Jung Kook & Latto’s ‘Seven’ Adds Fifth Week at No. 1 on Billboard Global Charts

Jung Kook’s “Seven,” featuring Latto, notches a fifth week at No. 1 on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts (dated Aug. 26). Four weeks earlier, the song became the first leader on the lists for a member of BTS as a soloist.

Also on the Global 200, Oliver Anthony Music’s viral hit “Rich Men North of Richmond” – new at No. 1 on the U.S.-based Billboard Hot 100 – and Olivia Rodrigo’s “Bad Idea Right?” launch at Nos. 2 and 7, respectively.

On Global Excl. U.S., V’s “Love Me Again” debuts at No. 6 and “Rainy Days” begins at No. 8, as he becomes the fifth member of BTS to have hit the chart’s top 10 solo.

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts, which began in September 2020, rank songs based on streaming and sales activity culled from more than 200 territories around the world, as compiled by Luminate. The Global 200 is inclusive of worldwide data and the Global Excl. U.S. chart comprises data from territories excluding the United States.

Chart ranks are based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of audio and video music services, as well as download sales, the latter of which reflect purchases from full-service digital music retailers from around the world, with sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites excluded from the charts’ calculations.

‘Seven’ Adds 5th Week Atop Global 200

Jung Kook’s “Seven,” featuring Latto, claims a fifth week at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200, with 104.3 million streams (down 7%) and 4,000 sold (down 9%) worldwide Aug. 11-17.

The song is just the second of 2023 to debut atop the Global 200 and spend at least its first five weeks at No. 1, after Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” tallied its first six weeks on the chart at the summit beginning in January.

Oliver Anthony Music’s breakout hit “Rich Men North of Richmond” debuts at No. 2 on the Global 200. Officially released Aug. 11, the song by the Farmville, Va.-based singer-songwriter drew 20.2 million streams and sold 156,000 worldwide through Aug. 17.

Notably, and not unexpectedly, given the song’s lyrical focus on Anthony’s take on the current state of America, the bulk of its consumption – 88% of its streams and 95% of its sales – was domestic in its opening week; the song totaled 2.8 million streams and sold 9,000 outside the U.S., and does not make the Global Excl. U.S. chart.

Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” returns to its No. 3 Global 200 high, from No. 5, while two songs from the Barbie soundtrack, Barbie: The Album, round out the top five: Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?,” down to No. 4 from its No. 2 high, and Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night,” which dips to No. 5 from its No. 3 best.

Elsewhere, Olivia Rodrigo’s “Bad Idea Right?” debuts at No. 7 on the Global 200, with 43.5 million streams and 5,000 sold worldwide. Rodrigo scores her sixth top 10, and second from her second LP, Guts (due Sept. 8), after “Vampire” bowed in July as her third No. 1.

BTS’ Jung Kook & V in Global Excl. U.S. Top 10

Jung Kook’s “Seven,” featuring Latto, concurrently crowns the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart for a fifth week, with 95.1 million streams (down 7%) and 3,000 sold (down 4%) outside the U.S. Aug. 11-17.

As on the Global 200, the song is only the second this year to begin atop Global Excl. U.S. and spend at least its first five weeks at No. 1, following Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” (six weeks, starting in January).

Myke Towers’ “LaLa” keeps at No. 2 on Global Excl. U.S., after it led the list for a week in July; Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” holds at its No. 3 high; Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” repeats at its No. 4 best; and NewJeans’ “Super Shy” is steady at No. 5, after reaching No. 2.

Also in the Global Excl. U.S. top 10, V’s “Love Me Again” and “Rainy Days” debut at Nos. 6 and 8, respectively. The former starts with 37.3 million streams and 19,000 sold outside the U.S., the latter, with 36 million streams and 18,000 sold.

V becomes the fifth member of BTS to hit the Global Excl. U.S. top 10 solo. Here’s a recap, ranked by peak position, of BTS members’ 11 top 10s (including one No. 1) on the chart outside the group – with BTS having tallied 11 top 10s (including seven No. 1s) on the survey:

  • “Seven,” Jung Kook feat. Latto, No. 1 (five weeks to date), July 2023
  • “Like Crazy,” Jimin, No. 2, April 2023
  • “Left and Right,” Charlie Puth feat. Jung Kook, No. 2, July 2022
  • “That That,” PSY feat. SUGA, No. 2, May 2022
  • “Dreamers (Music From the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022),” Jung Kook, No. 4, December 2022
  • “Love Me Again,” V, No. 6 (to date), August 2023
  • “The Astronaut,” Jin, No. 6, November 2022
  • “Rainy Days,” V, No. 8 (to date), August 2023
  • “Set Me Free, Pt. 2,” Jimin, No. 8, April 2023
  • “Stay Alive,” Jung Kook, No. 8, February 2022
  • “Vibe,” TAEYANG feat. Jimin, No. 9, January 2023

Demi Lovato Splits With Manager Scooter Braun

Demi Lovato is seeking new management after splitting with manager Scooter Braun last month, sources tell Billboard.

Lovato signed with Braun and his SB Projects firm in 2019. She was previously managed by Phil McIntyre of PhilyMack.

One source close to the situation says it was time for Lovato to go in a new direction, even though she was thankful for her time with SB Projects. She does not yet have new management, though conversations are taking place.

Reps for Lovato and Braun declined to comment.

Lovato has released two albums since signing with Braun: 2021’s Dancing with the Devil… the Art of Starting Over, which hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and last years’ pop-punk Holy Fvck, which scored a No. 7 on the chart. Since the start of her career in 2008, Lovato has charted 36 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, four of which went top 10. All eight of her studio albums debuted within the top 10 of the Billboard 200, with 2009’s Here We Go Again entering at No. 1.

On Sept. 18, Lovato will release Demi Lovato Revamped, which includes reworked rock versions of her biggest hits including “Heart Attack,” “Sorry Not Sorry” featuring Slash, “Cool For the Summer” and more.

Upon signing to SB Projects, Lovato shared on Instagram: “Dreams came true today for me…Couldn’t be happier, inspired and excited to begin this next chapter with you Scooter!!! Thank you for believing in me and for being apart of this new journey.” (All of Lovato’s pre-2022 posts have since been wiped).

Scooter shared on his Instagram at the time: “She is a special person and a special talent. I’m… we.. are honored. Welcome to the family Demi.”

SB Project’s artist roster currently includes longtime clients Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande, among others. Following a report Friday that Bieber was looking to leave SB, reps for both parties told Billboard that such “rumors” were “not true.”

J Balvin, who also signed with Braun in 2019, left in May and is now managed by Roc Nation.

Red Light Ventures, Firebird Music Acquire Over 350 Songs From Tape Room Publishing

Tape Room Music has entered a strategic partnership with Red Light Ventures and Firebird Music, which purchased more than 350 songs from various Tape Room Publishing catalogs as part of the transaction. The catalog sale includes “Body Like a Back Road” (recorded by Sam Hunt), “Do I Make You Wanna” (Billy Currington), “Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset” (Luke Bryan), “One of Them Girls” (Lee Brice) and “Thinking ‘Bout You” (Dustin Lynch featuring MacKenzie Porter).

In 2017, “Body Like a Back Road” reached the top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and spent 34 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart. In 2021, “Thinking ‘Bout You” spent six weeks atop the Country Airplay chart.

In June, Firebird acquired a stake in Red Light Management.

Since songwriter Ashley Gorley launched Tape Room Music in 2011, the publishing house has earned three Grammy nominations, three CMA song of the year nominations and many ASCAP and BMI Awards. Most recently, Tape Room songwriter Hunter Phelps earned nominations for songwriter of the year and song of the year for HARDY’s “Wait in the Truck” (featuring Lainey Wilson) at this year’s ACM Awards, while Phelps and fellow Tape Room songwriters Zach Crowell and Ben Johnson earned CMA Triple Play Awards.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with two of the most successful, forward-thinking companies in our industry,” said Tape Room Music president Blain Rhodes in a statement.

“We are excited to partner with Ashley and the world-class team at Tape Room,” added Red Light founder Coran Capshaw.

Tape Room was represented by Loeb & Loeb LLC, with Loeb attorneys Derek Crownover, John Rolfe, Megan Pekar and Willie Jones handling the transaction. Red Light and Firebird were represented by Elliot Groffman of Carroll Guido Groffman.

The Chainsmokers Break L.A. Historic Park Attendance Record at First ‘Party Never Ends’ Show

Hurricane who? L.A. may have been bracing for Hurricane Hilary, but it was The Chainsmokers who brought the action Saturday, as the DJ duo kicked off the inaugural edition of their “The Party Never Ends” show.

The Chainsmokers Alex Pall Drew Taggart

The Chainsmokers’ Artist-in-Residence Program Will Cover a Year of Rent for an Emerging Artist…

Billed as a “day-long celebration of inclusivity, collaboration and just plain f–ing fun,” Saturday’s show brought out 18,798 people to Los Angeles State Historic Park, breaking the venue’s all-time attendance record. The incoming storm held off for the night, as the crowd partied to The Chainsmokers’ biggest hits under open skies and fireworks.

The Chainsmokers were joined by Two Friends — who brought out Bebe Rexha for their Loud Luxury collab “If Only” — along with opening acts ARMNHMR, NOTD and DJ Press Play.

The Chainsmokers took to the stage as the sun went down, joined by surprise guests Maluma, Shenseea, 347Aidan and Carlie Hanson, who all performed their recent collaborations with the dance music duo. As their two-hour set came to an end, the guys debuted their new track “Summertime Friends” for the first time live. The song is expected to be featured on The Chainsmokers’ upcoming fifth studio album, the follow-up to last year’s So Far So Good.

For The Chainsmokers — Alex Pall and Drew Taggart — Saturday’s show was a chance to finally curate their own festival-style experience for their fans. While the guys will play upward of 200 shows around the world this year, Pall and Taggart say “The Party Never Ends” allows them to bring their music — and their friends — all in one place.

In an Instagram post, the duo called Saturday’s show, “Our most special show we’ve ever done,” adding, “We hope to do this every year with you all.”

Pall and Taggart head to Colorado next, bringing “The Party Never Ends” to Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Sept. 2 (find tickets here).

It’s a busy fall for the group, who also just launched an “artist in residence” program to help cover a year of rent and studio time for an emerging musician in New York City.

These 10 tracks from artists including Renée Rap, aespa, Alana Springsteen and Land of Talk will get you energized to take on the week. Pop any of these gems into your personal playlists — or scroll to the end of the post for a custom playlist of all 10.

Renée Rapp, “Pretty Girls”

“This conversation’s classic / I can predict this s–t, line by line / I like a straight jacket / But it feels like it’s a little tight,” Renée Rapp sings on “Pretty Girls,” the most cleverly satisfying track on just-released debut album Snow Angel. “Pretty Girls” gestures at acoustic singer-songwriter production before speeding up to an electro-pop hook, but Rapp’s wordplay sizzles within both sounds, as she tries to navigate women who want to sexually experiment without any emotional understanding. – J.L.

Promiseland, “Bad Days”

Promiseland may be signed to Julian Casablancas’ label, Cult Records, and the Strokes leader may make a cameo in the music video to new track “Bad Days,” but the lead single to the band’s forthcoming debut album recalls the atmospheric eeriness of Joy Division more than any garage rock revival tune. “Bad Days” moves with ghostly purpose, the skittering beats pushing the verses downhill before the chorus reaches skyward. – J.L.

Moyka, “Perfect Movie Scene”

“Perfect Movie Scene” does not possess a discernible chorus; instead, Norwegian artist Moyka presents a few types of refrains over shuddering electronics and nearly five minutes, sprinting down a winding pathway of ideas concerning idealized romance. The momentum gathers as “Perfect Movie Scene” continues until a dance floor climax arrives, and Moyka wisely lets the moment breathe, understanding that sometimes the most impactful sequence doesn’t need a catchy hook. – J.L.

Sadie Jean, “16”

Sadie Jean’s new single “16” is defined by the same gentleness that we often use to reminisce about simpler pieces of our youth: the singer-songwriter’s voice never rises above an amiable warble, but it never needs to while she reflects on teenage memories of girl talk, parking in a parent’s car and childhood bedrooms feeling smaller than they once were. Jean impressed on past singles like “WYD Now” and “Locksmith,” but “16” showcases her most nuanced performance to date. – J.L.

Margaret Glaspy, “Get Back”

Echo the Diamond, Margaret Glaspy’s third full-length released last week, is defined by the singer-songwriter’s unfussy view of reality, each tweaked guitar string and weary-yet-hopeful lyric steeped in the California native’s reality. “Get Back” is highlighted by that uncompromising point of view: as she insists on returning to herself amidst immense loss, Glaspy holds nothing back, each production blemish adding character to a rugged song that will get stuck in your head. – J.L.

Alana Springsteen, “Amen”

“Amen” is the final song on Alana Springsteen’s 18-track debut album Twenty Something, and its placement at the end of a 53-minute project gives the anthem an extra sense of gravity, as if the lessons learned across the first 17 tracks have led to the self-realization of who she is and what she wants. “I don’t need a happy ending,” Springsteen declares, her voice rising as she apologizes to those who wanted her to follow a safer path — and in its power, demonstrating why she couldn’t choose that option. – J.L.

Jake Scott, “Come Close”

Jake Scott’s “Come Close” flirts with piano balladry, settles into synth-pop verses, and scoops up some echoing percussion midway through, but really, the single represents the singer-songwriter’s plain-spoken plea for fully unguarded connection with the one he loves. Scott has collaborated and toured with country musicians in the past, but “Come Close” is straightforward, sumptuous pop music, and Scott shines in that medium. – J.L.

Land of Talk, “Your Beautiful Self”

About a minute and 10 seconds into Land of Talk’s new single “Your Beautiful Self,” Lizzie Powell’s vocal approach changes, their lower tone climbing onto a raised platform and escaping the shadows of the piano and drums. It’s a special moment within the influential Canadian project’s grand return — new album Performances will be released in October — and Powell stays in that register through the rest of the song, their voice a reminder of Land of Talk’s hypnotic appeal. – J.L.

aespa, “Better Things”

With just a few dates into the girl group’s North American tour, aespa delighted MYs with the release of new track “Better Things.” Equal parts summer kiss-off and chill breakup anthem, the song sees the K-pop stars experimenting outside of their spellbinding universe to dabble in tropical house vibes. Karina, NingNing, Winter and Giselle ultimately shrug off a romance shrouded in doubt in favor for protecting their peace — and the end result is intoxicating. – S.B.

The Drums, “Isolette”

The Drums’ Jonny Pierce leans into the emotional wounds of his past on new track, “Isolette.” Inspired by his mother’s traumatic birthing experience and the strained relationship they had as a result, Pierce allows himself to be vulnerable about his personal shortcomings, from being incapable of loving another properly to feeling paralyzed at the thought of making a mistake. Plucky, slightly upbeat guitar work shows that while Pierce is not fully past his issues, he continues to cope and often returns to the solitude from which he came. – S.B.

Here Are 5 Things You Didn’t Know About Jon Batiste | Billboard

Jon Batiste reveals five things you didn’t know about him to Billboard.

Jon Batiste:
Hello, I’m Jon Batiste, and this is five things you might not know about me.

I just learned how to swim last year. Still working on it. But I know how to swim now.

I was a basketball national champion before I was a jazz musician before I became a artist in high school.

I love love, love listening to the Spice Girls. It’s an amazing group.

I always put my albums out based upon people in my life and markers in time. For instance, like my last album was my maternal grandmother’s birthday. The next album will be my grandfather’s birthday.

My first instrument when I started playing music — before the piano, before even the drums — was the bongos, and I had a set of bongos that you could put right here in your lap. And I would play those and I only knew one pattern, and I played that same pattern for two years.

And those are five things you didn’t know about me … I hope.

Jack Antonoff Signs With Universal Music Publishing Group

Producer extraordinaire and Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff has signed an exclusive, global publishing agreement with Universal Music Publishing Group. The move follows his weekend wedding and reunites him with UMPG executive vp Jennifer Knoepfle, his longtime publishing A&R during the songwriter’s lengthy — and fruitful — stay at Sony Music Publishing.

“Jack is honestly one of one,” noted Knoepfle. “To continue being his publisher is an honor we don’t take for granted. He’s even more creative and prolific than when I first met him over a decade ago – and that’s saying a lot! I look forward to this next chapter for him with UMPG by his side.”

That hard-working ethos has gotten Antonoff far over the years, having collaborated extensively with Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Sia, Florence + The Machine, Tegan and Sara, St. Vincent, The Chicks, Carly Rae Jepsen, Pink, Olivia Rodrigo, FKA Twigs, Spoon, Zayn, Cam, Clairo, The 1975, Kevin Abstract and Sara Bareilles, among many others.

Then there’s Taylor Swift, whom Antonoff calls “the first person who recognized me as a producer.” They first collaborated in 2013 on “Sweeter Than Fiction” from the film One Chance, and have since gone on to produce Billboard 200-topping records 1989 (2014), Reputation (2017), Lover (2019), Folklore (2020), Evermore (2020), Fearless (Taylor’s Version) (2021), Red (Taylor’s Version) (2021), Midnights (2022) and Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) (2023).

Antonoff has been rewarded with eight Grammy Awards, including back-to-back producer of the year nods in 2022-2023.

As a performing artist, Antonoff rose to prominence in the early 2010s as the guitarist and multi-instrumentalist in Fun., who scored hits with “We Are Young,” “Carry On” and the title cut off the band’s second album, Some Nights. He later formed Bleachers, whose hits include “I Wanna Get Better” and “Don’t Take the Money,” among others.
