Dua Lipa On the Inspiration Behind ‘Radical Optimism,’ Favorite Spice Girl & More | Billboard News

Dua Lipa talks about the inspiration behind the interesting cover photo for her upcoming third album ‘Radical Optimism,’ how she wrote her latest single “Training Season,” how the album is so influenced by English bands and artists like Oasis, Portishead and Massive Attack, who her favorite Spice Girl is and more!

Tetris Kelly
‘Radical Optimism’ your third album, how is this new era of Dua Lipa feeling.

Dua Lipa
It feels good I mean it feels for lack of a better word radically optimistic

Tetris Kelly
The date is May 3rd and the project is Dua Lipa’s ‘Radical Optimism’ and we had the sweetest chat with the pop star about the brand new album, bad dates and oh, and the Spice Girls. The cover is kind of a juxtaposition, right you’re in this calm water, the shark so tell me the inspiration behind the cover art?

Dua Lipa
Throughout the whole record there is this idea of chaos happening around and me trying to push through it in a way that feels authentic and honest. To me this is obviously an overly dramatic way to to explain that but I feel like it says radical optimism to me in the in the clearest sense of being in deep waters

Tetris Kelly
And authentic she’s being, she says “Training Season” is over.

Dua Lipa
In a way I been on a couple of dates, like a string of string of bad dates.

Tetris Kelly
Oh, no.

Dua Lipa
I went into the studio and I was like, right I’m done. You know, like, I don’t want to like be anyone like “Training Season” is over, I’m done training up these boys. And what started off as a joke in the studio ended up being like “Training Season” became like the term that we stuck with.

PinkPantheress Encourages Her Younger Self to Get Into Music Faster | Billboard’s Women in Music 2024

PinkPantheress says she wishes she would have gotten into music faster when giving advice to her younger self backstage at Billboard’s Women in Music 2024.

PinkPantheress
Some advice that I give to my younger self would be to just dive in head first into music sooner because there’s no need to be shy or to be concerned about what other people think about the craft that you make. Because if you believe it’s going to be successful then it doesn’t matter what people think. It’s just worth going for it, see where it goes. If it goes well, then great. If it doesn’t go well, then at least you tried.

Maren Morris Shares 5 Things You Didn’t Know About Her Music | Billboard Women In Music 2024

Maren Morris shares five things you didn’t know about her music-making process backstage at Billboard’s Women In Music 2024.

Maren Morris
I’m Maren Morris. And these are five things you don’t know about my music. I cannot record vocals drunk, the second any alcohol touches my lips, it sounds awful. So I don’t know, I wish I could I feel like I could be a looser singer if I had a few glasses of wine. But yeah, I overthink it. I get a lot of questions from people about how songs get written how they start. There’s no rhyme or reason. Sometimes it’s I start with a title. Sometimes I start with a melody that I recorded in my voice app. And sometimes it’s just a lyric idea. But I feel like that’s kind of a fun thing is that I never know how the song will begin. I wrote my song “The Bones” in about an hour. And then I think we had it recorded an hour later. So sometimes not all the time, you get a really fast ditty. And you think the song gods when that happens. One of my favorite venues is Red Rocks, you’re outside, you’re under the stars, you’re in the elements. And it just is like a communal show. Get my musical inspiration. Honestly, from conversations with friends. I feel like they at this point, they know if I stop or space out after they’ve said something. It’s because I’m mining our conversation for lyric ideas. Not all the time, but they know when like Maren is not here anymore and it’s because I’m like thinking about, “how will I turn this into a song tomorrow?” And those are five things you did not know.

Tyla & Travis Scott Brave the Storm in Steamy ‘Water (Remix)’ Video: Watch

Ahead of the arrival of her eponymous debut album on Friday (March 22), Tyla is reveling in romance in the Travis Scott-assisted “Water (Remix)” video.

A shirtless Scott disregards the drizzle and pushes up on Tyla to deliver his intoxicating verse, staring through his white shades into her soul. “You keep it wet, that’s a real-life challenge/ All that ass gotta pour out of gallons/ Beauty in the top, keep balance,” he raps.

Trending on Billboard

The burgeoning amapiano/R&B star initially didn’t want to have a “Water” remix, but after Travis reached out, she couldn’t resist wanting to hear what he’d bring to the record.

“I didn’t really think of doing a remix. I was like, ‘Nah, like, let’s just have “Water,” it’s cool, whatever.’ But then people were reaching out and I was like, ‘oh my word, oh my word,’” Tyla told Complex in December.

“And I started getting excited and then Travis reached out and I literally couldn’t… like, I could not say no; his music is crazy. So after he reached out, we sent him that open verse and he came back and he killed it, you know, he killed it.”

“Water” was released by Tyla last July, with the Cactus Jack boss hopping on the official remix in November. Marshmellow also joined in on a second remix.

Tyla’s breakout hit has remained a Billboard Hot 100 staple for over five months. The track sits at No. 17 on this week’s chart after reaching a peak of No. 7.

“From the beginning of the record-making process, we made it a point to find the best chemistry between creatives from different backgrounds to reflect the worldly influences you hear in the song,” Epic Records president Ezekiel Lewis said to Billboard in January. “That is a key factor in enabling it to appeal to audiences not only in the U.S. but across the globe.”

Tyla’s self-titled debut will be unleashed on Friday (March 22) with features from Gunna, Tems, Becky G and more.

We took over the Houston Rodeo and thanks to Spotify, we caught up with your favorite artists. Spotify celebrated La Tierra de Texas at shows with acts like Ivan Cornejo, Los Tigres del Norte and more!

Tetris Kelly:
Food, fun and tons of amazing music. Hey, it’s Tetris Kelly with Billboard News. We’re at Houston, Livestock Show and Rodeo. We’re taking you up close and personal with your favorite artists. Thanks to Spotify, Billboard has all the access.

The Houston Rodeo draws millions of people from all over the world with food, games and so much entertainment. In its 92nd year, the Rodeo is the hottest event in Houston. With daily musical acts, there’s something for everyone. And I’m right here on the floor at the NRG Stadium where your favorite artists are about to take the stage. Música Mexicana was well represented with acts like Ivan Cornejo.

Ivan Cornejo:
My first show was here in Houston. Half the crowd was my family and the other 12 people, you know, just fans. It feels nice to just come back two years later and just do the Houston Rodeo which was insane for me. It’s a beautiful feeling. Houston has always showed me so much love.

Tetris Kelly:
Spotify has got the fiesta in full force here at the Rodeo. Their activation at the Houston Rodeo brought authentic Mexican culture to the forefront. The La Tierra De Texas space celebrated Tejano culture with bumping tunes from Spotify’s Rompiendo: Houston playlist, air fresheners and two free months of Spotify Premium. Go Tejano Day was the epicenter of Mexican pride, highlighting the greatness of Música Mexicana. Los Tigres Del Norte made their big return breaking their own attendance record with 75,595 fans of the stadium.

Los Tigres Del Norte:
We broke our own record today. It feels fantastic. It feels very emotional. This is the fifth time that we’ve come here in Houston. Next time that you come here we want to prepare a better show for them. This is our responsibility.

Bebe Rexha Shares What She Learned From Kylie Minogue’s Grammy Win | Billboard Women In Music 2024

Bebe Rexha offers advice to her younger self, talks about learning from Kylie Minogue’s Grammy win & more backstage at Billboard’s Women In Music 2024.

Bebe Rexha:
Advice I would give my younger self is to, and I see it a lot of times because I’ve helped a lot of other artists, younger artists that are trying to make their way up. And I noticed that everybody’s always so antsy, you know, everybody feels that their time is running out. And I think that’s something, especially for women that’s something that’s been created in our heads to be like, “Oh, the clock is ticking.” But when it’s for other men and other artists, when they get older, it’s hotter, that they’re sexy and they have gray hair.

But you know I was nominated for Grammy this year and you know who won in that category? Kylie Minogue, who’s 50 and she’s still the queen of dance. So I feel like what I’m learning and what I would tell my younger self is to take a chill pill. It’s gonna all work out. Age has nothing to do with it. It’s all talent.

Tetris Kelly
Hey, what’s up it’s Tetris with Billboard News and we get to have some fun today I’m hanging out with some fellas from THE BOYZ.

Tetris Kelly
You just dropped a brand new project Phantasy Pt.3 So now that it’s all out, I mean, you guys decided to release it in three parts. But what makes this one different than the first two?

Well, we took the word Phantasy and split it up into three different kind of worlds. And this one is kind of like funeral slash graduation. It’s kind of saying goodbye to the past and welcoming the future. So it’s kind of a emotional but hopeful kind of vibe.

Tetris Kelly
Okay, so can you tell me now what’s part of the funeral? What are some things you guys think you’re saying goodbye to?

Well, in a graduation, you’re essentially saying goodbye to your previous years and letting go of the past. If you’re looking at our music video, we’re actually playing students, we’re actually at a graduation. And so you can feel a lot of the vibes watching the music video.
