Benzino has defended R. Kelly, stating he shouldn’t have gotten so much jail time for sexual abuse charges, leaving social media to blast his stance online. As R. Kelly continues to serve time in prison for child sex abuse charges including sex trafficking, Benzino has turned heads with asking why the disgraced singer is receiving such harsh punishment. The rapper and former co-founder of The Source voiced his opinion during the April 24 episode of his We In Miami Podcast. At the 12-minute mark of the episode, Benzino cites the fact that the age of consent in most states in America is at 16. “Again, the legal age is 16 years old,” Benzino said. “Does that make it right if a n—a does it? Yes or no?” After everyone collectively agreed it was “wrong” and “disgusting”, Benzino continued.

“Alright but it’s legal in America,” Benzino said. “Why the f—k is R. Kelly doing all this time? You know why because they’re 14 and 13. Two years younger. But you don’t think that the people who cleared it for 16 years old didn’t know that they were f—king with 13, 14-year-olds, too. For the age that young to be the law, you already know they goin’ under that. I’m not condoning with little girls, it’s sick. Alright, it’s sick, but I don’t think R. Kelly should rot in jail for 30 years either.”
The video went viral, with some bizarrely agreeing with Benzino, but many more blasting the Boston native for his comments given the heinous nature of R. Kelly’s crimes. Since the clip hit social media on Wednesday (May 1), the fallout has been constant with Benzino’s daughter Coi Leray emphatically distancing herself from him in posts on X, formerly Twitter. “I want everybody to know I want nothing to do with anything my father has going on,” she wrote. “I haven’t spoken to him in over a year and I don’t condone or respect any of them interviews he got going on. I don’t respect his decisions and I really want nothing to do with him please don’t even think of me when you see him.”

There is still an obvious strain between Benzino and Coi Leray. He has denied that he is jealous of his daughter’s success she alleged he is envious of her.

As spotted on HipHopDX the emerging Rap talent recently paid a visit to the Angie Martinez IRL podcast. While Coi discussed a variety of topics regarding her ascent to fame it was her response regarding her father that soon went viral. When asked how the Made Men member is handling her stardom the “Players” rapper revealed she has seen some signs of envy. “At first it was rocky because I felt like he couldn’t handle my success I felt like it it did come from an envious place which is OK cuz he’s human and it’s fine,” she explained. “But I felt like he’s one of those people that feels like, ‘Yo, like I still have a story to tell.’ You know, I still feel like something I have to say something.” She went on to add “Like, nooo. But he’s like, ‘I have to say something”.

XXL Magazine reports that the clip eventually landed on Benzino’s radar and he responded on social media on a post dated Saturday, November 11. “This has to be the most ridiculous [poop emoji] I’ve heard in my entire life on this earth. How tf can be envious towards someone I RAISED, NUTURED, PROVIDED FOR, INFLUENCED AND LOVE VERY DEARLY???,” he wrote. He went on to further express his frustration towards Coi’s logic. “In my 40 years in hip hop I’ve never ever seen an artist DOG their parents out the was Coi does and it’s embarrassing and sad…and one last thing, @angiemartinez knows she doesn’t like me so she’s just being manipulative and messy,” he added.

He continued his rant that it clear that he will not tolerate any more disrespect of his name. “They want me crash out but I’ve worked on myself so hard that I ain’t going backwards for ANYTHING, but what I won’t do is allow ANYONE to slander my name and push a false narrative on my reputation and who I am. I’ve shed too many blood, sweat and tears, survived street wars and indictments. Nope no more”.

OG Hip-Hopper’s remember that Benzino was never one to hold his tongue when it came to calling out his rap peers for whatever reason, and now his daughter seems to be taking after her daddy as Coi Leray has a bone to pick with Latto over some bars shit spit on her latest single.

Last night Latto released her new record “Put It On Da Floor” and on the record Latto surprisingly threw some darts Coi Leray’s way when she spoke on her physical degree her with her line, “Smoking on that gas blunt big as Coi Leray/ B*tches like to run they mouth, but I’m the type to run a fade.” While it could seem as a simple metaphor describing how big of a blunt Latto is smoking on, Coi Leray took it personal and immediately took to Twitter to call out her new rival for body shaming her on the track.

Again, it could’ve been a simple metaphor, but Coi was having none of that and accused Latto of trying to instigate a rap beef with her latest cut and tweeted a few thoughts that voiced her displeasure with the line.

As of now, Latto has yet to respond to Coi’s allegations that the line was a direct shot at her, but this wouldn’t be Latto’s first time beefing with a rap peer. Just last year Latto got into a back-and-forth with the Queen rapper herself, Nicki Minaj and though that social media spat did absolutely nothing for her career, Latto seemed to have no problem going head-to-head with an artist who is light years ahead of her in her rap career.

Now that she’s seemingly going after Coi Leray, it will be interesting to see whether this leads to diss tracks or a simple social media feud that could prove to be more engaging than your average rap cut. Just sayin.’
What do y’all think of Latto’s line on “Put It On Da Floor”? Was Latto coming for Coi or was it just a metaphor that Leray read too much into? Let us know in the comments section below.

Coi Leray is one of the hottest new female rap stars, and now her father Benzino has weighed in on her dating life.

The TV personality appeared on Ray Daniels’ The Gauds Show podcast this week, where he expressed his hesitation about her daughter dating another rapper. He mentioned Chief Keef as an example, sharing, “If my daughter brought home Chief Keef, my life is f—ed. And Chief Keef is one of my favorite young artists, ‘I’m a Gorilla in a zoo’ and all that, but I don’t want my daughter with Chief Keef.”

However, the former The Source owner had a change of tune when asked if he’d be OK with Leray linking up with someone like J. Cole or Kendrick Lamar (both of whom have longterm partners and children). “Maybe J. Cole,” he said. “You know what? I wasn’t thinking about J. Cole. I could see me and J. Cole kicking it. Coi in there cooking and me and him sitting watching the game. I could see me and J. Cole doing that. J. Cole a good one.”

While Coi is currently single, she’s been previously linked to stars like Pressa, Blueface, and Trippie Redd. On the music front, the star’s been heating up the charts with her hit “Players,” which peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Watch Benzino’s interview below.

A new remix of Sabrina Carpenter‘s “Nonsense” arrived Thursday (March 23) and features Coi Leray spitting on the track, as well as taking over the track’s closing signature cheeky lines in the final verse.

Leray hops in on the second verse on the track and details a relationship with a guy who can’t help but get overly attached to her in a short space of time. “Yeah, this boy got me goin’ crazy (Yeah)/ We just started dating, now he say he want a baby (Uh?)/ He said, ‘Coi, you so amazin’/ You a freak in the sheets and the streets, you such a lady’/ He like when I’m talkin’ pop sh–/ It’s your bedtime, come and lay up in it,” she raps.

And as for the track’s outro, which has seen multiple versions and changes from Carpenter herself, Leray shouted out the pop star for letting her hop on the track: “This song harder than keepin’ a secret/ He said my head’s crazy, I’m a genius/ What’s better than one pop star? It’s two, bi—/ It’s Coi Leray and ‘Brina on the remix.”

“Nonsense” was originally released as the fifth single from Carpenter’s fifth studio album, Emails I Can’t Send. A deluxe edition of the album, Emails I Can’t Send Fwd, was release March 17. The track peaked at No. 56 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated Feb. 4.

Listen to the “Nonsense” remix below.

Coi Leray notched her fourth entry on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart with “Players,” her TikTok-viral hit that’s currently sitting at No. 12 as of March 25, 2023.
When asked when she knew she made it, Leray told Billboard at Rolling Loud California, “When I found out I was on the top 10 U.K. charts, and then the top 20 pop charts and then the top 20 Billboard [Hot 100]. That was a big stepping stone for me because my dream was to cross over. Of course, I love Billboard. I look up to you guys. You guys are watching me grow, so I can’t wait to show you how much more I have for you.”

When asked when she knew she made it, the “Players” rapper shared, “When I found out I was on the top 10 U.K. charts, and then the top 20 pop charts and then the top 20 Billboard [Hot 100]. That was a big stepping stone for me because my dream was to cross over. Of course, I love Billboard. I look up to you guys. “Players” is Leray’s fourth entry on the Hot 100 (currently sitting at No. 16), after “No More Parties,” featuring Lil Durk (No. 26 peak in 2021); “Big Purr (Prrdd),” with Pooh Shiesty (No. 69, 2021); and “Blick Blick!,” with Nicki Minaj (No. 37, 2022).

As for the new generation of female rappers emerging in the music industry right now, like Coi Leray herself and Ice Spice, the 25-year-old said that the new girls in town are all about positivity. “It’s just confidence. We’re giving you good vibes, good energy, good music,” she said.

The song, released in November via Uptown/Republic Records, jumps 38-28 in its sixth week on the Billboard Hot 100, with 29.1 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 20%), 9.4 million U.S. streams (up 23%) and 5,000 downloads sold (up 2%) Feb. 3-9, according to Luminate.

The track became Leray’s fourth entry on the Hot 100, after “No More Parties,” featuring Lil Durk (No. 26 peak in 2021); “Big Purr (Prrdd),” with Pooh Shiesty (No. 69, 2021); and “Blick Blick!,” with Nicki Minaj (No. 37, 2022).

“Players” also holds at its No. 4 high on Hot Rap Songs and ascends 13-10 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. It additionally pushes 6-4 on Rap Airplay and 9-6 on Rhythmic Airplay, holds at its No. 11 best on both R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and climbs 28-23 on Pop Airplay.

Just below Leray, Samara Joy jumps 45-2 on Emerging Artists thanks to gains following her best new artist win at the Grammy Awards Feb. 5. Joy’s 2022 LP Linger Awhile rises to No. 1 on Jazz Albums, Traditional Jazz Albums and Heatseekers Albums, leading all three lists for the first time, and debuts at No. 158 on the Billboard 200. Plus, her self-titled 2021 set debuts at No. 7 on both Jazz Albums and Traditional Jazz Albums.

Joy became the first jazz act to win best new artist at the Grammys since Esperanza Spalding in 2011.

The Emerging Artists chart ranks the most popular developing artists of the week, using the same formula as the all-encompassing Billboard Artist 100, which measures artist activity across multiple Billboard charts, including the Hot 100, Billboard 200 and the Social 50. (The Artist 100 lists the most popular acts, overall, each week.) However, the Emerging Artists chart excludes acts that have notched a top 25 entry on either the Hot 100 or Billboard 200, as well as artists that have achieved two or more top 10s on Billboard’s “Hot” song genre charts and/or consumption-based “Top” album genre rankings.
