A scholarship created in honor of the late designer Virgil Abloh will be expanded this year to have more recipients and a greater outreach beyond art and design schools.

According to reports, a scholarship fund that was created in honor of the late pioneering Black designer will be expanded. The Virgil Abloh “Post-Modern” Scholarship Fund, which benefited 30 recipients, will now go to 60 recipients in addition to offering financial grants for those aspiring to become a part of the fashion industry. Shannon Abloh and Fashion Scholarship Fund Director, Peter Arnold, announced the plan at a gala held in New York City Monday (April 8). The expansion is a welcome move by the group, which admitted having potential students turn down scholarship offers in the past due to financial hardship. Virgil Abloh, best known for his work with Off White and Louis Vuitton, succumbed to cancer in 2021.

“Some have to work,” Ms. Abloh said. “They can’t quit their job and go to school. There was a student whose laptop broke, and she couldn’t afford to replace it, so she was going to drop out of school. That’s not OK,” Abloh said in an interview with the New York Times. The Scholarship Fund was started in 2020 with $1 million in seed funding by Virgil Abloh to foster the next generation of Black designers and creators in fashion. The expansion plan will also now be available to students at community colleges and other schools not in the art and design track. There will also be opportunities for students to connect with the vast network of friends and associates that Virgil Abloh worked with including Tremaine Emory and Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, the celebrated stylist who was an early FSF recipient. “Virgil was impatient,” Shannon Abloh said. “He liked to move fast, so he would have been ready for this to happen. It was always like, ‘How can we affect the most students in the biggest way possible?’”

There are also plans to expand the Virgil Abloh Foundation’s operations and reach within the year. “The goal will be providing access and opportunities to young kids, just as the V.A.P.M. does, but in a slightly different way,” she continued. “In 20 years I want the young kid who’s interested in creative arts to find Virgil. The foundation will provide a way for them to see his work and have access to what he created.”

Yandel Sells Catalog to Beyond Music, Marking the Company’s Entry Into the Latin Market

South Korean investment and management firm Beyond Music has acquired the music catalog of Puerto Rican reggaetón star Yandel, including his publishing interests and royalties, his share of performance royalties and neighboring rights royalties.

The acquisition is a “first of its kind” for an Asian music company that’s acquiring a Latin artist’s catalog directly, according to a press release, which states that Beyond is “seeking to diversify its portfolio and [this] deal sets the company’s first footstep into the rapidly growing Latin market.” The deal follows HYBE’s acquisition of Exile Music, the music division of Spanish-language studio Exile Content, in November.

“We are deeply humbled by Yandel’s extraordinary artistry and unparalleled career and honored to partner with him as he progresses to the next height of his career,” Beyond Music CEO Jangwon Lee said in a statement. “As a leading custodian of some of the most iconic non-Anglo musical works, we seek to support a truly burgeoning creativity across Latin and Asian musical ecosystems. We see similar traits of magnificent growth in both Latin Pop and Asian Pop (K-Pop included), and hope to share and connect the best from both worlds.”

Trending on Billboard

Since its inception in 2021, Beyond Music has invested mostly in Asian catalogs and now has more than 37,000 Asian and international music rights. In December 2022, the company made its first North American acquisition when it purchased the catalog of Canadian producer-songwriter Greg Wells, who has produced and written songs with the likes of Adele, Taylor Swift, John Legend and Dua Lipa.

Acquiring Yandel’s catalog is a power move. A bonafide hitmaker, the singer-songwriter got his start in the late 1990s as one-half of the duo Wisin & Yandel, which released countless hits including “Abusadora” and “Rakata.” Yandel launched a full-fledged solo career in 2013 and has since released a total of eight solo albums, including 2013’s De Líder a Leyenda, which peaked at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Top Latin Albums chart.

Last year, Yandel scored his first solo Billboard Hot 100 entry with “Yandel 150” in collaboration with Feid. The pair released a joint EP titled Manifesting 20-05 on Thursday (April 11).

Dr. Cornel West named Black Lives Matter Grassroots founder Dr. Melina Abdullah as his running mate for his 2024 presidential campaign in a historical moment.

On Wednesday (April 10), independent presidential candidate Cornel West chose fellow academic, activist, and Black Lives Matter organizer Dr. Melina Abdullah as his vice president nominee. He announced the nomination during a virtual press conference which media personality and friend, Tavis Smiley moderated.

“She has a record of deep commitment and investment in ensuring that poor and working people are at the center of her vision,” West said of Abdullah, also calling her a “freedom fighter” in his introduction. “I wanted to to run with someone who would put a smile on the face of Fannie Lou Hamer and Martin Luther King Jr. from the grave.” The selection makes their campaign the first to have two Black candidates on the ticket in history. Abdullah is a Pan-African Studies professor at California State University, who

“I am deeply honored and humbled to join Dr. Cornel West as his Vice Presidential candidate at this critical moment as we work together for transformative change. This campaign offers a real vision for the world that stands in opposition to oppressive forces and holds fast to the universal principles of truth, justice, and love,” Abdullah said of her nomination. She also noted the other historical factors in her selection as “divine timing”, being that she is the first Muslim to be included on a presidential ticket with the announcement coming on Eid-al-Fitr, “the holiest day for Muslims.” West is a Christian who is on the faculty at the Union Theological Seminary.

Abdullah brings a distinctive presence to the race, as her teaming up with West presents an alternative to Democratic President Joe Biden and Republican Party nominee Donald Trump in the election this November, particularly as Biden has come under fire for supporting Israel during its conflict with Hamas. She was also named to the board of Black Lives Matter after co-founder Patrisse Cullors stepped down in 2021 after increased scrutiny of the social justice group’s finances were exposed in a New York Magazine article. West formerly was a People’s Party presidential candidate before switching to the Green Party weeks later.

NBA’s Jontay Porter Facing Permanent Ban For Gambling

Online gambling may be all the rage amongst sports fans, but pro sports players themselves are finding out that there are repercussions for placing bets on games, especially in their own profession.

Such is the case with NBA player Jontay Porter who’s facing the real possibility of being permanently banned from the league as he’s currently under investigation for “multiple instances of betting irregularities over the past several months.” According to ESPN, Adam Silver has bluntly stated that if the Toronto Raptors forward is found to have committed the “cardinal sin” of “playing” down or up to the over/unders set around his personal performances.

After multiple instances in which Porter’s performances (or lack thereof) in games between Jan. 26 and March 20 led to some big money making nights for betters, the NBA began an investigation. And Silver isn’t shy about laying down the law on Porter should it come to that.

Per ESPN:

“I have an enormous range of discipline available to me,” Silver said at a midtown Manhattan hotel, after the league’s annual board of governors meetings. “But it’s a cardinal sin, what he’s accused of in the NBA, and the ultimate, extreme option I have is to ban him from the game.

“That’s the level of authority I have here. Because there’s nothing more serious, I think, around this league when it comes to gambling: betting on our games. And that is a direct player involvement. And so, the investigation is ongoing, but the consequences could be very severe.”

One has to wonder if Porter actually did play up or down to the bets placed on his performances, but should it turn out that he did, it could be a wrap for the man’s young NBA career. That being said, it felt like it was only a matter of time before a professional player got caught up in such a scandal. Adam Silver is not going to hesitate to make a prime example of someone who isn’t exactly the cornerstone of an NBA franchise.

More from ESPN:

“At the end of the day, there’s nothing more important than the integrity of the competition,” Silver said. “And so, any issue raised around that is of great concern to me and to all commissioners, to all people who are safeguards, who are all people who are in a position and have a responsibility to safeguard the game. Again, this is a burgeoning industry in the United States. It’s been legal in other places in the world for decades. There’s lessons to be learned from the way that sports betting is monitored and regulated in other jurisdictions.

Should be interesting to see how this one ends up playing out. You can bet it’ll be ugly if Silver’s biggest fear is confirmed.

What do y’all think? Should Jontay Porter be permanently banned if he’s found to have committed the “cardinal sin” in sports? Let us know in the comments section below.

Chart Rewind: Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’ Hits No. 1 on the Hot 100 In 2009 | Billboard News

Today’s episode of Billboard‘s Chart Rewind looks back at when Lady Gaga, TLC and Elton John hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Pokerface,” “No Scrubs” and “Bennie and the Jets.”

Tetris Kelly:
This week on Chart Rewind, we have three very different No. 1 hits to celebrate from three very different artists. Let’s start 50 years ago, heading all the way back to 1974 when Elton John put out his sensational hit “Benny and the Jets,” which hit No. 1 on April 13, 1974. At the time, it was his second No. 1 after “Crocodile Rock.”

Next we leap forward 25 years to April 10, 1999. TLC had the third No. 1 Hot 100 here with “No Scrubs.” It stayed there for four weeks.

And finally, Lady Gaga in 2009. Her second Hot 100 No.1 was “Poker Face.” It made it to the top on April 11, 2009, just a few months after her first Hot 100 hit “Just Dance.”

Tyler Hubbard Calls His Sophomore Solo Album ‘Strong’ ‘Live-Driven and Fan-Inspired’

With his second solo album, Strong, set to release April 12 via EMI Nashville, Tyler Hubbard says he feels “a little more established, found a little bit more of a rhythm. Until last year, I didn’t know who my fanbase really was, but I got to know them, being on the road so much last year. I know who my fanbase is, so this feels like the first project that I’ve written with my fans in mind.”

Within little more than a decade’s span, as part of his former duo Florida Georgia Line (alongside Brian Kelley), Hubbard sent 16 songs to the pinnacle of Billboard’s Country Airplay chart and earned two massive, top 5 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, with “Meant to Be” and “Cruise.” Both of those songs reached even loftier heights, joining an elite group of compositions that have earned RIAA Diamond status. The duo also saw four albums peak at No. 1 on the top country albums chart.

Hubbard’s 2023 self-titled project represented the singer-songwriter forging a transition from duo member to sharing his own perspective and sound as a solo artist. With that project, Hubbard added to his arsenal of hits, notching a Country Airplay chart-topper with the light-hearted, love-filled and RIAA Platinum-certified “5 Foot 9,” and a No. 2 hit on the same chart with “Dancin’ in the Country,” which was certified 2x Platinum.

“The first solo album was more introducing me to the world, but this is a bit deeper, more fun, more live-driven and fan-inspired, for sure,” he says. To be sure, the new album features more songs of love and good times, but meshed with songs that delve deeper into themes drawn from various moments on his life journey, drawing on themes of nostalgia and family.

He’s previewed his upcoming project with “Turn” and “Wish You Would,” as well as his nostalgic radio single “Back Then Right Now,” which currently resides at No. 7 on Country Airplay. Elsewhere, “Take Me Back” offers a nuanced look at his relationship with his hometown of Monroe, Georgia.

“I’m sure a lot of people have the same kind of story where they grew up, moved away and maybe didn’t come back as much as they would have liked, or left home indefinitely,” he says. “That’s sort of what I did. I’m proud of where I came from, but also don’t have a whole lot of reasons, other than a few friends and my brother, that are still there to really go back to. I haven’t spent a lot of time there and it was cool to try to channel that for a song concept. We write so many songs in country music about being proud of where we come from, as if we still live there, when some of us love our hometowns, but don’t live there. So this is the truth of the dynamic between me and where I came from.”

“’73 Beetle,” a solo write from Hubbard, was inspired by a 1973 Volkswagen Beetle that Hubbard and his father had worked on when Hubbard was a teenager. Hubbard says writing the song was “a nostalgic, therapeutic experience,” but hadn’t planned on releasing it, until he realized “’73 Beetle” served as a complement to “Miss My Daddy,” a song he’d written about his late father that appeared on his previous album.

“This lets fans more under the hood on that relationship and the stories and memories that I have with him through that car. It’s from a vulnerable and real place and it’s great to be able to go there as a solo artist and channel that a bit,” he says.

Hubbard still has that ’73 Beetle, with plans to finish restoring it someday.

“It’s in the shop and still needs to be completed. It’s a keepsake and reminds me of my dad. We took the ’73 Beetle and completely rebuilt it, every aspect of it, so it’s super custom. We just wanted to build something kind of crazy. We went to a lot of car shows back in the day — the VW car shows, specifically — and we wanted to build something that had never been done. That’s hopefully what this car will be when it’s finished.”

He collaborated with The Cadillac Three member and songwriter Jaren Johnston on writing “American Mellencamp,” one of a few songs that Hubbard wrote at Ryan Tedder’s writing space in Los Angeles.

“This has Jaren’s fingerprints all over it. You can almost hear Jaren singing on it, for sure. I’m a big fan of Jaren and The Cadillac Three and he’s an amazing writer. We wrote this thinking about the live show and wanting something that rocks, was fun and checked all those boxes. When I’m out in L.A. working, I usually hit Ryan up and he has a house fully dedicated to writing and studio space, so I’ll usually borrow his pool house, which is a small writing place and just have time to be creative and get inspired.”

For the new album, the Borman Entertainment-managed Hubbard reunited with co-producer Jordan Schmidt, whom he worked with on his previous outing, and again worked with many co-writers from his self-titled album, such as Andy Albert, Chris LaCorte, and Corey Crowder.

Several songs on the new album, including “Wish You Would” and “Vegas,” were written over the past year or so, while Hubbard was on the road over the past year, which included opening shows for Keith Urban (this year, Hubbard has been opening concerts on Kane Brown’s Into the Air tour).

“I don’t really write for projects. I just write all the time and then when it’s time to make an album, I look at what I have and figure out what fits best,” he says, noting that album track “A Lot With a Little” was considered for his self-titled album. “I wrote a lot before my first album came out and I thought about putting this song on that, but at some point I had to call that album a completed project. When I started looking at songs for this album, that was the first one I decided to put on this.”

Hubbard’s ascent into solo stardom comes at a time when country music is experiencing sweeping popularity among music’s greater scope, with major pop stars like Beyoncé and Post Malone making forays into country music. Hubbard sees one of the key benefits of the influx of pop artists is deeper involvement in Nashville’s songwriting circles.

“I feel like the genre’s in a cool season right now,” he says. “People from pop and everywhere else are wanting to be part of the genre and come to Nashville, which I think is cool. You see some artists coming to Nashville and really diving into the songwriting part of what we do, which I think fundamentally sets us apart. That’s one of my favorite parts of our community.”

Hubbard, of course, has been involved in Nashville’s songwriting and publishing community since the beginning of his career, as a writer not only nearly all of the songs he’s recorded as a solo artist and as part of FGL, but also hits recorded by Jason Aldean (“You Make It Easy”), Little Big Town (“Hell Yeah”), and Cole Swindell (“Hope You Get Lonely Tonight”). Having previously launched the publishing company Tree Vibez during his time as part of FGL, Hubbard has continued championing songwriters via the launch of his own publishing company HAYLO Music, led by general manager Josh Saxe.

“I wanted to create a culture that supports songwriters and that can be a creative space for songwriters to thrive and collaborate,” he says. “I really fell in love with publishing over the past eight years or so, watching Tree Vibez do what it did and grow the way it did. I wanted to build another infrastructure around songwriters.”

While that inclination for collaboration rules the writing rooms, fans won’t find a plethora of vocal collabs filling this new album, as Hubbard further cements his status as a solo artist apart from his work with his former FGL co-hort Kelley. “I’m wishing him the best and am excited for both of us,” he says of his former bandmate. “I’m excited to be where I’m at and doing what I’m doing. I’m feeling a lot of creative energy and I’m having fun with it.”

Strong culminates with its title track, a song he wrote with Matt Dragstrem and Josh Miller, in which Hubbard compares a solid romantic relationship to all manner of things that have demonstrated their heartiness and endurance over the years, from steel-toed work boots to hundred-year-old oak trees and calloused hands shaped by years of work.

“I love what the song stands for,” Hubbard says, who notes the song is a reflection of the strength of his marriage to his wife Hayley, whom he wed in 2015. “But ‘Strong’ is a word that has a lot of depth, a lot of dynamic. It means something different for everyone — it can mean spiritually strong, mentally strong, physically strong. We kept referring to a lot of the processes on this album being strong, whether it was a mix or a take or a photo shoot or any of the things that happened along the way. And so when it came time to name the album, ‘Strong’ really kind of fundamentally encompasses it all.”
