Meanwhile, Rihanna is officially back in work mode after welcoming a son last year. Earlier this week, the new mom debuted the Savage x Fenty “Game Day” collection of Super Bowl-themed hoodies, joggers, jerseys, tees, hats and more available in brown, black and navy-blue designs.
Rihanna is also nominated for best original song at Tuesday night’s (Jan. 10) Golden Globe Awards for “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever — and that’s not the only big event on her schedule. The 34-year-old singer will headline the Super Bowl halftime show next month, and if “Lift Me Up” snags an Oscar nod, she could potentially perform at the Academy Awards in March too.
Attention, Navy: Rihanna‘s Amazon documentary could be coming out any day now — but of course, the last person who gets to hit the “approve for release” button is the Bad Gal herself.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Thursday (Jan. 5), Peter Berg — director of Friday Night Lights, Lone Survivor and more — gave an update on the long-awaited Rihanna documentary filk that has been more than six years in the making.
According to Berg, the only thing left to do is “waiting for her to approve it. It’s done and sold, and Amazon’s ready.” He continued, “She’s a perfectionist, so we keep adding. It’s been six and a half years of filming, so, yeah, it’s ready to come out. We’re just waiting on her to say, ‘Yeah, let’s do it.’ I don’t know. Maybe it’ll be a 10-year project.”
While it’s possible that the “Work” singer will want to extend the project, Berg is not worried about Rihanna giving the green light. When asked if there were any concerns about the singer not approving the documentary, Berg replied, “Not really.”
The Friday Night Lights director also revealed that he was surprised Rihanna wanted him to direct her documentary film. “When Rihanna asked me to make a doc, I thought she was joking. My work tends to be a bit more masculine, at least on the surface. But this has allowed me to dip in and out of her life while I’m doing other things,” he said. “I’ve loved it — watching her in the studio, seeing her turn Fenty into this billion-dollar entity and, now, being a mom. It’s such an enriching experience, I don’t really care how long it takes.”
News of the documentary first arose in 2016, and by 2019, it was publicized that the documentary sold to Amazon for $25 million. The untitled doc, which will be narrowed down from over 1,200 hours of footage as of 2019, will serve as an unfiltered look into Rihanna’s life and a glimpse into the evolution of one of the world’s most well-known pop artists. Berg and Rihanna previously worked together on Universal’s Battleship.
The Golden Globes revealed its list of jam-packed nominees for the 2023 ceremony on Monday (Dec. 12), and Rihanna, Tems, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Zendaya, Lady Gaga and Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) are among the artists nominated for awards.

As is typical for RiRi, she’s not afraid to get creative. This year, she teamed up again with musical directors Omar Edwards and Adam Blackstone to create a lush musical landscape to capture her brand’s essence. “This year, specifically, the location made it different with being outside in nature,” Edwards tells Billboard of what made this year stand out compared to Savage x Fenty shows of the past. “Also, there was animation added so you’re adding all these different worlds into one things. There’s a live element, there’s scoring film to picture and you’re in nature. All of those things combined made it super unique.”
When asked if the combined landscapes and digital elements made the musical process more challenging, Blackstone laughs that working with a mastermind like Rihanna is “never easy,” as she is always trying to go bigger and better with every fashion show. “She has the power to inspire you to do things that are outside the norm,” he explains.
“Look at the brand, we have all shapes and sizes, all colors, people who are handicapped, some with ailments and she empowers women and men to be their authentic self,” he continues. “For me and Omar, she does the same with us musically. She empowers us to be ourselves and push the envelope. She then supports us so strongly that we feel comfortable trying things and making mistakes and knowing that it’s coming from a place of wanting to see her win because she wants to see the whole team win. The inspiration now is, ‘Yo, we can go on the mountain and do whatever.’ She literally made that happen, got us to the mountain top.”
As for where they see Savage x Fenty fashion shows going in the future, Edwards and Blackstone say that the sky is the limit — literally. “We’ll be in space next time, bro,” Edwards jokes to Blackstone, who responds, “It would not surprise me if we had Vol. 7 on the moon. If anyone can do it, it’s our Rihanna.”
“There are no boundaries when it comes to her and her creativity,” Blackstone adds. “The team that she has assembled, it sounds cliché and churchy, but we know all things are possible when it comes to her. If she has an idea, it pushes us to execute it without limits. I don’t know if we can pinpoint and say ‘This is where it can go’ because it has the ability and the power to go anywhere.”
Savage x Fenty Vol. 4 is now streaming on Prime Video.

The song is featured on the soundtrack of the Marvel sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and was written as a tribute to the late Panther star Chadwick Boseman, who died from colon cancer in 2020 at age 43. Tems, Oscar winner Ludwig Göransson, Rihanna and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler all have writing credits on the track.

Rihanna’s long-awaited return yields an immediate chart-topper as “Lift Me Up” debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart dated Nov. 12. The single, from the soundtrack to the Marvel Studios/Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, gives the superstar her eighth champ on the list.
“Lift” traces its arrival on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, which combines streaming, sales and radio airplay, to 22.6 million official U.S. streams in the week ending Nov. 3, according to Luminate. The sum sparks a No. 1 start on R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs to secure Rihanna’s fifth career leader there. In the same period, the track sold 23,000 downloads and opens at No. 2 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales list. On the airplay front, “Lift” registered 42.6 million in radio audience across all formats. (All airplay, regardless of genre format, contributes to a song’s rank on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.)
The new champ gives Rihanna her eighth No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, and her first in more than five years. Here’s a recap of her collection:
Song Title, Artist (if other than Rihanna), Weeks at No. 1, Reached at No. 1“Take a Bow,” one, Aug. 30, 2008“Diamonds,” 14, Oct. 20, 2012“The Monster,” Eminem featuring Rihanna, 13, Nov. 16, 2013“FourFiveSeconds,” with Ye & Paul McCartney, seven, Feb. 21, 2015“Work,” featuring Drake, 11, Feb. 13, 2016“Needed Me,” two, Sept. 24, 2016“Wild Thoughts,” DJ Khaled featuring Rihanna & Bryson Tiller, seven, July 29, 2017“Lift Me Up,” one (to date), Nov. 12, 2022
Elsewhere, “Lift Me Up,” likewise debuts at No. 1 on the Hot R&B Songs chart, where the superstar lands her sixth champ. The achievement extends her record as the female artist with the most No. 1s on the list, which began in 2012. Overall, Rihanna ranks third in the count, behind The Weeknd (nine) and Drake (seven).
On the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, “Lift” enters at No. 2.
Echoing its strong out-of-the-gate streaming and sales placements, the song also remains a force on multiple radio genre formats after the first full tracking week, which runs Monday – Sunday, following the song’s Oct. 28 release. It ascends 27-16 on Rhythmic Airplay, 24-18 on Adult Pop Airplay, 25-20 on Pop Airplay and 26-22 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay. Plus, it repeats at No. 17 on Adult Contemporary.

Taylor Swift‘s “Anti-Hero” spends a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. A week earlier, it debuted at the summit, as Swift made history as the first artist to claim the survey’s entire top 10 in a single frame.
Meanwhile, Rihanna roars onto the Hot 100 at No. 2 with “Lift Me Up.” The song is her 32nd top 10 and first since 2017.
The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data. All charts (dated Nov. 12, 2022) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (Nov. 8). For all chart news, you can follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.
In the Oct. 28-Nov. 3 tracking week, “Anti-Hero,” released on Republic Records, tallied 35.6 million streams (down 40%), 37.6 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 17%) and 17,000 sold (up 28%, good for top Sales Gainer honors, aided by the availability of its instrumental version in Swift’s webstore Nov. 3), according to Luminate.
The single posts a second week atop the Streaming Songs chart; jumps 9-4 on Digital Song Sales; and dips 13-14 on Radio Songs. (As previously reported, this week’s Billboard airplay charts are the first using Mediabase-monitored data; this week’s Radio Songs chart incorporates data from former monitoring service BDS for Oct. 28-30 and from Mediabase for Oct. 31-Nov. 3, with Mediabase data to power the survey going forward).
Swift scores four songs in the latest Hot 100’s top 10, with “Anti-Hero” followed by “Lavender Haze” (2-6), “Midnight Rain” (5-7) and “Bejeweled” (6-9). Each song (and all 10 of her top 10s a week earlier) is from her new LP Midnights, which logs a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
Rihanna blasts back to the Hot 100 as “Lift Me Up” debuts at No. 2 with 48.1 million in radio audience, 26.2 million streams and 23,000 sold in its first week, following its Oct. 28 release.
The ballad begins as Rihanna’s 32nd Hot 100 top 10, the fifth-most in the chart’s history.
Most Billboard Hot 100 Top 10s:59, Drake40, Taylor Swift38, Madonna34, The Beatles32, Rihanna30, Michael Jackson29, Elton John28, Mariah Carey28, Stevie Wonder27, Janet Jackson26, Justin Bieber25, Lil Wayne25, Elvis Presley (with the start of Presley’s career having predated the Hot 100’s inception)
Rihanna earns her first Hot 100 top 10 since 2017, when DJ Khaled’s “Wild Thoughts,” on which she and Bryson Tiller are featured, peaked at No. 2 for seven weeks that July-September. She first reached the top 10 with her debut hit “Pon De Replay,” which rose to No. 2 in July 2005. She boasts 14 No. 1s, the third-most after The Beatles’ 20 and Mariah Carey’s 19.
With “Lift Me Up,” Rihanna ties her best career Hot 100 entrance, and makes her best arrival as a lead artist, after Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie,” on which she’s featured, debuted at No. 2 in July 2010 (and went on to reign for seven weeks).
“Lift Me Up” soars in at No. 2 on Streaming Songs, No. 3 on Digital Song Sales and No. 6 on Radio Songs. Notably, the song makes just the fourth top 10 Radio Songs start since the chart became an all-genre ranking in December 1998, after Adele’s “Easy on Me” (No. 4, 2021); Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” (No. 6, 2011); and Janet Jackson’s “All for You” (No. 9, 2001).
Rihanna adds her 36th top 10 on Digital Song Sales, her record-extending 30th on Radio Songs (ahead of runner up Drake with 24) and her 15th on Streaming Songs. (Helping the song’s sales start, its original and instrumental versions were made available in Rihanna’s webstore Nov. 2, while original and instrumental options with two alternate covers arrived Nov. 3.)
The single also opens at No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot R&B Songs charts, which use the same methodology as the Hot 100. Rihanna adds her eighth leader on the former list (dating to her first, “Take a Bow,” in 2008) and her sixth on the latter (which began in 2012). She had last topped both tallies with “Wild Thoughts” in 2017.
“Lift Me Up” is from the soundtrack, released Nov. 4, to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, due in theaters this Friday (Nov. 11).
Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ “Unholy” rebounds 11-3 on the Hot 100, two weeks after it ascended to No. 1, with 40.8 million in airplay audience (up 53%, as it wins the Hot 100’s top Airplay Gainer award), 25.1 million streams (up 3%) and 12,000 sold (up 3%).
Steve Lacy’s fellow former Hot 100 leader “Bad Habits” jumps 12-4. The track concurrently tops the multi-metric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs, Hot Rock Songs and Hot Alternative Songs charts for an 11th week each.
Harry Styles’ “As It Was” pushes 16-5 on the Hot 100, after 15 weeks at No. 1 – the fourth-longest reign in the chart’s history. It claims its 30th week in the top 10, becoming just the third song to reach the milestone, and rules Radio Songs for a 12th frame (60.2 million, up 2%).
Elsewhere in the Hot 100’s top 10, Post Malone’s “I Like You (A Happier Song),” featuring Doja Cat, climbs 17-8, after reaching No. 3, and Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl” charges 22-10, after it opened atop the Aug. 27 chart, as it tops the multi-metric Hot Rap Songs tally for an 11th week.
