Billboard Explains: Peso Pluma & The Mexican Music Boom

Regional Mexican music, or música mexicana, isn’t a trend, it’s a movement that has only grown stronger in the past few years.

A new generation of artists such as Peso Pluma, Eslabon Armado, Fuerza Regida, Natanael Cano, Grupo Frontera, Yahritza y Su Esencia, among others, have helped usher a new global era for the legacy genre, which has been around for more than 100 years. The new generation continues to honor the music of their parents and grandparents by putting their on spin on the traditional sound — either by fusing it with other genres, such as hip-hop, modernizing the lyrics for a more Gen Z approach and/or collaborating with non-regional Mexican artists for a wider reach.

According to Luminate, regional Mexican music consumption in the United States jumped 42.1% year to date through May 25, outpacing gains in the Latin genre overall, as well as country, dance/electronic, rock and pop. Only K-pop — up 49.4% year to date — has performed better this year than regional Mexican. About 99% of regional Mexican consumption comes from streaming.

With Peso Pluma at the center of it, to date, he has over 700 million on-demand official streams in the United States, according to Luminate, and 22 entries on the Billboard Hot 100. In June, he became the first artist to ever lead both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. lists simultaneously with different songs: the sierreño anthem “Ella Baila Sola” with Eslabon Armado and his Bizarrap-produced track “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 55.” His album Génesis debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 (dated July 1) — the highest rank ever for a música mexicana album on the chart.

Billboard Explains: Peso Pluma & The Mexican Music Boom

Narrator:
Is Peso Pluma Mexican Music’s next global superstar? The Latin genre has been growing in popularity over the years and Peso is at the center of the explosion. But what is Regional Mexican? And what is it about Peso and the other new artists of today catching everyone’s attention?

This is Billboard Explains Peso Pluma & the Mexican Music Boom.

Regional Mexican is an umbrella term that consists of genres from different parts of Mexico and the United States like Banda, Tejano, Corridos, Norteño, Sierreńo and Mariachi. It has been around for more than a century creating a foundation and fan base thanks to artists like Los Tigres Del Norte, Christian Nodal and the late Jenny Rivera.

Artists like Grupo Firme, Banda MS, Eslabon Armado and more have risen in popularity and extended the genre’s global reach over the past few years. But then came Peso Pluma!

Peso had a breakout year in 2023 and has reached milestone after milestone ever since. His collab with Eslabon Armado “Ella Baila Sola” made history for being the first Regional Mexican song to reach the top five of the Billboard Hot 100.

His blockbuster album ‘Genesis’ became Billboard’s highest-charting Regional Mexican LP ever when it debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and he was the first Regional Mexican artist to perform at the MTV VMAs. But what is it about Peso and other young artists, like Natanael Cano and Fuerza Regida that has captured everyone’s attention?

Neil Young Is Still Off Spotify — Here’s What It’s Costing Him

It’s been nearly 20 months since Neil Young pulled his music off Spotify and, according to Billboard’s estimate, the move has cost him about $300,000 so far in lost recorded music and publishing royalties.

On Jan. 24, 2022, the singer-songwriter gave the streaming company an ultimatum: “You can have Rogan or Young. Not both.” Young blamed Rogan and his Spotify-exclusive podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, for spreading “fake information about vaccines” and putting the public’s health at risk. Spotify acquiesced a few days later and removed Young’s catalog from its platform.

Other artists in Young’s circle of friends, such as Joni Mitchell and Nils Lofgren, also requested that Spotify remove their music from the platform — and remain off to this day. But Young’s absence leaves the largest hole in Spotify’s catalog: 45 studio albums, two EPs and 12 live albums as a solo artist and with his band Crazy Horse, plus compilations and soundtracks, that includes such rock classics as “Cinnamon Girl,” “Heart of Gold” and “Rockin’ in a Free World.”

Young’s open letter and demand for removal from Spotify attracted worldwide media attention and caused a brief spike in streams, but his departure from the platform at the end of January 2022 created an immediate decline in his average stream rate — and it hasn’t rebounded since, according to Luminate data. From 2021 to Sept. 21, 2023, Young’s average weekly global on-demand audio streams declined 32% from 10.5 million to 7.1 million. The actual loss is deeper considering that weekly on-demand audio streams in the U.S., Young’s largest market, increased 25% over that period.

The impact of Young’s Spotify pullout isn’t much for an artist of his stature and net worth, but it’s not nothing, either. Each month Young is away from Spotify, he loses about $16,000 in royalties from both his record label and his music publishing, according to Billboard analysis of Luminate data.

In nearly 20 months, Young’s absence has cost him about 273 million on-demand audio streams. The gross amount of lost royalties during Young’s Spotify absence totals roughly $1.3 million. Billboard estimates that Young’s labels, Warner Music Group’s Reprise Records and Universal Music Group’s Geffen Records, have lost approximately $1 million in gross revenues, from which Young receives a royalty. Young’s gross publishing revenue has fallen about $270,000. Young sold 50% of his publishing rights to Hipgnosis Songs Fund in 2021.

Sales of Young’s music in the U.S. have dropped, too, although whether his absence from Spotify played a role is unknown. So far in 2023, Young has sold about 25% fewer albums per week than compared to 2021; 2022’s weekly average was 9% below 2021 levels. Physical album sales, which outnumber digital album sales nearly eight-to-one for Young, are down 24% from 2021 to 2023. This year, weekly digital album sales are off 29% from 2021 (they increased 3% in 2022). Young’s weekly digital track sales have fallen by 35% from 2021 to 2023.

The cumulative effect of the sales slowdowns amounted to 59,000 fewer album sales and 54,000 fewer track sales over nearly 20 months. (Luminate does not track the Neil Young Archive, an online subscription service that provides access to a vast catalog of Young’s audio and video, but in October 2019 Wired reported it had 25,000 subscribers with a goal to reach 40,000 paying $1.99 a month.)

There’s much more to Young’s career than Spotify, though, and plenty of other ways for him and his rights holders to earn off his music. In the last 18 months, for example, Young’s music has been used in over 75 TV and film synchs, according to a person with knowledge of the songwriter’s business. These have included the NBC series “This Is Us” (Jill Andrews’ cover of “Only Love Can Break Your Heart”), the AMC series “Dark Winds” (Young’s recording of “Birds”), the Hulu series “Poker Face” (Young’s recording of “Walk On”), “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” (the band’s performance of “Old Man”) and “Sunday Night Football” (Beck’s cover of “Old Man”).

One place you won’t see Young’s music is advertisements. Young is famously opposed to using his music to sell products and advertise corporate brands. Young encapsulated his distaste for putting music in advertisements in his 1989 song “This Note’s For You” — a take on a Budweiser ad slogan from the era, “This Bud’s For You.” “Ain’t singing’ for Pepsi, ain’t singing for Coke,” Young sang in the album’s title track. “I don’t sing for nobody, makes me look like a joke.” The song’s video stirred up controversy — and was initially banned from MTV — for its mocking depiction of a 1984 Pepsi commercial shoot during which pyrotechnics set Michael Jackson’s hair caught fire.

Surely, Young has lost untold millions of dollars over his career in potential ad sales and endorsement deals. But as an artist who’s always clearly voiced his principals and stood by them, he’s long made it clear money is not his first priority.

In between “Alone Again” and “Psycho,” the band charted with three titles, all in 2022, with “Never Gonna Learn” (No. 6, May); “Faded Out,” featuring Within Temptation (No. 14, September); and as featured, with Motley Crue, Ice Nine Kills and From Ashes to New, on The Retaliators’ “The Retaliators Theme (21 Bullets)” (No. 15, November).

Asking Alexandria first reached the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart with “The Death of Me,” which peaked at No. 23 in November 2013. Prior to “Alone Again,” the band reached a No. 23 best with “Antisocialist” in July 2020, one of the act’s eight top 10s.

Concurrently, “Psycho” leaps 13-8 on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart with 2.5 million audience impressions, up 19%, Sept. 22-28, according to Luminate. It’s the band’s highest-ranking entry on the tally, surpassing the No. 10 peak of “Alone Again.”

“Psycho” placed at No. 20 on the most recently published, Sept. 30-dated, multi-metric Hot Hard Rock Songs ranking. In addition to its radio audience, the song earned 327,000 official U.S. streams Sept. 15-21.

The song is the lead single from Where Do We Go From Here?, Asking Alexandria’s eighth LP, which has earned 15,000 equivalent album units since its Aug. 25 release.

All Billboard charts dated Oct. 7 will update on Billboard.com Tuesday, Oct. 3.

“Good Good” is the second song to take eight weeks or fewer to rule Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay in 2023, following Lil Durk’s “All My Life,” featuring J. Cole, which also made it in eight weeks in July. “Good Good” is Usher’s first No. 1 on this tally since Oct. 2016, when “No Limit,” featuring Young Thug, spent two weeks on top.

It’s Usher’s quickest rise to the top since “Climax,” which reached No. 1 in seven weeks in April 2012. 21 Savage previously took eight weeks as a featured act on Post Malone’s “Rockstar” in December 2017, and “Good Good” marks Walker’s quickest rise to No. 1.

“Good Good” is also Walker’s first No. 1 in all on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, surpassing the No. 2 peak of “Karma” in June. It’s 21 Savage’s sixth, following the two-week reign of his co-billed-with-Drake “Spin Bout U” in May.

As for Usher, “Good Good” makes 17 No. 1s, a count that puts him fourth all time; Drake leads all acts with 45 rulers since the tally’s inception in 1993.

Most No. 1s, Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay
45, Drake
20, Lil Wayne
18, Chris Brown
17, Usher
12, Beyonce
11, Cardi B
11, R. Kelly
10, Jay-Z
10, Rihanna

Usher first reigned on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay with “You Make Me Wanna…,” a nine-week topper beginning in September 1997.

Between “No Limit” and “Good Good,” Usher reached Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay eight times, paced by the No. 2 peak of Chris Brown’s “Party,” on which he was featured alongside Gucci Mane, in April 2017.

“Good Good” concurrently jumps 3-2 on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, 6-3 on Rhythmic Airplay, 13-11 on Adult R&B Airplay and 35-29 on Pop Airplay.

On the most recent, Sept. 30-dated, all-format Radio Songs list (which reflected the week ending Sept. 21), the track appeared at No. 17 with 30.9 million audience impressions, up 18%, according to Luminate.

The Sept. 30-dated, multi-metric Billboard Hot 100 found “Good Good” lifting 58-57. In addition to its radio airplay, the song earned 4.8 million official U.S. streams and 1,000 downloads.

“Good Good” is scheduled to be featured on Coming Home, Usher’s ninth studio album. It’s set for a Feb. 11 release alongside a performance at the Super Bowl halftime show.

All Billboard charts dated Oct. 7 will update on Billboard.com on Tuesday. Oct. 3.

And of course, there’s more. These are the best new dance tracks of the week.

Eliza Rose, “Take You There”

The Label: Warner Records

The Spiel: “Yeah, I can take you there,” Eliza Rose offers on her latest, before simply proceeding to do so with the slick, swirling, simmering club track. Simultaneously playful and tough, “Take You There” marks another winner in the U.K. artist’s catalog, which already included “Better Love” and “Pleasure Peak” from this year, along with her 2022 smash “B.O.T.A. (Baddest Of Them All).” The new track comes with a trippy, fairly mesmerizing music video that features Rose playing dress-up with friends in a drop top, along with a claymation version of the artist.

The Artist Says: “‘Take You There’ and ‘Better Love’ always come together as a pair, a bit like two-sides of a coin showing how in underground dance music you can have both these slick, summery cute moments, as well as these more mad, chaotic ones. It’s important to me as an artist to touch both sides.”

The Vibe: We’ll literally go anywhere Rose wants to bring us.

VTSS & Boys Noize, “Steady Pace”

The Label: Big Beat Records

The Spiel: “Feel that groove between our bodies, keep a steady pace,” VTSS whisper-sings on her euphemistic new collaboration with Boys Noize, “Steady Pace.” A punchy beat indeed keeps the track moving at a quick clip, creating the same sort of hypnotic, lightly industrial vibe that have long been core elements of both the Polish and German producers’ respective wheelhouses. Stick around for the gear shift in the last 20 seconds, which hits like a strobe light right in your eyes.

The Artist Says: “The track was made during mine & Alex’s session in LA in our friend’s Sonny’s studio,” says VTSS. “It really came about quite quickly – within probably first our we had a sketch and I’ve written the first verse. I haven’t done much in studio collaborations so I was extremely nervous and frankly I didn’t know Alex that well, but we instantly clicked and have been great friends since.”

The Vibe: High-octane sexual tension.

Logic1000, “Grown On Me”

The Label: Therapy/Because Music

The Spiel: Berlin-based producer Logic1000 returns with her first release of 2023, “Grown On Me.” Built around a single lyric stating the title over and over, the track maintains the producer’s signature style of fusing an ethereal vibe with weighty production, with the message here taking on greater meaning given that the artist, born Samantha Poulter, recently became a mother.

The Artist Says: It’s been way too long since releasing something new so this is a special moment for me. Ever since Tom (big ever)  and I wrote ‘Grown On Me’ the vocal has been stuck in my head, and the lyric has a very special, private meaning to me, that in fact came after choosing the sample. This song was written (and now released) during a transformative period of my life. I hope it uplifts you the way writing it uplifted me.”

The Vibe: Lush, feminine, maternal.

LP Giobbi, “Time Expands”

The Label: Yes Yes Yes

The Spiel: LP Giobbi launches her Yes Yes Yes imprint, part of the Defected Records family of labels, with “Time Expands.” The track functions as its title suggests, making three minutes and 24 seconds stretch into a good trip of a good time with a darkly pulsing bass line, flecks of rhythm guitar, a long windup with a percussive breakdown, and a voice spitting hippie philosophy while repeatedly declaring that “time shrinks or expands in exact opposition to what you want to do.”

The Artist Says: “I grew up going to this hippie festival in Oregon called the Oregon Country Fair,” LP says on the label name’s origin. “My parents started going in their 20s, and I have never missed it since the womb. It’s my favorite place on earth because it leans into weirdness, joy, and mind-opening experiences. The first thing you see when you walk on site is a sign that just says, ‘Yes Yes Yes’ and it makes me smile ear to ear every single year. This label is not beholden to one genre or one particular sound. It’s simply about good dance music, made for the dancefloor that expands your mind and makes you feel good.”

The Vibe: Shrinking, expanding, spinning, grooving, vibing — yes indeed.

Sam Gellaitry, UNDER THE ILLUSION

The Label: Major Recordings

The Spiel: The Scottish producer follows his 2022 album VF Vol II with the UNDER THE ILLUSION EP. Sophisticated and pristinely produced, the four-track project is dancefloor fare equally well-suited for the dancefloor or the afterhours. Gellaitry will surely unfurl them all during his set this weekend at San Francisco’s Portola festival.

The Artist Says: “For this project, I decided to make an EP focused solely on dance music which actually feels like returning home after a long time away for me,” Gellaitry says. “I started making music due to my fascination with Daft Punk and French House when I was ten, so it’s almost bizarre that I haven’t officially dropped a project dedicated to the genre that got me started off in the first place! These tracks are intended for night time usage.”

The Vibe: That rare midnight-to-3 a.m. timespan, and all the possibilities contained therein.

Feid, Becky G and Colombian newcomer Venesti, all released new albums this week. Feid’s MOR, No Le Temas a la Oscuridad (Love, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark) is easily his most eclectic production yet, with 15 songs that dabble in genres including Afrobeat, techno, funk and his signature Medallo reggaton. With a mix off ranchera, corridos and ballads, Becky G’s Esquinas (Corners) celebrates her two cultures and pride of being a 200 percenter (100% Mexican, 100% American). Rising act Venesti delivered his debut album De La Nada (Out of Nowhere), in which he showcases his vocal range backed by dancehall, bachata, electronica, reggaeton and more.

A notable single that was released this week is Enrique Iglesias and Maria Becerra’s first collaborative effort, a romantic bachata called “Asi Es La Vida.” This doesn’t mark their first bachata rodeo; Becerra previously joined Prince Royce in “Te Espero” and Rusherking in “Antes de Ti,” and Iglesias released “El Perdedor” featuring Marco Antonio Solis, “Loco” with Romeo Santos and “Cuando Me Enamoro” with Juan Luis Guerra.

Other must-hear tracks include Bad Bunny’s “Un Preview,” Paola Jara and Chiquis’ ultra powerful “Lo Que No Sirve, Estorba” and Nio Garcia and Anuel AA’s infectious “Oh Na Na.”

Last week, Ricky Martin and Christian Nodal’s “Fuego De Noche, Nieve De Día” won the poll with more than 67 percent of the votes. What’s your favorite new Latin music release of the week? Vote below!
