Billboard Explains: The Women of Hip-Hop

Alyssa Caverly:
2023 marks the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, and we’re celebrating the women who changed the genre. It used to be dominated by men, but not anymore. Women have broken down hip-hop barriers and paved the way for the superstars of today.

But who are the female trailblazers? Who’s taking over now? And how has this genre evolved? This is Billboard Explains: The Women of Hip-Hop.

DJ Kool Herc is officially credited for starting the hip- hop movement at a birthday party in the Bronx in 1973. But did you know that a woman played a huge role in those early years? Sylvia Robinson created Sugar Hill gang, whose 1980s track “Rappers Delight” was the first top 40 rap hit on the Hot 100.

As for the first female rapper, we need to give credit to MC Sha-Rock, hip-hop’s first female MC. She started off as a member of the hip-hop crew Funky 4+1. Her style of delivering raps on mixtapes influenced female rappers to come.

Then there was Roxanne Shanté and MC Lyte, who really made a name for themselves early on as well. But the biggest growth happened throughout the ’80s and ’90s. As more female rappers battled their way to the top, including Queen Latifah and Salt-N-Peppa. Lil’ Kim and Foxy Brown embraced their sexuality on their terms, while Missy Elliott created some of the most innovative music videos of the decade, all while rocking a unique style.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Movie, Victoria’s Secret World Tour, 50 Cent Concert Assault & More | Billboard News

Taylor Swift is releasing “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour” concert film, and it’s coming to a movie theater soon. Victoria’s Secret reveals its promo for their Victoria’s Secret World Tour featuring models Hailey Bieber, Gigi Hadid and Honey Dijon as well as Victoria’s Secret Angels Candice Swanepoel, Adriana Lima, Lily Aldridge and more. Doja Cat is set to headline the event. Ellie Goulding experiences a mishap at her concert, and 50 Cent throws a microphone into the crowd at his recent show. We look through the top songs of the summer of 2022. Mexican pop group RBD is featured on Billboard’s cover, as they talk about their highly anticipated reunion and more!

Rania Aniftos:
Taylor Swift is bringing her Eras Tour to the big screen. Ellie Goulding dodges pyrotechnics while a 50 Cent fan couldn’t dodge his mic. Victoria’s Secret brings back their fashion show with some star power. RBD graces the cover of Billboard, and we look back at last year’s songs of the summer.

I’m Rania Aniftos for Billboard News. It’s Thursday, August 31st and you’re getting a new opportunity to see one of this year’s biggest tours. If you missed your chance to see Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, you’re in luck. It’s hitting the big screen. The concert film will hit AMC Theaters starting on October 13th, with adult tickets going for $19.89 — her next album — and child tickets going for, you guessed it, $13.13. Taylor tweeted the trailer for the film saying in part “Eras attire, friendship bracelets, singing and dancing encouraged.”

You can catch the film in the U.S., Canada and Mexico and will even be screening on IMAX and Dolby Cinema at AMC, but you won’t be able to use your AMC A-list so make sure you get your tickets ASAP.

Speaking of concerts, they can be a dangerous spot not only for the artists but for the fans too. Ellie Goulding and a 50 Cent fan get added to the long list of people getting assaulted at concerts. Ellie Goulding got quite the surprise in this viral video when performing her song “Miracle” during the Victorious Festival.

Billboard’s Top 5 Songs of the Summer 2022 | Billboard News

Billboard looks back and counts down the top five songs that ruled the summer of 2022.

Rania Aniftos:
We’ve made it to the last week before our big reveal. What were the big songs of the summer last year? Let’s dive right into our top five.

Coming in at No. 5: a song that had a huge resurgence thanks to Stranger Things. Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” kicks us off.

Our next song includes an epic collab with Future, Drake and Tems. They team up for the No. 4 song on the Hot 100 Songs of the Summer with “Wait for You.”

Jack Harlow samples Fergie’s “Glamorous” for our No. 3 song of the summer, a throwback that helped to get to the top. Jack Harlow’s “First Class” comes in next.

Our No. 2 song is one we could not get out of our heads. Lizzo had us jamming last summer to “About Damn Time.”

And we were all in our feelings last summer when Harry Styles put out the top song: his whimsical ballot “As It Was” — a perfect mix of nostalgia and hope became the No. 1 song of the summer.

Next week, the big reveal the top song of 2023. What do you think will make the top of the list?

RBD Talks Reuniting, How They’ve Grown, What They’ve Learned & More | Billboard Cover

Mexican pop group RBD talks with Billboard Latin Chief Content Officer Leila Cobo about why they’ve decided now is the right time for them to reunite, reflect on their past and how they’ve grown, and what they’ve learned since they’ve been away.

Maite Perroni:
What’s different is that before, we met as the result of an audition, and this time it’s by choice.

Leila Cobo:
Welcome, RBD!

Actually, are you nervous, a little bit?

Dulce María:
Yes.

Christian:
We have gone through all the emotions. We have, since we started rehearsals, I think when we started rehearsals we went through the part where we said: “Oh no … I don’t think we can dance and sing at the same time.” We stopped doing it so long ago that it was complicated at the beginning, and the truth is that we each have completely different personalities. So this time we are doing it on our terms, based on things we like, which has also been more complicated because obviously for all of us to agree with each other has been complicated but I think it’s good because it is a beautiful way to return to this project that gave us all so much but from the maturity and well … “maturity” in what we try to be mature, but with much more life experience and more awareness of what we want to show the public and how we want to do it.

Leila Cobo:
Now, many people who are going to see you now saw you in RBD Part One. What is different this time, specifically, if you can give me an example?

Christopher:
On stage, the creative part is obviously an upgrade in all areas, as you said in the visuals, in all the creative parts that we all added to this new tour, the songs as well, we were part of the compositions.

Beyoncé Becomes Mayor, TXT & Doja Cat’s New Albums, Travis Scott’s Tour & More | Billboard News

Travis Scott announces his Utopia – Circus Maximus Tour. Doja Cat’s upcoming album ‘Scarlet’ will arrive on September 22nd. TXT announced their upcoming new album ‘The Name Chapter: FREEFALL.’ We spoke with K-pop star Leo at KCON LA. And more!

Tetris Kelly:
Travis Scott is taking his No. 1 album on tour. New music is on the way from Doja Cat and TXT. Beyonce adds mayor to her long list of titles. I catch up with K-pop newcomer LEO, and we look back at J.Lo and Shakira’s epic Super Bowl halftime show.

We’re back with more Billboard News. I’m Tetris Kelly. It’s Wednesday, August 30th, and we’ve got another major tour to add to this year’s list.

Travis Scott is taking his ‘Utopia’ album on tour, but one location is noticeably missing from the announcement. Travis Scott performed his Billboard 200 chart-topping album for the first time in Rome at the Circus Maximus. The 60,000-person show caused quite the controversy, with 60 people reportedly getting injured and locals calling authorities reporting they thought they were experiencing an earthquake. Prior to that, Travis was supposed to perform the album in front of the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt but ended up getting canceled. But North America will get the Utopia – Circus Maximus experience when the tour starts in Charlotte, North Carolina, on October 11th, and makes 28 stops ending in Toronto on December 29th. He’ll play his largest headlining show here in LA at SoFi Stadium. But one location is missing from the schedule. It’s his hometown of Houston, Texas. The last time Travis Scott performed there was during the Astroworld Festival in 2021, where 10 people tragically died. A Houston grand jury declined to file criminal charges against Scott.

The show was the first in history to include an exclusively Latin lineup, including surprise moments from Reggaeton kings Bad Bunny and J Balvin. In her Netflix documentary, J. Lo spoke about packing so much into one performance.

Unknown:
We are on the edge of being able to get this on the field.

I can’t do it if you guys keep just pressing us.

Some of the biggest highlights included Shakira drawing inspiration from around the world, and J. Lo’s epic air shows, spinning high above the field. J. Lo’s daughter even joined her to make an emotional statement, and both Shakira and J. Lo closed the show together with “Let’s Get Loud.” We could have watched 15 more minutes of that, but hey, football.
