State Champ Radio Grammys 2023
Latin music may have grown exponentially in consumption at a global scale, but in the 2024 Grammy nominations announced Friday (Nov. 10), it shrank. Quite literally.
Not only were there no Latin artists to be found in the four main categories (album, record and song of the year, as well as best new artist), but the best música urbana album category had only three nominees — a fact the Academy attributes to not enough submissions (“If a category receives between 25 and 39 entries, only three recordings will receive nominations in that year”; best música urbana album just missed that threshold with 37 entries).
In a notable exception, Mexican-American songwriter Edgar Barrera, who has delivered hit upon hit for the past year, scored a nomination in the songwriter of the year, non-classical category, where he will compete against Jessie Jo Dillon, Shane McAnally, Theron Thomas and Justin Tranter. And Gustavo Dudamel, the dynamic Venezuelan conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and soon-to-be conductor of the New York Philharmonic, has two nominations in the classical categories (for best orchestral performance and best classical compendium).
But it’s vexing not to see Karol G’s Mañana Será Bonito — up for best música urbana album — also up for album of the year. Or to not see chart-smasher Peso Pluma nominated for best new artist, even as he’s in the middle of a worldwide arena and stadium tour on his first year out.
The mysteries don’t stop there: While Peso Pluma is up for best música Mexicana album for Génesis, none of his strongest competitors — like Eslabón Armado’s Desvelado or Carin León’s Colmillo de Leche — are in the running, despite having been released during the eligibility period.
In fairness, the Latin categories are otherwise balanced with a mix of at least one commercial success alongside more off-the-beaten-path releases. Colombian indie newcomer Alemor, for example, competes against stalwarts Pedro Capó, Maluma and Pablo Alborán in the best Latin pop category. Colombia’s venerable Grupo Niche is up against Carlos Vives and Ruben Blades in the best tropical album category.
And, of course, the Grammys are about merit, not quotas or obligation. But given the across-the-board success of Karol G and Peso Pluma, from charts to stage, their absence from the top categories stings.

Dwayne Johnson dished in a new social media post Wednesday (Feb. 8) about just how wonderful it was to finally meet Adele at the 2023 Grammy Awards.
“What a legit and warm surprise at the top of the show!” he wrote of surprising the superstar at her table with help from Grammy host Trevor Noah. “And beautiful full circle moment calling her name and handing her the Grammy at the end of the night. ‘Get up here best friend.’”
In a separate interview with Variety, the wrestler-turned-movie star opened up about how he pulled off the surprise, explaining, “We were trying to figure out something to do that was going to be fun and surprise her, and we had kicked around ideas all week. The key to a surprise like that is to actually keep it a surprise. Myself and the Grammys went to great lengths to make sure that Adele was authentically surprised in the moment, and she was.”
As he referenced in his Instagram post, Johnson was later able to present Adele with the award for pop solo performance, and reflected on that in the interview as well.
“Talk about the universe meeting our friendship halfway: I get up onstage and I open that Grammy envelope and it said ‘Adele,’” he said “So that’s why I was able to say, ‘Get up here best friend, Adele!’ It was such a special night. And she’s such a special, iconic, brilliant, inspiring artist who has inspired a generation and who will continue to inspire generations to come. I love that woman.”

Justice for Renaissance! A skywriter appeared above the city of Los Angeles on Monday (Feb. 6) to remind Beyoncé exactly who she is after her loss at the 2023 Grammy Awards.
Users across social media spotted the airplane’s message in the sky, which couldn’t be any more loud and clear: “BEYONCÉ, YOU MADE MUSIC HISTORY.”
Indeed, while the icon lost out on her fourth chance at album of the year after Harry Styles was named the winner for Harry’s House, she broke the record for the most Grammy win in history by adding four new gramophones to her collection of 32 wins out of 88 total nominations.
And while no one has yet to take credit for the BeyHive-approved message in the sky, Bey’s husband Jay-Z shrugged off the awards show jockeying entirely in an interview with TIDAL published after his wife’s loss. Calling the whole process behind the Grammys race “a marketing thing,” the rapper still lobbied that Renaissance was more than worthy of The Recording Academy’s top prize, saying, “Look what it’s done to the culture. Look how the energy of the world moved…Everyone’s inspired. It has inspired the world.”
Instead, Queen Bey did take home Grammys for best dance recording for Renaissance lead single “Break My Soul,” best R&B song for fan-favorite track “Cuff It,” best traditional R&B vocal performance for deep cut “Plastic Off the Sofa” and best dance/electronica album for the house-inspired studio set as a whole.

She’s got big Swift energy! Latto declared herself a fan of Taylor Swift by posting a selfie with the superstar from the 2023 Grammy Awards on Monday (Feb. 6).
In the snapshot, Latto sticks her tongue out as Tay plants a kiss on her cheek from her table at Crypto.com Arena. “Swiftie,” the rapper wrote simply in the caption, using a clinking champagne emoji and a pink heart to punctuate her sentiment.
Both artists were nominated at this year’s Grammy Awards, with Swift winning the prize for best music video (for All Too Well: The Short Film) and earning nods for song of the year (for the 10-minute version of the Red (Taylor’s Version) favorite) and best country song (for “I Bet You Think About Me (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault)”), while Latto was up for both best new artist and best melodic rap performance (for the live version of her breakthrough hit “Big Energy”).
Elsewhere in the ceremony, the Midnights singer reunited with ex-boyfriend Harry Styles, who eventually went on to win not only best pop vocal album, but also album of the year for his 2022 album Harry’s House. She also celebrated Viola Davis reaching EGOT status on her personal social media accounts following the How to Get Away with Murder actor’s historic win for best audio book, narration, and storytelling recording.
Before she lost out on the best new artist trophy to Samara Joy, Latto opened up to Billboard ahead of this year’s Grammys about why she still considers herself a new artist, reasoning, “Every month I feel like I’m constantly evolving. Especially the content I’m about to roll out — it’s a whole fresh new me.”
