Noah Lyles is sitting at the top of the track and field throne after a star-making showing at the 2023 World Athletic Championships in Budapest. After winning three gold medals at the events, Lyles caused a stir after speaking at a press conference and challenging the world champion title bestowed upon the NBA champions year to year.
Noah Lyles, 26, is a six-time world champion and the leading 200m runner according to the World Athletics rankings system. As reported by USA Today, Lyles spoke last Friday (August 25) at a news conference and answered a question on how the American track team can raise interest and improve interest in the sport. Lyles came back with a fiery answer that matched his outsized personality on the track.

“You know the thing that hurts me the most is that I have to watch the NBA Finals and they have ‘world champion’ on their head,” Lyles said to the reporter. “World champion of what? The United States?”
Lyles added, “Don’t get me wrong. I love the U.S., at times – but that ain’t the world. That is not the world. We are the world. We have almost every country out here fighting, thriving, putting on their flag to show that they are represented. There ain’t no flags in the NBA.”
While his words had some supporters, many online were quick to point out that the NBA is comprised of several international players, some of whom are champions in their own country. Last year’s NBA MVP was Nikola Jokic, a former second-round pick who hails from Serbia.
Speaking of the NBA, several players, including Kevin Durant and Devin Booker among others, had plenty to say about Lyles’ comments. ESPN’s SportsCenter X account compiled some of the comments, which can be viewed below. We also share a video from First Take discussing the quip.

Shakira will make history at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 12, becoming the first South American artist to receive the Video Vanguard Award. The Colombian-born superstar will become the second Latina artist to receive that marquee award. Jennifer Lopez, who was born in the Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, received the honor five years ago.
Women have thoroughly dominated this category in recent years. Shakira follows Rihanna (2016), P!nk (2017), Lopez (2018), Missy Elliott (2019) and Nicki Minaj (2022). There was no recipient in 2020-21. The last man to win the award was Kanye West in 2015.

Shakira is also set to perform on the VMAs for the first time in 17 years. This maintains a recent VMAs tradition. Starting with Justin Timberlake in 2013, the Video Vanguard award has been accompanied by an extended performance from the recipient, usually featuring a career-spanning medley of hits.

Shakira is very likely to perform her 2023 smash “TQG,” a collab with Karol G that debuted and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March. Karol G has already been announced as a performer on this year’s show (along with Demi Lovato, Måneskin and Stray Kids).

This has been one of Shakira’s biggest and busiest years. In January, she debuted and peaked at No. 9 on the Hot 100 with the Bizarrap collab “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” which made her the first female vocalist to reach the top 10 with a Spanish-language track. That single enabled Shakira to set 14 Guinness World Records, including the most streamed Latin track on Spotify in 24 hours, most viewed Latin video on YouTube in 24 hours, fastest Latin track to reach 100 million views on YouTube, and most streamed Latin track on Spotify in one week.

And that was just the start of Shakira’s red-hot year. As noted above, she reached No. 7 on the Hot 100 in March with “TQG,” making 2023 the first year in which she has had two songs peak in the top 10 on the all-genre chart. In April, Shakira was named Billboard’s Latin Woman of the Year. In July, she became the first artist to hold down the top three spots on Billboard’s Latin Pop Airplay chart in the list’s nearly 30-year history.

“Shakira is a true global force who continues to inspire and influence the masses with her unique, musical prowess,” Bruce Gillmer, president of music, music talent, programming and events, Paramount and chief content officer, Music, Paramount+, said in a statement. “She’s a trailblazer for women around the world and one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music. Her massive impact across the musical landscape will be long-lasting as she continues to create and entertain at the highest level.”

The 2023 VMAs will air live from Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Shakira is a four-time VMAs nominee this year. She’s up for artist of the year; best Latin and best collaboration for “TQG”; and best Latin again for “Acróstico.”

The four-time VMAs winner took home her first Moon Person in 2000 for International Viewer’s Choice (Latin America North). She won again in that category in 2002. In 2006, she won best choreography for “Hips Don’t Lie,” which featured Wyclef Jean. The following year, she won Most Earth Shattering Collaboration – yes, that was an actual, competitive category – for “Beautiful Liar,” a collab with Beyoncé.

Shakira’s most recent VMAs performance was in 2006, where she teamed with Jean to perform the aforementioned “Hips Don’t Lie,” which was a video of the year nominee and a No. 1 hit on the Hot 100. In 2005, she made VMAs history with the show’s first performance entirely in Spanish – “La Tortura” featuring Alejandro Sanz. Shakira made her VMAs performance debut in 2002, with “Objection (Tango)” featuring her signature belly-dancing moves and an impressive crowd surf.

MTV and Toyota Motor North America, which is presenting the Video Vanguard Award for the first time, will celebrate Shakira’s honor through longform, music-centric content set to debut during the VMAs broadcast.

The Video Vanguard Award, which is presented to an artist for their “outstanding contributions and profound impact on music video and popular culture,” has arguably come to rival video of the year as the most anticipated award of the night.

The award was named in honor of Michael Jackson in 1991, but the channel has been moving away from the association in recent years, since the 2019 drama Leaving Neverland put a new focus on molestation allegations. The press release announcing Shakira as this year’s recipient included his name just once out of five references to the award.

Other artists who were thought to be in contention for the Video Vanguard Award this year included Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Drake, Selena Gomez, Bruno Mars, Jonas Brothers, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar and Katy Perry.

Taylor Swift leads this year’s nominations with eight nods, followed by SZA (six), Doja Cat, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo and Sam Smith (five each), and BLACKPINK, Diddy and Shakira (four each). Shakira is the only one of these artists who has been confirmed as a performer on the show, though more artists are expected to be announced later this week.

Fans can vote for their favorites across 15 gender-neutral categories by visiting vote.mtv.com through Friday, Sept. 1; voting for best new artist will remain active into the show. Nominations for socially-voted categories, including group of the year and song of summer, will be announced at a later date.

MTV has yet to announce the host of this year’s show or the Global Icon award recipient. Last year’s show was co-hosted by LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow; the Global Icon award went to Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Bruce Gillmer and Den of Thieves co-founder Jesse Ignjatovic are executive producers of the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. Barb Bialkowski is co-executive producer. Alicia Portugal and Jackie Barba serve as executives in charge of production. Wendy Plaut is executive in charge of celebrity talent. Lisa Lauricella is music talent executive.

Joe Budden & Gillie Da Kid are both former rappers turned podcasters who found success in the broadcast world and had a mild feud that ended with the pair squashing the beef. In that olive branch moment, both Joe Budden and Gillie Da Kid floated the idea of a boxing match with Gillie claiming he’d put the beats on Budden.
Joe Budden was a recent guest on the Million Dollaz Worth Of Game podcast with Gillie Da Kid alongside his partner and family member Wallo. At various times during the appearance, Gillie and Budden took shots at each other, which reached a head earlier this year.

Related Stories

During a broadcast of his eponymously named podcast, Budden clowned Gillie for having a small bedroom window in hilarious fashion. Gillie came back with his own barbs too and it appeared that the so-called “Pod Wars” Budden often references on his show was truly underway.
The beef was settled soon as Budden joined MDWOG but Gillie used the moment to roast Budden’s fashion senses in relentless fashion. Budden seemed unbothered by Gillie’s swipes and retorted with some of his own.
As the conversation wore on, the celebrity boxing match idea was floated with Gillie saying he’d mop Budden with the hands. Gillie Da Kid has demonstrated his hand skills before during a live taping of the podcast with Floyd Mayweather as a guest. Budden has also famously shared that he’s no slouch with the mitts either. Either way, if this happens, hopefully, they make it a charitable event or something of the sort.

Fyre Festival, the epic event that was replete with struggle, is making a triumphant return according to its founder. Billy McFarland shared that he’s putting on part two of the beleaguered festival, promising that this time around won’t be a repeat of the last.
We’ve documented the trials and tribulations of the first Fyre Festival, which McFarland and rapper Ja Rule partnered on to bring to the masses. The event promised a bevy of top entertainment acts, lodging, food, and the like but the reality was far from what was advertised. This time, McFarland is drumming up interest on social media although he has yet to share any actual details.

“It really all started in a seven-month stint in solitary confinement,” McFarland begins in his video announcement. “I wrote out this 50-page plan of how it would take this overall interest and demand in Fyre, and how it would take my ability to bring people from around the world together to make the impossible happen.”
While McFarland puffs his chest out and says he’s working with new partners that will bring the Fyre Festival 2 vision to life, he is purposefully vague in his message but does mention that there is a Broadway music based on the festival in development.
Fyre Festival is on schedule to materialize in 2024 in the Caribbean, with pop-up events happening around the globe in the lead-up to the event. No word yet on who is taking care of the food or lodging, but we’d urge travelers to pack a lunch and an air mattress just in case.

Sha’Carri Richardson took to the track Monday (August 21) at the World Athletic Championships with the odds stacked against her and everyone seemingly counting her out. The Dallas native shocked everyone but herself by not only winning the gold medal in the 100-meter race but also setting a championship record in the process.
As NBC Sports reported, Sha’Carri Richardson, 23, faced off against favorites Jamaicans Shericka Jackson and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, in her first world championship race. The pressure she undoubtedly endured was hardly present as a focused but loose Richardson was the first one to take the field and enter her outside lane.
As the commentators kept hammering home, Richardson needed to have an almost perfect start to have a chance. Even with everything going as planned, it was clear from the commentary that Jackson or Fraser-Pryce were the expected winners as the Jamaican team is typically dominant in this event.
History and records aside, Richardson beat the field, coming in at 10.65 seconds. Jackson earned a silver medal with a time of 10.72, and Fraser-Pryce won bronze with a time of 10.77. With this win, Richardson is the world’s fastest woman on the track and field scene.

After crossing the finish line, Richardson reacted in disbelief and appeared to be in shock. When the moment was confirmed on overheard screens and on the track, Richardson finally allowed herself to take an American flag, draped herself in the flag and celebrated with glee.
The epic win comes two years after Richardson was hit with a positive marijuana test disqualification for her Olympic Trials 100m win. From there, it was a slow climb back into the good graces of the track and field community but Richardson doesn’t seem to desire the world’s adoration after betting on herself. In her post-race commentary, Richardson once again repeated that she isn’t racing for the world’s approval and that the support of her family is all she needs.

Amen to that.
Congratulations to Sha’Carri Richardson on the big win. Keep scrolling to watch the race and read reactions from X, formerly known as Twitter.

Sha’Carri Richardson was once considered the most electrifying track and field athlete on the planet but suffered the brunt of criticism for testing positive for marijuana back in 2021. Since winning the 2023 U.S. Track and Field Championships in the 100ms, Sha’Carri Richardson showed and proved at the 2023 World Athletic Championships in Budapest that she’s back to reclaim that lost momentum.
Starring in her first World Championships meet, Sha’Carri Richardson, 23, joined defending champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Shericka Jackson, and Marie-Josée Ta Lou in advancing in their 100-meter heats on Sunday (August 20). With today’s race, Richardson posted the day’s fastest time of 10.92 seconds, celebrating early before crossing the line in her usual confident fashion. Fraser-Pryce, who some in the sports world consider Richardson’s rival, ran 11.01 in her heat.
In a clip that is starting to go viral, Richardson spoke briefly after her heat and it’s clear that the abrupt fashion that many turned on her after the marijuana violation still rests with her. Richardson was brilliantly candid when asked if she thinks she’s living up to the world’s expectations.
“The world…I’m not worried about the world anymore,” Richardson said, still processing the win and attempting her cool down. “I’ve seen the world be my friend, I’ve seen the world turn one. But at the end of the day, I’ve always been with me. God has always been with me. It’s my time, it’s always been my time.”

Richardson’s next race will be Monday and looks to be the marquee match of the World Championships and a preview of the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Joe Budden and Gillie Da Kid have made their marks as rappers early on and are now dominating the podcast space via their respective spaces. There was a brewing beef between the two outspoken men that is now in the rearview after a new clip of the two surfaced.
Via the Million Dollaz Worth Of Game YouTube page, a video teaser of an upcoming episode featuring Joe Budden was shared with Budden, Gillie, and Wallo chopping it up outside of a home ahead of recording the episode. Whatever bad blood existed between the pair was clearly done with as evidenced by the embrace they shared and Wallo playfully joking on them both for having retired from rapping.

“This is what you look like when you’re two rappers and it’s over. We celebrating the 50th year of Hip Hop, these is two ancient dinosaurs of Hip Hop. This n*gga made $3,700 his whole rap career. Joe probably made about $77,000,” Wallo said in the video, adding he too attempted a career in rapping.
Clips of the forthcoming episode were shared throughout and it looked like the trio were in great spirits. The episode will air Sunday, August 20 at 7:30 PM ET.
The rest of the teaser showed Gillie and Wallo having a dice game showdown with Wallo losing a significant amount of cash.

Joe Budden has a penchant for bringing up controversial topics on his eponymously-named podcast, often to the point he and his co-hosts have passionate debates as a result. One such discussion from an earlier exclusive Patreon episode surfaced online, prompting onlookers to make more of the mock meat beef than there is.
In a previous episode of the DSP version of The Joe Budden Podcast, Budden and co-hosts Ish and Ice discussed if it is appropriate to have a connection with the ex-girlfriend of your friend. In that earlier broadcast, Budden explicitly said that the exes of his friends are off-limits.
However, Ish raised a moment where Budden apparently met with a woman Ish previously dated. While Ish says in the Patreon episode that he actually can’t police the actions of his ex-girlfriend, Budden saw fit to challenge his longtime friend and co-host on that point. Budden brought up a moment where Ish asked him about a conversation Budden had with an ex and it became a classic shouting match between the pair.
This isn’t the first time the pair has clashed on the podcast and probably won’t be the last. Both men have strong opinions and are unafraid to debate the other. What some who commented on the video in question failed to mention in many of their reactions is that the two smoothed things over at the end. Also, the clip that has social media buzzing is months old as well.

Reason, a member of the sprawling Top Dawg Entertainment operation, is prepping for the release of his upcoming album Porches this Friday (August 11). The Carson, Calif. rapper aired out some grievances with TDE, getting into a heated discussion with label co-president Anthony “Mossa” Tiffith Jr. over features that didn’t happen.
Reason was a guest on the BACKONFIGG podcast with hosts T-Rell and Smac. During the chat, the artist born Robert Gill Jr. had plenty to say about the practices of TDE as a label, explaining that features from Latto and EST GEE were lined up but lost due to time.

“We had certain features lined up that could’ve went through,” Reason said. “We had the budget, we had the feature lined up, takes too long to get pushed through, feature price ended up going up or something goes away. Content ideas lined up, not executed. Rollout ideas lined up, not executed.”
He went on to explain that Latto was all but set to go as well as EST GEE but TDE execs held up the process.
“I had Latto lined up for something, not executed. I had EST Gee lined up, not executed. Like, us not pushing through. Features lined up, we got a price set, video and verse for the love, takes too long,” Reason added.
The EST GEE feature in particular jumped in price by $25,000, which apparently would’ve been a huge hit to the album’s marketing budget.
During the interview, Moosa called into the podcast to challenge some of the points made by his artist. Moosa explained that much of what TDE does is a process and kept pointing to the “motion” that TDE artists Ray Vaughn and Doechii have managed to garner as far as fan interest goes.
Moosa then challenged the co-hosts, self-proclaimed fans of their guest, to name 10 Reason songs, which they both failed to do. Also in the call, Moosa explained that former TDE exec Dave Free didn’t want to sign Reason, citing that the rapper gave off, “substitute teacher” vibes.
Reason took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to explain that he’s very much releasing his album on TDE and seemingly wants to remain on the label.
“I appreciate ppl that’s reached out to me. Trust I’m as good as I can be. We’ll have a real convo at some point about what happened, just trust that wasn’t a “rollout move” lol that actually happened! All positive energy as of now moving forward tho! Porches Friday! Love y’all!” he tweeted.
