With awards season well underway, LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD is ready to celebrate queer talent in the entertainment industry with the 2024 GLAAD Media Awards.
On Wednesday (Jan. 17), GLAAD announced the full list of nominees for their annual awards, which will take place in Los Angeles on Thursday, March 14, and in New York City on Saturday, May 11. Among the two major music categories at the annual ceremony, a total of 20 openly queer artists received plaudits.
In the awardsâ main music category for outstanding music artist, GLAAD nominated Miley Cyrus, Janelle Monae, Boygenius, Billy Porter, Sam Smith, Troye Sivan, Brandy Clark, Kim Petras, Renee Rapp and Victoria Monet for their albums released in 2023.
Meanwhile, in the outstanding breakthrough music artist category â which celebrates new acts that earned new levels of mainstream success in 2023 â GLAAD named Chappell Roan, David Archuleta, Fancy Hagood, G Flip, Ice Spice, Iniko, Jade LeMac, The Scarlet Opera, Slayyyter and UMI as nominees.
Billboard also received two nominations at this yearâs GLAAD Media Awards: one for outstanding print article for our June 2023 cover featuring Maren Morris in conversation with drag artists Sasha Colby, Symone, Eureka OâHara and Landon Cider, and another for outstanding magazine overall coverage (digital and print).
In a statement released with the nominations, GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis congratulated this yearâs honorees and celebrated the organizationâs long history of supporting the LGBTQ community. âFor 35 years, the GLAAD Media Awards has provided the global stage for LGBTQ creators, alongside industry talent and leaders to be celebrated and supported,â she said. âAt a time when the LGBTQ community is under attack by false narratives and misinformation ⌠this yearâs nominees powerfully reflect the realities of LGBTQ existence today, in our communities and around the globe.â

On Wednesday (April 12), GLAAD announced that country-pop star Maren Morris and Queer Eyeâs Jonathan Van Ness would be receiving special honors at the 2023 GLAAD Media Awards in New York City on Saturday, May 13.
Morris is set to receive the organizationâs excellence in media award, given out each year to âallies who have made a significant difference in promoting acceptance of LGBTQ people,â according to a press release from GLAAD. The singer has been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ rights in recent years, teaming up with GLAAD and other organizations to protest recent anti-LGBTQ bills passed in the U.S.
Van Ness, meanwhile, will be the first non-binary recipient of the Vito Russo award (named after the GLAAD co-founder and ACT UP activist), which is presented annually to âa LGBTQ media professional who has made a significant difference in accelerating LGBTQ acceptance.â
The pair of stars are just the latest celebrities to receive special recognition from the organization. In March, Christina Aguilera and Bad Bunny were honored at the organizationâs Los Angeles ceremony with the advocate for change and vanguard awards, respectively. In her speech, Aguilera called on the audience listening to âraise our voices if we want to live in a world that is free of discrimination, hate and violence.â Bad Bunny, meanwhile, specifically thanked the LGBTQ community âfor embracing me, for loving me the way they do, and for inspiring me, too.â

Along with celebrating the queer community at large, the GLAAD Media Awards make sure to give vocal allies their flowers for supporting the LGBTQ community â and this year, the organization is recognizing two massive stars for their unyielding efforts.
On Wednesday (Feb. 8), GLAAD announced that recording artists Bad Bunny and Christina Aguilera would be the recipients of two allyship awards at its annual ceremony in Los Angeles taking place March 30. The organization also announced that out actor Jeremy Pope would receive the Stephen F. Kolzak award for his work in raising visibility for LGBTQ media professionals.
Bad Bunny is set to receive the annual vanguard award, which is presented to âallies who have made a significant difference in promoting acceptance of LGBTQ people and issues.â Past honorees include mega-stars such as BeyoncĂŠ and Jay-Z, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears and Cher. Speaking on Bunnyâs inclusion, GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said that the starâs consistent advocacy â whether through live performances, music videos or elsewhere â âredefines the positive influence Latin music artists can have within the LGBTQ community, and has set an example for all artists.â
Aguilera will receive the advocate for change award, given to âa person who, through their work, has changed the game for LGBTQ people around the world.â The only two past recipients of the award are President Bill Clinton and pop superstar Madonna. Ellis said that through the dedication of her hit song âBeautifulâ to the queer community, her work in raising money for HIV research and her staunch opposition to anti-queer policies in the U.S., Aguilera âloudly and proudly raises the bar for what it means to be a LGBTQ ally today.â
GLAAD previously announced their official nominees for the 2023 GLAAD Media Awards, including LGBTQ artists such as Demi Lovato, Kim Petras, Anitta, Fletcher and many more for their work in creating queer art in 2022.
With awards season officially in full swing, GLAAD is ready to celebrate the LGBTQ artists who thrived throughout 2022.
On Wednesday (Jan. 18), GLAAD announced the nominees for the 2023 GLAAD Media Awards. Set to take place on March 30, 2023, at Los Angelesâ Beverly Hilton as well as May the 13, 2023, at New York Cityâs Hilton Midtown, the annual awards presentation aims to shine a spotlight on the creatives who helped push narratives about the LGBTQ community forward throughout 2022.
In the awards showâs main music category for outstanding music artist, 10 queer artists received recognition for their 2022 albums, including Demi Lovato, Kim Petras, Anitta, Fletcher, Hayley Kiyoko, MUNA, Betty Who, Honey Dijon, Orville Peck and Rina Sawayama.

Additionally, in the category for outstanding breakthrough music artist â which celebrates newer acts that gained mainstream attention in 2022 â another 10 queer artists earned nominations, including Steve Lacy, Dove Cameron, Omar Apollo, Doechii, Renee Rapp, Brooke Eden, Dreamer Isioma, Ethel Cain, Isaac Dunbar and Jordy.
In a statement released alongside the nominations, GLAADâs CEO and president Sarah Kate Ellis condemned the continued attacks against the community, noting the continued importance of LGBTQ stories being told. âWith violence, harmful legislation, false rhetoric and other attacks on the LGBTQ community continuing to escalate, itâs more crucial than ever that our community remains visible and included in the stories that the world sees,â she wrote. âThis year we have more nominees than ever before to represent immensely impactful projects that entertain, educate, and grow acceptance of LGBTQ people.â
