Adele to Receive Sherry Lansing Leadership Award at The Hollywood Reporter’s 2023 Women in Entertainment Breakfast Gala

Adele will receive the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award at The Hollywood Reporter’s 2023 Women in Entertainment breakfast gala on Dec. 7 in Los Angeles. The invite-only event coincides with the release of the magazine’s Women in Entertainment issue (on newsstands Dec. 7), which highlights the Power 100, a list of the most powerful female executives and talent in entertainment.

“We are beyond thrilled that Adele will be our Sherry Lansing Leadership Award honoree at this year’s Women in Entertainment event,” co-editors-in-chief Nekesa Mumbi Moody and Maer Roshan said in a statement. “Adele has had a groundbreaking career that has established her as one of the all-time greats: a brilliant songwriter, a stunning vocalist, a top-notch performer and an artist whose talents have no limit. She has set a standard of excellence not only as a female performer, but a performer, period. Her accolades – from multiple Grammys to her Emmy and Oscar – attest to that. In addition, she’s used her platform to inspire and help others. She is truly deserving of this award.”

The Sherry Lansing Leadership Award recognizes trailblazers and philanthropists in entertainment and media. It was established in honor of Sherry Lansing, the first woman to head a Hollywood studio. (Lansing is the former CEO of Paramount Pictures.) Past recipients include Charlize Theron, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey, Barbra Streisand and Viola Davis.

“Adele is a singular talent who has captivated the world with her incredible music,” said Lansing, 79, in a statement. “Beyond that, she paved the way for female artists to embrace their authentic selves and define their own voices and careers at a critical moment for women in music, empowering countless other female artists to do the same. I could not be more thrilled that Adele is receiving the award that bears my name.”

Adele, 35, has entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1 with each of her last three studio albums. Those albums have logged a combined total of 40 weeks in the top spot. She has amassed five No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 – “Rolling in the Deep,” “Someone Like You,” “Set Fire to the Rain,” “Hello” and “Easy on Me.” Her many awards include 16 Grammys, an Oscar and a Primetime Emmy. Adele is the only artist to sweep the Grammys’ “Big Three” categories – album, record and song of the year – twice.

Her current concert residency in Las Vegas, “Weekends with Adele,” has become a critical and commercial success. Reviewing the opening night show at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace a year ago, Billboard’s Katie Atkinson called it “utterly and breathlessly spectacular” and praised both “the massive technical flourishes and tiny thoughtful touches that color the 20-song set.”

The breakfast will also be attended by approximately 35 high school juniors and seniors who are participating in THR’s Women in Entertainment mentorship program, which pairs promising young women from underserved high schools across Los Angeles with top female executives in film and TV. The WIE Mentorship Program, now in its 14th year, is a joint venture with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles. A total of 230 students have taken part in the program, with mentees having received more than $13 million in scholarships over the past 13 years. This year’s celebration will see more than $1 million in university scholarships presented to high school seniors from the program.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment event is presented by Lifetime. The event is also sponsored by Cadillac and presented in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles, Chapman University and Loyola Marymount University.

Dolly Parton Hailed by Lainey Wilson, Darius Rucker, Sting & More in ABC Special Trailer: ‘We All Need More Dolly’

Leading up to this year’s CMA Awards in Nashville, Dolly Parton takes ABC News’ Robin Roberts behind the scenes of her new album, Rock Star.

The hourlong ABC News special Dolly Parton – From Rhinestones to Rock & Roll will air Tuesday from 10-11 p.m. ET. Together, Parton and Roberts discuss Dolly’s collaborations with numerous rock artists on her new album, including Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Pat Benatar, Peter Frampton, John Fogerty and Steven Tyler. Current CMA Awards co-host Luke Bryan will host the special.

They also discuss the stories behind many of Parton’s iconic fashion looks over the years. Those fashions and stories make up Parton’s newly released book Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones. The book was also celebrated during the recent grand-opening celebration of Parton’s fashion exhibit at Lipscomb University in Nashville.

The trailer for the hourlong special features a plethora of artists discussing what they love about the 77-year-old member of both the Country Music and Rock & Roll Halls of Fame. The special features appearances from Jelly Roll, Carly Pearce, Keith Urban, Cody Johnson, Miranda Lambert, Sting, Lainey Wilson, Darius Rucker, Tim McGraw, Jordan Davis and Luke Combs.

“Ask me what I love about Dolly Parton, and I’ll say everything,” “Need a Favor” singer Jelly Roll says in the special.

Though Parton’s accomplishments, talent and confidence are world-class, she also reveals to Roberts that she has her moments of nervousness too.

“I’m scared sometimes, you know, I’m not made of stone,” Parton says at one moment in the preview clip.

The upcoming CMA Awards, hosted by Bryan and Peyton Manning, will air live on ABC from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Nov. 8. Leading this year’s nominees are Lainey Wilson with nine nominations (including her first entertainer of the year nod) and first-time nominee Jelly Roll, with five nominations.

Kelly Clarkson Is Ready for the Holidays With Jazzy ‘Love, You Didn’t Do Right By Me’ Cover: Watch

With Halloween officially behind us, the holiday season is now in full swing — and so is Kelly Clarkson‘s daily Kellyoke segment on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

The American Idol alum, who earlier this week sank her teeth into a cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire,” swapped the spooky vibes for something much lighter and jazzier, delivering her unique take on Rosemary Clooney’s 1954 track “Love—You Didn’t Do Right by Me” on Friday (Nov. 3).

Her band Y’all — which included a pianist, drummer, cellist and bass guitarist this time around — followed Clarkson’s vocals with ease as she hit the track’s soaring high notes and gave special attention during moments that put her stunning vibrato on display.

“Love you didn’t do right by me/ I’m back on the shelf and I’m blaming myself but it’s you/ My one love affair didn’t get anywhere from the start/ To send me a Joe who had winter and snow in his heart wasn’t smart/ Love You didn’t do right by me/ As they say in the song…you done me wrong,” she delicately sang on the chorus of the track.

The song was written by Irving Berlin for the 1954 American musical film White Christmas and was performed by Clooney in the holiday movie. The Christmas classic was directed by Michael Curtiz and starred Bing Crosby, who contributed the title song to the soundtrack.

Clarkson’s latest Kellyoke serves as a warm-up for her next gig as host and performer at NBC’s annual Christmas in Rockefeller Center telecast. The program is slated to air on Wednesday, Nov. 29, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and will stream on Peacock.

Metro Boomin’s Red Bull Symphonic Concert: Exclusive Photos

The Weeknd once sang “Metro Boomin turn this ho into a mosh pit” on their Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Heartless,” but last Thursday (Oct. 26), he turned Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre into an entire hip-hop symphony during his Red Bull Symphonic concert.

His one-night-only experience marked the West Coast premiere of the Red Bull Symphonic, which showcases a collaboration between a modern artist and a classical musical director, together with a full-scale orchestra. It made its U.S. debut last November, when Rick Ross teamed up with conductor Maestro Jason Rodgers and the 50-piece, all-Black Orchestra Noir in Atlanta.

The hip-hop superproducer partnered with conductor Anthony Parnther (Encanto, Star Wars: The Mandalorian, Creed II, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) and the Symphonic Orchestra to reimagine many of his biggest hits, including Future‘s “Mask Off,” Migos and Lil Uzi Vert‘s “Bad and Boujee,” Post Malone and Quavo‘s “Congratulations,” Kanye West‘s “Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1” and his own “Creepin’” alongside The Weeknd and 21 Savage. Considering his star-studded list of collaborators, Metro also treated attendees to surprise guests John LegendSwae LeeNav and Roisee to perform songs from his 2022 Billboard 200-topping album Heroes & Villains and the 2023 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse soundtrack he executive produced.

“Sh–’s so beautiful,” Metro told his devout fans. “Tonight is a celebration. We celebrate music, we celebrate culture, we celebrate y’all for listening to this music and making it what it is.”

Kate Bush Confirms She Won’t Attend Rock Hall Induction Ceremony: ‘The Real Honour Is Knowing That You Felt I Deserved It’

It looks like Kate Bush will stick to running up hills instead of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame stages. The “Wuthering Heights” singer is set to be honored at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Friday night (Nov. 3), but a new statement confirms that she will not attend the Barclays Center-hosted celebration.

Bush opened the statement — which was posted to her official artist website — with heartfelt appreciation. “I am completely blown away by this huge honour – an award that sits in the big beating heart of the American music industry,” she wrote. “Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me. I never imagined I would be given this wonderful accolade.”

Alongside Bush, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine and The Spinners will all be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year.

“The RRHOF [Rock & Roll Hall of Fame] has welcomed me into the most extraordinary rostrum of overwhelming talent,” she mused. “When I was growing up my hero was Elton John. I pored over his music, longed to be able to play piano like him and longed to write songs that could move people in the way his work moved me.”

Last year, Bush earned a surprise runaway hit in 1985’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God).” The song climbed all the way to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 — becoming the most successful song of her career on the Billboard charts in the process — after it was used in a pivotal scene in season 4 of the Emmy-winning Netflix sci-fi drama Stranger Things. She referenced the phenomenon, writing, “Last year was such a surprisingly successful time for my track [‘Running Up That Hill’] and I’m sure that a lot of you who’ve voted me [into] the RRHOF also drove that track up the charts. Thank you!”

She continued, “I’m afraid I won’t be able to attend the ceremony tonight, but for me the real honour is knowing that you felt I deserved it.”

Bush did not give any explanation for her absence. For all intents and purposes, Bush’s statement acts as a de facto acceptance speech. She made sure to thank her biggest inspirations and closest collaborators, as well as wax poetic about what music means to her.

“Music is at the core of who I am and, like all musicians, being on the journey of trying to create something musically interesting is rife with feelings of doubt and insecurity,” she wrote in closing. “I’m only five foot three, but today I feel a little taller.”

Jung Kook, The Beatles, Olivia Rodrigo & More: Which Is Your Favorite Music Release of the Week?

The first new music Friday of November sees a K-pop star stepping firmly into the spotlight, one of the biggest rock bands of all time using tech to make something old new again, and a recent Billboard chart-topper lending her chops to a blockbuster movie series, with new releases from Jung Kook, The Beatles and Olivia Rodrigo.

Jung Kook’s solo album, Golden, arrived on Friday, making him the final member of BTS to release his own LP. The project is well worth the wait, as the vocalist’s range shines through in his use of poppy hooks and infectious melodies, as seen on lead singles “Seven” and “3D,” but the deeper cuts is where Jung Kook shows his ability to create more intimate moments, like the declarations and breaths on “Closer to You” (created with Major Lazer) and the clear yearning on “Somebody.” With 1 billion Spotify streams for “Seven” already, the BTS star is firmly stepping into solo stardom outside the group.

When news of a “new” song by The Beatles surfaced — featuring all four members and being revived through use of modern technology — fans young and old were tuned in, and it’s no surprise as to why. “Now and Then” reminds listeners of the Fab Four’s innate ability to tug at one’s heartstrings through delicate guitar playing and sentimental lyricism.

Olivia Rodrigo is following in the footsteps of her musical heroes, contributing to The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes original motion picture soundtrack. “Can’t Catch Me Now” taps into the pop star’s acoustic capabilities, telling the story of the film while managing to tie a thread between the stylings of her sophomore album, GUTS.

Megan Thee Stallion and Marshmello also released new material this week, but which release was your favorite? Vote in our poll below.

Here’s How Travis Kelce Reacted When Asked if He’s ‘In Love’ With Taylor Swift

Travis Kelce is respecting his relationship with Taylor Swift by keeping matters private.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end was out in Germany this week and spoke to the media to preview the Chiefs’ Sunday international game against the Miami Dolphins. When he was asked for an update on his relationship with the “Blank Space” singer, Kelce replied, “The latest status is I got to see her last week. That’s the latest status right there.”

The reporter then asked if the NFL star is “in love,” to which Kelce replied, “I’m going to keep my personal relationship personal.”

While Swift and Kelce have not publicly confirmed the official status of their budding romance, the “Anti-Hero” singer and the athlete were seen interlocking fingers once again as they left Chiefs vs. Chargers game two weeks ago. Earlier in the day, Kelce assisted the Chiefs in defeating Los Angeles 31-17 at Arrowhead Stadium, which Swift watched from a private box suite with Brittany Mahomes, wife of KC quarterback Patrick Mahomes, all while wearing a No. 87 friendship bracelet. The game marked the fourth Chiefs match attended by the 12-time Grammy winner this season.

Swift was also spotted giving Kelce a kiss on the cheek in an Instagram photo posted by wide receiver Mecole Hardman’s girlfriend Chiarah Gordon on Monday (Oct. 23), adding fuel to the fire of relationship rumors between the two superstars.

Here’s Why Fans Think Megan Thee Stallion Is Rapping About a Cheating Ex on ‘Cobra’

On Friday (Nov. 3), Megan Thee Stallion made her solo return to the music scene with “Cobra,” her first unaccompanied non-soundtrack single since Tory Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting her in July 2020.

The new song and video are packed with serpentine imagery, with Megan literally “shedding” her skin in the track’s Douglas Bernardt-helmed clip. Over a beat punctuated by rock guitars, the H-Town Hottie spits, “At night, I’m sittin’ in a dark room thinkin’ / Probably why I always end up drinkin’ / Yes, I’m very depressed / How can somebody so blessed wanna slit they wrist?”

Since the song’s release, fans have latched onto Megan’s intensely vulnerable and revelatory lyrics, commending the Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper for her honesty and bravery. “Megan is being extremely vulnerable with this record & I hope we give her, as a Black woman, a safe space that she deserves for sharing this with us through her art form,” wrote one user on X (formerly Twitter). Another user pointed out that “Cobra” follows a long line of emotional deep cuts from Megan, writing, “I’m crying at ppl acting like this Megan first vulnerable song ever made. This how I know yall not listening to her albums.”

“Cobra” boasts two particular revelations that have dominated the social media conversation. First, the “Savage” rapper reveals that she has recently been battling suicidal ideation and alcohol abuse, spitting, “Shit, I’d probably bleed out some Pinot / When they find me, I’m in Valentino / He pourin’ me shots, thinkin’ it’s lit / Hah, little did he know” and “Damn, I finally see it / I’m killin’ myself when b—es would die to be me.”

The other shocking revelation is her claim that one of her ex-partners cheated on her in her own house. “Pulled up, caught him cheatin’, gettin’ his d–k sucked in the same spot I’m sleepin’ / Lord, give me a break, I don’t know how much more of this s–t I can take,” she raps. With some simple calendar math and a bit of sleuthing, Meg’s Hotties seem to think that the cheating ex-partner in question is Pardison “Pardi” Fontaine, a Grammy-winning rapper and songwriter who dated Megan from 2020 to the top of 2023.

Pardi appeared to respond to the infidelity allegations via his Instagram Story, sharing a meme clip of Future saying “It’s an evil world we live in,” followed by an image of a laughing Tristan Thompson. He then limited the comments on his main feed.

See what fans had to say about Megan Thee Stallion, Pardison Fontaine and her new song below.

2023 Billboard Music Awards Producers Answer 15 Burning Questions About Show’s New Format

It’s no secret that awards show ratings on traditional TV platforms have been declining, even though fan engagement in the form of social media is up. Fans want the buzzy moments and maybe to find out who won, but they aren’t as inclined to sit for three or four hours and watch the show unfold in real time.

So producers are trying to come up with fresh approaches and figure out how to survive and thrive in this challenging environment. That’s one reason that the team behind the 2023 Billboard Music Awards have created a fresh format. Performances and awards will roll out across BBMAs and Billboard social channels, as well as via BBMAs.watch, on Sunday, Nov. 19.

In what is billed as a first-of-its-kind collaboration, the BBMAs and Spotify “Fans First” will bring fans up-close-and-personal with their favorite artists at performances and award celebrations taking place around the globe, in the midst of sold-out tours and in custom venues.

Nine new categories are being added this year, including four K-pop awards and two for Afrobeats, as well as top Hot 100 songwriter, top Hot 100 producer and top rock duo/group.

To find out more about the 2023 Billboard Music Awards Presented by Marriott Bonvoy, we quizzed two of the show’s producers, Maddy Mesevage, SVP, marketing for dick clark productions, and Alexi Mazareas, DCP’s VP, programming & development, to answer all the burning questions around the revamped awards show.

Do you agree with the premise that producers are trying to come up with fresh approaches and figure out how to survive and thrive in this challenging environment?

Mesevage: When conceptualizing a newly reimagined BBMAs, it was important for us to put the artists and fans first, leaning into the existing viewing habits of today’s audience to create an awards show that speaks to a new generation. Similar to how music consumption has shifted, with 85% of music consumed digitally, how fans engage with their favorite artists and view content has also shifted. So this year, the BBMAs is meeting fans everywhere they are, and everywhere they already consume music and content.

How has the creative community reacted to this new concept for the show? What are the main questions you’re getting from artists as they approach the new concept?

Mazareas: The new concept has resonated with both artist teams and the creative community as it allows an unprecedented amount of flexibility for an awards show performance. Not being restricted to a single stage or location, we are approaching each performance as a blank slate where we can collaborate with artists to create something totally unique, and bring on creative team members specifically curated to execute that vision. We’re partnering with best-in-class creative directors, world-renowned choreographers, and of course each artist’s creative team to make every one of these performances really special. Productions will take place all around the world from a variety of locations, each with their own vision and identity.

Are you telling top artists “Give us a four-minute performance and we’ll run it,” or is it more of a collaboration between the show and the artist?

Mazareas: This is a true collaboration between the artists, dick clark productions, and some amazing creative partners. We’ll collectively develop each concept, build a bespoke execution plan based on that vision, and then jump in together. The BBMAs team is heavily involved in all phases of the process, but our core goal is to facilitate the artist’s vision and help that vision come to life. Each production is completely unique.

The BBMAs used to be a three-hour show that aired from 8-11. Could someone who likes the traditional awards show format tune in to the show in that same way if they wanted?

Mesevage: Content will roll out directly to fans, including performances, exclusive interviews, and acceptance speeches across BBMAs and Billboard social channels; artists’ social platforms; BBMAs.watch, which takes viewers to a central curation page on Billboard.com; as well as Harmony, PMC’s proprietary live streaming platform, which saw record viewership for this year’s Streamy Awards at 15 million views and Billboard Women in Music with 57 million views.

Will there be a host or presenter to welcome the audience and make transitions and say “good night”?

Mazareas: Since this is such a non-traditional format, we are moving away from traditional host and presenter patterns. The goal is to really lean in to each unique performance and winner celebration that connects the artists and their biggest fans.

Will any of the performances be live? Will they all be new performances, recorded specifically for the show? Will any of them be pre-existing clips?

Mazareas: They will all be pre-recorded. All performances are exclusive to the BBMAs.

Will artists accept awards on the show or appear in some capacity even if they aren’t going to perform?

Mazareas: Yes, artists will accept awards, and with Spotify’s help, some will celebrate their winning moments with the fans who helped them reach the top of the charts.

In the absence of a live broadcast, will there be opportunities for spontaneous moments that often arise at awards shows?

Mesevage: We have created a scenario to give viewers an exciting new experience. We are leaning into the strengths of what this adapted format provides. We are not trying to re-create a live show environment. With that in mind, each taping lends itself to spontaneous moments and content that will feel truly unique to our 2023 BBMAs.

Another attraction of awards shows is that all your favorite stars are gathered into one place for one night. They watch each other rehearse and perform and cheer each other on. Will there be any of that?

Mazareas: Those are always great moments, but we are not focused on trying to replicate that element.  We are leaning into the flexibility the new format allows to create completely original and unique performance, that prioritize both artist creativity and the fan experience.

With TV ratings, it’s very clear how many (or how few) people watched the show, but how will it be measured here?

Mesevage: We will measure the audience based on views and engagement across BBMAs content.

How else will you evaluate the success of the show?

Mesevage: Success for us is not solely how many views the content receives. What we are doing with the BBMAs is re-evaluating the value proposition for the talent involved and the fans that both watch BBMAs content and consume artist content and music. We are interested in bringing value to artists and to fans. For us, working through how we can continue to further hone in on those elements will create success in the short and long term. We are also looking at how thoughtfully and intentionally we can work with brand partners within this new model and are excited to be working with Spotify, Lexus and Marriott.

The show’s new November air date means that the eligibility period now syncs up with the year-end Billboard charts. Have you been getting a favorable response to that new timing?

Mesevage: Everyone has been supportive of the change, and we’re now uniquely positioned as the only year-end awards show that’s dedicated to celebrating the year’s best in music.

How does the Spotify partnership come into play? What creative involvement do they have in the show via their “Fans First” program?

Mesevage: The Spotify partnership allows us to identify fans who have consumed vast amounts of  music over the past year of our performers and helped drive their favorite artists to the top spots on the Billboard charts. These fans will receive a “golden ticket,” granting them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see their favorite artist up close, in an intimate setting.

The BBMAs is unique among music awards shows because winners are determined by year-end performance metrics on the Billboard charts, which are data-driven. Fans’ consumption habits are the driving force behind this data, so the partnership with Spotify is naturally synergistic because Spotify is where many fans consume music. Together, we’re able to unite artists with their biggest fans who have directly impacted their success on the charts through streaming.

Spotify’s Fans First program offers exclusive rewards and privileges like one-of-a-kind concerts, personal artist experiences, and more. Spotify has been a great collaborative partner in working with us to create memorable and fun experiences for these top fans.

Will there be a special effort to spotlight the nine new categories on the show, including four K-pop and two Afrobeats categories?

Mazareas: There will be special global moments in the show spotlighting some of the new categories, including a couple that K-pop fans will not want to miss.

How many awards will be presented on the show? How many will be otherwise revealed or announced on the show?

Mazareas: We plan to reveal all winners on the BBMAs in a variety of ways.

Luke Bryan Tosses Back His 35th Country Airplay Top 10 With ‘But I Got a Beer in My Hand’

Luke Bryan hits the top 10 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart for a 35th time, as he hoists “But I Got a Beer in My Hand” to No. 10 on the chart dated Nov. 11.

In the Oct. 27-Nov. 2 tracking week, the song increased by 8% to 18.3 million audience impressions, according to Luminate. The lead single from Bryan’s upcoming studio album was written by Matt Dragstrem, Chase McGill and Geoff Warburton.

Bryan, whose 35 Country Airplay top 10s include 26 No. 1s, follows his previous single, “Country On,” which reached No. 3 in December 2022. He most recently led as a featured artist on Jordan Davis’ “Buy Dirt,” which ruled for two frames in January 2022. Bryan banked his first top 10 with his first of 44 entries when “All My Friends Say” hit No. 5 in September 2007. He first reached No. 1 with “Rain Is a Good Thing,” a two week chart-topper in July 2010.

Bryan ties Brad Paisley and becomes the 13th artist with at least 35 Country Airplay top 10s since the list launched in January 1990. George Strait leads with 61, followed by Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw, each with 60.

Bryan will co-host the 57th Annual Country Music Association Awards (Nov. 8, on ABC), with former NFL star quarterback Peyton Manning.

Deep ‘Thinkin’ ’

Morgan Wallen’s “Thinkin’ Bout Me” dominates Country Airplay for a third week (35 million, up 7%). Of Wallen’s 10 No. 1s, it marks his sixth to reign for three or more weeks.

Meanwhile, of the 16 songs that have ascended to their first weeks at No. 1 so far in 2023, the track is the seventh to lead for three or more frames.

“Thinkin’ Bout Me” concurrently crosses over to a No. 40 debut on the Pop Airplay chart, where it’s Wallen’s third entry and follows his No. 5-peaking “Last Night,” which dominated Country Airplay for eight weeks.
