Mariah Carey Pulls Midnight Santa Prank On Jimmy Kimmel, Talks ‘Super Sweet’ Mention in Britney Spears Memoir

Mariah Carey is the Queen of Christmas… pranks. The singer has now officially joined the list of A-list singers (Rihanna, Britney Spears, Dua Lipa) who’ve participated in the time-honored tradition of scaring the bejeezus out of Jimmy Kimmel in the middle of the night for our amusement.

On Thursday night’s (Nov. 2) Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Carey and her Christmas minions — including accomplices dressed as elves and Santa — snuck into Kimmel’s house in the middle of the night and gently roused the late night host. “Jimmy, I didn’t mean to wake you up, but it’s time!” Carey whispered sweetly as a confused Kimmel was woken from a deep sleep.

“What time is it?” he gurgled. “Hit it!” Carey replied as her holiday staple “All I Want For Christmas Is You” blasted out and the tinsel intruders began throwing fake snow and ringing sleigh bells as lights flashed and Kimmel’s wife Molly danced in glee at her husband’s annoyance. The bit ended with a barefoot Kimmel — wearing Molly’s robe and still rocking his mouth guard — accepted a piece of Carey’s new “It’s Time!” Christmas merch before groggily going off to bed, again.

Carey was in the studio for some couch time as well, laughing about her love of prank calls as a child and revealing that the police got involved one time after the then-11-year-old MC relentlessly called a girl who bullied her as a child. They also, of course, talked about how “All I Want” has become a perennial holiday No. 1, a development that Carey said is “bananas” because it was the first-ever Christmas song she ever wrote.

“I just wanted it to sound like a classic because that’s the kind of Christmas song I want… I just wanted it to be timeless,” she said. The singer said she “hopes” her 12-year-year-old twins, Monroe and Moroccan, like her signature song, but either way the kids will be along for the sleigh ride when Carey embarks on her 13-date Merry Christmas One and All! tour, which begins on Nov. 15 in Highland, CA.

“I’m putting them on my tour, which is coming up soon,” she said. “They’re gonna do various moments of music-making and merriment.” She also pushed back on Kimmel’s questions about whether it really is “time” to start thinking about the holidays when we still have Thanksgiving to get through, a push-back against the Christmas creep that Carey helped pioneer with her “It’s Time!” stunts.

“It’s the season, darling,” she assured Kimmel, but adding, “We have to have Thanksgiving. It’s the holidays, is it not?” Frankly, MC said, she doesn’t disagree with Jimmy that Thanksgiving has become a bit of a “speed bump” on the way to Santa season. “But I had to just go with the flow because everybody was rushing the holiday season and they started playing my song, so I kept being like, ‘not yet, don’t play it yet, why are we playing Christmas songs?’”

So, what was a joke at first became a lean-in with her funny “it’s time” videos over the past two seasons.

The singer also talked about making a cameo in Britney Spears’ best-selling tell-all memoir, The Woman in Me. “I heard something about it,” she said of her mentions in the book, as Kimmel noted that Britney said she loves Mariah, with Carey saying she loves her right back. He then read an excerpt in which Britney wrote about being at an awards show and knocking on Mariah’s dressing room door and being confronted with a “beautiful, otherworldly light,” 20 years before ring lights were a thing.

“Of course I had a ring light [in 2003],” the always perfectly-lit singer said. “By the way, that was super sweet what Britney said about me.”

Taylor Swift Dominates Australia’s Charts With ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’

It’s Taylor Swift week on Australia’s charts, as the U.S. pop star completes a double and floods the top deck of the national singles tally.

As expected, 1989 (Taylor’s Version) (via Universal) flies to No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart, published Friday, Nov. 3, for Swift’s 12th career leader in the land Down Under, while “Is It Over Now?” debuts at the pinnacle of the singles survey.

Remarkably, 1989 (Taylor’s Version) is her third No. 1 for 2023, following Midnights, which reigned for seven non-consecutive weeks earlier this year (after clocking seven weeks at the top in 2022) and Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), which checked-in at the penthouse for two weeks in July.

Although ARIA doesn’t publish the combined sales, the trade body reports 1989 (Taylor’s Version) accumulates the biggest sales week ever for Swift on the ARIA Albums Chart, the top opening week for any new album since 2017, and a record-setting first week for a vinyl album.

All four of Swift’s rerecorded LPs have led the national chart. Two more are to come.

With her latest feat, Taylor levels-up with Madonna in third place on the all-time list of acts with the most No. 1 albums in Australia. Jimmy Barnes leads that list with 15 as a solo act (he had another five with Cold Chisel), with the Beatles in second place with 14.

TayTay’s 12 leaders include the original version of 1989, which reigned for four weeks in 2014 and another five weeks in 2015.

With its fast debut, “Is It Over Now? (Taylor’s Version) (From The Vault)” becomes Swift’s 10th No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart, a list that’s dominated by tracks from the new album. Eight of the top 10 are from Swift, including a top four sweep.

Swift will repay her fans in February 2024 when she plays seven stadium shows in Australia, on her The Eras Tour, produced by Frontier Touring (three at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, four at Sydney’s Accor Stadium).

Across her career, the pop star has spent 23 weeks at No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart, the trade body reports, drawing level with “You’re The Voice” singer John Farnham.

The Beatles lead that list, with 130 weeks, ahead of Elvis Presley (61 weeks) and Justin Bieber (48 weeks). With “Now And Then,” which arrived Thursday, Nov. 2, the Beatles could extend that lead when the next chart is published.

Meanwhile, prolific Australian alternative rock act King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard earn their second top 10 of the year with The Silver Cord (KGLW/Universal), new at No. 5 on the ARIA Albums Chart. King Gizzard are nominated for four categories in the 2023 ARIA Awards, set for Nov. 15 in Sydney.

Close behind is Australian singer and songwriter Angie McMahon’s Light, Dark, Light Again (AWAL). It’s new at No. 6. Light, Dark, Light Again is McMahon’s second album, and the followup to Salt, which peaked at No. 5 in 2019. McMahon was Billboard’s Indie Artist of the Month for October.

Olivia Rodrigo Unleashes ‘Hunger Games’ Track ‘Can’t Catch Me Now’: Stream

Just two albums into her career, Olivia Rodrigo is proving impossible to catch.

The U.S. pop star is a perfect two-from-two atop the Billboard 200 chart, and the Official U.K. Albums Chart. In her homeland, she’s bagged three No. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100, most recently with “Vampire” sinking its fangs in for two weeks in July.

On the other side of the Atlantic, she became the youngster solo artist to history to claim the U.K. chart double when, at 18 years and three months, she led both main charts in May 2021 (with Sour and “Good 4 U”). The next month, in June 2021, Rodrigo became the first female solo artist to claim three simultaneous U.K. top 5 singles with “Good 4 U,” “Déjà vu” and “Traitor.”

Add to that a hattrick of Grammy Awards, including best new artist; a BRIT Award for best international song at the BRIT Awards in February 2022; and in August of this year, at the age of 20, she became the youngest artist receive a BRIT Billion Award by the BPI.

Before she bent charts to her will, Rodrigo was high-profile piece of the Disney machine, starring in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

Rodrigo adds another feather to her cap with “Can’t Catch Me Now,” from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (Music From & Inspired By), the official soundtrack to Lionsgate’s latest film in The Hunger Games franchise.

Rodrigo wrote the searing ballad with producer Daniel Nigro, less than two months after the release of Guts, her sophomore LP. It’s one of 17 songs on the soundtrack, including works performed in the film by The Hunger Games star Rachel Zegler, as well as tracks by young artists in the folk and Americana genre.

A prequel, set 64 years before Katniss Everdeen volunteered as tribute, and long before Coriolanus Snow became the dark overlord of Panem, The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes arrives in theaters Nov. 17.

The upcoming movie stars Zegler alongside Tom Blyth, Peter Dinklage, Hunter Schafer, Josh Andrés Rivera, Jason Schwartzman and Viola Davis, and follows the story of Coriolanus (Blyth), who is the last hope for his failing lineage, the Snow family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol.

The full soundtrack also arrives Nov. 17. Stream “Can’t Catch Me Now” below.

The iconic artist, author, actor, and activist broke the news of the televised concert special Thursday night (Nov. 2) when he appeared as a guest on Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show. “I’m ready for it,” he tells Colbert.

Many stars on the lineup for next month’s special were on hand when Nelson blew out 90 candles back in April of this year.

The likes of Beck, George StraitSnoop DoggMiranda LambertNorah JonesSheryl CrowDave MatthewsTom JonesThe Chicks, and Chris Stapleton performed at the Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90, A Star-Studded Concert Celebrating Willie’s 90th Birthday, spread across two-dates at the Hollywood Bowl

“It was great,” he tells Colbert of that earlier love-in, “a little surreal of course. I loved every minute of it.”

Like a fine wine, Nelson seems to be improving with age. He was nominated for four Grammys earlier this year and a multi-part documentary on Nelson, titled Willie Nelson & Family, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. On March 3, he released his latest album, I Don’t Know a Thing About Love, which highlighted songs written by Harlan Howard, on Sony’s Legacy Recordings. On Friday, Nov. 3, Nelson is inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame.

The party doesn’t end there. “It is the sincere privilege of our lives to have produced these shows celebrating our beloved Willie, and to partner with CBS to bring this special to fans around the world,” comment Mark Rothbaum and Keith Wortman, creators and executive producers of Willie Nelson’s 90th Birthday Celebration. “Viewers will now have the chance to sing, and laugh, and cry and experience the joy of this celebration like never before.”

For his latest late-night stint, Nelson performed “I Never Cared For You,” and “Whiskey River,” both of which appear on his Greatest Hits, released today to coincide with his Rock Hall elevation.

Watch Reneé Rapp Duet With Kesha to ‘Your Love Is My Drug’ at Energetic Brooklyn Show

It’s been a busy week in New York for Reneé Rapp. Between singing “For Good” for the 20th anniversary of Wicked with fellow singer-songwriter Lizzy McAlpine on Monday (Oct. 30), or serenading Lola Tung with “One Less Lonely Girl” while dressed as Justin Bieber on Tuesday (Oct. 31), the rising star has made the most of her time in the Big Apple.

But during her sold-out performance at the Avant Gardner in Brooklyn on Thursday night (Nov. 2), Rapp brought out her biggest guest yet — pop superstar Kesha. The pair performed a vamped-up, rocked-out version the latter’s 2010 hit “Your Love Is My Drug.”

A little more than halfway through her headlining set, Rapp spoke to her rapt audience about the influential artists who inspired her throughout her life. “I want to talk about the people who, musically, personally, and professionally, I look up to and regard so highly,” she said. “They shaped who I was as a kid, and made me want to be sexy, and funny, and exciting, and outrageous, and loud and, most of all, really f–king sexy. So what better way to honor one of those women, [than] by doing one of their songs?”

Rapp proceeded to perform a sped-up rock version of the pop single, much to the crowd’s delight. But as she reached the song’s second verse, she called Kesha out onto the stage — dressed in all black with a pair of tinted sunglasses and a leather jacket, Kesha acoompanied a visibly stunned Rapp onstage for a rousing performance of the song. “I f–king love you, Reneé,” Kesha declared as they reached the song’s bridge.

Once the song was over, Rapp couldn’t contain her excitement any longer. “Getting to sing with one of your idols, who is unapologetically perfect is so insane,” Rapp said giddily to the crowd. “We just sang a song, like, ‘lovesick crackhead,’ and I’m gonna cry. Oh f–k that was so cool!”

Check out two clips of Reneé Rapp and Kesha duetting to “Your Love Is My Drug” below:

Jason Aldean’s ‘Highway Desperado’ Is Here: Stream It Now

Three-time ACM entertainer of the year winner and Macon, Georgia native Jason Aldean‘s 11th studio album, Highway Desperado, is here.

Aldean is a co-writer on three of the album’s 14 songs, including the title track “Highway Desperado,” as well as “Hungover in a Hotel” and “Breakup Breakdown.”

Aldean has previously released a handful of songs previewing the album, including “Let Your Boys Be Country,” “Tough Crowd,” and his controversial “Try That in a Small Town,” which earned both praise and intense criticism after the song’s accompanying music video was released in July. The clip features scenes filmed at Tennessee’s Maury County Courthouse, where a Black man named Henry Choate was lynched in 1927. The Columbia Race Riot also occurred there in 1946.

In a recent interview with CBS, Aldean said that he might have rethought the filming location if he had been aware of the location’s history. “Knowing what I know now, probably not,” he said of whether or not he would choose to film there now. “But it’s also — I’m not gonna go back 100 years and check on the history of this building because, honestly, if you’re in the South, you could probably go to any small-town courthouse, you’re gonna be hard-pressed to find one that hasn’t had some racial issue over the years at some point. That’s just a fact. For anybody that thinks that we picked that building specifically for that reason, because there was a lynching there, whatever.”

Aldean noted that the courthouse location is where he gets his vehicle registration renewed each year and that it is in the county he lives in.

“There was people of all color doing stuff in the video,” he said during the CBS interview. “That’s what I don’t understand. There was white people in there, there was Black people. This video did not shine the light on specific group and say, ‘That’s the problem.’ And anybody that saw that in the video, then you weren’t looking hard enough at the video. I thought it was actually a song that said something for a change. Not just, ‘Here’s another song for radio.’ I didn’t expect it to get the kind of heat that it got. And I think that was probably more because of the video more so than because of the song.”

He concluded, “The whole idea behind the video was to show the lawlessness and the disrespect for cops and just trashing cities. … I’m just not cool with that. I feel like the narrative got switched over and became more of a racial type thing. If that’s what you got out of the song and the video, that’s almost on you, because that wasn’t our intention.”

“Try That in a Small Town” earned Aldean his first Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper, and currently ranks at No. 2 on Billboard‘s Country Airplay chart.

Since his breakthrough 2005 top 10 Billboard Country Airplay hit “Hicktown,” Aldean has amassed 25 No. 1 Country Airplay hits, and seven of his albums have reached the top spot on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart.

Highway Desperado‘s title is a nod to the years Aldean has spent on the road.

“I think when I look back on it, I built my career early on my live show, and have been on the road touring since I was 18 years old,” Aldean said in a statement. “For us, touring is our favorite part. Getting on the bus and going town to town and playing our shows and doing our thing and seeing the fans… the title for the tour and album was really inspired from that.”

Megan Thee Stallion Drops New ‘Cobra’ Single: Stream It Now

Megan Thee Stallion dropped “Cobra,” her first single under her own independent music and entertainment entity Hot Girl Productions, on Friday (Nov. 3).

The three-time Grammy-winning artist revealed in an Instagram Live last month that she wasn’t signed to a label anymore. “This part of my album is very much so funded by Megan Thee Stallion because we’re trying to get off … Y’all know what’s the tea. But I have no label right now,” she explained. “We’re doing everything funded straight out of Megan Thee Stallion’s pockets. So, the budget is coming from me. Motherf—ing Hot Girl Productions! The next s— y’all about to see is all straight from Megan Thee Stallion’s brain and Megan Thee Stallion’s wallet. We are in my pockets, hotties, so let’s do our big one.”

She recently settled a years-long legal battle with her former record label, 1501 Certified Entertainment. The label’s attorneys announced last month that both sides had “mutually reached a confidential settlement to resolve their legal differences” and that Megan and 1501 will “amicably part ways.”

The rapper’s been gradually releasing new music after announcing that she would be taking a break to focus on “healing” in April. “Fans can expect new music when I’m in a better place,” she said in an interview with InStyle. Since then, she released “Bongos” with Cardi B (a follow-up collaboration to their Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 smash “WAP”) and “Out Alpha the Alpha” from the Dicks: The Musical soundtrack. “Bongos” debuted at No. 5 on Billboard‘s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and reached No. 1 on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales.

Jung Kook Unleashes ‘Golden’ Debut Solo Album: Stream It Now

Out of all the days Jung Kook sings about in his hit single “Seven,” Friday just might be the most special one. At long last, the “Golden Maknae” of BTS has finally unveiled his debut solo studio album, Golden. The record — which already features two Billboard Hot 100 top 5 hits — arrived on Friday, Nov. 3.

The road to Golden began in July when Jung Kook dropped his Latto-assisted “Seven.” The cheeky pop&b track topped the Hot 100 — becoming his first U.S. No. 1 single as a soloist — and recently became the fastest song in history to accumulate over one billion stream on Spotify. A second single, a Jack Harlow collaboration titled “3D” arrived on Sept. 29, debuting and peaking at No. 5 on the Hot 100. On Oct. 3, the BTS breakout star confirmed the release of Golden through a press release promising an 11-track album.

The solo LP — which features production credits from the likes of BloodPop, DJ Snake and Diplo — follows several solo singles from Jung Kook, including 2022’s “Stay Alive” (No. 95) and a featured turn on Charlie Puth‘s “Left and Right” (No. 22). In the lead-up to Golden, Jung Kook also appeared on “Too Much,” a collaboration with The Kid LAROI and Central Cee that has since peaked at No. 44 on the Hot 100. With its No. 10 debut on the U.K. Singles Chart, “Too Much” helped Jung Kook become the first South Korean soloist to score three U.K. top 10 singles.

Golden is the latest in a string of solo projects from the Bangtan Boys following the band’s pause from group activities to let its members report for South Korea’s mandatory military service. So far, Jin, J-Hope and Suga have all enlisted, bringing BTS a few steps closer to their 2025 return.

On Monday, Nov. 6 — just three days after Golden’s release — Jung Kook will make his solo Tonight Show debut as a guest and performer. Host Jimmy Fallon announced the news with a hilarious Instagram video on Wednesday (Nov. 1).

“That’s the time you must keep on trying / Smile, what’s the use of crying? / You’ll find that life is still worthwhile / If you just smile,” Clarkson mused over a soothing instrumental by her band, My Band Y’all.

“Smile” was acquired by Universal Music Group from the iconic singer’s estate in January 2021, as part of a deal that included about 200 recordings with iconic songs like “Nature Boy,” “Mona Lisa,” “Unforgettable,” “The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas To You),” “L-O-V-E” and “When I Fall In Love.”

Clarkson, meanwhile, is fresh off the release of the deluxe issue of her 10th album, Chemistry, which contains five brand new tracks — “I Won’t Give Up,” “Did You Know,” “You Don’t Make Me Cry” featuring her daughter River Rose, “Goodbye” and “Roses” — in addition remixes of the album singles “Mine” and “Favorite Kind of High” by David Guetta and Ty Sunderland respectively. There’s also a live version of “Mine” live from The Belasco.

Chemistry was initially released on June 23 via Atlantic Records and debuted at No. 6 on the July 8-dated Billboard 200, spending a total of three weeks on the chart following its release.
