Wesley Snipes Clowns Marvel For Latest ‘Blade’ Setback

It’s going on five years since Marvel Studios announced that Mahershala Ali would be starring as the “Day Walker” in their new MCU iteration of Blade. Since then, the project has seen numerous changes to it’s script, directors and producers. Wesley Snipes is here for it all.

According to Variety, the Blade project recently suffered another setback when the film’s director, Yann Demange (Lovecraft Country, White Boy Rick), walked away from the project while picking up a new screen writer in Eric Pearson (Thor: Ragnarok, Black Widow). With rumors that Mahershala Ali is growing frustrated to the point that he’s got one foot out the door of the project already, Wesley Snipes seems to be reveling in the turmoil of the vampire universe that he made pop with his original Blade franchise that he kicked off back in 1998.

Taking to X to give his two cents about Blade’s latest hiccup, Snipes wrote, “Blade, lordylordylordy… Folks still lookin for the secret sauce, ridin snowmobiles in traffic, kinda rough. Daywalkers make it look easy, don’t they?”

We’re not sure how the higher ups over at Marvel Studios will receive such shade from the OG Day Walker, but he’s not wrong.

Since it’s announcement, production on Blade has seen all kinds of hiccups over the past few years that’s left everyone involved frustrated with it’s progress (or lack there of), and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be resolved anytime soon.

Still, Snipes might want to tread a bit lightly as it’s rumored that Marvel might want him back as Blade for a cameo in their highly-anticipated Avengers: Secret Wars film, which is said to feature every single actor who’s portrayed every Marvel superhero since, well, ever. Don’t shade yourself out a bag, homie.

Per Variety:

Marvel announced a “Blade” movie with Ali in July 2019. Bassam Tariq was the first director to join the project, although he exited in September 2022, roughly two months before the film was set to begin filming. Several screenwriters have also been announced through the years, from “Watchmen” scribe Stacy Osei-Kuffour to Michael Starrbury.

Variety reported last November that “Blade” had gone through at least five writers by that time. One person familiar with the script changes said the story at one point morphed into a narrative led by women and filled with life lessons. Speculation at the time said that Marvel was still looking to make the film but on a budget of less than $100 million.

Though there are rumors circulating that Marvel has met with Jordan Peele to possibly helm the project, nothing solid has been said as of yet. That being said, maybe Marvel should hire Wesley Snipes as a producer to help get Blade back on track. At this point what do they have to lose? Heck, even Stephen Dorff (the villain from the first Blade film) poked fun at Marvel for not being able to get their version of Blade up and running.

More from Variety:

“Marvel is used to me trashing them anyway,” Dorff told The Daily Beast last year. “How’s that PG ‘Blade’ movie going for you, that can’t get a director? [laughs] Because anybody who goes there is going to be laughed at by everyone, because we already did it and made it the best. There’s no [original ‘Blade’ director] Steve Norrington out there.”

That man hasn’t done anything of relevance since Blade in 1998 (no shots), and even he’s cutting ass on Marvel. That’s not a good look for the MCU, b. Just sayin’.

What do you think Marvel should do with their Blade project? Let us know in the comments section below.

The legendary Willie Mays, a trailblazing Black, pro baseball star, has passed away. He was 93.

On Tuesday, July 18, the San Francisco Giants and Mays family announced that he had passed early in the afternoon.

“My father has passed away peacefully and among loved ones,” said son Michael Mays in a statement. “I want to thank you all from the bottom of my broken heart for the unwavering love you have shown him over the years. You have been his life’s blood.”

Known as the “Say Hey Kid,” Mays’ talent included an incredible mix of power, speed and finesse, which made him one of the MLB’s most popular players during his heyday, no pun, and beyond.

Mays began his career with the Negro Leagues in 1948 and made his Major League debut with the then-New York Giants in 1951 at 20 years old, winning Rookie of the Year honors. Mays played in 24 All-Stars game and secured 12 Gold Glove Awards before ending his career with 660 home runs and a .301 career batting average when retiring in 1973.

In Game 1 of the World Series in 1954, the New York Giants were at home playing the Cleveland Indians, who were the favorites. With the scored tied 2-2 at the top of Cleveland’s Vic Wertz hit a fastball to deep center field in the Polo Grounds. Mays tracked the ball down, using all his speed to bring in the drive with an over the shoulder catch, with his back to home plate. The play would become known as “The Catch.”

Mays was voted into the Hall of Fame in 1979 and his number 24 was retired by the San Francisco Giants. Mays was awarded the prestigious Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2015.

Rest in powerful peace Willie Mays.

Phil Wickham Named Songwriter of the Year at 2024 BMI Christian Awards

Phil Wickham was named songwriter of the year at the 2024 BMI Christian Awards, which were held Tuesday (June 18) at BMI’s Nashville’s office. BMI’s AVP of creative, Nashville, Leslie Roberts hosted the invitation-only ceremony.

Wickham, 40, had a hand in writing four of this year’s award-winning songs — “Holy Forever,” “Hymn of Heaven,” “Then Christ Came” and “This Is Our God.” Wickham has received three Grammy nominations in the past two years, including one for his album I Believe at the Feb. 4 ceremony. He has amassed 11 top 10 hits on Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs chart, including “House of the Lord,” which reached No. 1 in 2022.

Wickham performed an acoustic rendition of his song “Hymn of Heaven” at the event.

Trending on Billboard

“Gratitude” was named the 2024 song of the year. Written by BMI songwriters Dante Bowe and Ben Hastings (APRA) and recorded by Brandon Lake, the song logged 28 weeks at No. 1 on Hot Country Songs. The track, featured on Lake’s album, House of Miracles, received nominations from the 2023 GMA Dove Awards for song of the year and worship recorded song of the year.

Essential Music Publishing took home the accolade for publisher of the year. Essential is responsible for 12 of the 25 most-performed songs of the year — “Cornerstone,” “God Is in This Story,” “Heart of God,” “Holy Forever,” “I Thank God,” “I’m So Blessed,” “Perfectly Loved,” “Same God,” “Thank God I Do,” “Then Christ Came,” “This Is Our God” and “Who I Am.”

In addition, the ceremony named 21 first-time winners for their role in writing the top 25 most-performed Christian songs of the previous year. They included pop powerhouses P!nk and Jeff Bhasker, who co-wrote the Lauren Daigle hit “Thank God I Do,” which topped Hot Christian Songs for 20 weeks.

Three first-time winners were double winners on the night — Jonathan Jay (“Fear Is Not My Future” and “Rest on Us”) and Jacob Mills and Levi Mills (“God Is Real” and “Never Not God”).

The complete winners list can be found here.

Wickham wasn’t the night’s only performer. Anne Wilson, 22, offered a stripped-down version of her hit, “Strong,” accompanied by BMI’s 2023 songwriter of the year, Jeff Pardo. Newcomer Charly Beathard made her BMI performance debut with “Hallelujah Anyway.”

Verzuz Co-Founders Swizz Beatz, Timbaland Secure Distribution Deal With Elon Musk’s X

Multimedia platform Verzuz, co-founded by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland, has secured a distribution partnership with Elon Musk’s X. The news was announced by Beatz and Timbaland during an activation in Cannes, France today (June 19).

Under the terms of the new partnership, the Verzuz co-founders maintain their full 100% ownership and creative control of the platform, while X has exclusive distribution rights. Now viewers will be able to watch the livestream series for free through X, which reaches an audience of more than 550 million active users.

Earlier this year, Beatz and Timbaland reacquired the Verzuz platform from previous partner Triller. At the same time, the pair retained their equity — along with the artists who participated in Verzuz — in Triller.

The last sing-off presented by Verzuz, whose president is Steve Pamon, was between R&B stars Omarion and Mario in Los Angeles in summer 2022. Also featuring a pre-show with Ray J, Bobby V, Pleasure P and Sammy, the battle drew over 5.1 million total viewers across Instagram, Fite TV, Triller, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Twitch.

The flirty ranchera, released in November 2020 and penned by Nodal and Edgar Barrera, finds Nodal head over heels for Aguilar — who, in return, isn’t impressed by his kind gestures. After all, she’s not the type of girl who easily falls for a guy, she sings.

The song reached No. 1 on Billboard‘s Regional Mexican Airplay chart in Januar 2021, making a then-17-year-old Aguilar the youngest female act on a lead role to achieve the feat. She concurrently earned her first No. 1 on any Latin airplay chart while Nodal captured his 10th on Latin Airplay.

Trending on Billboard

In addition to being part of the tour’s set list, the song is having its momentum four years after its release amid the viral news of Nodal and Aguilar’s romance.

“Now I find myself living a precious experience with a woman I love, with a love that took so many years for what is happening to happen and we are enjoying it, we are living the experience,” Nodal said of his new relationship with Aguilar, 20, just weeks after announcing his breakup with Argentine rapper, Cazzu.

Below, revisit the video and lyrics (translated to English) of “Dime Cómo Quieres.”

Everything began when I saw you pass by
I felt something nice that I can’t explain
You caught me and I liked you more
Oh, beautiful ranch girl, hi, how are you?

I’ll let you know from now on
That beautiful words are not enough
For you to be able to conquer me
I’m not one of those easy ones,
Like those little girls
With which I always see you with

And if I give you roses? (no matter what, they are going to wither)
And if I serenade you? (no matter what, my dad will kick you to the curb)

Tell me how you want me to love you
This boy will become what you please
Ask away from what beautiful mouth
For you, I’ll do anything

Tell me what else you want me to say
If my friends don’t like you
And my family much less
What will people think if they see us one day?

Ay, ay, ay
I’m not as bad as they say I am
Ay, ay, ay
I’m not that dumb to let myself be fooled
Ja, ja, ay, Angelita, don’t be so mean
And you, don’t be so flirtatious

And if I give you roses? (no matter what, they are going to wither)
And if I serenade you? (no matter what, my dad will kick you to the curb)

Tell me how you want me to love you
This boy will become what you please
Ask away from what beautiful mouth
For you, I’ll do anything

Tell me what else you want me to say
If my friends don’t like you
And my family much less
What will people think if they see us one day?

Ay, ay, ay
I’m not as bad as they say I am
Ay, ay, ay
I’m not that dumb to let myself be fooled

The overall Make Music Day event will be celebrated 120 countries with a total of 5,000 concerts and music events taking place that day. The celebrations seek to bring out the musician in all of us, regardless of skill level, with outdoor concerts, jam sessions, lessons and music-making of all kinds.

Make Music Day is presented by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. The concept was conceived by Jack Lang when he was French minister of culture.

The global online relay, dubbed Pulsations, will be streamed online at the makemusicday.org homepage. It will feature musicians in various countries playing a 10-minute set of their choosing, ending in a heartbeat rhythm. As one set ends, the next one will pick up the heartbeat rhythm in a different country, allowing for a seamless transition between musicians. Pulsations will begin in Auckland, New Zealand, and end in Paris.

“Since its inception in France in 1982, Make Music Day has transcended borders to become an international event,” said Pulsations organizers Dominique Hervieu (director of the Paris 2024 Cultural Olympiad) and Lang (now president of the Arab World Institute) in a joint statement. “Make Music Day aims to impart a universal dimension to this special day centered around music, widely regarded as the most unifying art form globally…. The Pulsations project mirrors our collective values, promoting camaraderie, peace, and mutual respect worldwide.”

The heartbeat rhythm that serves as the connective musical tissue is composed by French-Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf, according to the release announcing the festival. The global online performance will culminate with a livestream at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, where Ibrahim Maalouf & The Trumpets of Michel-Ange will perform an hourlong set to close out the four-hour musical relay,

Performers during the musical relay will include A.R. Rahman, who will perform live from the KM Music Conservatory in India; funk-pop band TOI in New Zealand, who will sing “Ain’t Just Dreaming,” which achieved chart success in that country; Dwight Trible, who will perform with the Fernando Pullum Youth Arts Center Jazz Ensemble in Los Angeles; and folk-rock duo Twin Flames performing at Hugh’s Room Live in Toronto.

Besides the online portion, the globe-spanning festival will be shown live on large public screens in several participating cities, including Paris, Toronto and Hanover, Germany.

“Sorry 4 That Much” was released June 7, the first day of the tracking week, via Universal Music Latino/UMLE. It starts at No. 4 on the multi-metric tally on the strength of streaming activity and radio airplay. The song registered 4.7 million official U.S. streams during the June 7-13 tracking week, according to Luminate. That sum yields a No. 5 start on the Latin Streaming Songs survey.

On the radio front, “Sorry 4 That Much” logged 4.2 million audience impressions, enough for a top 20 launch on the overall Latin Airplay list, at No. 19. It snatches double honors as the Hot Shot debut of the week and the Greatest Gainer of the week. “Sorry” concurrently opens at No. 5 on Latin Rhythm Airplay.

Streaming and radio activity surrounding “Sorry,” drives Feid to his first solo top 10 entry on Latin Airplay among five career top 10s. Here’s his collection of top 10 achievements:

Peak Position, Title, Artist, Peak Date
No. 10, “Hey Mor,” with Ozuna, March 4, 2023
No. 6, “Yandel 150,” with Yandel, March 25, 2023
No. 2, “Perro Negro,” with Bad Bunny, Nov. 4, 2023

“Sorry 4 That Much,” produced by Jowan, Wain and Rolo, joins another song by the 31-year-old Feid in the Hot Latin Songs’ top 10: “Luna,” with ATL Jacob, which rebounds to No. 9 after peaking at No. 7 on the May 11-dated tally.

On a global scale, “Sorry” arrives at No. 83 on the Billboard Global 200, for Feid’s 21st chart visit. Meanwhile, it percolates at No. 74 on the Global Excl. U.S. ranking.

Feid’s new accolade hits as the Colombian travels the U.S. for his ongoing FERXXOCALIPSIS World Tour which continues in full force, wrapping up the U.S. leg of the trek on July 8 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, and his recent performance announcement at the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa América U.S. opening ceremony at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on June 20.

Kevin Costner Talks Whitney Houston, Addresses Rumors That He’s Dating Jewel

Kevin Costner has poured cold water all over those rumors of a romance with Jewel.

The Yellowstone star stopped by SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show on Tuesday (June 18) to promote his new movie Horizon: An American Saga – and break his silence on that dating chatter.

He’s not hooked up, not in in love right now. “Jewel and I are friends. We’ve never gone out,” he tells Stern. “She’s special, and I don’t want these rumors to ruin our friendship because that’s what we have.”

The pair apparently bonded when they were hosted on Necker Island, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson’s private hideaway. “I got on a plane with nine people — Jewel was one of them,” he explains. “She was somebody I just had some tremendous conversations with.”

The gossip columns took notice when the singer, 50, and actor, 69, appeared together at a tennis fundraiser last December in the British Virgin Islands. Later, in April, Elle magazine published an interview in which Jewel gave her own response on the two-time Oscar winner, declaring him “a great person,” adding, “the public fascination is intense for sure.” And that was all.

Trending on Billboard

Costner enjoyed a hot streak in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s as the lead in The Untouchables, No Way Out, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, Dances With Wolves and The Bodyguard, in which he played the titular character alongside the late superstar artist Whitney Houston.

Conversation moved on to Houston, who, by making her silver screen debut as Rachel Marron and landing a massive, global hit with the film’s soundtrack, become one of the biggest stars of them all.

“It could have been Michelle Pfeiffer, it could have been Julia Roberts,” remarks Costner, “but when I looked at it, I thought, ‘No, it should be Whitney Houston’”. He recounts, “for me, it was so easy to go, ‘Well this is the most beautiful girl, this is the one who can sing … this is the girl.’”

Houston, whose life and premature death in 2012 at the age of 48 is retold in the 2018 documentary Whitney, was initially out of her comfort zone in The Bodyguard.

She “didn’t really know how to do [her character’s first] line and I said, ‘We have to find the acid in you … the kind of diva moment in you,’” Costner explains. “I said, ‘If you’re uncertain about things, Whitney, just look at me and tell me and we will drift off into the corner and I’ll make this right for you.’”

It was Costner’s idea for Houston to kick off her cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” a cappella, he reckons. “If she’s going to sing a song, the way she can really show that she really loved me was she would do it without a single note and that would prove how brave she is,’” he claims.

And in a bolt from the blue, Costner confirmed he had planned on making a sequel to The Bodyguard, with Princess Diana in a co-starring role. “She was very sweet,” Costner says of the late member of royalty, who died 1997, aged 36. “I never made that movie because I could not replace Princess Di,” he says. Was a kissing scene written into the script? “I wasn’t going to make the full romance about her,” he admits, “but there was going to be a moment.”

Costner returns to the wild west for chapter one of Horizon, due out June 28, for which he stars and directs. Ahead of release, Costner dropped a different kind of project – “Mountainside Mocha Latte,” a coffee collaboration with Green Mountain Coffee Roasters.

Charli XCX Dominates Dance Charts With ‘Brat’

Charli XCX blankets Billboard’s June 22-dated dance charts following the release of her sixth studio LP, Brat. The set opens at No. 1 on Top Dance/Electronic Albums (her first leader there), while all 15 of its standard-edition tracks – plus two bonus cuts – cover Hot Dance/Electronic Songs.

Brat debuts with 77,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending June 13, according to Luminate. That marks the biggest week of Charli’s career, by units. It also earns her highest rank on the all-genre Billboard 200, where it starts at No. 3.

Trending on Billboard

The album’s first-week sum includes 30,000 copies sold on vinyl, fueling its No. 1 debut on the Vinyl Albums ranking.

Brat drew 46.72 million on-demand official streams of its deluxe edition’s 18 songs, equaling 37,000 SEA units (streaming-equivalent albums).

Brat was released on June 7 with 15 tracks and its deluxe edition arrived three days later. The deluxe edition was aptly titled Brat and it’s the same but there’s three more songs so it’s not, dominates Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, with 17 of its 18 titles appearing on this week’s 50-position chart. That gives Charli more than one third (34%) of the dance chart’s total real estate. Only Skrillex has ever logged more simultaneous entries, when he had 20 songs on the March 4, 2023-dated edition.

Thirteen of Charli’s 17 appearances are debuts, led by “Talk Talk” at No. 5. Four more new cuts crack the top 20, including “Sympathy Is A Knife,” “365” and “Everything is Romantic,” all between Nos. 10-14.

Charli released a handful of singles in the lead-up to Brat, and those make big moves. “360” is the week’s Greatest Gainer/Streaming, up 95% to 6.6 million clicks, pushing it from No. 7 to a new peak of No. 3. “Von Dutch” is the Greatest Gainer/Sales, buoying 25-7, returning to its debut-week high. Plus, “Club Classic” and “B2B” both re-enter the list at new peaks, back at Nos. 11 and 19, respectively.

The avalanche of Brat tracks nearly triples Charli’s history on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, where she’d previously charted 10 songs. Notably, the new album’s “Von Dutch” and the other pre-release singles marked her first solo unaccompanied entries on the list. “360” scores her highest rank as a lead artist, while she had topped the chart in 2013 via her featured turn on Icona Pop’s “I Love It.”

Brat isn’t the only new release impacting this week’s dance charts. Kaytranada’s Timeless debuts at No. 2 on Top Dance/Electronic Songs with 21,000 units, while also hitting No. 2 on Top R&B Albums, No. 6 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and No. 28 on the Billboard 200.

Nine of the album’s tracks debut on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, topped by “Witchy,” featuring Childish Gambino, at No. 12. Other entries include collaborations with Anderson .PaakDon Toliver, and PinkPantheress.
