Looking Back at Past Billboard Woman of the Year Honorees: Beyoncé, Taylor Swift & More | Billboard News

Billboard takes a look back at the past Woman of the Year honorees at theBillboard Women in Music event.

Beyoncé
Thank you, Billboard, for this honor. I’m very humbled. Thank you.

Tetris Kelly
Every year, Billboard Women in Music honors some of the best to ever do it and none more important than our Woman of the Year. Today, we’re discussing a few of them — even one who has had this honor multiple times. Let’s hear it for the girls!

Beyoncé
My niche is empowering other women. They look up to you for more than just your music.

Tetris Kelly
The year was 2009. And the Woman of the Year was Beyoncé. The superstar stunned at the Pierre Hotel in New York and, at the time, she couldn’t believe the year she was having and was as humble as ever.

Beyoncé
I can’t believe all of the things I’ve been blessed to do this year. And I know it would not be possible without my family.

Tetris Kelly
Madonna is one of our most legendary honorees. She grabbed the award in 2016 and gave one of the event’s most talked-about speeches.

Madonna
People say that I’m so controversial. But I think the most controversial thing I have ever done is to stick around.

Tetris Kelly
Though the world is currently in their Taylor Swift era, we honored her as a Woman of the Year in both 2011 and 2014. But that’s not it. In 2019, she became our Woman of the Decade.

Taylor Swift
What does it mean to be the Woman of this Decade? Somewhere right now, your future Woman of the Year is probably sitting in a piano lesson or in a girls choir. And today, right now, we need to take care of her.

Tetris Kelly
What will happen this year when we honor Karol G? Tune in to Women In Music on March 7th at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. OT on BillboardWomenInMusic.com.

Billboard Explains: Why Karol G Is the Woman of the Year

Karol G:
If you ask me what my dream is, what is my main dream? That the world knows your name — that would be awesome.

Narrator:
Karol G is rocking the Billboard charts, and Billboard‘s Woman of the Year honoree is showing no signs of slowing down. This is Billboard Explains: Woman of the Year Karol G.

The Colombian superstar’s breaking records and cementing her place in Latin music history. She has 30 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, including one top 10: “TQG,” alongside fellow powerhouse Shakira in 2023; that one hit No.7.

But it’s the Hot Latin Songs chart where Karol G really shines. She has 63 songs on that chart, the most of all time for a woman artist. Of those 63, 26 of them hit the top 10 and 8 are No. 1: a collab with Angel, Daddy Yankee, Ozuna and J Balvin spent 12 weeks at the top, and “Mamiii” alongside Becky G, with 10 weeks at the top. In fact, she has the third most No. 1s among women on the Hot Latin Songs chart after Gloria Estefan with 15 and Shakira with 13.

Her Grammy winning album Mañana Será Bonito hit No.1 on the Billboard 200, the first ever all-Spanish language No. 1 album by a female artist.

Congratulations to Billboard’s Woman of the Year, Karol G. Keep making some breaking records.

Luke Hemmings Talks New Solo Song ‘Shakes,’ Finding His Own Sound & More | Billboard News

Luke Hemmings talks about his new solo song “Shakes,” stepping out on his own as an artist, finding his own sound, feeling nervous about performing on his own for the first time, what he wants fans to learn about him from this new solo project, whether the 5SOS guys have heard his new solo songs and more!

Luke Hemmings:
All these emotions I have inside of me … get get them out. And I think I’ve learned that I’m a very emotional person. And I think I have something to say, as an artist of my own. Hey, it’s Luke Hemmings, and this is Billboard News.

Rania Aniftos:
Everybody, it’s Rania Aniftos, and welcome back to Billboard News. We have such an exciting guest in studio today: We have the one and only Luke Hemmings! Welcome.

Luke Hemmings:
Hell yeah, thank you. Thanks for having me.

Rania Aniftos:
So the new single — “Shakes” — it sounds so great. I love this next era for you. Tell me a bit about the inspiration behind it, the songwriting process.

Luke Hemmings:
“Shakes” was written, like, maybe a year ago, at this point, and started in New York. I already had, like, a few ideas for the album from, like, writing on the road. And, like, a lot of it was written in hotels and, like, planes and all the sadm boring places. That’s where a lot of it came from.

Rania Aniftos:
Introspective places.

Luke Hemmings:
Very introspective. And this was written, the chorus was written in New York, and it was like experimenting with pitching my voice. That’s why the chorus kind of sounds like me, but it also has like other layers of like pitch vocals. Anyway, very boring nerdy stuff. But I was getting, like, more, I don’t know, just trying out stuff. So experimenting with different perspectives.

The first album was very, like, coming from what I … my experiences, and like, how I see things. So I was like, let’s try something else, not thinking that it would turn out to be the first single. And then, like, nine months later, wrote the verses for it. And yeah, I was trying to just listen to a lot of like, The Verve, and Blur and M83 and Beachouse and stuff. So that’s kind of where the inspiration came from.

But the way I write things for this project is very chaotic. So it will be like, I’ll write a piece here. And then, like, won’t write anything, the rest of it for, like, nine months. So it’ll, like, turn out to be this mishmash of, I don’t know, a story, but it still has that same emotion and feeling.
