earring dropped. And I know, we’re all supposed to give speeches, I actually wrote one but forgot it everything completely.

One thing that is uniquely special to me is that I’m in a room full of amazing women, and I’m standing with a with a continent behind me, I’m standing with the people behind me. And it makes me feel like I’m part of something just being in this room. I want to dedicate this award to my mom, who is the first woman I ever met. And she really inspired me that no matter what you’re going through, that shouldn’t give you a reason not to champion everybody around you and I really want to use this opportunity to say that like to all the women in the room, in the world, that no matter what you’re going through, you should know you’re not alone. So even when you’re sad, even when you’re angry, there’s someone that is angry too. So uplift everybody around you because they need that like you and somebody is there for you. And I think it’s really important that we have each other. I know it’s corny to say, you know, support each other but it’s true. We we don’t have anybody else but ourselves. I mean, it’s the women thats got the women, trust me so thank you so much to my team. Thank you, God. Thank you to my family, my fans. Thank you, to my supporters. Thank you to everybody in this room for just being amazing and all the women that are here and being strong and God bless you all.

Savannah James Presents Tems With The Breakthrough Award | Billboard Women In Music 2024

Savannah James presents Tems with the Breakthrough Award at Billboard’s Women In Music 2024.

Savannah James:
Hi, everybody! You know, my mom always instilled a certain level of confidence and self assurance in me. I feel like that energy is just vibrating all around this room as we’ve had the opportunity to hear from these women who are constantly bringing their a game in such beautiful ways like Tems, the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Breakthrough award honoree.

In just a few short years since releasing her first EP “For Broken Ears,” this Nigerian singer/songwriter and record producer has captured the attention of fans all over the world. She earned her first Grammy with the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Wait For U.” Personal favorite. Her collaboration with Future & Drake. She was nominated for a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a Grammy for co-writing Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up” for the ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ soundtrack. But beyond the awards and the collaborations with everyone from Justin Bieber to Beyonce, it all comes back to that voice, rich, resignate, undeniable. Pair that with her effortless confidence, style and flow and you’ve got someone who’s gonna be here for a really long time. Congratulations to Tems on being honored with the Billboard Women in Music Breakthrough award.

Tems Performs ‘Not an Angel’ | Billboard Women In Music 2024

Tems performs “Not An Angel” at Billboard Women In Music 2024.

Read the lyrics below and stay tuned for more Tems news.

Tems’ “Not An Angel” lyrics

Ah yiy (ah, yeah)
Uh-uh, nah, nah (ah-ah)
Ah, yeah

I was a loner when I was with you
I would’ve given myself for you
Now I’m changin’ over, I’m movin’ on now
No turnin’ back, I can’t be with you

I don’t need you lookin’ for me (hey)
All you did was give me nothin’, oh nah
Overthinkin’ every mornin’, oh
Take me out your life, life

‘Cause I’m not an angel
I’m just a girl that knows the truth
And I couldn’t save you (nah)
You couldn’t see what I’ve been through
I’ll cut my losses in peace
I don’t need nothin’ else from you
‘Cause I’m not angel (angel, no)
I know I did all I could do

Don’t say you love me
Baby, I don’t need your lovin’
But I prefer, “I’m sorry”
All of a sudden you’re askin’ for me
You know your love don’t do nothin’ for me
Right now we’re not goin’ nowhere
Other than a graveyard, baby
You know your love don’t do nothin’ for me

I don’t need you lookin’ for me (hey, hey)
All you did was give me nothin’, oh nah
Overthinkin’ every mornin’ (mornin’), oh
Take me out your life, life, oh

‘Cause I’m not an angel
I’m just a girl that knows the truth
And I couldn’t save you (nah, nah)
You couldn’t see what I’ve been through (through)

So many girls around you, ’round you
They always callin’ you, “Baby” (’round you)
But they don’t love you, love you, love you
Baby, they always come around (’round you)
Always tryna call you, “Baby” (’round you)
But they don’t know you, know you, know you

‘Cause I’m not an angel
I’m just a girl that knows the truth
And I couldn’t save you
You couldn’t see what I’ve been through

Kylie Minogue Accepts The Icon Award | Billboard Women In Music 2024

Kylie Minogue accepts the Icon Award at Billboard’s Women In Music 2024.

This has just been getting up the stairs or for all of us getting through the rain today, that rain soaked entrance. Thanks so much. Oh, hi everyone. I love being in this room. And it’s ridiculous to say, but I have never been in a room like this a pure and vital celebration of women in music, and I’ve been one for 37 years. So, it is especially nice to be here and so wonderful to be in your company. Thank you, Billboard for this incredible honor and recognition.

On the one hand, be still my beating heart, on the one hand, it seems completely surreal. Like is this really happening? How did I get here? And then on the other hand simultaneously, I know the steps it took to get here physically and mentally navigating the highs, the lows, and trying to never lose sight of the in between the terra firma I also know there’s luck, fate, a calling and help. A lot of help from a lot of people over a very long time, in my case. So, thank you to anyone and everyone who has been there for me. My team, many of whom are here tonight. Predominantly women thank you so much. To my fans, wherever you may be, thank you I simply love you. You might go to this possible, I love your thank you.

Closer to home, thank you to my family, and especially my mom who is my icon and my best friend and trust me, you know this night is so inspiring. I will be calling her the second that gets my phone. I know tonight is all about celebrating but I thought on my way here I thought I’m gonna give a shout out to all the times. But we’re not peak moments. There were no fun. But those challenges the lows, the one with this stuff we’ve got to get through sometimes. I wanted to give a big shout out to all the terrible times. Thank you for teaching us that there are horrendous in the moment, but they happen and it’s how we navigate them and what we do with them. So I’m not looking forward to the next one, but it will come so thanks to all the moments that make up this free one. And finally, music I literally am I more and more and more in love with music all the time. So music I love you. And thank you so much. Have a great night everybody.

Bebe Rexha Presents Kylie Minogue With The Icon Award | Billboard Women In Music 2024

Bebe Rexha presents Kylie Minogue with the Icon award at Billboard’s Women In Music 2024.

Hi everyone, how are you feeling? I mean, what a night. It just keeps getting better and better. And it’s gonna get even better because I get to give out an award to an icon.

I grew up listening to her and she’s just one of my I mean, my favorite dance musician. Her name is Kylie Minogue. This extraordinary singer-songwriter, actress, model has been making music for over three decades, okay. She’s had hits on multiple Billboard charts, starting with her very first Hot 100 Top 10 in 1988. Okay, “The Local Motion.” Over the years, she’s charted seven songs on the Hot 100 and 11 albums on the Billboard 200. And it’s no wonder why we can’t get her out of our heads, ladies and gentlemen.

She’s honestly been an extraordinary isn’t extraordinary or extraordinary. It’s extraordinary, right? Whatever. She has been an amazing model for so many of us and she’s encouraging us to do what we love and to keep following our hearts, and she continues to innovate and break boundaries. Most recently actually beating me in this category but first ever Grammy give it out for best dance pop recording for “Padam Padam” and she said that “Padam Padam” is the sound of a heartbeat. And I just want to say one thing okay. Um, being a woman in the music business looking up to her and being in this category right for pop dance. I always feel like in the music business we’re always being judged by numbers, right? Our age, especially, as females our weight, and she beat all of us in a category and she’s 55 and she looks fucking amazing, okay. So I’m telling you right now numbers ages anything it doesn’t define you because she’s fucking winning Grammys and fucking beating all of us out here in dance music, okay?

So it is an honor to present this year’s Billboard Woman in Music Icon to someone who has captured our hearts year after year with her style and spirit and, of course, her sensational sound.

I mean, come on — she is queen. Make some noise for Kylie Minogue.

You got this girl. You got it? I mean, come on. Like are you serious?
