Steve Harley, Cockney Rebel & ‘Make Me Smile’ Singer, Dies at 73

Steve Harley, the frontman of British rock band Cockney Rebel, has died. He was 73.

The English singer-songwriter’s family confirmed the news of his passing through social media on Sunday (March 17).

“We are devastated to announce that Steve, our wonderful husband, father and grandfather, has passed away peacefully at home, with his family by his side,” reads the statement on Facebook. “The birdsong from his woodland that he loved so much was singing for him. His home has been filled with the sounds and laughter of his four beloved Grandchildren.”

A cause of death was not provided, but Harley noted on his website earlier this year that he would not be touring in 2024 “due to on-going treatment for cancer.”

“Steve took enormous comfort from all of his fans’ well wishes during his battle, and we know he would want to thank you all deeply for your love and support throughout his career, and during his battle to the end,” his family’s statement said. “We know he will be desperately missed by countless friends, family and devoted fans all over the world, and we ask that you respectfully allow us privacy to grieve.”

Harley is perhaps best known for Cockney Rebel’s 1975 hit “Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me),” which topped the U.K. charts. The London-born musician joined Cockney Rebel in 1972 and the glam rock band released its debut album, The Human Menagerie, the following year. The group went on to release The Psychomodo in 1974 and later renamed itself Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel following lineup changes.

Although “Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)” was not a hit in the U.S. (the song peaked at No. 98 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1976), the track has been covered more than 100 times by artists including Duran Duran, Erasure and Robbie Williams.

After Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel parted ways in 1977, Harley enjoyed a solo career, with his final release being the 2020 covers album, Uncovered, which featured renditions of songs by David Bowie, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan and others.

Jon Bon Jovi Unsure About Touring Following Vocal Cord Surgery: ‘Still Recovering’

Jon Bon Jovi is opening about whether he’ll be able to tour after undergoing vocal cord surgery in 2022.

In a recent radio interview, the iconic Bon Jovi frontman, 61, said that he’s still recovering from the medical procedure and can’t confirm if he’ll be able to hit the road in support of the New Jersey band’s forthcoming album, Forever, which arrives this summer.

“I don’t know about a tour,” Bon Jovi told Mix 104.1 Boston. “It is my desire to do a tour next year, but I’m just still recovering from a major surgery.”

The “Livin’ on a Prayer” singer underwent surgery in 2022 after one of his vocal cords was “atrophying” — with one being “thick as the thumb” and the other being “thick as a pinky,” according to People.

Illenium Brings Body-Ratting Bass To SXSW: 5 Best Moments From His Billboard Headlining Show

Illenium helped close out SXSW 2024 with a performance that was quite certainly one of the week’s heaviest when he played the third and final show of Billboard’s annual THE STAGE at SXSW concert series on Saturday, March 17.

While the evening forecast in Austin had called for thunderstorms, the weather cooperated and no storms, or even sprinkles, materialized during the sold-out show. The performance drew 5,000 people — many of them wearing the jerseys that are Illenium’s signature merch item — to Austin’s Moody Amphitheater within Waterloo Park.

The night opened with a set from Canadian producer Fairlane, who played a litany of remixes of emo and nu-metal classics by artists including Fall Out Boy, Green Day and Linkin Park, adding his own guitar solos over many of them.

Then, Illenium — who also wore an Illenium jersey, along with a backwards baseball hat — came onstage at 9:30 p.m. and immediately launched into a giddily heavy set built from body-pummeling bass music interspersed with his signature pop oriented future bass anthems and a litany of tracks by a strong crew of other bass realm artists. The atmosphere in the park was hyped throughout the set, which was punctuated by bursts of fire emanating from the stage, along with dynamic visuals.

THE STAGE takes place from March 14-16 as part of SXSW, Austin’s annual music, film and tech festival, and features performances from Billboard’s latest cover stars: PartyNextDoor, Christian Nodal, and Illenium.

Last year’s THE STAGE headliners included Lil Yachty, Feid and Kx5.

Madonna Fan in Wheelchair Responds to Concert Callout: ‘She Had No Idea’

“What are you doing sitting down over there? What are you getting sitting down?” Madonna was heard asking in the clip, singling out concertgoer Vanessa Gorman at one of her recent shows on the career-spanning Celebration Tour. The star then made her way to the edge of the stage to get a closer look.

When Madonna realized the woman was in a wheelchair, she changed her tune, saying, “Oh, okay. Politically incorrect. Sorry about that.”

“I’m glad you are here,” Madonna said, directing her comment toward Gorman, who was interviewed about the viral moment by TMZ.

As a fan, Gorman admitted she was starstruck over being noticed — not offended — and said that she knew it was a mistake. In fact, in a video taken from her viewpoint, Gorman can even be heard shouting, “I love you!” to Madonna during the interaction.

“Some people are in wheelchairs and can stand. She had no idea I was paralyzed,” Gorman, who is a paraplegic from a motor vehicle accident in 1999, told TMZ on Friday (March 15).

She noted that she was glad Madonna apologized right away, and that she went on to enjoy the rest of the show.

Billboard recently attended Madonna’s last of five nights of The Celebration Tour at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California. Hear all about that experience on this week’s episode of the Pop Shop Podcast.

Kelce, who recently made the trek to Singapore to support Swift’s Eras Tour, and Keoghan, who did the same for Swift’s opening act Carpenter, were reportedly both spotted at Justin Timberlake‘s pre-album release show at The Wiltern in Los Angeles on Wednesday night (March 13).

On Friday, Keoghan posted a snapshot on Instagram Stories of himself with new pal Kelce, presumably backstage at the concert.

“When BK met TK,” he captioned the update. The picture shows Kelce smiling and giving a rock ‘n’ roll sign, while Keoghan leans in with a peace sign.

At the gig, which featured a surprise live reunion from *NSYNC with the debut of new ballad “Paradise,” a track from Timberlake’s new Everything I Thought I Was album, Kelce also met Chris Kirkpatrick and the singer’s seven-year-old son, Nash.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end took a sweet photo with Nash, which Kirkpatrick shared on Instagram on Thursday along with the caption “What an amazing night topped off by this special moment when @killatrav took a picture with Nash.”

Kelce and Swift first made their relationship public when the pop superstar started attending his Chiefs games in September.

Rumors of Keoghan and Carpenter’s romance were confirmed just recently, when the actor was caught on camera waiting for the Emails I Can’t Send singer by the stage at Singapore National Stadium earlier this month. The couple were filmed embracing after she wrapped one of her opening sets for Swift on The Eras Tour. Days later, they walked the red carpet together at the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty and later posed for a cute photo together at the event.

“It’s just something that you can’t control that just happens and during those two weeks,” Dre said to Corden on Thursday (March 14) while speaking of his hospitalization, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I had three strokes.”

Dre recalled going to the hospital after he woke up with a feeling behind his right ear that turned into “the worst pain.”

“I got up and I went on about my day, and I thought that I could just lay down and take a nap,” he said. “My son had a female friend that was there and was like, ‘No, we need to take you to the hospital.’ So they took me to urgent care.”

He continued, “Next thing you know, I’m blacking out. I’m in and out of consciousness, and I ended up in the ICU. I was there for two weeks. I’m hearing the doctors coming in and saying, ‘You don’t know how lucky you are.’”

The music mogul received treatment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He thanked his medical team for providing “excellent care” in a statement in 2021.

Although Dre asked doctors what he could’ve done to prevent the aneurysm, “nobody could give me an answer,” he said. “I had no idea that I had high blood pressure or anything like that because I’m on my health s—. I’m lifting weights, I’m running, I’m doing everything I can to keep myself healthy.”

“High blood pressure in Black men, that’s just what it is. They call it the silent killer. You just have no idea, so you know, you have to keep your s— checked,” said Dre.

Dre said his experience “definitely makes you appreciate being alive, that’s for sure.”

The full The Life of Mine With James Corden episode with Dr. Dre is available on SiriusXM. As previously reported, Dre also chatted about Eminem, calling him “the best emcee ever. Point blank, period. Of course, there are going to be arguments about that because he’s a white guy. I don’t think anyone that’s rapping can touch Eminem on that microphone.”

After months of speculation, the PS5 Pro is real and will reportedly arrive this holiday season.

Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson has confirmed the leaked PS5 Pro specs that hit the web this week are indeed real. They confidently confined the news after speaking with a source under anonymity.

Per Insider Gaming:

Speaking with sources, who wished to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to talk about company plans, we can confirm that the leaked documentation from the YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead is real, despite the criticism of the leaker and the leaked specs. Insider Gaming can confirm that the documentation leaked is from a PlayStation developer portal, which was sent out this week to a wider band of third-party developers.

July 2023, word on the video game streets that a PS5 Pro-model code-named “Project Trinity” was in the works and game studios would begin getting their devkits in November of that same year.

The confirmed specs for the PS5 Pro are:

  • Rendering 45% faster than PS5
  • 2-3x Ray-tracing (x4 in some cases)
  • 33.5 Teraflops
  • PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling) upscaling/antialiasing solution
  • Support for resolutions up to 8K is planned for future SDK version
  • Custom machine learning architecture
  • AI Accelerator, supporting 300 TOPS of 8 bit computation / 67 TFLOPS of 16-bit floating point

Devikits and Testkits Are Rolling Out

Those are quite impressive, which means the PS5 Pro is pretty close to performing on par with powerful gaming PCs. It also sounds like it could be called the PS5 6.

Insider Gaming also reports that devkits have been available to first-party developers since September 2023, third-party had theirs since January 2024, and testkits close to the final product will be available in Spring 2024.

The PS5 Pro is tentatively on track to release in the holiday of 2024 and will arrive before the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, which could benefit immensely from more powerful hardware.

The video game streets are talking, following the news. You can see those reactions in the gallery below.
