The Tanu Muino-directed music video accompanying the track features Lipa alongside dancers, high divers, and synchronized swimmers at the Piscina Municipal de Montjuïc in Barcelona, Spain, which was also the location for Kylie Minogue’s iconic “Slow” video.

“‘Illusion’ was the first song Caroline [Ailin], Danny [Harle], Tobias [Jesso Jr.], Kevin [Parker] and I worked on together, and it really broke the ice for the record,” the 28-year-old singer shared in a press statement. “It’s about knowing what you’re getting yourself into, but staying for the hell of it. The joke’s on them, it’s the fun of playing someone at their own game because ultimately you won’t fall for an illusion.”

Trending on Billboard

“Illusion” is the third single the British artist has dropped ahead of her upcoming third studio album Radical Optimism, following “Houdini” and “Training Season.” The former debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the latter entered the chart at No. 27.

“[Releasing the album] feels good. It feels for lack of a better word — radically optimistic,” Lipa previously told Billboard of her upcoming project, before explaining the idea behind the album cover, which features the singer floating in a wide open ocean facing a shark fin. “Throughout the whole record, there’s this idea of chaos happening around and me trying to push through it in a way that feels authentic and honest to me.”

As to how she got the name of the album, Lipa attributed the phrase to a friend “A couple years ago, a friend introduced me to the term ‘radical optimism,’” she said in a statement announcing Radical Optimism back in March. “It’s a concept that resonated with me, and I became more curious as I started to play with it and weave it into my life.”

The 11-track Radical Optimism — Lipa’s first proper LP since 2020’s Future Nostalgia — arrives May 3.

Ariana Grande Shares Selfies With ‘Wicked’ Co-Stars Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Yeoh & Ethan Slater: ‘My Loves’

Ariana Grande is dancing through life as she begins the promotional cycle for Wicked.

Two months after the project’s first trailer premiered during the 2024 Super Bowl in February, the pop star and her castmates debuted an exclusive first look at the live-action duology at this year’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Wednesday — after which she shared a handful of sweet photos with Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh and more on Instagram.

Kicking off her post with a pair of glamour shots, Grande elegantly models her Glinda-esque Oscar De La Renta dress — layered with pieces of pink fabric made to look like flower petals — in two photos from the event. The following snaps find the “Yes, And?” singer making kissy faces with Erivo, Bailey and Yeoh, as well as boyfriend Ethan Slater (who also co-stars in Wicked) and Jeff Goldblum. In one group shot, the whole Ozian gang poses for a mirror selfie at a makeup station backstage.

Grande also shared a video of her and Erivo introducing footage from Wicked onstage at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace during Universal Pictures’ Focus Features Presentation, speaking in front of a large crowd of fans armed with light-up wands. “When I was 10 years old, I saw Wicked on Broadway for the first time,” she says in the clip, earning laughs after following up with a joke: “It was only five years ago.”

Trending on Billboard

She and Erivo then joined hands and walked offstage, a photo of which the R.E.M. Beauty founder included in her post. “i am so incredibly giddy and lucky to be your sister,” Grande wrote of Erivo, also sharing the picture on her Story. “i cannot wait for every step of the way with you.”

Resharing another picture of her and Erivo with Bailey, Grande wrote, “my loves.”

The Grammy winner’s post follows a similar one from Goldblum, who posted a different angle of the group’s makeup mirror selfie and wrote, “Over the rainbow to be reunited with this magical family!”

Grande commented, “my heart !!!!!!!!!”

A separate fan video from the convention showed the singer and Slater holding hands as they walked through the venue, the SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical actor matching Grande in a pink shirt. The pair started dating while shooting Wicked in the U.K. last year, with Slater playing Boq, a munchkin boy who, ironically, has a crush on Grande’s Glinda.

The first of Jon M. Chu’s two-part film adaptations of the famed Stephen Schwartz musical — which itself was based on Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel Wicked — arrives this Thanksgiving, with the second installment set to arrive a year later. In the meantime, Grande has been promoting her latest album Eternal Sunshine, which dropped March 8 and spent an immediate two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

And while Grande has seemingly shifted gears back to Wicked, the vocalist recently assured fans that the Eternal Sunshine era is far from over. “i cannot wait for everything that has yet to come within this eternal sunshine cycle (that has only just begun & may it never end),” she captioned a TikTok video of her recording vocals in the studio earlier this week. “thank you for your love.”

Watch Baby Tate Give Props to Her Idols in Incredible New ‘On the Radar’ Freestyle

The past decade has seen an explosion in the number of YouTube channels showcasing rappers flexing on the mic. NYC-based On the Radar Radio has emerged as one of the most popular of the bunch.

Hosted by Power 105.1 on-air personality Gabe P, On the Radar has made a name for itself by consistently delivering memorable moments from some of the hottest up-and-coming rappers in the game. The channel has become so popular that it’s even attracted established acts like Meek Mill and Drake, the latter of whom accompanied the newly minted UK star Central Cee.

The latest MC to absolutely torch the On the Radar mic is Decatur, Ga.’s own Baby Tate. Rapping over the “Let’s Get Blown” beat, which the Neptunes produced for Snoop Dogg back in 2004 for his R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece album, Tate returns for her second freestyle and sends a few shots at her doubters, rapping, “They say I blink like Nicki, dress like Kimmy, get real freaky on a track like Missy, cocky like Rih Rih, rough like E-V-E, but I don’t understand why n—as won’t let me be me.”

Trending on Billboard

Elsewhere, Tate gives props to some of her major inspirations, which include her mother, singer Dionne Farris, as well as Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, Eve, Kelis, Lauryn Hill and more, but laments the fact that because she’s a Black woman, “They don’t see Kendrick in me, they don’t hear the Ye, and they don’t see the P.”

But don’t just read the lyrics; go watch it. She goes in for the entire two minutes and 10 seconds that she’s onscreen.

Tate’s been killing it since she dropped her 2016 Toni Basil-interpolating “Hey Mickey!,” which became a viral smash seven years later thanks to TikTok. Most recently, TikTok gave her another assist when her 2022 collaboration with JID and 21 Savage, “Surround Sound,” powered what became known as the “ceiling challenge,” which saw fans placing their phones on the ceiling to get a bird’s-eye view as they danced to the song. The track, which peaked at No. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100, was propelled to No. 1 on Billboard‘s Rhythmic Airplay chart last month.

What’s the Secret to Selling to Superfans? Ask the Grateful Dead — Or a K-Pop Act

For the past decade, on-demand streaming drove incredible gains in recorded music revenue, which climbed from $6.7 billion in 2014 to $17.1 billion last year in the U.S. alone. Now there’s only so much room for growth in the U.S. and Europe, and developing markets aren’t as predictable. But look, up in the sky, it’s a nerd, who could help an artist buy a plane, it’s SUPERFANS!

Basically, now that the music business takes in a modest amount of money from an enormous number of people, it needs to find ways to also capture much larger amounts of money from smaller numbers of more dedicated fans. A July 2023 Goldman Sachs report said there was a $4.2 billion “addressable market opportunity for superfan monetization,” and Billboard just reported on how this same excitement is sweeping labels — as well as some of the challenges they will face. Of course, this is just an MBA’s way of saying what most fans already know: They want to buy more from their favorite acts than access to their music on a streaming service. The question — besides who actually qualifies as a superfan! — is how to find them and what they want.

To get sense of what this business might look like, let’s look at the iconic group that pioneered one kind of superfan model, as well as newer stars that have turned a very different model into something of a science: the Grateful Dead and K-pop groups. Both are very popular — phenomenally so by some measures — but neither is exactly mainstream in the way that Taylor Swift or Beyoncé is. Their popularity is deeper than it is wide. Neither the Dead nor K-pop is for everyone — both tend to inspire either devotion or disdain — but the fans who like them tend to go all-in.

Trending on Billboard

Those fans help these acts overperform by different measures. The Dead only ever had one hit single, but the band had the highest-grossing tours in 1991 and 1993, partly thanks to hardcore Deadheads who saw multiple shows, and the 2023 Dead & Company tour grossed as much ($114.7 million) as the last BTS tour ($113.6 million), according to Billboard Boxscore. K-pop acts dominate the sales market. In 2023, K-pop acts had seven of the top-selling CDs in the U.S., three of the top-selling albums, and none of the top albums by total consumption, once streaming was included. On a relative basis compared to other acts, their fans buy more than they listen — a great business considering that many of those buyers probably listen to those albums on streaming services as well. (K-pop is far more popular internationally.)

Both the Dead and the K-pop groups essentially doubled-down on what they do well in order to super-serve their fans. The Dead built its reputation as an improvisational live act, the best in popular music, and it never completely captured that same magic in the studio. So after the group broke up in 1995, it started to release more live recordings, and a 2006 deal with Rhino led to increasingly-ambitious reissue projects — a 73-CD set of the 1972 European tour, a series of reissues available every quarter on a subscription-first basis, and an 80-CD set of one show from each year of the band’s 30-year career. Recently the group broke a record for having the most albums on the top 40 spots in the Billboard 200. This undercounts their business success, though, since some of the box sets Rhino releases sell for more than $100.

K-pop acts tend to focus on selling merchandise, and given the declining number of CD players, many young fans probably see CDs as more of a souvenir than a way to listen to music. K-pop is all about fandom — having it, displaying it, and in some cases arguing about it — so those acts tend to sell merchandise that appeals to a collector’s mentality. (I find it odd that some fans buy CDs in different colors, but I probably have a dozen live versions of the Grateful Dead’s “Dark Star,” and some people find that a bit much, too.) K-pop fans spend a considerable amount of money on merchandise — $24 a month, according to research from Luminate, which is 140% more than the average U.S. listener. From a financial perspective, K-pop acts are basically in the tchotchke business; BTS sells clothes, jewelry and even Uno cards. And while the Dead sells more than its share of merchandise, including “drinkware” and “home goods,” it has always really been a live band, in both art and business terms.

The music industry tends to see these business models as exceptions, since it’s dominated by labels that are very much in the recorded music business. But they might also offer inspiration on how to turn a star-level audience into a superstar-level career. (The Dead’s business, which is still overseen by Warner Music’s Rhino, also shows that many superfans don’t fade away — I saw a few concerts in 1991, and I plan to buy the next vinyl box set, too.) Charts change much faster than loyalties.

What can the rest of the business learn from these successes? Most important, that it’s both possible and potentially difficult to monetize superfans — they’re willing to spend money, but only on the right items; BTS live recordings might not do as well as an expanded clothing line. And that requires expertise. Rhino president Mark Pinkus works closely with the Dead, as does archivist Dave Lemieux. They choose the shows fans want to hear and know which to sell as part of the Dave’s Picks reissue series and which belong in box sets. K-pop fans are enthusiastic, but also demanding — they want to buy branded hoodies, but only if they’re designed the right way.

Selling streaming subscriptions to a mass audience requires executives who could focus on the mainstream. Getting part of that audience to spend twice that much money on a single act is certainly possible — but it takes a different skill entirely.

Keith Urban Shares 5 Things You Didn’t Know About New Song ‘Straight Line’ | Billboard

Country star Keith Urban shares 5 things you didn’t know about his new song “Straight Line.”

Keith Urban
Hey, Billboard, it’s Keith Urban here. These are five things you didn’t know about my new song “Straight Line.”

Keith Urban
This song was originally recorded with just drum machine and no real drums and we finished out the whole song. And for whatever reason, we just felt like it was linear and not going anywhere. And so we decided to put real drums on it. And when we did, it changed the whole thing in a big way. So shout-out to all the real drummers out there. When we started writing, the song was written in a stream of consciousness. … We had a groove and we kept singing, “Late night lover, late night lover.” And when one of the other writers was singing it, I thought he was saying straight line lover, and I thought that was more interesting. And then we were wondering what “straight line lover” meant and so we just trimmed it down to “Straight Line.”

Keith Urban
I wrote this song with my bass player, Jerry Flowers, the guy called Chase McGill. And a great producer/ songwriter called Greg Wells, a great musician, the four of us had never written together. We had two days to write. And the very first day we wrote a song and the very second day we wrote “Straight Line.” Both of the songs we wrote will be on this album.

Aoki Lee Simmons PDA-Filled Relationship With 65-Year-Old Vittorio Assaf Is “100% Done”

HipHopWired Featured Video

GQ Men of the Year Party 2023 - Arrivals

Source: Phillip Faraone / Getty

Earlier this month, the gag reflexes of millions of people on social media were tested when Aoki Lee Simmons, the 21-year-old daughter of Russell and Kimora Lee Simmons, was spotted spotted at the beach on the island of St. Barts sucking face with 65-year-old popular Italian restaurant founder Vittorio Assaf, whom Aoki was apparently dating, which her father reportedly approved of, which isn’t surprising considering the sex scandals Russell Simmons has been drowning in himself.

Well, now, it appears that whatever cirngey, cradle-robbing situationship Aoki and Assaf had going on is already “100% done”—or maybe not.

From Page Six:

It turns out the model’s PDA-filled getaway with the 65-year-old restaurateur was just a fling.

“It’s 100% done. They’re absolutely not dating,” a source close to Aoki told Page Six.

Then again, Simmons referred to Assaf as her “boyfriend” multiple times during the Instagram Live videos she posted from their romantic St. Barts vacation.

In one clip, the 21-year-old even revealed he’s the “second boyfriend” she’s ever had while taking her followers on a tour of his St. Barts property.

Whether the relationship (or whatever it is/was) between Aoki and the man who is 44 years her senior is truly over or not, can we all agree on one thing? That sh*t is gross.
I mean, the age gap alone is more than twice the number of years Aoki has been alive for. This young woman is only a few years past the age of consent in most states in the U.S., and she’s dating a guy who has been eligible for senior discounts at Wendy’s for like a decade. That doesn’t strike y’all as disgusting and predatory?

While Russell didn’t appear to have a problem with his daughter publicly trading kisses with a man who is old enough to be her grandfather, Kimora Lee was reportedly furious about it. Hopefully, it’s true that Aoki and her geriatric boo-thang have really called it quits and put her poor mother’s mind at ease.
