How Have Soul Train Album of the Year Winners Fared at the Grammys?

Next year could be a watershed moment for contemporary R&B at the Grammys, particularly in the General Field. With SZA leading all nominees at the 2024 Grammy Awards with nine nods and Victoria Monét (seven) and Coco Jones (five) right on her heels, a new class of R&B powerhouses is looking to make a major splash on Music’s Biggest Night.

At the top of 2023, Beyoncé became the most-awarded act in Grammy history thanks to her triumph in best dance/electronic album for her seismic Renaissance album. That same record — which won three additional Grammys and spawned a pair of Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hits — reigned victorious at the Soul Train Awards, where it secured the “Cuff It” singer her fourth album of the year win at the ceremony.

The Soul Train Music Awards launched in 1987 with a star-studded ceremony co-hosted by Dionne Warwick and Luther Vandross. Intended to celebrate the best in R&B, soul, rap, jazz, and gospel music, the Soul Train Music Awards predate any Grammy categories honoring rap and R&B albums. The Recording Academy introduced best R&B album (along with such other “genre album” awards as best pop album, best rock album and best country album) in 1995, with best rap album arriving the following year.

So, just how often do the winners of the Soul Train Music Award for album of the year sync up with the Grammy winners for best R&B album, best progressive R&B album and best rap album? While Soul Train cannot always be used as a proper precursor there is certainly considerable overlap between the two shows.

Every Soul Train Music Awards ceremony since 1995 — barring 2020 — has found the show’s album of the year winner getting, at the very least, a nod in its respective genre category at the corresponding Grammy ceremony. There have been 15 instances in which the Soul Train album of the year winner won the Grammy for their respective genre category. But there’s a catch.

For the the ceremony’s first nine years (1987-1996), album of the year was split into male, female, and group, with additional categories for rap, jazz and gospel albums. From 1997 to 2003, the awards were consolidated into a single R&B/soul or rap album of the year category. In 2004, Soul Train experimented with dropping genre specifications, presenting an award simply titled “album of the year.” They returned to the male, female, group split from 2005 to 2007, ultimately settling on one album of the year category from 2009 onwards.

Here’s some more Soul Train Music Awards lore: the 2008 ceremony was canceled due to the 2007-08 Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike. Luckily, the 2023 WGA strike ended in time for this year’s Soul Train Music Awards.

This year’s Soul Train album of the year nominees are SZA (SOS), Victoria Monét (Jaguar II), Coco Jones (What I Didn’t Tell You – Deluxe), Babyface (Girls Night Out – Extended), Burna Boy (I Told Them…), Ari Lennox (age/sex/location), Janelle Monáe (The Age of Pleasure) and Summer Walker (Clear 2: Soft Life – EP).

The 2023 Soul Train Music Awards will air on Sunday, Nov. 26, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on BET and BET Her. SZA, Summer Walker and Usher lead all nominees with nine nods each.

Here’s a brief overview of which albums have triumphed at both the Soul Train Music Awards and the Grammys.

Brian Jonestown Massacre Tour of Australia Canceled Following Bizarre Onstage Fight

Brian Jonestown Massacre has abruptly ended its tour of Australia, following an intra-band fracas that broke out onstage earlier in the week, video for which has gone viral.

Anton Newcombe’s psychedelic rock outfit has canceled the last leg of its 11-date tour, which was scheduled to wrap-up Friday night (Nov. 24) at University of Wollongong UniBar, in New South Wales, with The Laurels in support.

Eight of those shows were sell-outs, including the scrapped dates Wednesday at Theatre Royal, Castlemaine, and Thursday at Northcote Theatre, Melbourne.

There is no official statement to share at this time, a rep for the tour promoters, Principal Entertainment, tells Billboard. Though it’s easy to draw a conclusion.

During the band’s gig Tuesday (Nov. 21) at The Forum Melbourne, their ninth show on their swing Down Under, Newcombe and his revolving cast of bandmates became unstruck in a bizarre — and very public — display.

In fan-filmed clips doing the rounds of social media, Newcombe is seen rumbling with guitarist Ryan Van Kriedt after telling him to leave the stage.

“Cut off this guy’s mic, put down my guitar, party’s over captain,” Newcombe remarked, adding: “get to f***. we actually don’t need you. Go. Put my guitar down on the stage and think about what’s happening. Unplug.”

Van Kriedt can be heard saying: “You better think about this one, man. Because this is forever,” before putting his guitar down and wandering offstage.

Push then came to shove. Newcombe hit Van Kriedt over the head with a guitar, escalating a scuffle that saw security step in and call off the concert. “Undefeated, god bless this country,” Newcombe told the audience, as the house lights went on, the curtains fell and boos rang out.

As frontman of Brian Jonestown Massacre, Newcombe is 20 studio albums deep into a career, one in which commercial success has been outweighed by his reputation for unpredictable and eccentric behavior.

To most casual fans, Newcombe is best remembered for his colorful, central role in DIG!, the 2004 documentary which follows the love-hate relationship between the frontmen of Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols, and the bands’ contrasting career trajectories.

Brian Jonestown Massacre is touring in support of 2023’s The Future is Your Past, released locally through A Recordings/MGM Australia.

‘Merrily We Roll Along’ Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s Cast Albums Chart

The new Broadway cast recording of Merrily We Roll Along debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s Cast Albums chart (dated Nov. 25). The show stars Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez – all of whom have been a part of at least one top 10-charting Cast Album previously. (Groff, notably, performs on both the Nos. 1 and 2 titles on the latest Cast Albums chart – as Merrily We Roll Along bumps Hamilton: An American Musical from the top slot down to No. 2.)

Billboard’s Top Cast Albums chart ranks the top-selling musical cast recordings of the week in the U.S., based on traditional album sales, as tracked by Luminate. The new Cast Albums chart dated Nov. 25 reflects the sales week ending Nov. 16.

Merrily We Roll Along has music and lyrics written by Stephen Sondheim, with a book by George Furth, based on the play of the same name by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1981 for a brief run, and the 2023 production is its first revival on Broadway. It’s slated to run through March 24, 2024.

The new iteration began off-Broadway in 2022 at the New York Theatre Workshop, with the same leading cast, and played through Jan. 22, 2023. It then began previews on Broadway at the Hudson Theatre on Sept. 19, and officially opened on Oct. 10.

Groff has now been a part of three No. 1s on Billboard’s Cast Albums chart: Merrily We Roll Along, and the original Broadway cast recordings of Hamilton: An American Musical (2015) and Spring Awakening (released in 2006, peaked at No. 1 in 2007). He’s also been a part of the top 10-charting albums A New Brain (2015 New York cast recording; No. 3 in 2016), Little Shop of Horrors (the new cast recording; No. 7, 2021). Groff won a Grammy Award for best musical theater album for Hamilton, and garnered a second nomination for the same category for Little Shop of Horrors.

Radcliffe starred in the 2011 Broadway revival of How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, which saw its cast recording reach No. 2 that same year. He also scored a Grammy nomination for best musical theater album for the project.

As for Mendez, she’s appeared on five top 10-charting sets on Cast Albums: Grease (the new 2007 Broadway cast recording, No. 4), Everyday Rapture (original Broadway cast recording; No. 8, 2010), Dogfight (original cast recording; No. 2, 2013), Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel (2018 Broadway cast recording; No. 2, 2013), Godspell (the new 2012 Broadway cast recording; No. 1) and now Merrily We Roll Along. Mendez also scored a Grammy nom for best musical theater album, for Carousel.

The Beatles’ compilation albums 1962-1966 and 1967-1970 (also known as the Red and Blue Albums, owed to the distinctive cover art), re-enter Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated Nov. 25) at Nos. 6 and 5, respectively, following their expanded reissue on Nov. 10.

The titles sold 22,000 and 24,000 in the week ending Nov. 16 in the U.S., according to Luminate. Each told sold less than 500 copies in the previous week. For both titles, it is their largest sales week since the week ending Dec. 24, 1994, when they sold 37,000 and 40,000, respectively.

Upon their original release in 1973, the 1962-1966 album contained 26 songs, while 1967-1970 held 28 tunes. (On the Billboard 200 chart, 1967-1970 reached No. 1, while 1962-1966 peaked at No. 3.) For the 2023 reissue, 21 songs were added to the two albums — 12 songs on 1962-1966 and nine on 1967-1970. The latter’s additional cuts include the recently released new single “Now and Then,” which debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 – marking the Fab Four’s 35th top 10-charting hit.

The two albums were available to purchase as a digital download, a double-CD or three-vinyl LP set. They were also combined into a singular boxed set – 1962-1970 – that contained all of the material, and available only as a four-CD or six-vinyl LP box. (The box debuts at No. 24 on Top Album Sales with 7,000 sold.)

Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

Top Rock & Alternative Albums, Top Rock Albums and Catalog Albums rank the week’s most popular rock and alternative, rock, and catalog (older) albums across all genres, by equivalent album units. Vinyl Album tallies the week’s top-selling vinyl releases. Tastemaker Albums measures the top-selling titles at independent and small chain record stores. Top Current Album Sales ranks the week’s top-selling new/current albums (non-catalog/older titles).

Elsewhere in the top 10 of the new Top Album Sales chart, Stray Kids’ ROCK-STAR debuts at No. 1 with 213,000 copies sold, Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) is a non-mover at No. 2 with 69,000 sold (down 43%), while Chris Stapleton’s Higher launches at No. 3 with 57,000.

After debuting at No. 1 a week ago, Jung Kook’s Golden falls to No. 4 with 34,000 sold (down 79%). Aespa’s Drama: The 4th Mini Album starts at No. 7 with 18,000 sold. Lana Del Rey’s Lust for Life re-enters at No. 8 with 14,000 sold (up from less than 500 sold the week previous) following a new color vinyl pressing. Rounding out the top 10 is the debut of AJR’s The Maybe Man at No. 9 with 13,000 and Jimmy Buffett’s Equal Strain On all Parts, falling 3-10 in its second week with nearly 13,000 sold (down 75%).

In the week ending Nov. 16, there were 2.302 million albums sold in the U.S. (up 11% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 1.93 million (up 16.9%) and digital albums comprised 372,000 (down 11.9%).

There were 956,000 CD albums sold in the week ending Nov. 16 (up 20.2% week-over-week) and 964,000 vinyl albums sold (up 14.1%). Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 30.998 million (up 2.3% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 40.395 million (up 18.1%).

Overall year-to-date album sales total 88.134 million (up 6.3% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 71.877 million (up 10.6%) and digital album sales total 16.257 million (down 9.5%).

Nadine Coyle, Kimberley Walsh, Nicole Roberts and Cheryl revealed that their world tour will be in celebration of the group’s late fifth member, Sarah Harding, who died after a battle with breast cancer in 2021.

“Announcing our #TheGirlsAloudShow arena tour next May/June 2024. A celebration of Sarah, our music & our incredible fans,” the group wrote on X, alongside a teaser video.

“I swear to God, I cannot for the life of me remember how we even came to this decision,” Nadine told Vogue of the announcement. “I just remember diaries being sent through and thinking, ‘Oh well, here we are!’ Suddenly I’m getting all these emails about flying around the roof of the O2 again.”

“Just don’t call it a comeback,” Cheryl added “I see it more as a celebration of a milestone. And listen: it’s gonna be unreal. And it’s gonna be the nostalgia of your life.”

The BRIT Award-winning group came together on the TV talent show Popstars: The Rivals in 2002, and went on to achieve 21 top 10 singles on the Official U.K. Singles Chart and six top 10 albums. Throughout their career, the act released five studio albums and two greatest hits projects. Of those, all but one reached the top 10 in the U.K., and two of them topped the survey.

Miley Cyrus Sings ‘Flowers’ Live for the First Time & Debuts New Track in Private Performance Videos

Miley Cyrus has finally given “Flowers” its live debut, almost 10 months since it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The 30-year-old gave an intimate, invite-only performance at Los Angeles’ famed Chateau Marmont hotel on Tuesday night, and during her set, she also teased a brand-new song.

Cyrus took the stage dressed in a fitted black gown, engaging with the audience and providing funny ad libs to the track — “Match the roses that you left… now they’re dead!” and “Then remembered I… I don’t know how you guys can sing along while recording!” — during the performance.

Cyrus also performed a new song during the set. While the track does not yet have a title, she passionately sings, “Don’t know if it’s ever gonna stop/ I wouldn’t mind if it don’t/ Don’t leave me high/ Don’t let me down/ ‘Cause I want you more.”

It’s surprising that “Flowers” is just now getting its live debut, though Cyrus revealed back in May that she does not have any interest in touring at the moment. “I can’t,” she told British Vogue, calling stadium and arena performances “isolating” and “not natural.” “Not only ‘can’t’, because ‘can’t’ is your capability, but my desire. Do I want to live my life for anyone else’s pleasure or fulfillment other than my own?”

She followed up her comments with a message posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, on May 24, telling her fans she loves them despite not hitting the road. “Even if I don’t see them face to face every night at a concert, my fans are felt deeply in my heart,” she wrote. “This has nothing to do with a lack of appreciation for the fans & everything to do with I simply don’t want to get ready in a locker room, which is the reality of life on the road.”

UMG Germany Goes 10 for 10 on the Country’s Album Chart With Taylor Swift, Beatles & More

Usually, when one says a label dominates an album chart, that means it has most of the top ten — seven, for example, or maybe sometimes eight. This week in Germany, however, UMG has all 10.

This seems to be the first time this has happened in Germany, although it is hard to say this authoritatively, since both the charts, as well as the underlying business, have changed so much.

The 10 albums that occupy the top of the chart are very different: German rappers Kontra K and Shirin David come in at No. 1 and No. 4, respectively; albums from K-pop stars Stray Kids and Jung Kook come in at No. 2 and 10; The Rolling Stones are No. 3; The Beatles occupy Nos. 5, 6 and 7 (with the “blue album,” the “red album” and a deluxe box set of the “red” and “blue” albums); Taylor Swift is No. 8, with 1989 (Taylor’s Version); and the band Santiano comes in at No. 9. Konta K also has the No. 1 single in the country this week with “Die Sonne,” a collaboration with SANTOS.

Scoring all 10 albums on the top 10 is “likely unparalleled in the history of the German album charts and is a great example of our entire team effort with our amazing artists,” Frank Briegmann, chairman/CEO of Universal Music Central Europe and Deutsche Grammophon, told the German music trade magazine Muzikwoche. “I find it particularly remarkable that we can find our domestic as well as our international acts from a wide variety of genres at the top of the charts.”

Germany still sells more physical product than any other major market, which is one reason why legacy acts like the Stones and the Beatles chart higher than they do elsewhere in Europe. The country’s charts are also calculated in a way that assigns more weight to higher-priced packages, such as vinyl box sets.

Jack Harlow Snags Third Streaming Songs Leader With ‘Lovin on Me’

Jack Harlow has his third No. 1 on Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart thanks to “Lovin on Me,” which debuts atop the ranking dated Nov. 25.

In the tracking week of Nov. 10-16, “Lovin on Me” earned 22.2 million official U.S. streams, according to Luminate. That’s in its first week of release, though prior to its premiere, the tune was teased via a snippet on TikTok.

“Lovin on Me” becomes Harlow’s third No. 1 on Streaming Songs. He first reigned on the co-billed “Industry Baby” alongside Lil Nas X for two weeks in August 2021, followed by three weeks atop the list with “First Class” beginning in April 2022. All three debuted at No. 1.

Concurrently, Harlow arrives at No. 1 on the multi-metric Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts. In addition to its streams, the song earned 12.2 million radio audience impressions and 13,000 downloads.

“Lovin on Me” is Harlow’s third ruler on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, again following “Industry Baby” and “First Class.” The same three songs have also ruled Hot Rap Songs.

The song also becomes his third No. 1 on R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs and Rap Streaming Songs.

As previously reported, “Lovin on Me” debuts at No. 2 on the all-format Billboard Hot 100. It’s his second top five of 2023, following the No. 5 debut and peak of the Jung Kook co-bill “3D” in October.

“Lovin on Me” is currently a standalone single from Harlow. His most recent album, Jackman., debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 dated May 13 and has earned 129,000 equivalent album units to date.
