Kendrick Lamar becomes the first musician to star in a Gatorade commercial, Shaboozey makes a cameo in the NBA Playoffs kick-off commercial, and the playoffs have started with all your favorite artists showing up and supporting their teams. Here’s your Billboard News sports roundup. Kendrick Lamar continues to top the charts and make history. The ‘GNX’ rapper becomes the first musician to appear in a Gatorade commercial. Set to his song “Peekaboo,” Kendrick stars in the commercial alongside NBA and WNBA superstars like Jayson Tatum, Luka Dončić, Caitlin Clark and A’ja Wilson, as well as former Colorado quarterback and NFL prospect Shedeur Sanders. And Kendrick is not the only one starring in sports commercials. Country star Shaboozey also made a cameo in the NBA Playoffs commercial. Set to the tune of Aerosmith’s “Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” the ad features some of the NBA’s biggest stars of the season, such as Jayson Tatum, Nikola Jokić, Donovan Mitchell, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Karl-Anthony Towns. Speaking of the NBA Playoffs, the stars are showing out for their favorite teams. A bevvy of celebs showed up to support the Knicks for Game 2 against the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday. Unfortunately, the Knicks were not able to win Game 2 after winning Game 1 on Saturday. On the west side, celebs also showed out to support the Lakers in their second game against the Timberwolves. This time, the Lakers were able to win Game 2 and even out the series.

Eight years after being banned from performing in the U.S. due to accusations by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control for money laundering in 2017, Julión Álvarez — “The Box Office King” — took to SoFi Stadium for a sold-out night of Mexican music, including corridos, a genre that’s currently the subject of a whole lot of controversy, with stars like Natanael Cano and now Luis R Conriquez, who was recently prohibited from performing “narcocorridos” during a set in Mexico.
“They said that if I sang a corrido, they would cut off the sound,” Conriquez told Billboard Latin’s Leila Cobo. The fans booed and threw things on stage, but Luis had his support from the music community backing him up, like Peso Pluma and Alejandro Fernández, who’s not even in the genre, reaching out, saying, “Keep your head up, man, hang in there.” Conriquez was just following the rules and regulations established by Texcoco, a Mexican municipality that, since April 9, prohibited “expressions that glorify violence” following the implementation of a law targeting mass events.
But corridos are nothing new. The style dates back to the Mexican revolution in the early 20th century. Today, in 2025, narcocorridos, which specifically talk about the exploits of drug dealers, are getting pushback. Pope Francis met with many musicians, like Bono, who spoke with him on climate change and social issues. Even Katy Perry was a fan, who in 2018 said: “I’m such a big fan of Pope Francis. It’s a combination of compassion, humility, sternness and refusal. He is a rebel — a rebel for Jesus.”

I’m all right, man. How are you doing?
It’s a blessed day. It is a blessed day because we’re gonna do something special here. One of your albums has a special anniversary this year. All I Want Is You 15. What did that number mean to you? Because that’s a whole ninth-grade album I was telling you before.
It’s a journey, you know, you think about, you know how much time it took to get that album out, right? You know, on what it took to get there, just in terms of cycles and growth and challenges and failures and learning experiences, and then to kind of have all of the blessings in between that point and this point in my career. It’s beautiful. This is a trip, man.
Walk us back to when you met, of course, the big homie record, exact extraordinaire, Mark Pitts, because you played them some records, which I saw was originally meant for Usher and that dude was like, “Uh uh, we gonna keep this. We gonna keep Miguel. We gonna build.” Talk about that.

For me, it was our first song, “Blockbuster” – the energy was unreal. We’re very excited to perform at Coachella. I feel like it’s going to be completely different to what we’ve done up until now. We know that a lot of fans that are going to be coming, there’s going to be other people that don’t even know about us, so we’re very excited to meet our fans, but also to really show everyone what we can do and let people listen to our music. This is the first time preparing this kind of long, except for our world tours or something. As you can see, we rented this space and we’ve been rehearsing with the band and dancers. We’ve been putting in a lot of hours. We’re really fully prepared and so excited for this big stuff for Coachella. We started preparing for Coachella about last month, so it’s been like one month. We’ve planned every single moment, every single object on the stage. It started from us, it started from our team. We’ve done a lot of practice, we went back and forth a lot of times choosing the setlist, choosing the music. There’s a lot of people, a lot of professionals in our company that’s just made it together with us, so really exciting, really fun moment for us.
