The Rise of Mexican Music Touring | Billboard Latin Music Week 2023

The hottest genre on the charts is the hottest genre on the road. Fuerza Regida’s frontman JOP and Live Nation’s Hans Schafer and Jorge Garcia on how to book, market and sell out Mexican music shows.

JOP:
A lot of struggle. We started from the bottom. We started — I would do my own flyer parties. I’d hire the best groups in the city, then I would close. We would close. I’d hire my own band to close, we started like that, then we had our first hit. We started going into clubs. And then I went to like, from 20 to 50 and then from 50 to 100 and then you know, little by little, we went to a lot of clubs. Nothing the same, you know, the people get extra drunk. That’s where “Otra Peda” came from, you know, at the club it’s a little more crazy, but, um, then we just jumped into the next step. And thank God, it went well for us. Little by little, we are completing our goals and we’re filling stadiums and arenas, thank God!

Griselda Flores:
Well, Jorge, Hans, Jesús Ortiz Paz, frontman of Fuerza Regida, thank you so much for being here with us. I’m so excited.

JOP:
Good morning!

Griselda Flores:
Welcome to Latin Music Week and thank you everyone for being here. Before we get into the conversation, I want to see if we could play some footage from the massive ‘Otra Peda’ tour of Fuerza Regida.

The Art of the Festival | Billboard Latin Music Week 2023

Presented by Viña del Mar

Learn what goes on behind the scenes of crafting and sustaining a successful Latin music festival from the most successful festival producers in the world.

Chris Den Uijl
In the US when we launched Sueños, it was incredible feedback. We did 45,000 people per day, first year, and we had no idea what we were going to do. And we were just blown away. And to go into this year and see that grow. There’s a huge, huge need for consumption. But it’s completely different. We’re learning every single day that we need to challenge ourselves is, is that we don’t need to separate ourselves anymore from saying we have an inclusive Latin festival versus a multi-genre festival.

John Frias
My name is John Frias, the festival is in Los Angeles, and soon to be in Austin. It’s a quintessential festival of Los Angeles. It represents all of the culture that is in LA. It’s very representative of, of the diverse crowd and population and culture in Los Angeles, and just having the time of our lives.

Bruno Del Granado
Excellent. Next to John is my friend Chris, then out from Baja Beach, past suenos Coca Cola flow dynamics la familia on and on. Chris, can you tell us a little bit about your background and some of the festivals your work?

Chris Den Uijl
Hi, everyone, thanks for coming. Um, yeah, so we launched a bunch of different festivals over the last 10 years. But specific to this panel, Baja Beach Fest launched about five years ago. And it’s really just a celebration for Latinos in general, we wanted to create an event that really just like celebrated culture was a platform for the artists to be able to express themselves in like a really united way, but also bring the same type of production that you know, the Anglo festivals that I typically came from brought to the Latin culture so trying to build, you know, one of the strongest kind of footprints for artists to express themselves. And yeah, as time has passed on, we’ve expanded that footprint in two different cities in Mexico, as well as launched a festival called Sueños in Chicago two years ago.

Exactly Who Is Listening to Latin Music? Everyone! | Billboard Latin Music Week 2023

Luminate, the entertainment industry’s most trusted data partner, unveiled its new Latin Music Report exclusively at Billboard Latin Music Week. Never-before-revealed metrics and insights include the growing power of Latin superfans, how and why the genre is expanding to non-Spanish-speaking listeners, the rise of regional Mexican music and the subgenres and artists to watch in the coming months. The findings were presented by Rob Jonas, CEO of Luminate, which has fueled the Billboard charts for over three decades.

Rob Jonas:
Less than two weeks ago, as everybody’s aware, Bad Bunny teased his new song through his WhatsApp channel before releasing it towards the end of August. So I’m Rob Jonas, I’m with Luminate. We’re gonna go through a lot of numbers. But let’s dive in!

So many of you are aware that we publish pretty detailed reports twice a year, our media report and our annual report. We’ve been tracking the rise of Latin music for a very long time now. Many, many big trends we’ve seen in recent quarters, and I’m just gonna pull up some notes here. One sec.

So in our media report, we were talking about, obviously, the continued growth of Latin this year. It’s definitely primed for continued growth in the mainstream, as well as the very specific Latin market. Actually, we’ve seen in the media report, an increase of U.S. listeners who are listening to Spanish music, even though they don’t speak Spanish, myself included. We’ve also been looking very closely at a lot of the superfan data. Superfan is a very big topic right now within the industry.

Sphere Entertainment Stock Jumps 11% Following U2’s Debut Concert at Vegas Venue

Sphere Entertainment Co. shares rose 11.1% to $41.99 on Monday (Oct. 2) — and reached a high of $43.59, up 17.3% from Friday’s closing price — after the world got its first glimpses of the revolutionary concert venue over the weekend.

The $2.3 billion venue opened on Friday (Sept. 29) with the first of 25 dates of U2’s residency, which concludes Dec. 16. In its recap, Billboard called Sphere a “mind-blowing space” with “hard-to-fathom floor-to-ceiling graphics” and immersive audio that “made it feel like you were in a recording studio with U2.”

Investors’ interest increased Sphere’s market capitalization by $143.2 million to $1.43 billion. Trading volume of 3 million was nearly six times greater than the average daily volume of 538,000 shares.

Sphere Entertainment Co., formerly Madison Square Garden Entertainment (MSGE), was formed on April 20 when MSGE’s traditional live entertainment business, which includes the Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall venues in New York, split off from the Sphere and MSG Networks businesses. Sphere retained a 33% stake in MSGE.

While U2 ultimately got top billing, Sphere proved the venue is a major attraction unto itself. First-hand accounts raved about both U2’s performance and the venue across social media, online news and broadcast television. Sphere CEO Jim Dolan spoke to his hometown crowd via an interview with Fox 5 New York. U2’s Bono and The Edge did an interview with CBS Mornings and another with the United Kingdom’s Channel 4

Sphere’s presence above the Las Vegas skyline provides valuable promotion. Since the venue turned on its external lights — aka the Exosphere — on July 4 and began broadcasting jaw-dropping graphics, Sphere Entertainment Co.’s share price has climbed 49.4%.

Sphere will get more high-value promotion this month when Las Vegas hosts a Formula 1 race for the first time since 1982. City streets, including a stretch of Las Vegas Blvd. — i.e. the famous Las Vegas strip —will be converted into a race track and closed to traffic. The race course passes directly by Sphere, meaning millions of Americans — and more viewers worldwide — will see the venue as the drivers complete 50 laps of the 3.9-mile course. And because the race starts at 10:00 p.m. local time, the 588,000-square foot LED exterior covered in 1.2 million LED pucks — each with 48 individual LED diodes — will be impossible to miss.

Artists Should Take Heed of Banned Books Week and Know Music Is in Similar Peril (Guest Column)

Banned Books Week is here, and while book lovers everywhere rally against the censorship of our cherished stories, musicians like Ariana Grande, Idina Menzel and Yola have added their names to the chorus of celebrities and activists in an open letter condemning the ominous threat of book bans. This impassioned message — led by the iconic LeVar Burton of Reading Rainbow fame and propelled by moveon.org — boldly declares about book bans that “It’s only a matter of time before they target other forms of art, expression, and entertainment.”

This point is exactly what I was afraid of as I began working on my latest album, FREADOM: Songs Inspired by Banned Picture Books, and the reason why I want to get more musicians on board to join the movement against book bans.

As a Manhattanite, I wear many hats: touring musician, recording artist, early childhood music educator and mom to an eight-year-old bookworm. Over the past year, I’ve taken a dive deep into the disheartening world of book bans, especially books removed from school and library shelves. My connection to this issue deepened when I discovered that some of my daughter’s beloved books, including Sulwe by Lupita Nyong’o and Alma and How She Got her Name by Juana Martinez-Neal, had been taken away in my own home state of Florida by Governor Ron DeSantis and spearheaded by his supporters in the right-wing group Moms for Liberty.

In the 2021-22 school year, First Amendment advocates PEN America reported that a shocking 317 children’s picture books were banned. Most of these silenced stories belong to BIPOC authors, LGBTQIA+ individuals, books with Jewish themes or stories representing diverse cultural backgrounds. The fact that even our youngest readers aren’t spared is truly devastating. Picture books and children’s music go hand-in-hand for young kids to learn about the world around them and build empathy for others.

When I set out to create songs for FREADOM, I naively thought that only books were under threat from modern censorship, though I vaguely knew about the mid-20th century “banning of immoral music” as it pertained to censorship of jazz and rock & roll due to “provocative” dancing or promoting social change. Growing up in the 1980s, while devouring the shelves of CDs at my local Miami music store, I recall the infamous black and white Parental Advisory labels placed on the plastic because of explicit content. I honestly thought music censorship was a thing of the past and we were collectively cool when it came to free music (and I’m not talking about the Napster kind.)

When I recently visited the PEN America offices, I was shocked to learn about an elementary school in Waukesha, Wis., where they banned a performance of the song “Rainbowland” by Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus for violating their “controversial content policy.” Over the summer, the school board controversially dismissed first-grade teacher Melissa Tempel for daring to speak out against the musical ban — exercising her First Amendment rights outside of school hours on social media. Teachers in that district are also barred from wearing rainbows, discussing gender pronouns or even mentioning the word “anti-racist.”

As a lyricist, educator, and mother, I can confidently say that there’s nothing controversial about “Rainbowland” and its removal may be seen as an actionable blueprint from the right and a glimpse of what’s coming our way in the land of the “free.”

Book bans are just one piece of a larger plan to dismantle our education system and undermine the core of our democracy one art form at a time, all under the guise of “protecting children.” By standing idle and failing to protect our First Amendment rights now, we are heading on a bleak path forward. It’s only a matter of time before they come after our music, just as they’ve come after our bodily autonomy and voting rights.

Musicians, I urge you to join me in the fight against book bans, defending our First Amendment rights and safeguarding the personal freedoms of all Americans. Come stir up good trouble and take a stand!  “We will not be banned!”

Singer/songwriter Joanie Leeds won a 2020 Grammy Award for best children’s album and in her new album, FREADOM, released Sept. 15, she and her band take on book banning through eight original songs that amplify love and inclusion.

Sia Reveals She’s Had a Face Lift

Sia isn’t hiding procedures she’s gotten done.

The “Chandelier” singer attended the fifth annual Daytime Beauty Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (Oct. 1), where she presented plastic surgeon Dr. Ben Talei with the award for outstanding achievement in medicine. During her speech, she revealed that she has personal experience with Dr. Talei’s work, as he has given her a face lift.

“I’m a pop star that normally hides my face and doesn’t lie about s—. I got an amazing face lift from Dr. Talei,” Sia said, according to People. “He is incredible. And he is doing so much good work — and not just for the pop stars of the world.”

She continued, “I was showing someone in the back my before-and-afters right before I came on. People go, ‘You look nice.’ I’m like, ‘Dr. Ben Talei facelift’ for anything you could ever want. I love him, I can’t say enough good about him.”

Over in the music world, Sia has a lot coming up. The star released her new single “Gimme Love” in September, marking the initial taste of her’s first new solo pop album in eight years, Reasonable Woman, which she said in a post is due out in the spring of next year.

Sia’s last studio album was 2016’s This Is Acting, which was mostly comprised of songs she wrote for other artists that were not released on their albums and featured the singles “Alive,” “Cheap Thrills,” “The Greatest” and “Unstoppable.” She followed up with the holiday album Everyday Is Christmas in 2017 and the 2021 soundtrack album Music — Songs From and Inspired by the Motion Picture, the companion to her directorial debut of the same name.

Available for pre-order at $49.99 at Amazon, Best Buy, Target and Walmart, WarioWare: Move It! is a party video game with more than 200 motion-controlled microgames across gameplay options, including Party Mode, Story Mode and The Museum.

For up to four players, “The Museum” is a collection of quick head-to-head challenges that you can pick and choose from in local co-op play, while “Party Mode” is a board-game-style match. And for a true WarioWare experience, just because you win your match, it doesn’t mean you move ahead in the game.

“Story Mode” involves Wario on a tropical island running from evil spirits in a random assortment of microgames thrown at you. The more microgames you complete, the faster Wario runs away.

Here’s a list of a few microgames found in “The Museum”:

  • Cowboy Up
  • Buttograph
  • Super Mario Bros. 3 (shake your tail to fly)
  • Feeling Peckish
  • Bell Chorus
  • Keeping Count
  • Thigh Fishing
  • Sumo Says
  • Train
  • Shell Shine

Nintendo/Amazon

Meanwhile, microgames range from short “follow-the-leader”-style games to brief Switch Sports-like challenges. There are a few microgames that are a throwback to early Nintendo titles and characters too. Moreover, you’ll sometimes have to “strike a pose” and get into a funny, yet awkward, standing position to complete a few games, but it’s all in the spirit of fun and participation from the WarioWare series.

Overall, in a first impression and without a full review, WarioWare: Move It! is loads of fun with short bursts of exciting challenges, especially with more than one player. The mircogames are creative and inventive with bright colors and slick animations, while the motion controls seem accurate and amusing to execute in a group. While “Story Mode” is reserved for single player experiences, it’s ultimately a party game meant to be played with friends and family.

WarioWare: Move It! for Nintendo Switch comes out on Nov. 3 for $49.99. It’s available for pre-order now.

Cardi B Has the Time of Her Life at Beyoncé’s Final Renaissance World Tour Show

On Sunday night, Beyoncé wrapped her historic Renaissance World Tour in Kansas City, Mo., and Cardi B was there to bear witness to the end of the record-breaking trek. In a series of Instagram Story posts, the “Bongos” rapper chronicled her experience during the show.

Cardi began her Instagram Story barrage with a quick video surveying her private jet. “And we out,” read the caption. With travel to Missouri secured, the Grammy winner then uploaded a clip of her in a car on the way to Arrowhead Stadium. In the video, she’s singing along to the BEAM-featuring Renaissance track “Energy” in anticipation of the viral “mute challenge.” (The challenge is a friendly competition to see which stadium can actually remain completely quiet when Beyoncé sings the song’s “Look around/ Everybody on mute” lyric.) In a clip taken during the concert, Cardi excitedly participates in the challenge, throwing some lethal side-eyes to a couple of attendees who couldn’t help but scream during the elongated pause.

In addition to “Energy,” Cardi also posted clips of Beyoncé performing “Dangeously in Love,” the show’s opening song and the title track from her debut solo studio album, which celebrates its 20-year anniversary this year. “Yaaass, bi—!” Cardi screams throughout the recording. The “WAP” rapper also posted videos vibing and singing along to “America Has a Problem,” which shot back to its No. 38 peak on the Billboard Hot 100 following the release of a remix with Kendrick Lamar earlier this year. Lamar made a surprise appearance at Beyoné’s birthday show in Los Angeles on Sept. 4.

Over a clip showing Beyoncé sinigng “Summer Renaissance” and flying above the crowd on a life-size version of the disco horse on the album’s cover — lovingly nicknamed “Reneigh” by fans — Cardi wrote, “It’s not a concert… it’s [an] experience,” an apt descriptor for the finale of a tour that has moved millions of people around the world.

The Renaissance World Tour was in support of Beyoncé’s Billboard 200-topping seventh solo studio album. The record — a love letter to Black queer folk and their contributions to the foundation of dance music — won four Grammys and spawned a pair of Hot 100 top 10 hits: “Break My Soul” (No. 1) and “Cuff It” (No. 6). Last week, Billboard reported that the tour’s global haul will blow past the $500 million mark, likely closer to $560 million — with 10 shows left to be reported. With those numbers, the tour will become one of the 10 highest-grossing tours in Boxscore history, making Beyoncé the only woman, only Black artist and only American solo act on the all-time leaderboard.

Although she documented a healthy chunk of her Renaissance experience, Cardi’s stories did not include a very special announcement Beyoncé made at the very end of the show. The music icon will bring a documentary concert film titled Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé to theaters on Dec. 1, and pre-sale tickets are currently available.
