Las Vegas Police Arrest Suspect in 1996 Tupac Shakur Murder

Las Vegas police made an arrest on Friday morning (Sept. 29) in one of the most vexing high-profile cold cases in the city’s history. According to the Associated Press, Las Vegas PD arrested Duane “Keffe D” Davis in connection with the unsolved drive-by shooting of Tupac Shakur on the Las Vegas strip on Sept. 7, 1996.

The unsolved murder of the legendary rapper in a brazen nighttime assault on the city’s most famous boulevard had vexed authorities and fascinated the public for nearly 30 years, spawning a number of documentaries, investigative TV series, books and theories about who gunned down the then-25-year-old MC.

Davis was reportedly arrested early Friday morning, with the exact charges he was taken in on not announced at press time; two officials with first-hand knowledge of the arrest said Davis was expected to be indicted later in the day.

The 60-year-old alleged member of the South Side Compton Crips street gang was the uncle of gang member Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, long considered the prime suspect in Shakur’s killing. Anderson was beaten by the rapper and his entourage on the night of the murder, allegedly in retaliation for Anderson’s role in snatching a Death Row chain at a Los Angeles Mall in July 1996; Anderson, 23, who denied involvement in the Shakur murder, was shot and killed in 1998 in a gang shooting and was never charged with the killing.

Las Vegas PD announced in July that they had searched Davis’ Henderson, Nevada home in connection with the Shakur murder investigation, though they did not give any additional information at the time about what they found or what spurred the search.

NBC News reported at the time that a copy of the warrant it obtained noted that authorities were looking at computers and other electronic devices, as well as audio recordings and that they took away a Pokeball USB drive, a black iPhone, two iPads and a purple Toshiba laptop, among other items.

Shakur was gunned down inside a black BMW driven by Death Row Records founder Marion “Suge” Knight when it was stopped at a red light near the Las Vegas Strip on the night of a Mike Tyson fight. A white Cadillac pulled up next to the passenger side of Tupac’s car and someone inside fired 14 rounds. Hit four times, Shakur was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died a week later. The unsolved case has spawned a number of conspiracy theories about the murder, including allegations that it was tied to the similarly unsolved murder of the Notorious B.I.G. in Los Angeles on March 9, 1997 as part of a media-whipped East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry.

In 2018, Davis claimed in an episode of BET’s Death Row Chronicles that he knew the name of Shakur’s killer, though he did not supply one at the time, even as he said Anderson could have been the gunman. Davis also claimed in his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend, that he was in the Cadillac on the night of the shooting and has described himself as the last living witness to the incident. No arrests had previously been made in the decadeslong investigation and Nevada does not have a statute of limitations for prosecuting homicide cases.

Retired LAPD detective Greg Kading — who spent years investigating the Shakur murder and wrote a book about it — interviewed Davis in 2008 and 2009 during the LAPD ‘s investigation into the Shakur and Smalls killings. He told the AP that he thought the Shakur investigation gained momentum recently after Davis’ description of his role in his memoir.

“It’s those events that have given Las Vegas the ammunition and the leverage to move forward,” Kading told the AP before Davis’ arrest. “Prior to Keefe D’s public declarations, the cases were unprosecutable as they stood… He put himself squarely in the middle of the conspiracy,” Kading said of Davis. “He had acquired the gun, he had given the gun to the shooter and he had been present in the vehicle when they hunted down and located both Tupac and Suge (Knight).”

Taylor Swift’s ‘Welcome to New York’ Soundtracks Chiefs vs. Jets Game Promo Starring Travis Kelce

The Kansas City Chiefs are headed to New York this weekend, and who better to soundtrack their expedition than the West Village’s own Taylor Swift?

In a new NBC television commercial the pop star’s ode to NYC “Welcome to New York” was used as background pump-up music for a series of clips promoting the Kansas City Chiefs’ upcoming match against the New York Jets. But while Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was given a solo shot or two in the TV spot, it was tight end Travis Kelce — Swift’s rumored new love interest — who was undeniably the promo’s star.

The tight end was featured heavily throughout, with the commercial both opening and closing on shots of Kelce. As the official Sunday Night account tweeted, the clip was “Taylor Made for Sunday Night.”

The spot’s use of Swift’s song is understandable, but it may come as a surprise given that Fox Sports just reported that its request to use Swift’s music during last weekend’s Chiefs-Bears game broadcast, which captured multiple clips of the singer’s surprise attendance, had been denied.

According to a recent blog post by NFL on Fox lead producer Richie Zyons, associate producer Rich Gross had sought permission to use Swift’s catalog “amid the avalanche of rumors.” Per the FOX music department, however, Swift’s record label and publishing company denied their request “in conjunction with speculations on or about her private/personal/dating life.”

Billboard has reached out to Swift’s rep for comment.

In other “Travlor” news, the “Anti-Hero” singer is rumored to be planning on attending the Chiefs-Jets game Sunday (Oct. 1). If true, the coverage is sure to be a repeat of last week’s game, which sent the internet into a tailspin as soon as clips of Swift hanging out with Donna Kelce and leaving the stadium with Travis surfaced.

Queer Jams of the Week: New Music From Empress Of, Rina Sawayama, LP & More

From Empress Of and Rina Sawayama’s delectable new team-up to LP’s gorgeous new album, check out just a few of our favorite releases from this week below:

Empress Of feat. Rina Sawayama, “Kiss Me”

After spending a few months on the road together, it makes perfect sense that indie-pop darlings Empress Of and Rina Sawayama would team up for a new single together. On “Kiss Me,” the pair fuse their respective R&B and pop-adjacent sounds to make a harmonious new track about finding that special connection with your significant other. Sawayama and Lorely Rodriguez’s voices are a match made in heave (as evidenced by their new music video), making “Kiss Me” the exact kind of sonic euphoria designed to kick off your weekend the right way.

LP, Love Lines

As long as you’re feeling the love, you may as well tap into LP’s newest record, Love Lines. This sweeping, cinematic new project sees the singer-songwriter leaning into the romance of it all, whether that means basking in your lover’s sparkling personality (“Dayglow”) or bidding a bittersweet farewell to the ending of a relationship (“Long Goodbye”). With each passing song, their voice only gets stronger, showing what a powerhouse vocalist like LP can accomplish with a simple concept album.

Maddie Zahm, “Dani”

Most queer people can relate to the idea of looking back on a “friendship” you had before coming out, only to realize that you were falling hard for that other person. Maddie Zahm takes that perspective and put it to gorgeous effect on “Dani.” Throughout this emotionally brutal ballad, Zahm revisits her infatuation with the titular Dani, only to realize that she was deeply in love with her, thus bringing an end to their friendship. Her voice sends bolts of electricity through you with just the mention of her old crush’s name, proving yet again the power of a good vocal and great songwriting.

Gia Woods, “Somebody Else’s Baby”

Realizing that you were the bad guy in a past relationship is never particularly fun — so Gia Woods would like to know what she can do to make up for it. On “Somebody Else’s Baby,” the up-and-coming pop singer owns her mistakes and begs for forgiveness, as an unyielding bass line underscores each of her words. After all, as she sings, “Maybe if I tried to, I could learn to undo/ All the ways I broke us, never meant to hurt you.”

Liza Anne, “Internet Depression”

Doomscrolling is a worldwide epidemic, and Liza Anne is here to let you know that she’s succumbed to it just as much as anyone else. “Internet Depression,” the art-rock artist’s newest single, sees Anne speaking directly to the toxic, algorithmic nature of online communication, and how truly isolating and dissociating that experience can be. There’s no fancy bells or whistles — just Anne’s excellent, slowly-distorting voice paired with a piano, telling you all of the intrusive thoughts that keep plaguing her mind — which makes “Internet Depression” that much more effective.

Cool Comedy • Hot Cuisine Fund-Raiser to Pay Tribute to Comedian Bob Saget

This year’s edition of the long-running Cool Comedy • Hot Cuisine, a fund-raiser for the Scleroderma Research Foundation (SRF), will be a tribute to comedian Bob Saget, who was a long-time SRF board member and co-host of this event.

Saget died in January 2022 at age 65 after suffering blunt head trauma from an accidental blow to the back of his head.

The event will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Edison Ballroom in New York City as part of the 19th annual New York Comedy Festival. Adam Duritz and David Immerglück of Counting Crows are scheduled to perform.

Comedian Jeff Ross will host the event, which will also feature comedians Michael Che and Nikki Glaser. Cool Comedy • Hot Cuisine is co-chaired by celebrity chef Susan Feniger, actress Regina Hall (whose mother was diagnosed with the disease in 2006), and Saget’s widow, Kelly Rizzo.

“I am honored to continue the legacy that Bob built, by working with his closest friends to create an unforgettable night with the same goal that Bob had—to raise as much money as possible for scleroderma research,” Rizzo said in a statement. “Laughter was at the heart of everything Bob did, and Cool Comedy • Hot Cuisine is no exception. We look forward to filling the room full of laughter, all in the spirit of finding a cure.”

At this year’s event, the SRF will debut the Bob Saget Legacy Award, which will honor individuals who have followed in his footsteps by helping raise awareness about scleroderma and funds to find a cure. The inaugural award will be presented to Caroline Hirsch, founder and owner of Carolines and the New York Comedy Festival.

Saget championed the SRF since losing his sister Gay to the disease in 1994. He joined the organization’s board of directors in 2003. However, his involvement actually began in 1991 through the SRF’s annual signature event, Cool Comedy • Hot Cuisine — as an attendee, then the next year as a performer, and ultimately as a key figure in organizing and producing the event.

The SRF has presented Cool Comedy • Hot Cuisine since 1987. The event has been a cornerstone of the SRF’s fundraising efforts, raising more than $29 million to fund research.

Sponsorships starting at $1,000 are now available. A limited number of individual tickets at $750 are also available. For more information, visit www.srfcure.org/cchc.

The Scleroderma Research Foundation (SRF), a 501(c)(3) organization, was established in 1987. Scleroderma is a rare and often life-threatening autoimmune disease that can cause fibrosis in the skin and other vital organs.

Launched in 2004, The New York Comedy Festival is the largest comedy festival in the U.S. This year’s edition will take place from Nov. 3 to 12.

Jessie J Says She’s ‘Unemployed’ After Leaving Republic Records: ‘There’s No Negative Spin, It’s Not Dramatic’

After a 17 year run with Republic Records, Jessie J announced in a video on Friday (Sept. 29) that she has split with her longtime label home and is planning on releasing her next project independently.

“My lawyer said that I need to make a statement about the decision that I have made. I don’t want it to feel like a huge, big thing,” said J, 35, in the selfie vid in which she is walking through a park. “After 17 years I have decided to leave Republic Records. I was about six months pregnant when I made this decision.”

She credited label founders Monte and Avery Lipman and former A&R rep Jason Flom for being “so gracious and kind in supporting my decision and letting me go. It’s been, honestly, the most amazing high and low ride of my life being signed to Republic,” added the singer whose last album of new material for the label was 2018’s R.O.S.E. “I just feel so grateful that I’ve got to experience being signed to the best record label in the world…. But I have to just be honest with who I am and what I want from my career now.”

Joking that she was now “unemployed,” the English singer born Jessica Ellen Cornish rose to prominence in 2011 with her debut single, “Do It Like a Dude” and the Dr. Luke-produced follow-up, “Price Tag,” which peaked at No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her third album, 2014’s Sweet Talker, hit No. 10 on the Billboard 200 album chart, fueled in part by her single “Bang Bang,” which also featured Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj; that track peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking her U.S. singles chart peak.

“There’s no negative spin, nothing’s happened, it’s not dramatic. It’s just me literally saying, ‘This doesn’t feel right’ and it hasn’t for years,” she said in the video. “So, I need to stop just trusting my instincts and ask for them, so i asked and now I am unemployed.”

The “Domino” singer revealed that she was diagnosed with the vertigo-inducing disorder Ménière’s disease in 2021 and opened up about suffering a miscarriage later that year. She said in an interview in May 2022 that she had recorded her sixth album but scrapped the whole thing after thinking that it didn’t “feel right.” J gave birth to a baby boy in May of this year.

The birth of her child appears to have sparked a change in J’s outlook on her music career, with the singer saying she wants to move forward on her own. “I am now in the process of doing all the legalities and sorting out the music so I can put out new music and do it my way. On my time, on my terms and do it independently,” she said. “Now that I’ve had a baby there is just no stopping me. Something happens when you have a baby and just start giving zero f–ks… There’s nothing but good vibes on this.”

She promised that “new music is coming,” though at press time no release date or title was available for her next project. The video ended with J hoping that there some “12-year-old” out there who might spark a TikTok trend by dancing to one of her songs, joking that viral influencers are the “new record labels.” At press time a spokesperson for Republic Records had not returned Billboard‘s request for comment on J’s news.

Not a Fan of *NSYNC’s New Song? Justin Timberlake Jokingly Offers a NSFW Response

Justin Timberlake has a strong message for anyone who isn’t a fan of “Better Place,” *NSYNC‘s first song in 20 years.

In a hilarious blooper real, the pop star and his recently reunited bandmates —  JC Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick — promote their new track, “Better Place,” from Trolls Band Together. “You’re listening to our new song,” Fatone tells the camera of the tune, which dropped Friday (Sept. 29).

Then, right on cue, Timberlake jokingly adds, “Let us know if you like it. If you don’t, go f–k yourself,” earning raucous laughter from the rest of the guys.

“l heard ‘go love yourself’…anyone else?” Chazes responded in the comments with a laughing-crying emoji.

“BETTER PLACE IS OUT! WE HOPE YOU LIKE IT,” the “Mirrors” singer captioned the video posted on his Instagram.

As of late, *NSYNC has been making fans feel like it’s 1997 again with a series of group appearances promoting “Better Place.” Last week, the quintet guested on Hot Ones, which found the bandmates sending F-bombs flying in response to the painful heat of spicy chicken wings.

Between bites, Timberlake said of “Better Place”: “For our fans that have been with us for so long, [we wanted] to give them something that felt not necessarily nostalgic, but familiar.”

And earlier this month, the boy band re-assembled for the 2023 VMAs, where they presented Taylor Swift with the best pop award for her “Anti-Hero” music video. Swift, like many ’90s kids around the world, was ecstatic.

“I had your dolls!” she exclaimed as she accepted the award from them. “You’re pop personified, so to receive this from your golden pop hands is really too much!”

Manuel Turizo is Connecting his Two Worlds Through Music and Culture

At 16, Manuel Turizo‘s remarkable ascent to stardom began with his debut chart-topping single, “Una Lady Como Tú,” peaking at 32 on the Hot Latin Songs chart. This smash hit came to life over a weekend when Manuel and his brother, Julián, set out to “create the most romantic song ever recorded.” With only a ukulele and a voice note recording, the bedroom jam session birthed a fan favorite, not only in his native Colombia but also on the global stage.
