Last week, the Apollo theater in Harlem was selected as the first venue to receive a Kennedy Center Honor. The Apollo will receive a special award as an iconic American institution, right alongside the four individuals who are being honored — Bonnie Raitt; Grateful Dead; jazz trumpeter, pianist, and composer Arturo Sandoval; and filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola.
The prestigious honors will be presented on Dec. 8 at a ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. CBS will broadcast the two-hour program on Dec. 23.

“The Apollo, one of the most consequential, influential institutions in history, has elevated the voices of Black entertainment in New York City, nationally, and around the world, and launched the careers of legions of artists,” Kennedy Center chairman David M. Rubenstein said in a statement announcing the surprise selection.
This is a rare occasion that the Kennedy Center Honors has veered from its usual practice of honoring individuals. Six years ago, the program honored four key creators of the Broadway sensation Hamilton: An American Musical (Lin-Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail, Alex Lacamoire, and Andy Blankenbuehler). Five years ago, it honored the legendary children’s TV program Sesame Street (the award was presented to the show’s creators, Lloyd Morrisett and Joan Ganz Cooney).
It’s easy to see why the Kennedy Center chose the Apollo to receive this honor. For 90 years, The Apollo has been a beacon of the Harlem community; a platform for artists from the worlds of jazz, swing, bebop, R&B, gospel, blues, soul, and hip-hop. Artists who have played The Apollo’s famed Amateur Night include Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Luther Vandross, H.E.R., D’Angelo, Lauryn Hill and Miri Ben-Ari.
Now that The Apollo has gotten the nod, what other venues would you like the Kennedy Center Honors to consider for recognition? Here are 20 choices, in alphabetical order:

Jimin first announced Muse in June, with BigHit Music writing in a statement that the album would showcase his “expanded musical spectrum.” “Following his first solo album, ‘Face,’ where he sought to explore his true identity, ‘Muse’ documents his journey in search of the source of his inspiration,” the release continued.

The project features collaborations with Loco and Sofia Carson, with the K-pop icon experimenting with bold new sounds and styles throughout. The set follows 2023’s Face, which reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
Jimin first made his solo debut in 2018, when he dropped the single “Promise.” Five years later, he became the first South Korean soloist to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Like Crazy.”
Muse is just one of a few projects that Jimin has been working on amid his time in the South Korean military, in which all of his BTS bandmates — except for Jin, who finished his enlistment in June — are currently serving.
Jimin is also gearing up to release a docu-series titled Are You Sure?! with Jung Kook chronicling the two friends’ travels through parts of their home country, the U.S. and Japan.
Trailing behind Muse on this week’s poll is Stray Kids’ mini-album Ate, with 27% of the vote. The eight-member K-pop group dropped the project two months after the arrival of their Charlie Puth-assisted single “Lose My Breath,” marking the group’s third single of 2024.

Childish Gambino bid farewell with his final album, Bando Stone & The New World. There are some special guests peppered throughout the 17-track LP with assists from Jorja Smith, Yeat, Flo Milli, Steve Lacy, Foushee, Amaarae and more. “I always knew Childish Gambino was like a character, and on some level I wanted it to end,” he explained on Hot Ones. “I almost feel like Childish Gambino is like the boss from The Office, like, ‘That stuff worked 10 years ago.’ All that stuff worked, but now it’s like a different thing. It’s like, ‘Oh it’s a little sad, but its like, wow, the cycle kinda continues, which is great, I think.’”
From ends to beginnings, both Joe Jonas and Jade Thirlwall released solo songs outside of the Jonas Brothers and Little Mix, respectively. Thirlwall dropped “Angel of My Dreams,” while Joe Jonas unveiled “Work It Out,” the lead single from his upcoming album, Music for People Who Believe in Love.

Romance: Untold “marks the beginning of a new chapter for ENHYPEN. Usher got his flowers at the 2024 BET Awards on Sunday, June 30, receiving their lifetime achievement award. The award has been presented in all but one year since the show started in 2001. (There was no recipient in 2020, the year the COVID-19 pandemic nearly brought awards shows to a standstill.)
Whitney Houston was the inaugural BET lifetime achievement award winner in 2001. She was just 37 at the time, rather young for an award of this nature, but, as it turned out, it’s a good thing she got it when she did. She died unexpectedly in 2012.
Eight winners of the BET lifetime achievement award have also received Kennedy Center Honors, arguably the top “lifetime achievement award” given to entertainers. Those double winners are Earth, Wind & Fire, James Brown, Gladys Knight, Diana Ross, Al Green, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson and Queen Latifah.

Most, but not all, of the BET lifetime achievement awards have also won Grammy Awards in competition. The BET honored six acts who, for whatever reason, have yet to win a competitive Grammy. They are Diana Ross, The O’Jays, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Charlie Wilson, New Edition and Busta Rhymes.
The BET’s 2006 lifetime achievement award went to actor Samuel L. Jackson. That was the year Prince died, and the show had five separate segments honoring the music legend. A lifetime achievement award to another music star would have easily been overshadowed by all the love shown to Prince, so the show pivoted and honored an actor instead. (Prince had received BET’s lifetime achievement award in 2010.)
Other BET lifetime achievement award honorees, not already mentioned in this story, are The Isley Brothers, Chaka Khan, Patti La Belle, Anita Baker, Mary J. Blige and Sean “Diddy” Combs.
Looking at that roster of past honorees, you may wonder “who’s left to receive this award in future”? Quite a few people, as it turns out. Here’s a list of 25 leading candidates for lifetime achievement awards at the BET Awards. All are still living. (The BET has yet to present a lifetime achievement award posthumously.) All have been active for 20 years or more.
The list includes legends whose careers date back to the late 1950s or early 1960s, such as Jerry Butler, Dionne Warwick and Stevie Wonder, as well as a few stars who broke through in the early 2000s – Alicia Keys, T.I. and Kanye West/Ye.
Of these 25 leading candidates for lifetime achievement awards at the BET Awards, who would you most like to see get the honor?

LISA went to her native Thailand to shoot the dance-heavy music video, taking over the streets of Bangkok for the shoot. The clip features Thai transgender influencers Chinnawat Promsri, Bruze Kachi-sarah and Aëffy.
Trailing behind “Rockstar” on this week’s poll is the “other” category, with 16% of the vote, followed by Camila Cabello’s fourth studio album, C,XOXO, which brought in nearly 5% of the vote.
