HYBE Sells $50 Million in SM Entertainment Stock

K-pop giant HYBE sold a portion of its stake in rival South Korean music group SM Entertainment worth $50 million, or roughly 3% of the company, according to a filing made public on Tuesday (May 28).

Though it sold roughly 755,500 shares worth 68.4 billion Korean won, HYBE still owns some 2.2 million shares comprising a 9.4% stake SM Entertainment, the company behind such acts as aespa and NCT 127.

The musical home to supergroup BTS, HYBE’s actions related to SM have been closely scrutinized ever since it acquired a nearly 16% stake in SM in a failed takeover attempt last year.

Trending on Billboard

In March this year, HYBE purchased an additional 868,948 shares of SM for approximately 104.3 billion won ($78 million). This was the final tranche of shares SM founder Lee Soo-man had pledged to sell to HYBE after it acquired from him the majority of his 15.8% stake in February 2023, according to a Feb. 28 regulatory filing.

HYBE’s purchase of Lee Soo-man’s shares briefly created a power struggle in South Korea’s K-pop industry. But ultimately, Kakao Corp.’s subsidiary Kakao Entertainment acquired nearly 40% of SM’s stock to control the company, a deal which received formal approval from the Korean Fair Trade Commission earlier this month.

Since losing out to Kakao, HYBE’s stock has fallen by more than 28% over the past 12 months. For the first quarter of this year, HYBE posted its lowest total revenue in two years — revenue of 360.9 billion won ($271.5 million), down 12.1% year over year and the lowest since posting 285 billion won ($214.4 million) in the first quarter of 2022. Operating profit fell precipitously to 14.4 billion won ($10.8 million), down 72.6% from the prior-year period.

Here’s a Timeline of Rita Ora & Taika Waititi’s Relationship

From romance rumors and viral photos to a secret wedding and red carpet appearances, here’s a full timeline of Ora and Waititi’s relationship.

Over the years, Rita Ora and Taika Waititi have proven to be the ultimate creative power couple.

The Thor: Love and Thunder director and the “Praising You” singer tied the knot on Aug. 4, 2022, after striking up a romance the year prior. However, it wasn’t until 2023 that Ora officially confirmed that she and the 47-year-old filmmaker had secretly gotten married. “Yes. I am officially off the market, people,” she reportedly said in a radio interview in January. “I chose to keep it more private and keep it to myself… It was exactly, exactly how I wanted. It is nice to keep some things just to myself sometimes. It was nice and sweet. Sorry it’s not that interesting. One day I will throw a big party.”

Most recently, the duo walked the carpet together at the 2024 Met Gala, with Ora channeling the Garden of Time theme with a colorful string gown by Marni. Waititi, meanwhile, rocked a full brown leather look by the same designer.

To celebrate their whirlwind love journey, we’ve compiled a full timeline of Rita Ora and Taika Waititi’s relationship. Check it out below.

Billie Eilish Makes the Case for Shorter Albums & Shorter Shows

Billie Eilish wants to keep things short and sweet.

On May 17, Eilish released her third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, with a brisk 10 tracks. Then over the holiday weekend, some statements she made via the Stationhead app went viral about the increasing run-time of some high-profile concerts.

“I’m not doing a three-hour show,” Eilish says in fan recordings of the comments. “That’s literally psychotic. Nobody wants that. You guys don’t want that. I don’t want that. I don’t even want that as a fan. My favorite artist in the world, I’m not trying to hear them for three hours. That’s far too long.”

On the new Billboard Pop Shop Podcast, Katie & Keith are talking about Eilish’s perspective — weighing what is possible and healthy for an artist versus what a fan wants from a concert. Listen to the full conversation below:

Also on the show, we’ve got chart news on how Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department and Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft team up for a big week, as the two albums both exceeded 300,000 equivalent album units each in the same week — the first time that’s happened in eight years. While Swift is steady at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Eilish debuts at No. 2 with a career best in terms of units earned. Plus, all 10 of the new album’s songs debut on the Billboard Hot 100, including a top five arrival for “Lunch.”

TREASURE Roars Back With Monstrous New Single ‘KING KONG’: Watch

TREASURE is stomping back with “KING KONG,” the K-pop boy band’s first new single of the year that mixes their immense energy with a cinematic flair — much like the iconic beast himself. Opening with bold, thumping guitars before the group’s signature “TREASURE” whisper from Choi Hyun Suk, the song quickly points to a thrilling journey ahead.

With a fervently catchy pop chorus declaring “My heart is like King Kong” and an impressive rap section that highlights rappers Hyun Suk, Yoshi and Haruto (the former two who both co-wrote and co-composed the track), the latest TREASURE single is a burst of high-energy K-pop maximalism. The song culminates in an intense industrial breakdown before launching into an all-group chant outro, a sonic signature for the group. Jihoon’s ad-libs scattered throughout the outro only add to the dynamic closing.

Meanwhile, the accompanying music video draws heavily on monster, action and sci-fi movie themes a la King Kong. With sets like a futuristic lab, a police car chase in the city, and a thundering apocalyptic wasteland, the “KING KONG” video features choreography mimicking the iconic beast and moments where all 10 members peer at viewers with eerie, glowing eyes but also more subtle nods to Hollywood anti-heroes like in Hyun Suk’s green ponytail, reminiscent of a Godzilla-like tail, as a playful nod to another iconic beast.

Produced by Airplay, known for R&B and pop–inspired works with K-pop heavyweights like Taeyang, LeeHi, WINNER, iKON, and IZ*ONE, “KING KONG” blends elements of TREASURE’s pumped-up performance-ready sound with an industrial and cinematic edge. The single is the group’s latest release since signing with Columbia Records in October and next big move since launching a clothing collaboration with Uniqlo last week.

Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson Boxing Match Arlington Press Conference

Mike Tyson suffered a health scare while in midair and is now recovering despite having a major boxing event coming in the next few weeks. The former heavyweight world champion suffered an ulcer flare-up and appears to be expected to go forward with his bout with social media star Jake Paul.

As seen on Deadline, Mike Tyson, 57, was on an American Airlines flight from Miami to Los Angeles when the flare-up occurred. As the outlet reports, flight attendants rushed to the boxing legend’s aid and requested the assistance of a doctor on board.

More from Deadline:

“He became nauseous and dizzy due to an ulcer flare up 30 minutes before landing, a rep for Tyron said in a statement to media outlets. “He is appreciative to the medical staff that were there to help him” and is now feeling “great”, the rep added.

Flight attendants reached out to passengers to see if a doctor was on board when Tyson revealed he was in intense pain. Paramedics reportedly boarded the plane when it landed to assist Tyson.

Tyson is set to take on Paul, 27, in Arlington, Texas at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium on July 20. Paul has said in interviews that while he respects Tyson, he isn’t going to pull any punches. Tyson promises that the fight isn’t a money grab and that he intends to bring the fight to Paul.

Vado ft. Benny The Butcher “Gotta Wait,” Quavo “Clear The Smoke” & More | Daily Visuals 5.28.24

HipHopWired Featured Video

Seems like someone lit a fire under Vado’s ass as the Harlem rapper has been on his grizzly as of late and for his latest cut the Violence And Drugs Only artist links up with a Buffalo bars-smith to kick that gutter ish that the two are known for dropping.

For his new visuals to “Gotta Wait,” Vado connects with Benny The Butcher at a Chinese takeout spot where they count stacks of cash but don’t seem to place an order at any point. The restaurant workers must’ve felt crazy teased thinking they were about to buy out the kitchen.

Quavo meanwhile doesn’t seem to mind a little smoke and in his clip for “Clear The Smoke” the ATLien uses a smoke machine to fill the room with some carbon while some thick women walk around half-naked for no apparent reason. Yeah, we can’t call that one.

Check out the rest of today’s drops and some joints you might’ve missed over the weekend including work from Vado (we told y’all he was grinding), Juicy J, and more.

Sean Kingston Allegedly Defrauded $480,000 From Jeweler, Faces 10 Charges in Florida

Singer/songwriter Sean Kingston is facing 10 charges in Broward County, Florida after being arrested for fraud and theft in California last Thursday (May 23).

Kingston’s arrest happened the same day Broward County Sheriff’s deputies and Davie Police SWAT members raided his home in Miami and took his mother, Janice Turner, who also faces fraud and theft charges, into custody. Both Turner and Kingston, born Kisean Paul Anderson, are named in the arrest warrant that was issued on May 20 for a slew of charges including defrauding a jeweler, grand theft from a luxury car dealer, identity fraud, issuing faulty checks, and a probation violation.

Kingston is being detained in a San Bernardino county jail without bail. The singer is due in court on Tuesday for an extradition hearing where he’s expected to be sent back to Florida. His attorney, Robert Rosenblatt, told NBC News:

Trending on Billboard

“We were in the process of having him return to Florida after his show. We want him back asap so we can show this is merely a civil case and not criminal. We look forward to challenging this case in court.”

All this stems from a lawsuit reportedly filed by attorney Dennis Card. Card’s suit alleges that Kingston has a routine when it comes to not paying for things. “My client has a $150,000 television sound system that’s in there, there’s also about $1 million worth of watches that are in there, there’s a $80,000 custom bed that was ordered. This is an organized systematic fraud,” Card told NBC Miami. Adding, “He’s got basically a script. He says that he works with Justin Bieber, and that he obviously puts on a big show here, this is a rental house, he doesn’t own it, and he lures people using his celebrity into having them release things without him paying for it and then he simply never pays.”

We’ll have more info as this story develops.
