Woman Who Fatally Shoved Broadway Coach Sentenced to More Prison Time Than Expected

A New York judge sentenced a woman who pleaded guilty to fatally shoving an 87-year-old Broadway singing coach onto a Manhattan sidewalk to six months more in prison than the eight years that had been previously reached in a plea deal.

During Friday’s (Sept. 29) sentencing of Lauren Pazienza for manslaughter, Manhattan state Supreme Court Judge Felicia Mennin said she was unconvinced that the 28-year-old Long Island woman took responsibility for her actions on March 10, 2022, when she pushed the vocal teacher, Barbara Maier Gustern, to the ground.

Gustern, whose students included Blondie singer Debbie Harry, lay bleeding on a sidewalk. She died five days later.

Pazienza pleaded guilty on Aug. 23. She could have been sentenced to 25 years had she been convicted during a trial.

Pazienza, a former event planner originally from Long Island, has been locked up at the city’s notorious Rikers Island jail complex since a judge revoked her bail in May 2022.

According to prosecutors, Pazienza attacked Gustern after storming out of a nearby park, where she and her fiance had been eating meals from a food cart.

Gustern had just left her apartment to catch a student’s performance after hosting a rehearsal for a cabaret show, friends told The New York Times.

Gustern’s grandson, A.J. Gustern of Colorado, called Pazienza’s apology “contrived.”

“I curse you, Lauren Pazienza,” he said as he read from a statement in court, Newsday reported. “For the rest of your days, may you be miserable.”

Pazienza encountered Gustern on West 23rd Street and shoved her to the ground in what police called “an unprovoked, senseless attack.”

Gustern worked with singers ranging from the cast members of the 2019 Broadway revival of the musical Oklahoma! to experimental theater artist and 2017 MacArthur “genius grant” recipient Taylor Mac, who told the Times she was “one of the great humans that I’ve encountered.”

Hozier Smashes Madison Square Garden Debut With ‘Unreal Unearth’ Tour: 5 Best Moments

Last month (Sept. 13), Hozier celebrated the ten-year anniversary of “Take Me to Church” — the roaring Grammy-nominated Diamond-certified carnal worship song that shot him to fame — and while that single remains a towering contribution to the 21st-century pop music lexicon, it was just one of countless electrifying moments at Hozier’s Madison Square Garden debut at his Unreal Unearth tour on Saturday night (Sept. 30).

A 25-city trek in support of his third studio album of the same name — which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Rock, Folk and Alternative Albums charts — the Unreal Unearth Tour finds Hozier 10 years removed from the life-changing explosion of “Church,” comfortably treating tens of thousands of dedicated, enraptured fans to fantastic live renditions of standout tracks from several EPs and albums.

Featuring an incredibly talented band that combined the musical legacies of Ireland, New York City and Nashville, TN, a set that periodically lit up with bare upside-down trees and a heartwarming air of gratitude, Saturday night’s show was a career highlight for the 33-year-old Irish rocker. Opening with a haunting take on Unreal Unearth introductory double-header “De Selby (Part 1)” and “De Selby (Part 2),” Hozier treated Madison Square Garden to a journey through some of his most moving ruminations on love, lust, the afterlife and religion. A remarkably consistent live vocalist, Hozier’s voice — in addition to his guitar skills — was the centerpiece of the show. He seamlessly shifted from cooing in a whispery falsetto to rocking the arena’s foundation with lofty belts and rollicking arrangements throughout the 19-song setlist — which included such songs as “Movement,” “Eat Your Young” and “Jackie and Wilson.”

With a simple stage setup that prioritized showcasing the camaraderie of his band and the physicality of each of their individual performances, the Unreal Unearth tour perfectly captured the reason so many people became so enamored with Hozier a decade ago. He performs with a reverence for the experience of crafting music and sharing that with the world. Whether it’s the camera lingering on the way he delicately finger-picks the guitar or a sultry body-to-body moment between two band members, the entire production reveled in the endless possibilities of music and its creation. That joy and respect were reflected in the crowd, a sold-out sea of diverse faces belting out call-and-response exchanges preceding “To Be Alone” and coordinating eardrum-splitting cheers in anticipation of a show-stealing encore.

Here are the five best moments at Hozier’s Unreal Unearth Tour in New York City on Saturday night.

Travis Kelce & Chiefs Trade Friendship Bracelets on TikTok Like They’re at a Taylor Swift Concert: Watch

The Kansas City Chiefs took part in a Swiftie-approved pre-game day activity this weekend: handing out friendship bracelets to each other. Amid all the chatter about tight end Travis Kelce’s possible romance with Taylor Swift, the Chiefs’ TikTok seemingly gave a nod toward where the maybe-couple’s courtship began on Saturday (Sept. 30).

“We’re all BFFs over here,” a caption on the Chiefs’ TikTok account says in the new friendship bracelet-themed post. The caption was topped off with the emoji that shows a smiling face surrounded by hearts.

In the TikTok clip, Kelce reacts to a bunch of friendship bracelets by throwing his head back and laughing before accepting one that spells out “Killa Trav.” “I know what these are all about,” he says, looking right at the camera.

Kelce has said that he tried to meet Swift and give her a friendship bracelet with his phone number when he saw her perform in Kansas City on The Eras Tour this summer, but it didn’t work out. “I was a little butt-hurt I didn’t get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her,” he admitted in an episode of his New Heights podcast, which he records with his brother Jason.

The New Heights podcast’s TikTok account left this comment on the Chief’s post on Saturday: “Nothing better than a good friendship bracelet.”

Fans of both the Chiefs and Swift seemed to enjoy the reference to The Eras Tour on TikTok, with some even noticing Travis Kelce doing a hand movement in the clip that’s similar to one of the pop star’s dance moves. “not the bejeweled hands,” one person commented with the crying-face emoji. “I love him.”

Last weekend, Swift, who was seated beside Kelce’s mother in a suite, very visibly cheered on the Chiefs during their game against the Chicago Bears, and left the stadium with Travis. She’s rumored to be attending the Chiefs-Jets game on Sunday (Oct. 1).

In a new NBC television commercial, Swift’s “Welcome to New York” is used as background pump-up music for clips promoting the Chiefs’ game against the New York Jets. Kelce is featured heavily throughout, and the official Sunday Night Football account tweeted that the clip was “Taylor Made for Sunday Night.” According to an NFL blog post, Swift’s team reportedly declined Fox Sports‘ request to use her music during the actual game last Sunday, “in conjunction with speculations on or about her private/personal/dating life.”

The Eras Tour friendship bracelet trend stems from a lyric from Swift’s Midnights track “You’re On Your Own, Kid”: “Make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it.” Swifties took that thought to heart and made trading friendship bracelets a fun part of their concert experience.

P!nk Reschedules Texas Concert Due to Illness: ‘I Am So Disappointed’

P!nk‘s Summer Carnival Tour hasn’t quite gone as planned in Texas. She had to kick out a concertgoer for making her show his platform to protest circumcision earlier this week in San Antonio, and on Friday (Sept. 29) she had to call off her concert in the Dallas area on doctor’s orders.

“Hi everyone. I’m very sorry to report that I have come down with a bad sinus infection, and the doctor advised me not to perform tonight. I am so disappointed,” P!nk wrote in a message on Instagram hours before that night’s show scheduled at Arlington’s Globe Life Field.

She added, “You know I do everything in my power to never miss a show.”

While some fans left comments of regret about traveling in for the concert, others were understanding that the singer’s health comes first. Fortunately, P!nk already has plans in place to make up for the canceled show.

“I will be rescheduling tonight’s show at Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX for Sunday November 26th of this year. All tickets will be honored, and it will be a phenomenal show. I hope to see you then, and again, am so deeply sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. It is never my intention. Sending you all love,” said P!nk.

Following the postponed concert date, P!nk is next scheduled to play a show in San Diego on Oct. 3.

Olivia Rodrigo Performs ‘If It Makes You Happy’ With Sheryl Crow, Debuts ‘Lacy’ & ‘Making the Bed’ Live

Six years before Olivia Rodrigo was born, Sheryl Crow‘s “If It Makes You Happy” was charting in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Decades later, the hit singer-songwriters got together at Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe for a duet of Crow’s ’90s hit.

“pinch me! sang one of my favorite songs of all time with the greatest of all time @sherylcrow !!!! what an honor!!!!” Rodrigo wrote on Instagram, where she shared a photo with Crow and a video of their “If It Makes You Happy” performance, on Friday night (Sept. 29).

“Funnest day ever with the amazingly brilliant @oliviarodrigo! What a talent!! And the loveliest young woman!” Crow said, sharing Rodrigo’s post on her Instagram page.

A video shows the pair harmonizing on the chorus: “If it makes you happy/ It can’t be that bad/ If it makes you happy/ Then why the hell are you so sad?”

Rodrigo, guitar in hand, also performed the Guts ballad “Lacy” live for the first time during her appearance at the Bluebird Cafe, as well as the album’s lead single “Vampire” on piano. She also debuted “Making the Bed” (also from Guts) live on piano.

Crow and Rodrigo connected last year at Billboard‘s 2022 Women in Music event, where Rodrigo was presented Woman of the Year by Crow, who praised the example Rodrigo is setting for her generation of artists. “When I came up, women were struggling to be the architects of their own careers,” she said. “So when I see someone like our Woman of the Year Olivia Rodrigo having such incredible success at such an early age, I am blown away.”

“I am such a massive fan of you and your songwriting,” Rodrigo gushed at the time. She noted, “It’s not always easy being a young woman in the music industry, but I’ve found so much strength from the female songwriters who have come before me and paved the way and opened doors for so many young women like me.”

Donald Trump Shares His Thoughts in on Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce Rumored Romance

Donald Trump is giving his two cents on the rumored romance between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.

During an interview with the Daily Caller, the former president was asked for his take on the possible romance between the pop superstar and Kansas City Chiefs tight end.

“I wish the best for both of them. I hope they enjoy their life, maybe together, maybe not — most likely not,” Trump said during the sit-down, which was published on Friday (Sept. 29).

Last weekend, Swift made waves when she attended the Chiefs’ football game against the Chicago Bears in light of her rumored romance with Kelce.

The NFL star’s ongoing courting of the “Anti-Hero” singer began in July, when he tried (and failed) to hand her a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it during her Eras tour stop in Kansas City. He then invited Swift to a football game, which she accepted on Sept. 24, when she shocked football fans and Swifties alike after cheering on the tight end from Kelce’s suite alongside his mom, Donna, as the team beat the Bears.

The pair also left the stadium together, as seen in a clip sports reporter Jarrett Payton shared on X. Kelce and Swift were then spotted riding off together in his convertible, according to photos acquired by TMZ.

NBC also used Swift’s “Welcome to New York” in a TV commercial promoting the Chiefs’ game against the New York Jets on Sunday (Oct. 1). The singer is rumored to be attending the game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Jada Pinkett Smith Speaks Out After Tupac Shakur Murder Arrest: ‘Now I Hope We Can Get Some Answers’

Jada Pinkett Smith is reacting the arrest of a suspect in connection with the murder of Tupac Shakur.

The Emmy-winning actress and talk show host took to her social media on Friday (Sept. 29) to speak out following news that Las Vegas police arrested Duane “Keffe D” Davis in connection with the drive-by shooting of the iconic rapper, who died on Sept. 13, 1996.

“Now I hope we can get some answers and have some closure. “R.I.P. Pac,” Pinkett Smith wrote on her Instagram Stories, adding a dove emoji.

The Girls Trip star’s post arrived hours after after Davis, 60, was arrested and charged with the high-profile murder on the Las Vegas strip, which has been the subject of numerous documentary films, investigative TV series, books, and theories about who gunned down the then-25-year-old MC.

Pinkett Smith had a close relationship with the rapper for many years. Since Tupac’s passing, she has often relived her memories with him in front of the public. In 2017, Pinkett Smith revealed that she was a drug dealer when she first met the rapper, and in 2021, she shared an unpublished poem from the “Dear Mama” rapper.

While Pac was alive, Pinkett Smith appeared in his “Keep Ya Head Up” and “Temptations” music videos, and covered $100,000 for his bail after he was convicted for sexual abuse. While the two stars never officially dated, their incredibly close friendship has become a point of public debate, especially in light of her and Smith’s “entanglement” controversies.

Earlier this month, Pinkett Smith shared an adorable throwback video of her and Shakur lip-syncing to  DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince’s 1988 hit single “Parents Just Don’t Understand.”

“Not in a million years would I have dreamed that the Fresh Prince and I would become, um, very acquainted. Not in a million years did I imagine three lives, their fates, would be so intertwined,” she wrote on Instagram. “And… I never would have imagined that this video would become a tangible memory, of the last time Pac and I, were simply kids together. Pac and I lip syncing Parents Just Don’t Understand by Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince during our Junior year in high school. Who would have thought?”

The caption is believed to be an excerpt from Pinkett Smith’s forthcoming memoir, Worthy, which is slated for release on Oct. 17.

Britney Spears Says She’s Taking Her Divorce From Sam Asghari ‘One Day at a Time’

Britney Spears is trying to stay positive following her divorce.

On Friday night (Sept. 29), the 41-year-old pop superstar took to Instagram to share a lengthy message of gratitude in which she reflects on her split from Sam Asghari.

“I’m in such a beautiful location !!! l’m so lucky to have amazing friends !!! Positive affirmations are important to me at the moment !!!” Spears wrote alongside snapshots of herself cozying up with longtime friend and manager Cade Hudson, whom she was recently spotted vacationing with in Mexico.

The “Piece of Me” singer also touched on the difficulties of looking back on her past while writing her forthcoming memoir, The Woman In Me.

“I say this because I’m going through a divorce and having to reflect my past in a book was … let’s just say not easy !!!” she wrote. “I’m just saying !!! But I take one day at a time learning to breathe !!! Self love is so unbelievably important !!! I woke up and just cried because I felt grateful to be in such a beautiful place !!!”

Asghari, 29, filed for divorce from the pop star in mid-August. The former couple met in 2016 and tied the knot in a star-studded wedding ceremony in June 2022.

In her post, Spears also opened up about her presence on social media and using photo editing apps like Facetune.

“Then I thought about my relation between my life and Instagram at the moment !!! Let’s get this straight !!! It’s addicting … but in my personal opinion the moment you start to take yourself too seriously is when people quit !!!” she wrote. “Hey I’m not promoting FaceTune for the rest of my life but seriously when I have days of depression I look and see the new apps and it makes me feel silly !!! I’m like wow this is cool !!! I see things in a brighter way and so what if it’s enhanced !!!”

The singer added, “I’m just trying to understand people that say they don’t participate in it !!! Yet they’re on complete defense for some reason making accusations and downplaying it by saying all pictures are fake and are all retouched !!! Nothing is real … honestly who f—ing cares !!! If you’re so entitled and perfect why should you even care if someone is experimenting with apps on their phone ??? Why even mention it ??? If you’re so much better than that ??? But are you ??? Come on !!! I love my best friend !!!”

Earlier in the week, Spears worried fans when she posted a video of herself dancing with what appeared to be two large kitchen knives. The concern prompted authorities to perform a wellness check on the singer, according to the Los Angeles Times. Spears later took to Instagram to address the situation.

“I know I spooked everyone with the last post, but these are fake knives that my team rented from Hand Prop shop in LA. These are not real knives. No one needs to worry or call the police,” she wrote on Friday (Sept. 29). “I’m trying to imitate one of my favorite performers Shakira … a performance I was inspired by !!! Cheers to us bad girls who aren’t afraid to push boundaries and take risks!”

Live Nation Cut Merch Fees — And This California Club Owner Says Indie Venues Should, Too

Nine months before Live Nation made the headline-grabbing decision to cut merch fees at 77 of its clubs and theaters across the country, Ineffable Music Group did it first. Now, the company’s CEO, Thomas Cussins, has a piece of advice for other independent venue owners and operators concerned that the concert giant is using this tactic to curry favor with artists and agents and squeeze out their businesses: Everything will be OK.

“Merch money is not what is going to keep us in business,” says Cussins, whose company oversees 10 venues across California, including The Catalyst Club in Santa Cruz, the Ventura Music Hall in Ventura and the Golden State Theatre in Monterey. “What causes independent venues to go out of business is the one in 10 shows where venues pay way too much relative to the draw and end up losing everything they made on the previous nine shows.”

Cussins made the decision to stop charging acts performing at his venues a cut of their merch sales — a standard industry practice — while watching a Jan. 24 Senate Judiciary Committee hearing about Ticketmaster. Cussins says it was members of the band Lawrence’s testimony about how much bands rely on merch money for touring that moved him to change the company’s policy: “It is money that most directly gets into the band’s pocket and the idea that we were taking away from that did not sit right with me.”

Since then, he says the decision has not hurt his business “at all.”

Still, independent venues remain concerned about what Live Nation’s new “On the Road Again” program will mean for them — how can they compete with the deals Live Nation is offering? The National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) released a statement on Wednesday (Sept. 27) following the news, saying, “Temporary measures may appear to help artists in the short run but actually can squeeze out independent venues which provide the lifeblood of many artists on thin margins.”

Thomas Cussins

Thomas Cussins

Daniel Swan

The statement continued, “The initiative announced yesterday may seem like a move to follow the lead of some independent venues. It is not that. Instead, it appears to be a calculated attempt to use a publicly-traded conglomerate’s immeasurable resources to divert artists from independent venues and further consolidate control over the live entertainment sector. Such tactics threaten the vitality of small and medium-sized venues under 3,000 capacity, many of which still struggle to keep their doors open.”

A NIVA member since 2020, Cussins says he understands why some NIVA members may be upset that Live Nation’s policy might put pressure on their businesses. But, he adds, eliminating merch fees is a net positive for the entire live music ecosystem — one where everyone is benefiting.

“It’s difficult to operate a single venue in a market against Live Nation,” says Cussins. “Venues are low-margin businesses. I’m not here to say that no one should charge merch fees. What I am here to say is that it is my opinion that if you waive those fees, it is an overall healthier ecosystem and you will actually do better in business because you are doing something that makes the process easier.”

What was your reaction when you heard the news that Live Nation was going to waive merch fees for artists?

I was ecstatic. It’s something I’m very passionate about because it fosters a healthier concert ecosystem.

Were you worried about the financial hit Ineffable would take when you decided to eliminate merch fees at Ineffable venues?

No, because merch money is not what is going to keep us in business. What causes independent venues to go out of business is the one in 10 shows where venues pay way too much relative to the draw and end up losing everything they made on the previous nine shows. I think it’s more productive spending one’s time fostering a healthier ecosystem where everybody has a chance to make money. To me, that means not taking artists’ merch money and artists taking more door deals, where the artist has an opportunity to make the most money.

But is that realistic? For many artists, taking a door deal with no guarantee is too risky.

Correct. Some can’t take that risk. But many other artists understand they can make more money on a door deal and lower the risk the venue faces. For independent venues to be healthy, we need volume, which means we need bands to be healthy and touring and making enough money to support themselves. And the money made from merch most directly affects their ability to be out on the road and do well.

What is your reaction to the statement NIVA issued, saying the On the Road Again program is just an attempt to squeeze out indie venues?

They’re doing what they think is in the best interests of their members. We’re members of NIVA and they have done an incredible job for our business. I’m a huge fan. But my take is that merch money is not what’s going to keep these independent venues in business. What’s going to keep them in business is a healthy concert ecosystem, where we’re keeping the bands healthy and keeping them on the road with deals that are fair so that everyone can make a few bucks and eat at the table together and nobody is gouging the other person.

What is the biggest challenge facing artists on the road right now?

It is the travel costs — the price of gas, vehicle rentals, the price to pay crews. If you are going out there and you are doing the same business and your costs have increased 30%, how can you possibly make that up? You might just not tour. I know a lot of bands that have told me they were doing 80 dates a year and now they just want to do 40. They just want to pick the 40 best markets. That hurts independent small businesses. I’m seeing that firsthand. Artists that are in the prime of their career saying, “I want to work less, but each one has more meaning.” And I can’t blame them. But if they can do a longer tour and amortize those costs and play those small secondary markets, then I can be their partner on the ground in markets where I operate venues and keep my hands out of their merch money.

What advice do you have to other venues considering dropping their merch fees?

It’s not one-size-fits-all and it might not be the right solution for everyone. But I am so happy that we made that move — not only from an ethos standpoint, financially as well. It has not hurt me at all.
