Aretha Franklin’s Sons Awarded Real Estate Owing to Handwritten Will Found in Couch Cushions

A judge overseeing the estate of Aretha Franklin awarded real estate to the late star’s sons, citing a handwritten will from 2014 that was found between couch cushions.

The decision Monday came four months after a Detroit-area jury said the document was a valid will under Michigan law, despite scribbles and many hard-to-read passages. Franklin had signed it and put a smiley face in the letter “A.”

The papers will override a handwritten will from 2010 that was found at Franklin’s suburban Detroit home around the same time in 2019, the judge said.

One of her sons, Kecalf Franklin, will get that property, which was valued at $1.1 million in 2018, but is now worth more. A lawyer described it as the “crown jewel” before trial last July.

Another son, Ted White II, who had favored the 2010 will, was given a house in Detroit, though it was sold by the estate for $300,000 before the dueling wills had emerged.

“Teddy is requesting the sale proceeds,” Charles McKelvie, an attorney for Kecalf Franklin, said Tuesday.

Judge Jennifer Callaghan awarded a third son, Edward Franklin, another property under the 2014 will.

Aretha Franklin had four homes when she died of pancreatic cancer in 2018. The discovery of the two handwritten wills months after her death led to a dispute between the sons over what their mother wanted to do with her real estate and other assets.

One of the properties, worth more than $1 million, will likely be sold and the proceeds shared by four sons. The judge said the 2014 will didn’t clearly state who should get it.

“This was a significant step forward. We’ve narrowed the remaining issues,” McKelvie said of the estate saga.

There’s still a dispute over how to handle Aretha Franklin’s music assets, though the will appears to indicate that the sons would share any income. A status conference with the judge is set for January.

Franklin was a global star for decades, known especially for hits in the late 1960s like “Think,” “I Say a Little Prayer” and “Respect.”

BTS Unleash Career-Spanning Trailer for ‘Monuments: Beyond the Star’ Disney+ Docuseries

From their trainee days through their current solo projects, the life of BTS will be on display in the upcoming Disney+ docuseries BTS Monuments: Beyond the Star — and now we have a trailer for the expansive project.

Released on Tuesday (Nov. 28), the trailer kicks off as the then-newly-formed group — Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jung Kook — train to become the biggest band on the planet. And they achieve their goal, as images flash of the septet winning awards and headlining U.S. stadiums. “It felt like we were leveling up,” J-Hope says in the trailer.

Everything grinds to a halt with the 2020 pandemic, as their tour is canceled and their daily activities come to a standstill. “I was hoping and waiting for a change in my personal life,” V says. But BTS comes out of the pandemic bigger than ever with their Permission to Dance On Stage in the US tour. And now, the members are exploring their individual talents as they release solo projects — with all seven scoring their own Billboard Hot 100 hits and Jimin and Jung Kook even topping the chart (with “Like Crazy” and “Seven” featuring Latto respectively) — before they come back together as a group in 2025.

With the tagline “10 Years of BTS and Beyond,” the eight-part Monuments series will debut Dec. 20 on Disney+, with two new episodes released every Wednesday over four weeks. BTS previously teamed with Disney+ last year for their BTS: Permission to Dance On Stage – LA concert film, which is streaming now on the service.

Nardo Wick Responds to Viral Video of Fan Being Assaulted by Security After His Show

A video showing two members of Nardo Wick‘s entourage knocking out a fan who was trying to ask for a photo made the rounds on social media earlier Tuesday (Nov. 28), and now Wick has released a statement.

The video, filmed after Wick’s performance at Club Skye in Tampa, Fla., on Monday night, shows a man approaching the “Who Want Smoke?” rapper before being stopped and then punched repeatedly by two men as he falls to the ground. As he’s being assaulted, a voice believed to be Wick’s can be heard in the background telling the men to “chill.” (You can watch the video here; warning that it’s violent.)

The Tampa Police Department said in a statement they are “interested in speaking to anyone who witnessed the incident or may have information that would assist in identifying the suspects.” The victim’s mother took to Facebook in an attempt to bring attention to the situation, posting, “My son wanted a stupid f—in picture with his favorite artist!!! The tour will welcome openers Stephen Wilson Jr., The Cadillac Three, Zach Top, Jackson Dean, Madeline Edwards and Caylee Hammack.

Following the release of their genre-blurring self-titled fourth studio album, the duo earned a Grammy nomination for best country album, as well as a nomination for best country duo/group performance (for “Nobody’s Nobody”) at the 2024 Grammys. The duo earned their first Grammy win last year, earning best country duo/group performance for their song “Younger Me.” Since making their debut with “Let’s Go There” in 2013, the duo has earned two top 10 Country Airplay and Hot Country Songs hits, with “Stay a Little Longer” and the Dierks Bentley collaboration “Burning Man.”

The sibling duo’s John and TJ Osborne co-wrote every song on their 11-track self-titled project, including their radio single “Nobody’s Nobody,” which they wrote with Mike Elizondo and Kendell Marvel.

“We are always pushing ourselves, always evolving and not afraid to change,” John Osborne said in a statement. “But at the end of the day, we are also who we are.”

“This is a defining record at this point in our career, where we needed to put it all on our shoulders,” TJ added. “And we did. Like it was when we were growing up, it’s just John and me.”

Members of the band’s The Family Fan Club can unlock exclusive pre-sale access to shows by logging into the official website at brothersosborne.com. Brothers Osborne fan-club presale will begin on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 10 a.m. local time, with select presales that week ahead of general on-sale which will begin on Friday, Dec. 1 10 a.m. local time here.

See you in 2024.”

The Eras Tour will pick up next year in February, starting with four dates at the Tokyo Dome in Japan. Behind the Scenes of 2023 MAMAs, Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Feather’ Drama | Billboard News

Billboard News’ Tetris Kelly is in Tokyo for this year’s MAMA Awards and is giving us an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the awards show’s space and stages. A Catholic priest is relieved of his administrative duties after allowing scenes from Sabrina Carpenter’s “Feather” music video to be filmed inside a Brooklyn church. Paris Hilton shared two throwback photos looking back on her friendship with Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan. Jennifer Lopez takes fans on a “musical experience” in a newly released teaser for her upcoming album, ‘This Is Me…Now.’ Ally Brooke stopped by Billboard News and opened up about a potential Fifth Harmony reunion, her return to pop music, creating her new holiday EP ‘Under the Tree’ and more!

Kyle Denis:
Sabrina Carpenter is feeling the heat, Paris Hilton takes us back in time, J.Lo teases new music, we get an exclusive look into the MAMA Awards, and we catch up with former Fifth Harmony member Ally Brooke.

What’s good, y’all? I’m Kyle Denis. It’s Tuesday, November 28th, and I am bringing you news from our New York offices.

You will probably see some of my co-workers walking around behind me. I’m filling in for Tetris because he’s in Tokyo right now for the MAMA Awards, and he got an inside look at how the show is put together.

Tetris Kelly:
TOMORROW X TOGETHER, LE SSERAFIM, SEVENTEEN, ENHYPEN, ATEEZ and me? Guys, I can’t believe it. I’m in Tokyo at the Tokyo Dome for the 2023 MAMA Awards. Every artist you can think of is going to be hitting this stage, and I’m here to take you behind the scenes to the biggest event in K-pop. The MAMA Awards take place on November 28th and 29th in Tokyo, Japan. And speaking of the amazing show, I got to talk to one of the producers about what the MAMA Awards mean.

Hyoung-jin Lee:
It’s different in many ways. MAMA Awards is the world’s No. 1 K-pop awards. As it incorporates different technologies. It’s the most future-oriented awards show.

Tetris Kelly:
And speaking of it being high-tech, you’re a part of the performances. You helped produce this. I mean, some of my favorite stages have been at this show. BTS in 2020 was out of control. So how was it to arrange these stages?

Bill Mayne, Longtime Nashville Executive and Former CRS/CRB Executive Director, Dies at 72

Longtime Nashville music and radio industry executive and former Country Radio Broadcasters/Country Radio Seminar executive director Bill Mayne died on Tuesday (Nov. 28) at age 72 following a battle with a long-term illness.

Mayne’s career spanned nearly five decades. He began performing in a band before transitioning into radio, with his career including on-air and programming roles at various radio formats including top 40, rock and country. His radio career began in 1970 in an on-air role at KRLY in Houston; he would go on to serve in roles at KASE in Austin, KZLA/KLAC in Los Angeles and KSCS/WBAP in Dallas.

Mayne then spent 15 years at Warner Bros./Nashville, where he held a variety of roles, rising through the ranks from a regional role to senior vp/GM and vp of promotion. He was also a member of the Country Radio Broadcasters board, eventually becoming board vp before taking on the role of executive director at Country Radio Broadcaster in 2010 — a role he held until his retirement in 2019.

Current Country Radio Broadcasters/Country Radio Seminar (CRB/CRS) executive director RJ Curtis said in a statement, “The passing of Bill Mayne marks a profound loss for the entire country music community. Bill was a true giant in every sense of the word. His fifty years of passionate work positively impacted everyone he met, in nearly every segment of our business, through his time in radio, the music industry, artist management, entrepreneurialism, and, of course, his decade of leadership as Executive Director for CRB. Bill Mayne navigated the organization through a period of great adversity, ultimately reestablishing CRS as the premier industry event that it is today.”

In 2019, Mayne received CRB/CRS’ President’s Award in recognition of the significant contributions he made to the radio industry.

Mayne also founded Mayne Entertainment, an artist management company, and Mayne Street Consulting, a private entertainment consulting firm that offered insight and guidance to clients in the entertainment field.

“Bill had great passion for Country Music going back to his days in radio,” Country Music Association CEO Sarah Trahern said in a statement. “I first worked with him in 1996 on a TV special when he was with Warner Bros. Nashville. I was struck by his enthusiasm for the format and ability to get things done. Years later, we were both officers of the ACMs, where his great knowledge of board governance and organization was a huge asset to our leadership team. Most recently, we got to work together when he joined the CMA Board of Directors, where he served from 2016 to 2018. My deepest condolences to Sallie and his sons.”

Beyond his professional accolades, Mayne previously served as a board member of the Country Music Association and spent over 35 years on the Academy of Country Music board of directors, including roles as chairman and chairman of the board at the ACM’s charitable arm, Lifting Lives. He also co-founded the St. Jude Country Cares for Kids Program, an initiative that has raised over $700 million for St. Jude since its inception in 1989. Additionally, he held the role of national vp for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and was a member of the Nashville non-profit Leadership Music as well as the mayor’s Nashville Music Council.

“On behalf of our membership and Board of Directors of the Academy and ACM Lifting Lives, I am deeply saddened by the loss today of Bill Mayne, a true giant of the country music industry, an invaluable champion of the Academy of Country Music, and one of our longest serving board members,” said Academy of Country Music CEO Damon Whiteside in a statement.

“Bill dedicated more than 35 years of service to the ACM Board, including serving as the Chairman for both the Academy and ACM Lifting Lives,” Whiteside continued. “I am comforted that we were able to celebrate his phenomenal legacy this summer by presenting him with our ACM Service Award at the 16th ACM Honors. Bill had a huge heart, as evidenced by his incredible philanthropic work, including his service to ACM Lifting Lives. His impact, passion, and devotion to the Country Music industry and community will live on forever. On behalf of all of us at the ACM, we send our love and prayers to his family, friends, and all who have been lucky enough to work with and know him.”

Mayne is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sallie Mayne; sons Bryant Mayne and Christopher Mayne; his grandchild, Everleigh Mayne; and mother-in-law Helen Wood. Plans for a public service honoring Mayne’s life have yet to be announced.
