for King & Country, Tasha Cobbs Leonard & Brandon Lake Among GMA Dove Awards Performers

The 54th annual GMA Dove Awards will feature a slate of some of the year’s biggest Contemporary Christian and Gospel music hitmakers.

for King & Country, Brandon Lake, Katy Nichole, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Miel San Marcos and Zach Williams with Walker Hayes are the initial round of performers revealed to be taking the stage at Lipscomb University’s Allen Arena in Nashville, where the show will be taped Oct. 17. Tauren Wells was previously announced as the host of this year’s show.

Lake leads nominations with 11 nods, including artist of the year, and three nominations in the song of the year category. Over the past year, he topped the Christian Airplay chart with his solo song “Gratitude,” currently in the top five on that chart with “Praise You Anywhere,” and earned a top 10 Christian Airplay hit with the Brooke Ligertwood duet “Honey in the Rock,” and No. 11 as part of Maverick City Music’s “Fear Is Not My Future,” also featuring Chandler Moore.

for King & Country is up for artist of the year, as well as for pop/contemporary recorded song of the year alongside Jordin Sparks for “Love Me Like I Am,” which spent two weeks atop the Christian Airplay chart earlier this year. The sibling duo is currently in the top 10 on the Christian Airplay chart with “What Are We Waiting For?,” the title track of their latest album.

Cobbs Leonard has three nominations: gospel worship album of the year (for Hymns (Live)), traditional gospel recorded song of the year (“It Is Well”) and gospel worship recorded song of the year (“The Moment (Live)”). Earlier this year, she earned a two-week Gospel Airplay No. 1 with “The Moment,” and a top 10 Hot Gospel Songs hit with the Lecrae collaboration “Your Power.”

Nichole is nominated for new artist of the year, while her “In Jesus Name (God of Possible)” is up for song of the year. “God Is in This Story,” her collaboration with Big Daddy Weave, is up for pop/contemporary recorded song of the year. Her album Jesus Changed My Life is also nominated for pop/contemporary album of the year. She is currently in the top 5 on the Billboard Christian Airplay chart with “Hold On.”

Williams, known for hits including “Old Church Choir,” will team with “Fancy Like” hitmaker Walker Hayes for a performance, presumably a rendition of their collaboration “Jesus’ Fault,” which is up for bluegrass/country/roots recorded song of the year.

Miel San Marcos is nominated for Spanish Language recorded song of the year, for “Coritos (En Vivo).” Meanwhile, Miel San Marcos Kids is nominated for children’s recorded song of the year for “Danzo En El Rio.”

Tickets for the GMA Dove Awards‘ Oct. 17 taping at Allen Arena have already sold out. The awards show will air exclusively on TBN and the TBN App on Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. ET and 10 p.m. ET, with an audio simulcast airing on SiriusXM. Encore presentations of the broadcast will air on TBN on Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. ET and 10 p.m. ET.

Paramore to Revisit ‘This Is Why’ With ‘Almost’ Remix Album

Paramore are feeling nostalgic about their most recent album, This Is Why. Which is why they are releasing a remix album featuring new versions of the songs from their sixth LP, which came out in February.

On Monday (Oct. 2), the band announced Re: This Is Why, which will drop on Friday (Oct. 6). While a track listing has not yet been revealed, in an Instagram post revealing the project, they explained, “We’ve long wanted to recognize the connection we have with some of the artists who’ve influenced us as a band and/or who have cited our band as an influence.”

They then, kind of, explained what fans can expect, saying that the Re: This Is Why re-imagining is “almost” a remix album. “Some of the songs have been remixed sort of classically, while others were reworked or rewritten. It’s incredible to hear all our worlds colliding,” they wrote. The comments section featured a tease of “+1 b-side,” which seemed to suggest the original 10-song album will be augmented by an extra track.

The news brought out a number of celebratory comments from some fellow artists, including Camila Cabello, who wrote simply, “harddddd,” while Remi Wolf gave it a heart emoji and the Linda Lindas tossed up four newspaper headline emoji. The big news came after the group posted a Notes app screen last week teasing three dates: something else titled “This Is Why” slated to arrive on Sept. 28, something titled “Why Is This?” due out on Oct. 2 and “Is This Why?” on Oct. 6.

The original This is Why marked the return of Hayley Williams, Zac Farro and Taylor York’s after a hiatus and their first album since 2017’s After Laughter. The band was forced to pull the plug on the final two dates of their U.S. tour in August after Williams was hit with a nasty lung infection.

In an Aug. 28 post, Williams first hinted that some fresh tracks might be in the offing, writing, “We’ve been off the road for a couple of weeks now…mainly in LA. Thankfully got some down time but we put some work in too. It felt good to get back into a studio. More of that once we get home to Nashville… Zac and Taylor and I also just want to get back to making things. Not only the creative process but the layer(s) of insulation that can come with the creative process.”

Soulman Mac Royals Scores Four-Chair Turn With ‘Beautiful’ John Mayer Cover on ‘The Voice’

The Blind auditions are rumbling along on NBC‘s The Voice, and, on Monday night (Oct. 2), one particular contestant got tongues wagging.

Hailing from Wrightsville, Arkansas, Mac Royals stepped into the spotlight and showed he’s in the right place. With a voice coated in caramel, Mac covered John Mayer’s “Gravity,” and was an immediate with the judges. All of them.

Royals has a vision to “build a bridge” from the industry to Arkansas, a place lacking in opportunities for talent. “I want to be there personally to help them, so I’m here doing what I can,” he explained.

Don’t bet against him.

Prior to hitting the stage, Royals remarked: “I hope the coaches can hear my heart and not just my voice,” and that “they can feel the pain in the song that I’m about to deliver, and that’s what’s going to make them turn around.”

Niall Horan didn’t hesitate, as he turned first. John Legend closely followed, then Gwen Stefani, with Reba McEntire bringing up the rear — for a four-chair turn.

“Wow, that was such a beautiful rendition of that song,” Legend later remarked. “You made us forget about the original and just think about who is this person and I was so moved by your performance.” Legend wasted no time in presenting his pitch.

“You have this incredible gifted voice,” explained Stefani. “You weren’t trying got show off your voice, you were showing off you. And your heart. And that was beautiful.”

It was “off the scale, it was amazing,” Horan enthused. “You did everything so well. And brought different variations of your voice, we heard the falsetto, we heard the sick runs in the middle.”

McEntire played the geography card. As an Oklahoman, they’re virtually neighbors. “I had 18 people in my hometown growing up,” she noted, “so I do know about small towns, giving back, helping out.”

The smalltown connection was a winner, as Mac selected Team Reba.

John Mayer Talks Dead & Company, Walking ‘On a Tightrope’ With ‘Solo’ Tour

The writers strike is finally at an end, and the regular roundup of late night TV talkshows are back on our screens. Which means more Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers. More gags and goofs, political insights, and interviews. And, yes, more music.

John Mayer didn’t waste a moment.

Ahead of his fall Solo tour, the seven-time Grammy Award-winning bluesman appeared on two separate shows overnight, for chats, laughs and a performance.

At the restart of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Mayer stopped by for a chat with the host, and for several trips down memory lane.

The rocker recounted the time Fallon’s bandleader Questlove filled in for his drummer on stage at Madison Square Garden. “He was coming to the gig anyway, and somewhere along the line of him coming to the show he got offered to play like six songs,” Mayer remembers. Questlove apparently learned all those songs on the way to the Garden, and delivered the goods for a “magical night.”

At the top of the talk, Mayer took us back in time for his “Crypto Bismol” comedy spot which came to him one night and ended up getting pitched for The Tonight Show.

As its title would suggest, the Solo shows feature Mayer alone with an acoustic guitar on stage – “out there on a tightrope” is how he describes it. “It works,” he tells Fallon, “it’s an opportunity for me to play some of the songs from my career, tell stories around them, and read signs with requests on them and they’ll try to stump me and see if I remember an old song.”

Expect the concerts to be “open-ended and great, and fun, and I’m never quite sure where the show is going to go,” with “turn on a dime” moments. “It’s really exciting.” The format is “the most fun to have finished; you know those shows where they’re really hard when you’re doing them and then when you’re done you’re just so rewarded.”

Mayer is clearly a busy guy. And what do you give a busy person? More work. That’s certainly the case, as Mayer unwraps his new SiriusXM channel, Life. The idea, he explains, is a radio channel that “isn’t genre-based, but plays music for whatever moment you’re most likely to be in during your day or week, your month or even your year.” Life begins in November.

Naturally, Mayer gave late owls a taste of things to come, with a one-man acoustic rendition of “Shouldn’t Matter but It Does,” lifted from his 2021 album Sob Rock.

Not to limit himself, Mayer also dropped in at Watch What Happens Live for a spot on the couch with Andy Cohen.

The questions came hard and fast, some from fans Zooming them in from home.

Among them, will Mayer reunite with Dead & Company (“we will play shows. I have to believe…everyone has it in their hearts to keep playing”), what is the sexiest musical instrument (saxophone), his first celebrity crush (Debbie Gibson), his three-word self-description as a lover (“takes some time”) and his least-favorite album (Paradise Valley – he has reasons).

Mayer’s Solo arena tour kicks off Wednesday, Oct. 3 at the MSG in New York City.

BTS’ Jung Kook and Jack Harlow’s ‘3D’ Challenges For U.K. Chart Crown

BTS star Jung Kook is on track for his high-charting solo single in the U.K. as “3D” makes a bright start.
Based on midweek sales and streaming data published by the Official Charts Company, “3D” (via BigHit Entertainment), which features Louisville rapper Jack Harlow, is set to bow at No. 2, for the week’s highest debut.

“3D,” which leads Billboard’s new music poll this week with 62% of the vote, appears to be closing the gap on the incumbent, Doja Cat’s “Paint the Town Red” (Ministry of Sound). In an earlier update from the OCC, “3D” entered at No. 3, before leapfrogging Kenya Grace’s “Strangers” (FFRR), now appearing likely to dip 2-3 on the national singles tally.

In the meantime, Doja Cat’s hit remains in the box seat for a fifth consecutive week at No. 1 in the U.K.

Jung Kook made U.K. chart history earlier this year with “Seven,” his collaboration with Latto. The track landed at No. 3 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, published July 21, for the highest-charting debut by a solo Korean act.

All seven members of the BTS – Jin, Jimin, Suga, Jung Kook, RM, V and J-Hope – have shared solo material.

First, bandmate j-hope set the mark with his J. Cole collaboration “On The Street,” peaking at No. 37 in the U.K. Then Jimin bettered it, nabbing his own top 40 appearance with “Set Me Free Pt. 2” (No. 30 peak). Jimin then reset the bar with a top 10 for “Like Crazy,” peaking at No. 8 in March.

If “3D” holds its spot, or goes one better, it would give Jung Kook a higher U.K. chart position than any single released by BTS. The K-pop phenomenon has a peak of No. 3 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, achieved on three occasions – with 2020’s “Dynamite,” plus “Butter” and “My Universe” with Coldplay (both from 2021).

The next-best debut on the U.K. chart should belong to Ed Sheeran, with “American Town” forecast to debut at No. 23, and “Magical” poised to enter at No. 37, for what would be the English singer and songwriter’s 62nd and 63rd top 40 appearances. “American Town” and “Magical” are lifted from Sheeran’s Autumn Variations (Gingerbread Man), which is sailing to No. 1 on the U.K. albums chart.

The Official U.K. Singles Chart is published late Friday, Oct. 6.

Boygenius Bring Catharsis & Communion to the Masses at Magnificent Madison Square Garden Debut

A crowd of girls, gays, theys and every combination therein milled about Madison Square Garden on Monday night (Oct. 2). They chatted with each other about their favorite shows they’d seen lately, swapping lyrics and showing off tattoos.

Moments later, aside from a few errant cheers, the 20,000 person gathering had gone quiet, gently humming and singing along to an a capella hymn. The leaders of this communal canticle were the women of BoygeniusJulien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. Huddled around a microphone backstage and broadcast onto a massive LED screen, the trio offered a promise to their entranced congregants: “I’ll give everything I’ve got/ Please take what I can give,” they sang. “I want you to hеar my story/ And be a part of it.”

The ensuing 2 hours of Boygenius’ sold-out debut set at the iconic New York venue further proved why the supergroup has become one of the most essential bands of this generation. Through raucous hell-raising, intimate storytelling and proficient performing, the alternative triumvirate delivered their screaming fans an all-time great show fueled by emotional outpouring and a sense of genuine (and overtly queer) community. As Dacus put it towards the end of the evening, “this has been the best night of our lives.”

The band was certainly set up for success from the start — fellow queer-femme alternative purveyors MUNA (who Baker referred to as “our collective favorite band” later on) brought the house down with their high-energy, crowd-pleasing opening set. Skipping around the stage and kicking inflatable horses into the eager audience, the band made sure they got the crowd’s excitement that much higher for “MUNAGenius,” the portmeanteau fans used to further hype up the performance. “It’s like the capital of friends being horny with each other onstage,” lead singer Katie Gavin said with a laugh.

By the time the headliners pranced onto the stage, the house was already in shambles as attendees screamed along to every word of the rousing “$20.” Throughout the set, fans made a point to shout along in perfect unison on specific lyrics, like “sleep in cars and kill the bourgeoisie” on the exhilarating “Satanist,” or “f–k around and find out” on “True Blue.” With each member dressed in their crisp suits and wielding their guitars, you would be forgiven for drawing parallels between the cheering masses of today and those at the height of Beatlemania.

The feeling was most certainly mutual — at multiple points throughout the evening, the band stopped to survey the excited masses and express their awe. Dacus first addressed the crowd with a giddy scream; Bridgers shook her head and laughed that “this don’t make no sense”; Baker said she would do her best to actually keep her eyes open when singing, despite the fact that she was “so nervous” at the “insane” crowd.

It was that communal, reciprocal energy that brought something fresh to Boygenius’ show — as moved as fans were by the band’s tender ballads like standouts “Emily, I’m Sorry” and “Revolution 0,” the trio were just as moved by their fans’ attentive action. After Dacus was tossed a series of pink carnations during her performance of “We’re In Love” (a reference to the song’s lyric “I’ll be the boy with the pink carnation”), she couldn’t hold in her tears. Her cries of joy led to a group hug that sent waves of sentimental fervor through the audience.

At one point early in the evening, Bridgers couldn’t help but point out how different a Boygenius show felt to any other concert. “Our fans are all so nice to each other and to us, that the security team up here has literally been handing out tissues,” she said. “Thank you for your service, guys.”

The sentimentality certainly didn’t stop the band from letting fans in on sillier moments. When prompted to introduce one another almost halfway through the event, each member was given their own WWE-style introduction from their bandmates. Right after starting fan-favorite “Me & My Dog,” Bridgers brought the song to a halt in order to ask fans to hold up pictures of their pooches.

Much like their songs, the band made sure to show off the talents of each member at every given opportunity. Dacus’ crystal clear voice pierced through the artifice with”Please Stay”; Baker let her demons out on the outstanding “Favor”; Bridgers poured tender passion into each word of “Graceland Too.”

At one point towards the end of show, the trio decided to treat their adoring audience to something even more special; after a top-notch rendition of “Not Strong Enough,” the band ran to the venue’s B-stage on the opposite end of the Garden’s floor. Taking up their new position in a sea of rapt onlookers, the trio performed all four songs off their unreleased EP The Rest, set to release on Oct. 13. Whether embracing oblivion on “Black Hole” or dissociating on “Voyager,” Boygenius ran through the entirety of their new project, beaming at their fans the entire time.

Yet the highlights from the evening came when the band allowed themselves and the crowd to experience release, be it through confessional, tender performances like “Letter to an Old Poet,” or Dacus and Bridgers physically releasing their bodies by going partly-topless for closer “Salt in the Wound.” Bake had her own moment of catharsis on “Anti-Curse,” after which she revealed that she had lost her sense of confidence before getting to work with her friends again.

“These guys have given me my voice back,” she said, holding back tears as Bridgers and Dacus beamed at her from either side of the stage. “I think that is what music is for; to hear your voice against another person’s. So if you need confirmation, then let us be your confirmation bias. We need you to be able to do this.”

Rod Wave’s ‘Nostalgia’ Notches Second Week Atop Billboard 200 Chart

Rod Wave spends a second week atop the Billboard 200 chart (dated Oct. 7) with Nostalgia, after debuting at No. 1 a week ago. The set earned 88,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Sept. 28 (down 36%) according to Luminate. It’s the first of his three No. 1s to have led for multiple weeks.

Also in the top 10 of the new Billboard 200, Doja Cat’s Scarlet starts at No. 4 while Zach Bryan’s new Boys of Faith bows at No. 8.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Oct. 7, 2023-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Oct. 3. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

Of Nostalgia’s 88,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Sept. 28, SEA units comprise 87,500 (equaling 124.51 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 18 songs), album sales comprise 500, and TEA units comprise a negligible sum.

Nostalgia’s 88,000 sum is the smallest total for a No. 1 album in seven months, since SZA’s SOS led the list dated March 4 with 87,000 units.

Olivia Rodrigo’s chart-topping Guts holds at No. 2 on the new Billboard 200 (87,500 equivalent album units; down 34%) and Morgan Wallen’s former No. 1 One Thing at a Time climbs one rung to No. 3 (73,000; down 3%).

Doja Cat captures her third top 10 album on the Billboard 200, all notched consecutively, as her new studio set Scarlet starts at No. 4 with nearly 72,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, SEA units comprise 65,000 (equaling 88.35 million on-demand official audio and video streams of the set’s 17 songs), album sales comprise 6,000 (the set was only available as a digital download, CD and in a deluxe boxed set with a T-shirt and CD) and TEA units comprise 1,000. The digital and streaming edition of the album was available in a standard 15-song edition and a deluxe 17-track version.

Scarlet was preceded by three charting songs on the Billboard Hot 100: “Demons,” “Paint the Town Red” and “Attention.” “Paint the Town Red” became her second No. 1 on the Hot 100 on the Sept. 16-dated chart (following 2020’s “Say So,” featuring Nicki Minaj).

Doja Cat previously hit the top 10 on the Billboard 200 with Planet Her (No. 2 in 2021) and Hot Pink (No. 9 in 2020).

Zach Bryan’s chart-topping self-titled album falls 3-5 on the new Billboard 200 (66,000 equivalent album units; down 16%), SZA’s SOS dips 5-6 (49,000; down 7%) and Travis Scott’s former leader Utopia descends 6-7 (just over 44,000; down 6%).

A second Bryan album appears in the top 10, as his new five-song Boys of Faith project bows at No. 8 with 43,500 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, SEA units comprise 39,000 (equaling 50.35 million on-demand official audio and video streams of the set’s songs), album sales comprise 4,000 and TEA units comprise 500. Boys of Faith is the third top 10-charting effort for Bryan, and second in 2023, following his self-titled No. 1, which debuted at the summit just four weeks earlier. He has also hit the top 10 with the No. 5-peaking American Heartbreak in 2022.

Rounding out the top 10 on the new Billboard 200 is Peso Pluma’s Génesis (moving 7-9 with 43,000 equivalent album units earned; down 7%) and Taylor Swift’s former leader Midnights (8-10 with 42,000; up less than 1%).

Ed Sheeran Cruising to U.K. No. 1 With ‘Autumn Variations’

Ed Sheeran season is here.

The superstar English singer and songwriter is cruising to No. 1 on the U.K. chart with Autumn Variations (via Gingerbread Man), which dropped last Friday (Sept. 29) for Sheeran’s second long-play release of the year.

Based on sales and streaming data published by the Official Charts Company, Autumn Variations is outselling its nearest competitor by more than two-to-one, to lead the chart blast.

If it holds its course, Sheeran will extend his flawless streak of No. 1 studio albums to seven, a run that began with his 2011 debut + (plus).

Produced with Aaron Dessner, Autumn Variations should give Sheeran his second leader on the Official U.K. Albums Chart in 2023, after (subtract) logged two weeks at the summit in June.

Coming in at No. 2 on the Official Chart Update is Porcupine Tree member Steven Wilson‘s solo effort The Harmony Codex (SW Records). If it stays on target, The Harmony Codex would be Wilson’s highest charting solo effort, improving on peak positions of 2017’s To The Bone (No. 3) and 2021’s The Future Bites (No. 4).

Completing the podium at the midweek stage is British R&B artist Jorja Smith’s sophomore album Falling Or Flying (FAMM). It’s new at No. 3 on the chart blast, and should give the BRITs Critics Choice award winner a third U.K. top 10 appearance.

Further down, Kentucky rock act Black Stone Cherry could nab a fourth U.K. top 10 with Screamin’ At The Sky (Mascot), set to bow at No. 5; U.K. retro synth-pop trio act Gunship could ride to a first U.K. top 10 with concept album Unicorn (Horsie In The Hedge), poised for a No. 7 start; while British soul veteran Beverley Knight who could bag her fifth top 10 with The Fifth Chapter (Tag8), set to start at No. 10.

Keep an eye out for potential top 40 berths from Anna Lapwood (LUNA at No. 26 via Sony Classical), Wilco (Cousin at No. 29 via Sony Music CG), Orb & David Gilmour (Metallic Spheres In Colour at No. 31 via Sony Music CG), Hawkwind (Space Ritual at No. 32 via Atomhenge/Cherry Red), 2023 U.K. Eurovision rep Mae Muller (Sorry I’m Late at No. 33 via Capitol) and Andrew Cushin (Waiting For The Rain at No. 35 via Strap Originals).

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Albums Chart is published late Friday, Oct. 6.

“I really like these chargers. Once fully charged, they’ll hold that charge for days without use (I haven’t tried leaving them longer yet), and they fully charge my phone and still have battery left over. The only reason I didn’t give five stars is because they’re just a little bigger than I would like,” reads one customer review. “I have a smaller purse and one of them takes up about as much room as my Galaxy S22. That said, they’re very convenient and I’ve used them several times already, usually to charge my phone while streaming something to our TV.”

Other customer reviews noted pricing, portability and ease of use as some of the benefits of Loveledi’s portable charger. And, of course, you can’t beat a two-for-one deal.

“This dual pack is fantastic. I gave one to my wife and kept the other,” wrote one shopper who used the charger on a nine hour, 100-mile bike tour. “It kept my [cell] phone fully charged with several apps active, such as mile tracker, speedometer, iWatch, messenger, Facebook, [iTunes] and MixCloud,” the shopper wrote. “I also have a mini battery charger, however, it does not last all day like this one. Plus, the multiple charger ports allow dual charging simultaneously which the kids love when we are on our long drives. …you will love this charger! I/We definitely do!!!”

Another shopper found the charger useful for an older phone that dies easily. “I kept one of these backup batteries in my belt pack on my last vacation and it recharged my phone to full from 10% multiple times over and still had charge left at the end of the day.”
