How Taylor Swift Has Stayed Atop the Charts With ‘The Tortured Poets Department’

In early June, when Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department was enjoying its seventh week atop the Billboard 200, her friend and collaborator Lana Del Rey offered a simple explanation of Swift’s stardom to BBC News. “She’s told me so many times that she wants it more than anyone,” Del Rey said. “And how amazing — she’s getting exactly what she wants.”

This week, Swift secured her eighth consecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, tying Folklore and coming behind only 1989 and Fearless (11 weeks each) for the most weeks at No. 1 of any of her 14 career chart-toppers. TTPD is also the first album in a year, since Morgan Wallen’s One Thing At a Time, to have spent at least two months atop the list and is the first album by a woman to spend its first eight weeks at No. 1 since Whitney Houston‘s Whitney spent its first 11 weeks at the top in 1987. It also extends Swift’s record of weeks spent at the apex of the Billboard 200 to 77 — 10 weeks more than the artist with the second-most, Elvis Presley (67).

While Swift is adept at rolling out record-breaking albums, what’s different this time is not how she has done it but for how long — and when. While she — and most artists across genres — often boosts first-week sales with multiple vinyl variants, signed CD copies and deluxe digital exclusives, Swift has expanded on that rollout plan well beyond the initial release of The Tortured Poets Department.

It’s a strategy that’s relatively novel. Then again, rarely does an artist have such a massive and faithful fan base ready and willing to activate as needed. And while Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour and initial deluxe release, The Anthology — which arrived mere hours after the 16-track original, and which has continued to stream well — have surely helped sustain TTPD, the strategic drops of bonus versions available for a limited time, from acoustic renditions to first-draft phone memos, have kept her physical and digital sales high.

In its first tracking week, TTPD raked in 1.914 million total album sales in the United States (physical configurations and digital downloads), according to Luminate. That figure alone translates to an estimated $38.3 million — without taking into account the 891.37 million on-demand official streams, which accounted for an additional 683,000 streaming equivalent album units. The album continued to stream well for its next three weeks, even as sales naturally died down — until its fifth week, when Swift supercharged the album by releasing six digital album bonuses and one new CD variant on her webstore, including first draft phone memo versions, “Live From Paris” recordings and an acoustic version of “But Daddy I Love Him,” all available for a limited time in the United States. Plus, a variety of five CD offerings — either signed or a deluxe version — had shipped after being replenished. Fans were quick to snatch the new versions up, generating an estimated $2.4 million in sales revenue — a huge bump from the prior week’s total of nearly $801,000, and helping keep the album at No. 1.

That same week, Billie Eilish released her third album, Hit Me Hard and Soft. It arrived with a handful of physical offerings including nine vinyl variants and four CD editions, plus three deluxe digital editions: a standard digital album with 10 bonus isolated vocal tracks of the album’s 10 songs, a version with 10 bonus sped-up versions and a version with 10 bonus “slowed and reverb” versions. Hit Me ultimately debuted at No. 2 but scored Eilish the best first-week number of her career with 339,000 units.

The competition resulted in a major coup for both artists: For the first time in eight years, two albums had earned over 300,000 equivalent album units in a single week in the United States, according to Luminate. (Drake’s Views and Beyoncé’s Lemonade both cleared 300,000 units in one week on the chart dated May 21, 2016).

Swift continued her extended rollout strategy this past week as her Eras Tour hit the United Kingdom. In TTPD’s eighth week of availability, she made her “Live From Paris” bonus tracks and first draft phone memos available once more for a limited time, gated to the U.K. market, which once again led to a weekly sales spike — and helped keep TTPD atop the charts in that country.

Swift’s dominance has certainly been felt by her peers, who themselves released deluxe editions and additional versions of their albums in their respective first weeks of availability, hoping to boost their own first-week numbers. Fans of those artists felt it, too; Billie Eilish fans, for example, noted that Swift’s fifth week — when she released the first batch of additional versions — coincided with the release of Eilish’s Hit Me Hard And Soft. And Charli XCX fans, hoping to see the pop star get her first U.K. No. 1 album with Brat this past week, expressed frustration that Swift happened to release the second wave of additional releases the week Charli’s album hit the market. (In the United States, Brat debuted on the Billboard 200 at No. 3, earning Charli the highest debut of her career.) As one user wrote on X: “I didn’t wanna believe it but… Taylor could actually be chart obsessed…”.

Some industry sources across sectors of the business feel similarly, lamenting to Billboard that Swift’s flood of releases is not just feeding superfans, but boxing others out of the spotlight — and the type of acclaim and prestige that a No. 1 album can provide. Charli hinted at the online chatter when she said to a sold-out crowd at Los Angeles venue The Shrine on May 15: “I just feel like artistry shines through, you know what I’m saying? I’m really appreciative of the people who have been there from the jump and understood my vision… What’s the next song? Oh, it’s ‘Sympathy Is a Knife.’ Interesting.”

After the fact, fans pointed to the themes of Brat — particularly a song like “Rewind,” on which Charli questions her relationship to fame and her own artistry, even calling out the Billboard charts by name. One fan wrote on X: “There is of course an irony that an album full of meditations on the push-pull relationship of the artist and their art to success was beaten to the #1 spot by an artist peddling the 304th edition of their album for another week atop the charts…”. Yet, as Clint Robinson, on-air talent for Audacy Orlando, said in a TikTok clip, “The problem is, Taylor Swift has amassed a literal army of fans that buy her variations, that want to stream her albums, that want to see her be No. 1. They care about that because she does too. And you want to know why? Because she is an incredible businesswoman.”

Given its success, Swift’s extended-rollout strategy could become a blueprint for others to follow to maintain momentum on the charts. Meanwhile, some industry insiders are wondering when it will end, with one industry source comparing the ongoing TTPD releases to fast fashion.

Ahead, fans are eyeing Sabrina Carpenter’s current chart reign as she occupies the Nos. 2 and 3 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Please Please Please” and “Espresso,” respectively. Carpenter — a close friend of Swift’s who opened for the star on a handful of Eras Tour dates — will release her new album, Short n’ Sweet, on August 23. Though the pair are openly supportive of one another, and despite Carpenter’s album being nearly two months away, her fans aren’t resting easy just yet. As one posted on X: “Taylor Swift got a mega deluxe acoustic version ready for her ass.”

How Can Vinyl Manufacturers Reduce Their Carbon Footprints? A New Report Offers 5 Tips

Vinyl sales were up 14.2% across all U.S. independent retailers in 2023, according to Luminate, marking the continued growth of a format whose renewed popularity has coincided with a growing industry focus on sustainability — one that has consistently identified vinyl’s carbon footprint as problematic.

Now, the Vinyl Record Manufacturer’s Association (VRMA) and the Vinyl Alliance (VA) have released a study that looks at the carbon footprint of the manufacturing process and offers recommendations on how to mitigate it.

“We hope this report — and a series of subsequent updates — encourages everyone in the vinyl record industry to be radically transparent about the environmental impact of making vinyl records, and what steps we can take to reduce that impact,” the report reads, adding that the data backing it up is “based on a very limited number of businesses in the supply chain.” However, it continues, “we have a range of other companies who are in the process of contributing their carbon footprints, and we hope this report will encourage many more businesses in the supply chain to participate as well.”

Trending on Billboard

The study considers the vinyl industry’s scope one, two and three emissions, which are involved in the entire lifespan of a vinyl record. Respectively, they encompass a company’s direct emissions; indirect emissions from electricity purchased; and all other indirect emissions in a company’s value chain. The study was made in accordance with Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, which standardizes, on an international level, how businesses measure, report and manage their greenhouse gas emissions.

According to the report, the “cradle-to-factory gate” footprint of a single vinyl album is approximately 1.15 kg CO2e, or the equivalent of driving a car for three miles. Fifty percent of those emissions come from the plastic PVC compound used to press the records, another 30% are from energy
consumption at the factory and 13% of emissions are from print packaging like jackets, inserts and sleeves. The remaining percentage includes the manufacturing of lacquers, cutting tools and stampers, and other packaging.

But while vinyl emissions are an oft-cited problem, the report goes a step further by offering five recommendations vinyl manufacturers can take to reduce carbon emissions from their production processes.

The first is to eliminate air freight. “If a label or artist presses at a single location, then ships records to global markets by air freight,” the study states, “these shipping emissions will dwarf anything else you might do to reduce the carbon footprint of your release.”

The next recommendation is to switch to “bio-attributed” PVC compound. A relatively recent invention, “bio-attributed” PVC is made from a waste product created during paper production and uses plant-based raw materials to replace the petroleum that PVC is typically made with. Such usage could cut an album’s carbon footprint by roughly 44%, according to the report.

The report also recommends that manufacturers press on lighter 140-gram, versus 180-gram, vinyl. Heavier weights can increase a record’s footprint by between 14% and 26%, as can the use of splatter vinyl, which entails sprinkling various colors onto a background color before the record is pressed. The report also advises manufacturers to keep their packaging simple, noting that a jacket gatefold on a single record adds 10% to 15% to the typical footprint of a record compared to a standard 3mm spine jacket.

Finally, the report advises all companies in the supply chain to transition to zero-carbon energy. “Pressing plants often have gas boilers, and replacing these with electric or hydrogen boilers represents a huge challenge,” the report states, “but one that has to be grasped.”

The inaugural report was compiled by a working group led by Peter Frings of Stamper Discs alongside Adam Teskey and Alex Deninson of Vinyl Factory Manufacturing Ltd; Ryan Weitzel of A to Z Media; Karen Emanuel and John Service of Key Production; Ian Stanton of Beggars Group; Kamal Nasseredine of Precision Pressing; Vladimir Visek of GZ Media; Ryan Mitrovitch of Vinyl Alliance; Bryan Ekus of VRMA; and Ruben Planting of Deep Grooves.

Post Malone Announces ‘F-1 Trillion’ Album & Release Date

Post Malone is set to release his upcoming album, F-1 Trillion, on Aug. 16, revealing the news via a billboard in Nashville on Tuesday (June 18).

The album marks his sixth studio album, following 2023’s Austin. Post Malone is currently riding high atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his Morgan Wallen collaboration “I Had Some Help,” which is spending its fifth week atop the chart.

Though Post Malone didn’t reveal a track list for the project, it is presumably a country-leaning album, and he has been making deep inroads into the country music genre of late, including teaming with Blake Shelton for the song “Pour Me a Drink.” He performed on the Academy of Country Music Awards in May, performing a song called “Never Love You Again,” that is presumably from the upcoming album. He also performed at the country music festival Stagecoach.

The news of the impending album release comes the day after Post Malone’s Monday night (June 17) performance at Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe, where he was joined by Lainey Wilson, Ernest, and multi-hit songwriter Ashley Gorley for an industry-only writers’ round at the famed songwriters venue.

During the in-the-round acoustic set, Post Malone offered up renditions of songs including “Circles,” “Sunflower” and “I Had Some Help,” and joined Wilson and Ernest on various songs, including teaming with Ernest for a set-closing rendition of George Jones’ “If Drinkin’ Don’t Kill Me (Her Memory Will).”

Post Malone’s breakout success came in 2015 with the song “White Iverson,” which reached No. 15 on the Hot 100. He earned his first Hot 100 chart-topper with “Rockstar” featuring 21 Savage, which dominated the chart for eight weeks. To date, Post Malone has had six songs reach the pinnacle of the Hot 100.

The Clipse Premiere New Song During Louis Vuitton Fashion Show in Paris

Pharrell unveiled his latest Spring/Summer 2025 Men’s Collection for Louis Vuitton earlier Tuesday (June 18) during Paris Fashion Week, and for the second year in a row, a new Clipse song made its debut.

Around the 40-minute mark, haunting piano keys started to play for about a two minutes before you can hear John Legend‘s voice as he sings, “The birds don’t sing.”

You then hear Pusha T rapping about his mother Mildred Thornton dying in November 2021, and the bars are heart-wrenching. “Lost in emotion, mama’s youngest/ Tryna navigate life without my compass/ Some experience death and feel numbness/ But not me, I felt it all and couldn’t function.”

Trending on Billboard

His brother No Malice handles the second verse and it focuses on their father Elliott Thornton Sr., who died in March 2022. “Your car was in the driveway, I knew that you were home/ By the third knock, a chill ran through my bones/ The way you miss mama, I guess I should’ve known/ Chivalry ain’t dead, you ain’t let her go alone,” he raps as he paints the picture of when he found his father’s body.

Last year, the duo premiered a new song as well, and it sent the rap community in a frenzy for its subliminal bars aimed at Jim Jones, who boldly claimed that Push isn’t a top 50 rapper of all time.

Billboard reached out to Pusha’s reps for more information, and while they weren’t willing to share any just yet, they did confirm that what we heard was a new Clipse record. “No details to share right now, other than that it is indeed new Clipse that played during the show,” they told us in a statement.

Keep it locked here as more information comes out this rumored project they supposedly got cooking up.

The single rallies 14-1 in its fifth week with 8.5 million audience impressions, up 71%, in the U.S. in the tracking week ending June 13, according to Luminate. KFLZ-FM San Antonio, Texas, leads all reporters to the chart, with over 430 plays of the song to date. Meanwhile, WOJO-FM Chicago had the most audience – 1.3 million – among chart reporters for the song in the tracking week.

Though “Sabor a Michelada” takes El Fantasma to his first Latin Airplay champ, the AfinArte-released track earns him a seventh ruler on Regional Mexican Airplay -and second this year- where the song climbs 6-1 with the Greatest Gainer honors, awarded weekly to the song with the largest surge in audience.

Here’s a recap of El Fantasma’s collection on No. 1s on Regional Mexican Airplay dating back to his first in 2019:

Peak, Title, Artist, Weeks At No. 1
June 1, 2019, “Encantadora,” four
Aug. 14, 2021, “Soy Buen Amigo,” one

Sept. 9, 2023, “La Vida Cara,” one
March 16, “El Exitoso,” one
June 22, “Sabor A Michelada,” one

Thanks to “Michelada,” released March 15 through AfinArte, the indie label returns to No. 1 on Latin Airplay for the first time in almost a decade. Voz de Mando’s “Levantando Polvodera” was the label’s first and last leader, for one week in charge in Feb. 2019.

In addition to its Latin Airplay and Regional Mexican Airplay wins, “Michelada” debuts at No. 50 on the airplay-, streaming- and digital-blended Hot Latin Songs chart, for El Fantasma’s 22nd career entries there.

The new achievements land amidst E Fantasma’s Se Activó La Chavalada 2024 tour, which launched Feb. 17 in Texas and continues through Nov. 27 in Chicago.

The Romeo Santos-produced bachata starts with 2.3 million audience impressions logged in the U.S. during the tracking period.

The song, a love letter for husband Ralphy Pina who was released from prison on May 24, concurrently earns the Dominican singer her 22nd top 10 on Latin Digital Song Sales, with a No. 7 debut.
