‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ & ‘Elvis’ Lead 2023 Guild of Music Supervisors Nominations: Full List

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Elvis lead the 2023 Guild of Music Supervisors Awards nominations with three nods each – best music supervision for film budgeted over $25 million, best song written and/or recorded for a film, and best music supervision in a trailer – film.

Ten songs were nominated for best song written and/or recorded for a film. Four of them were shortlisted for Academy Awards in December. (Oscar nods will be announced Tuesday, Jan. 24, including closely watched songs by megastars Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift. Those songs are, respectively, “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever; “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick; and “Carolina” from Where the Crawdads Sing. The fourth GMS nominee shortlisted for an Oscar is “This Is a Life” from Everything Everywhere All at Once.

The six songs that failed to make the Oscar shortlist but were recognized here are “Paper Airplanes” from A Jazzman’s Blues, “Honey to the Bee” from Catherine Called Birdy; “Vegas” from Elvis; “Turn Up the Sunshine” from Minions: The Rise of Gru; “Ready as I’ll Never Be” from The Return of Tanya Tucker; and “A Song in My Heart” from The Valet.

For the first time this year, video game composers are nominated alongside music supervisors in a new category– best music supervision in a video game (original). Four other new categories have been added – best music supervision for a non-theatrically released film; best music supervision for a trailer – series; best music supervision for a trailer – video game & interactive; and best music supervision in advertising: $500K total production & post-production budget.

GMS winners will be revealed in a ceremony at The Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 5. This will be their first in-person awards event since the 2020 show, which was also at the Wiltern. The event will also be livestreamed for those who are unable to attend in person.

The awards celebrate outstanding achievement in the craft of music supervision in film, television, video games, documentaries, advertising, and trailers.  Tickets are available only to members of GMS and their Friends of the Guild subscription.

“We’re so excited to be back and able to host the awards ceremony in-person at the Wiltern again!” GMS president Joel C. High and vice president Madonna Wade-Reed said in a statement.  “We’ve got a great show lined up for this year which will include live performances, special tributes, and more. We’ll also be live-streaming for those unable to join us in person so they can tune in virtually. The Guild is looking forward to celebrating even more music supervisors, artists, and performers with the addition of our new categories and increase in nominees.” 

Still to be announced are the GMS Icon Award and the Legacy Award bestowing recognition to an artist and a music supervisor whose role in the industry reaches excellence.

Brooks & Dunn Extend Reboot Arena Tour Into 2023: Here Are the New Dates

Brooks & Dunn are extending their Reboot tour with the addition of 17 tour dates in 2023. The new slate of shows will launch on May 4 in Kansas City, Mo.

“Last year, you all reminded us just how much fun it is to walk out on that stage and share the night with ya! We love what we do, but we’re just surfing your wave …can’t wait!!” said Brooks & Dunn’s Kix Brooks via a statement.

“The Brooks and Dunn posse rides again,” added Ronnie Dunn. “More excited to hit the big stage as we ever have been! Unbelievable band of friends.…annnnnd YOU! Together, let’s rock the house!!”

Heading out on the road with B&D is Scotty McCreery, known for his chart toppers including “This Is It” and “Five More Minutes.”

“Having been a huge fan of their music all my life, going out on the road with Kix and Ronnie is a dream come true for me,” said McCreery. “I can’t wait for this tour to begin!”

The tour takes its name from Brooks & Dunn’s 2019 album Reboot, which found the duo collaborating with younger country artists including Kacey Musgraves, Midland and Luke Combs on several of Brooks & Dunn’s biggest hits. Though McCreery did not appear on that project, he did recently earn another Billboard Country Airplay chart topper with “Damn Strait,” a sly nod to another ’90s country artist, George Strait.

“My first country music concert was George Strait, and along with my love for Elvis [Presley], he inspired me to become a country music singer myself,” McCreery previously told Billboard. “When I did American Idol, George called me and requested I sing his [1995] hit ‘Check Yes or No,’ and I still sing it from time to time in concert. Now, having my fifth straight No. 1 on a song that pays tribute to George, while at the same time being a classic country heartbreaker such as he might have sung, is such a full-circle moment that means the world to me. Trent Tomlinson and Jim Collins wrote a clever song that reaches beyond name-dropping Strait hits to tell a meaningful story.”

Last year, Brooks & Dunn revived the CMT franchise CMT Storytellers, and rang in 2023 as part of Nashville’s New Year’s Eve Bash.

Lady Gaga Calls Taylor Swift ‘Really Brave’ for Opening Up About Eating Disorder

Lady Gaga had some kind words for Taylor Swift recently. After a fan on TikTok posted footage from the former pop star’s Miss Americana Netflix documentary, the “Bloody Mary” singer left a sweet comment praising Swift on her courage while speaking about an extremely difficult topic: disordered eating.

The TikTok Gaga commented on featured one of the more heartbreaking clips from the 2020 documentary, in which Swift recalls how she used to eat too little and work out too much in order to maintain what she says was an unhealthy body weight.

“I’m a lot happier with who I am,” she says in the video. “I don’t care as much if somebody points out that I have gained weight … it’s just something that makes my life better, the fact that I’m a size six instead of a size double zero.”

“That wasn’t how my body was supposed to be — I just didn’t really understand that at the time,” added the “All Too Well” singer. “I did exercise a lot, but I wasn’t eating. There’s always some standard of beauty you aren’t meeting. It’s all just f–king impossible.”

One of hundreds of people leaving messages of support for Swift on the TikTok clip was none other than Lady Gaga, who wrote, “That’s really brave everything you said ? wow.”

The topic is something that’s common ground between the two musicians. The “Rain on Me” musician has also dealt with eating disorders in the past, opening up in 2012 about having struggled with anorexia and bulimia since she was 15 years old.

Her recent comment isn’t the first time Gaga has praised Swift for her bravery. When Swift appeared in One World: Together at Home, a virtual benefit concert curated by Gaga at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the “Anti-Hero” singer-songwriter performed the devastating Lover track “Soon You’ll Get Better,” a The Chicks-assisted ballad dedicated to her mother, Andrea, who’s been battling cancer since 2015.

“This is so beautiful, Taylor,” the Haus Labs founder said on Instagram Live after Swift’s performance. “Thank you for sharing this vulnerable moment with us. You’re really, really even so much braver in this moment.”

Beck and Phoenix to Co-Headline 2023 Summer Odyssey Tour

Beck and Phoenix are teaming up for a warm weather outing they’re calling the Summer Odyssey Tour. The Live Nation-produced 19-city run is slated to kick off on Aug. 1 at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington and run through gigs in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, Boston and New York before winding down with a Sept. 10 show at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland.

The opening acts for the outing include Japanese Breakfast, Jenny Lewis, Weyes Blood and, on select dates, Sir Chloe. Tickets for the shows will go on sale on Friday (Jan. 27) at 10 a.m. local time here.

Phoenix recently released their pandemic-recorded seventh studio album, Alpha Zulu, which features a collaboration with Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig on the song “Tonight.” Beck’s most recent album is 2019’s Grammy-nominated Hyperspace, which featured the Pharrell collaboration single “Saw Lightning.”

While Phoenix have been on the road since September 2022 in support of Alpha Zulu while Beck has only appeared live a handful of times since late last year.

How to Watch the 2023 Oscars Nominations Announcement

Nominations in all 23 categories will be announced in a global livestream beginning at 8:30 a.m. ET (yep, that translates to 5:30 a.m. PT).

The presentation will stream on Oscar.com, Oscars.org and the Academy’s digital platforms (TikTok, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook), as well as on broadcast and streaming news programs including ABC’s Good Morning America, ABC News Live and Disney+.

Actor-producer Riz Ahmed and actress Allison Williams will host the announcement in a live presentation from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, Calif. Ahmed won an Oscar last year for short film (live action) for The Long Goodbye. He was nominated for best actor two years ago for Sound of Metal. Williams is best known for her roles in the 2017 film Get Out and the new viral horror hit M3GAN.

Here are the categories that will be announced starting at 5:30 a.m. ET, followed by those that will be announced starting at 5:41 a.m. ET. The Academy cautions that these are not listed in order of presentation and are subject to change.

The 95th Oscars is set to air live on ABC on Sunday, March 12. Jimmy Kimmel will host for the third time. The show will be broadcast from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the Oscars’ usual home since 2002. The ceremony will be produced by Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner, with Weiss also serving as director.

Billboard’s Power 100 Event Is Returning in Partnership With UBS

Billboard‘s signature Power 100 event is returning this year to celebrate the industry’s most influential executives.

For the 2023 edition of the event, Billboard revealed on Monday (Jan. 23) that the event is presented by leading global wealth manager UBS. Featured awards include Executive of the Year, Label of the Year and the Clive Davis Award.

As previously announced, for the first time ever, Billboard introduced a peer-voted award to the Power 100 ranking. The new Power Players’ Choice Award will honor the executive whose peers believe has had the most impact across the music business over the past year, from recording and publishing to touring. Voting for the honor closed on Jan. 17.

St. Vincent, John Mayer Trio, James Taylor, Sheryl Crow to Perform at 2023 Love Rocks NYC Benefit

The seventh annual Love Rocks NYC benefit concert will feature sets from James Taylor, St. Vincent, the John Mayer Trio, Sheryl Crow and Mavis Staples. The benefit for the nonprofit food delivery charity God’s Love We Deliver will take place at the Beacon Theater on March 9 and also feature sets from Pat Benatar & Neil Girlado, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Stephen Marley, Gary Clark Jr., Allison Russell, The War and Treaty, Bernie Williams and more acts to be announced soon.

The show will be executive produced by fashion designer John Varvatos, NY real estate broker and concert producer Greg Williamson and event producer Nicole Rechter. In addition to the musical acts, the show will also feature appearances from Stephen Colbert, Andy Cohen, Chevy Chase and Phoebe Robinson.

God’s Love was founded in 1985 during the height of the AIDS epidemic, and according to a release announcing the show the organization has been providing essential services during the COVID-19 pandemic, cooking and delivering more than 3.2 million meals to more than 10,500 New Yorkers living with severe illness. Since 2017, Love Rocks NYC has raised more than $25 million and helped fund in excess of 2.5 million meals to New Yorkers in need.

The music director and band leader for March’s show will be CBS Orchestra/Late Show with David Letterman bassist Will Lee. The night’s house band will include Steve Gadd (James Taylor, Eric Clapton), Shawn Pelton (Saturday Night Live), Larry Campbell (Levon Helm, Bob Dylan), Eric Krasno (Soulive, Phil Lesh & Friends), Pedrito Martinez (Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Camila Cabello), Michael Bearden (Lady Gaga) and a six-piece horn section. 

Pre-sale tickets for the event will go live on Thursday (Jan. 26) at 10 a.m. ET, with a public on-sale on Friday (Jan. 27) at 10 a.m. ET here. David Crosby Was Working on New Music on the Day He Died: ‘He Hadn’t Lost the Fire’

David Crosby was working on new music until the end. In an interview with Variety, guitarist Steve Postell said that the 81 year-old two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame veteran who died last week at 81 was talking about his new album on the day he died.

“David didn’t think he was gonna last for years, which he joked about all the time. But there was no sense that we weren’t gonna be able to do this show and these tours,” Postell told Variety. “We were talking tour buses, and what kind of venues, and the whole team was all back together again — the road manager and tour manager and sound guys — on top of this band we’d put together. There was not even a remote sense that we weren’t about ready to hit the world. And it’s a shame people didn’t get to hear it. This was something else. This was as close to the original thing” — specifically, the original sound of Crosby, Stills and Nash — “as we were gonna get. It was very powerful.”

Postell had been speaking on the phone with Crosby near the end after taking part in an “intimate” rehearsal in Santa Barbara the week before Crosby died; that was the follow to a full-band rehearsal in mid-December at which Postell said Crosby seemed “practically giddy with all of it.” During the latter, Crosby reportedly showed his band some new songs, asking them what they thought of the lyrics and proving that he “hadn’t lost the fire. I’d like people to know that he was on it. He was writing, playing, singing his ass off and preparing a fantastic show. That’s what he was doing. He was not lying in a bed for two years, out of it. That’s not what happened at all.”

In a testament to Crosby’s enduring love of playing and writing, Postell said he was talking to the singer on the phone on Wednesday morning discussing plans for a two-night run in Santa Barbara at the Lobero Theatre in late February that they were considering recording for a live album; Crosby’s death was announced on Thursday (Jan. 19).

The shows would have been Crosby’s first live gigs since 2019 and after spending Wednesday afternoon rehearsing the full set list they’d worked out, Postell said he texted the singer with some ideas that night and got a return text from Crosby son and bandmate, James Raymond, that his dad had died.

Though Crosby was eager to get back on the road after announcing in 2022 that he was done performing live, Postell said the CSN star was having difficulty with arthritis in his hands and could still play, but it had “gotten harder and harder for him.”

Another musician who had been working with Crosby on new material, Texas singer-songwriter Sarah Jarosz, told Variety that she’d recorded some vocals remotely and sent them to James Raymond and that Raymond told her after his father’s death that Crosby had listened to the tapes and appreciated her work.

“I never got to actually be in the studio with him when I was recording those vocals,” Jarosz said. “But he and James had reached out to me about a month ago saying they were working on this new album, and he really wanted me to sing on a new song, ‘Talk Till Dawn.’ It had just been a few days since I sent the vocal off [before Crosby died], but the way James made it seem to me is that he did get to hear it before he passed, which is obviously extremely emotional for me. I guess the way that I would describe the song is quintessential David Crosby —interesting chord movement and just a beautiful, stunning vocal performance.”

Sebastian Yatra Leads 2023 Premio Lo Nuestro Nominations: Complete List

Amid the current musical reign of Bad Bunny, Colombian pop star Sebastian Yatra leaps forward with 10 nominations to the 35th edition of the Premio Lo Nuestro awards. Univision announced on Monday (Jan. 23) the complete list of nominations and hosts for the show, which will air live from the Miami-Dade Arena on Feb. 23.

Sebastian Yatra’s nods include the coveted all-genre artist of the year, song of the year and album of the year categories. He is also nominated for tour of the year — which returned this year by popular demand, according to the organizers — and other pop categories. His PLN-nominated album Dharma (2022) peaked at No. 2 on Latin Pop Albums and No. 13 on Top Latin Albums, among other Billboard chart achievements.

He is closely followed by Bad Bunny, Camilo, Becky G and Grupo Firme, who each garnered nine nods; urbano household names Maluma, Daddy Yankee and Ozuna take eight each. Beloved couple Rauw Alejandro and Rosalía tie with seven, as well as Carin León, Karol G and J Balvin.

Aside from topping the list, Yatra will co-host the longest-running Latin music ceremony alongside TV presenter and actress Alejandra Espinoza, Mexican pop superstar Paulina Rubio, and Adrián Uribe of Univision’s late-night show De Noche Pero Sin Sueño.  

In total, 192 artists across diverse musical backgrounds are nominated within 39 categories. The nominations for Premio Lo Nuestro are based on Uforia radio airplay during the eligibility period of Oct. 1, 2021 through Sept. 30, 2022. Streaming counts and the assessment of a committee of music and entertainment experts also factor in this list. 

Starting today, fans can vote for their favorite artists on PremioLoNuestro.com, until Sunday, Feb. 5. 

This year’s theme is “El Mundo Es Lo Nuestro” (or The World is Ours), and the 35th annual award show will broadcast live on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. ET. It will simulcast on Galavisión in the U.S. and Canal 5 in Mexico.

Adam Lambert Describes His Reaction to Homophobia in Early Career: ‘Be Flamboyant and Be Wild’

In the midst of his early 2009 run on American Idol, Adam Lambert remembered thinking during auditions that the judges were never going to pick him because, “I’m the gay guy. This is a pipe dream.” The singer who placed second to Kris Allen that season after a memorable run during which Lambert made a name for himself by bringing unique spins on songs by Johnny Cash and Tears For Fears, described his decision to lean into his true self while accepting an award at the 2023 Creative Coalition Spotlight Initiative Gala on Saturday (Jan. 21).

According to EW, the 40-year-old solo singer and Queen frontman discussed the homophobia he faced early in his career, describing his thoughts about making that season’s finale. “I couldn’t believe it. I mean, I had no idea that it would go that long. And then once I got off the show, I got signed a record contract. There was an Entertainment Weekly article that was like, ‘Oh, this guy’s exciting, and it may or not be because he might be gay.’ And I was like, ‘Might be?!’”

Lambert said he then began a “very interesting journey” through the music industry in which he felt like there were “no gay guys. It was kind of the Wild West in terms of that.” Lambert also described the iconic moment during the Nov. 2010 American Music Awards on the eve of his first single’s release when he thought he was doing the same thing he’d been doing since he was a teenager.

“I was kind of sexy, and had dancers on stage, and I did a couple of suggestive moves with a couple of dancers, and an impromptu kiss with my bass player. I was feeling it. Well, I got off stage and I got in trouble. The network was like, ‘How dare you?’ They banned me for a while,” he said. “They threatened me with a lawsuit. It was like, ‘Oh, okay, that’s where we’re at.’ I didn’t know. I’d been in a bubble in L.A. amongst artists, weirdos, and I didn’t realize that that kind of thing would ruffle feathers the way it did.”

Instead of shrinking away and hiding his true self, Lambert said he thought the best move was to lean in and, “be as gay as I f—ing can be. And be flamboyant and be wild, and if it gets me into trouble, it gets me in trouble, but I’m not going to back down from it.” In the years since, said Lambert, he’s seen how his decision has played out and it makes him proud.

“Over the past few years, I keep meeting more and more young people that saw me when we were a kid on TV and they’re like…’You helped me talk to my parents about being gay,” he said. Lambert was on hand to receive an honor at the Creative Coalition’s annual Sundance Film Festival gala, presented by his Fairyland co-star, Cody Fern, who also appears in the 1970s drama about a teen girl with two dads.
