Drake Pays Tribute to Mother & Daughter Killed After His Show

Drake is sending love to a mother and daughter who were tragically killed after his concert at Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Mo.

“You never know what somebody else’s reality will be when they walk out of this building,” the rapper told the crowd in Buffalo, N.Y., on Wednesday night (Feb. 28), according to TMZ. “Rest in peace to that young mother and her child,” he added, encouraging fans to show love to the strangers around them.

Laticha Bracero and Alyssa Cordova were leaving Drake and J. Cole’s joint It’s All a Blur – Big As the What? tour stop in St. Louis on Feb. 13 when they were hit by a speeding car that ran a red light, as seen in terrifying footage posted by TMZ. The St. Louis Metropolitan police department reported that Bracero passed away at the scene, while Cordova died later at the hospital.

The suspect, Monte Henderson, was arrested charged with two counts of armed criminal action and involuntary manslaughter, speeding his SUV at 70 mph.

Bracero’s sister set up a GoFundMe after the news to raise money for a funeral and to transfer their bodies back to their hometown of Chicago. At the time of publication, nearly $40,000 has been raised. “Lety was a hard working regional supervisor at Wintrust bank and a dedicated mother, loving sister, niece/cousin,” the description reads. “Her only child Alyssa was going to college and working part time for Starbucks. Alyssa loved music concerts and although was old enough to travel to concerts on her own, her mom would always escort her. The two were inseparable and shared a strong bond.”

Feds Accuse NBA YoungBoy of Using Drugs While on House Arrest and Refusing to Stop

Federal prosecutors are accusing NBA YoungBoy (a.k.a. YoungBoy Never Broke Again) of violating the terms of his house arrest by using unspecified drugs — and of telling his supervising officers that he has “no intentions” of stopping.

In a filing Thursday (Feb. 29), prosecutors asked a Louisiana federal judge to set a hearing to deal with the rapper’s “noncompliant behavior” while he awaits a July trial on federal gun charges. They say he violated a rule forbidding him to “use or unlawfully possess a narcotic drug or other controlled substance” while under house arrest.

“The undersigned has learned that the defendant has violated [this rule] and has informed his supervising officer that he has no intentions to discontinue using the substance that resulted in the violation,” U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Gathe, Jr. wrote in the filing.

Trending on Billboard

The filing did not specify what drug YoungBoy is accused of using. The rapper’s attorneys did not return a request for comment; they will likely file a formal response to the allegation in the days ahead.

YoungBoy was indicted by Louisiana federal prosecutors in March 2021 on charges of “felon in possession of a firearm” after he was allegedly found with two guns during a September 2020 incident in Baton Rouge, La. Possessing guns would be illegal for YoungBoy since the rapper was previously convicted in 2017 of aggravated assault with a firearm.

When he was arrested in Los Angeles on those charges, another gun was found in his car, leading to a similar case brought by California federal prosecutors. YoungBoy was acquitted on those charges following a July 2022 trial, but he’s still facing a looming trial in Louisiana over the original indictment.

While awaiting trial, YoungBoy has been confined to his Salt Lake City mansion — a house arrest that has now lasted more than two full years. In October, his attorneys pleaded that the “long period of social isolation” was harming his mental health. They asked that the judge loosen restrictions, including allowing him to travel to a recording studio to create new music. But that request was largely denied in November.

YoungBoy’s trial is scheduled to kick off on Jul. 15 and is expected to run for two weeks.

Universal Music Publishing Group Focuses on TikTok’s ‘Harmful’ Approach to AI in Letter to Songwriters

Just days after the Universal Music Group‘s publishing catalog began coming down from TikTok, Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) released a new statement stressing its concerns about artificial intelligence and online safety on the short-form video app. The company stated these are “equally” important issues to TikTok lack of “fair compensation” to songwriters.

UMPG also acknowledged in its new statement that “the disruption is difficult for some of [its songwriters]” but says leaving the TikTok app is “critical for the sustained future value, safety and health of the entire music ecosystem.”

At the end of January, UMG announced in a letter to its artists and songwriters that it would be allowing its license with TikTok to expire, saying that TikTok refused to pay the “fair value” of music and no deal could be reached. (Tiktok fired back with its own statement, hours later, saying UMG’s decision was motivated by “greed”.) Within days, UMG tracks were removed from Tiktok en masse, including the catalogs of superstars Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Drake, BTS and more who are signed to UMG record labels. In the letter, the company noted that these takedowns would also include its publishing arm, UMPG, but the publishing-related removals did not begin until Tuesday, Feb. 26.

Trending on Billboard

Now, any song, even if it was released by a non-UMG record label, is subject to takedown on TikTok if even one UMPG-signed songwriter was involved in its creation. Because UMPG is the second largest publisher in the world, these publishing takedowns were wide reaching, impacting almost every record label in one way or another.

In response to the publishing takedowns, TikTok said in a statement on Wednesday, “[UMG’s] actions not only affect the songwriters and artists that they represent, but now also impact many artists and songwriters not signed to Universal. We remain committed to reaching an equitable agreement with Universal Music Group.”

Read UMPG’s new statement to its songwriters below in full:

TikTok is removing UMPG songs because there is no license in place. As you may have heard, to-date, they have not agreed to recognize the fair value of your songs, which so many other digital partners around the world have done.

As we previously addressed in our open letter, in addition to fair compensation for your songs, the negotiations have also focused on two other critical and equally important issues: protecting you, human artists and songwriters, from the harmful effects of AI; and online safety for TikTok’s users, including your fans which include young children.

TikTok’s intentions with respect to AI are increasingly apparent. While refusing to respond to our concerns about AI depriving songwriters from fair compensation, or provide assurances that they will not train their AI models on your songs, recent media reports reveal “TikTok and ByteDance leaders have long wanted to move the app beyond music.” Reflecting on our open letter, other commentators have noted where this distancing from the music industry could lead, fueled by AI: “TikTok has an incentive to push the use of these AI recordings rather than the copyrighted and licensed recordings.”

Every indication is that they simply do not value your music.

We understand the disruption is difficult for some of you and your careers, and we are sensitive to how this may affect you around the world. We recognize that this might be uncomfortable at the moment. But it is critical for the sustained future value, safety and health of the entire music ecosystem, including all music fans.

As always, UMPG will only support partners that value songwriters, artists and your songs.  We have a long history of successfully fighting for our songwriters and will continue to do so. You should expect nothing less from us.

Justin Timberlake Reveals ‘Drown’ Vocals Were the Original Demo Recording

“‘Drown’ happened very quickly,” Timberlake is seen telling his fans in a casual video sitting at the piano. “Myself, Kenyon Dixon, Amy Allen along with Cirkut and and Louis Bell. It’s the first one I actually wrote with Lou Bell and Cirkut. The song wrote itself so quickly. It kind of annoyed me, because sometimes you have this thing like, ‘Oh, if you didn’t struggle to write the song, maybe it’s not worth it.’”

He continued, “The more I listened back to it and the more I played it for people, the more it was like, ‘No, this sounds like you.’ When I think back to songs like that, where I kind of underestimated that ability to have that familiarity or catch on with people, the last time was ‘Mirrors.’ I sat on that song for, like, five years.”

Trending on Billboard

Timberlake added another “fun fact” to the mix, sharing, “The vocal that you hear is the demo vocal. I recorded it line by line as we were writing it, just to demo it out. The most we listened back to it, the more it had this honesty to it that I didn’t want to change anything.”

“Drown” serves as JT’s official follow-up to “Selfish,” which debuted at No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100, earning Timberlake his highest debut in six years on Billboard’s marquee singles chart. The lead single from Everything I Thought It Was also marked Timberlake’s 29th top 40 hit as a soloist.

In support of his new LP, Timberlake is set to embark on a headlining North American arena tour. The tour will kick off April 29 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, B.C., and visit major cities such as Las Vegas (May 10-11), New York (Jun. 25-26) and Atlanta (Nov. 16), before concluding Nov. 20 at KFC Yum Center in Louisville, Ky.

Watch his rundown of “Drown” below. Everything I Thought It Was is out March 15.

Kacey Musgraves & Sydney Sweeney Are Excited for ‘Girl Power’ in New ‘SNL’ Promos

Sydney Sweeney is making her Saturday Night Live hosting debut this weekend (March 2), alongside musical guest Kacey Musgraves.

In a series of new promos for the episode, SNL cast member Heidi Gardner expresses excitement for the “girl power” of the three girls in the scene. “Love this group of three strong ladies. I bet so many women are going to tune in this week,” Gardner says, before Sweeney expresses, “Weirdly, a lot of my fans are men.”

“Hm, I wonder why,” Musgraves responds.

Musgraves is taking the stage as musical guest for SNL for the third time, having previously done it in May 2018 and October 2021. On the heels of winning her seventh Grammy honor Feb. 4 (for best country duo/group performance with Zach Bryan for “I Remember Everything”), Kacey Musgraves will release her fifth studio album, Deeper Well, on March 15, via Interscope/MCA Nashville. The project follows her previous project, Star-Crossed, which released in 2021.

In a statement, Musgraves explained that she took inspiration for the new album from the energy in New York City’s Greenwich Village and that she recorded the project at the iconic Electric Lady studios. The album will “serve as a lens focusing on moments of life that often go unnoticed, turning them into timeless songs that strike a chord deep within listeners. Saturn returns, cardinals embody a dead friend, love is given and taken, streets rush by, belongings are packed and old chapters deserted, new love blooms, jade bracelets serve as talismans, deep lessons emerge, small details define everything, the woods are a refuge and New York City serves as the same gleaming beacon as Oz.”

Layoffs Are Underway at Universal Music Group

The layoffs and restructuring at the Universal Music Group have begun to take place, multiple sources tell Billboard.

As part of the new structure, several top executives have been laid off, Billboard can confirm. Interscope Geffen A&M president of promotion Brenda Romano is among those to have been let go, as well as Interscope’s executive vp/head of media strategy and communications Cara Donatto and Def Jam executive vp of media and brand strategy Gabe Tesoriero.

So far, Billboard has confirmed over two dozen layoffs across UMG labels, including Interscope, Republic, Capitol, Def Jam and Island.

The layoffs began shortly after Universal wrapped up its fourth quarter earnings call Wednesday, during which chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge confirmed a long-rumored “strategic organizational redesign” that would result in “reduced headcount” and “efficiencies.” A UMG spokesperson declined to say how many staffers would be affected by the cuts, but the company told investors that it expected to realize 250 million euros ($271 million) in annual savings by 2026 through the move. Universal saw 11.11 billion euros ($12 billion) in revenue in 2023, and reaped a net profit of 1.26 billion euros ($1.37 billion).

Trending on Billboard

The layoffs had been in the offing since last October, when Grainge mentioned that UMG would need to “cut to grow” in a Q3 earnings call, then said in a January New Year’s memo to staff that despite UMG being the “most successful company in the history of the music industry,” the company would “further evolve our organizational structure to create efficiencies in other areas of the business, so we can remain nimble and responsive to opportunities as they arise, while also taking advantage of the benefits of our scale.” A spokesperson then confirmed cuts were coming in a statement Jan. 12, after Bloomberg reported the company planned to cut “hundreds” of jobs in the first quarter of the year.

Layoffs continued Thursday (Feb. 29), and some staffers speculated to Billboard that they may continue into Friday. There is no word on how many people were affected, nor any specifics in what departments they were, though in addition to promotions, publicity and A&R, at least some people in logistics, synch, international and commercial marketing were among the layoffs. Staff members from Republic, Interscope, Capitol, Island and Def Jam were among those laid off.

On Feb. 1, Grainge announced in an internal memo that Universal would be restructuring its label operations, adopting a loose East Coast-West Coast operation wherein Republic Records co-founder/CEO Monte Lipman would begin to oversee Republic, Def Jam, Island and Mercury, and Interscope Geffen A&M chairman/CEO John Janick would take responsibility for Interscope, Geffen, Capitol, Motown, Priority, Verve and Blue Note. Days later, Capitol Music Group chair/CEO Michelle Jubelirer announced she was stepping down from her post and was replaced by Geffen president Tom March as chairman/CEO of Capitol and Universal Music Publishing Group executive Lillia Parsa joining as co-president alongside Arjun Pulijal.

As part of the new alignment, and with Donatto and Tesoriero out at Interscope and Def Jam, respectively, it appears that Capitol Music Group executive vp/head of media strategy and relations Ambrosia Healy will now run corporate communications for the West Coast labels, and Republic Records executive vp of media and artist relations Joe Carozza will oversee corporate communications for the East Coast labels.

Reps for UMG did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Additionally, reps for several individual labels either declined to comment or could not be reached for comment.

This story is developing.

6 Cozy Weighted Blankets That’ll Help You Get a Better Night of Sleep

All products and services featured are independently chosen by editors. However, Billboard may receive a commission on orders placed through its retail links, and the retailer may receive certain auditable data for accounting purposes.

The weight of a long day can make falling asleep difficult, but that doesn’t mean we have to settle for a restless night. Around 20 million Americans struggle to fall asleep at night, according to Penn Medicine, and while having a solid mattress and comfortable pillows are helpful, those aren’t the only tools that can help you get a full night of sleep.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to falling asleep quickly — some of us may require complete silence while others may need to listen to music through their earbuds, but incorporating a weighted blanket may just be one solution to help catch some zzzs faster.

Trending on Billboard

Penn Medicine adds that using a weighted blanket can also act as a stress relieving tool, helping to reduce stress, anxiety and even some sleep disorders.

There are also a number of weighted blankets you can buy online that you can customize to your sleep habits whether you need cooling materials, a washable design or something to prevent you from tossing and turning. Here are some of the best weighted blankets to consider.

What Is the Best Weighted Blanket Material?

Unlike your traditional comforter or wearable blanket, a weighted blanket is usually filled with small glass beads, steel beads, plastic pellets, grains (like rice or beans) or sand. This is where the weight comes from, which will help swaddle you with some pressure that you’d normally have to stack multiple blankets on top of one another to achieve.

If you’re a hot sleeper, you’ll most likely want a glass bead filling mixed with a temperature regulating, breathable exterior fabric like bamboo or polyester. For those looking for extra warmth, you’ll want a thicker material like sherpa or velvet that’ll help insulate your body heat.

How Heavy Should a Weighted Blanket Be?

When looking for weighted blankets for adults, you should get one that’s 10% of your body weight. Couples should aim for a weighted blanket that’s 7.5% of your combined body weight, according to Casper. And, for kids, you should utilize the 10% rule and add up to two additional pounds.

What Are the Best Weighted Blankets?

Billboard Shopping went through all the brands and bedding deals to put together our list of the best weighted blankets that’ll have your eyelids going heavy almost immediately.
