Shaboozey, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”

Trending on Billboard

Shaboozey has been in the headlines and gaining traction thanks to his work on songs on Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter project. He follows with this mesh of perfect singalong melodies, acoustic guitar, horns and handclaps on this tip of the hat to boozy bar escapades. From his viral hit “Let It Burn” earlier this year, to his latest outing, this artist-writer knows how to craft a memorable song. This single, lifting from J-Kwon’s 2004 smash “Tipsy,” previews his album Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going, out May 31.

Trisha Yearwood, “Put It in a Song

Yearwood debuted this ballad on the recent CMT Music Awards, by performing it with its co-writers, Erin Enderlin and Jim “Moose” Brown. Yearwood’s vocal is pristine as always, never overpowering a lyric but collecting every nuance on this gorgeous song. Not unlike one of Yearwood’s signature hits, 1993’s “The Song Remembers When,” this song nods to the power of music to serve as a keeper and vessel for any number of emotion-stirring memories, from heartbreak to love.

Morgan Wade, “Time to Love, Time To Kill”

From Wade’s upcoming Aug. 16 album Obsessed comes this stellar preview. Like all of the songs on Obsessed, Wade is the sole writer here, depicting the hazy moments of a relationship’s conclusion in visceral detail. Though they’ve each vocalized their intent to move on, as she sings in the song, “The truth is I’m at the starting line/ Just waiting on you.” As on previous songs, including her breakthrough hit “Wilder Days,” Wade’s voice crackles with unfiltered honesty, managing to be simultaneously sweet and bitingly truthful.

Connie Smith, Love, Prison, Wisdom and Heartaches

On Friday (April 12), Smith surprise-released her new album Love, Prison, Wisdom and Heartaches, which pays homage to songs from country artists including Dottie West, George Jones and Loretta Lynn. She also includes a rendering of the 1970 Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner song “Once More,” her crystal-clear voice bolstered by steel guitars, fiddle and superb harmonies. Her take on “One of These Days,” originally recorded by the Glaser Brothers, highlights her soaring vocal, while elsewhere, she offers versions of Merle Haggard’s “The Fugitive” and Lynn’s “World of Forgotten People.” The album also marks the late pianist Hargus “Pig” Robbins’ final recording with Smith prior to his passing in 2022. Smith’s voice is still an instrument of formidable power and style, while this gorgeous record is an essential listen for fans of old-school country.

Riley Green, “Jesus Saves”

From his new seven-song EP Way Out Here, Green delves here into the life story of a homeless man and Army veteran who regularly sits by the side of a road, holding up sign emblazoned with “Jesus Saves.” A solo write from Green, this story also puts some of his most poignant songwriting on display. He chronicles the series of life twists that led the man to the side of the road: by the time he was eight, his father had left and his mother had died. The young boy grew up to join the military and headed off to war but upon returning, as the lyrics portray, “my whole world didn’t love me anymore.” From there, “Jesus Saves” traces a downward spiral of lost jobs, tragedies and broken relationships, all the while calling for compassion. This is undoubtedly one of Green’s new set’s strongest tracks.

Kimmi Bitter, “I Can’t Unlove You”

Like the bulk of Bitter’s new album Old School, “I Can’t Unlove You” is immersed in a detailed study of 1960s countrypolitan sounds, from the Jordannaires-esque harmonies to the hushed percussion. Meanwhile, Bitter possesses a smooth, polished vocal that unmistakably draws comparisons to the late Patsy Cline (or even, to a much lesser extent, “Blue”-era LeAnn Rimes). Bitter and her musical cohorts on the album, most notably writer-producer Michael Gurley, fashion a superb vintage sound, but smartly meld it with original songs.

Tanner Adell, “Whiskey Blues”

Adell surged to mainstream attention with her album Buckle Bunny and, like Shaboozey, is currently enjoying a rush of attention thanks to her inclusion on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter. In her newly released song, she’s hellbent on (but not quite succeeding at) getting an ex-lover off her mind. The pop-country hybrid is catchy and polished, led by Adell’s airy, sparkling vocal, and a swirl of radio-ready production.

The Wilder Blue, “I’m Your Man”

This versatile Texas quintet lays deep into ’90s honky-tonk on this toe-tappin’, flirty barn burner that makes the most of their tight-knit harmonies and top-notch lead vocals from frontman Zane Williams. They are part of Luke Combs’s current Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old Tour, having previously featured Combs on a cover version of the Eagles’ “Seven Bridges Road.”

Dua Lipa Reveals She’s Been Planning ‘Radical Optimism’ Since Before Her First Album Came Out

Dua Lipa‘s Radical Optimism has been a long, long time coming. In the 28-year-old pop star’s TIME cover story published Monday (April 15), she revealed that she’s been planning out her new album for years — before she even made her musical debut, in fact.

“Since I was very little, I’ve jotted down things I dreamt for myself,” she told the publication. “I’ve always planned ahead. Although surprises arise that I evaluate in the moment, there’s always a long-term goal.”

One of those goals was Radical Optimism, which she’s been conceptualizing since before her self-titled debut record arrived in 2017. “I remember when I was working on my first album, I was making notes on what my third album was going to be,” she revealed. “It’s mad to think about, but I remember speaking to my close friend and A&R Joe [Kentish], ‘Maybe album three, I could work with [Tame Impala’s] Kevin Parker,’ and he was like, ‘Alright, hold your horses, let’s take baby steps.’”

Trending on Billboard

By the time she was three albums deep into her career, she’d hoped that “maybe I’d be deserving to be in a room with an artist I so deeply admire and look up to,” Lipa recalled thinking at the time.

Seven years later, Radical Optimism‘s collaborators include Parker as well as Caroline Ailin, Danny L Harle and Tobias Jesso Jr. Led by singles “Houdini,” “Training Season” and “Illusion,” the 11-track set arrives May 3.

“The record as a whole is more mature,” the Grammy winner said of the new project. “I’m definitely not the same person I was when I wrote my first album. I’ve evolved and learned so much … taking it as it comes, not seeing anything as bad or something as a setback. That involves a lot of growing and understanding myself, knowing my worth, whether it be in business, love, or friendship.”

“I’m just a different person, so of course this record is going to be different,” she added. “I have different thoughts, wants, needs and perspectives. I’ve done a 180 on myself … I feel the most confident at this point in my life.”

The new interview comes one day after Saturday Night Live announced that the “Levitating” singer would be serving as both the host and musical guest for the show’s May 4 episode. Sharing the news on Instagram, Lipa wrote, “DOUBLE DUTY DUA!!!!!!!!”

The Argylle star also recently dropped the summery music video for her third Radical Optimism single “Illusion,” filmed at the Piscina Municipal de Montjuïc in Barcelona, Spain, with dancers, high divers and synchronized swimmers. “It’s about knowing what you’re getting yourself into, but staying for the hell of it,” she said of the track in a statement at the time.

“The joke’s on them,” she added. “It’s the fun of playing someone at their own game because ultimately you won’t fall for an illusion.”

Day is gearing up for the release of her highly anticipated third album, CASSANDRA (cherith), which is scheduled to arrive May 10 through Warner Records. On Thursday (April 11), she released her new single “Chasing.”

Earlier this year, Day officially added herself to a historic line of annual pre-Super Bowl performances by singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” at the 2024 Super Bowl, held at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium on Feb. 11.

Day, who received an Oscar nomination three years ago for her lead performance in The United States vs. Billie Holiday, also performed “Memory Lane” during the 2024 NAACP Image Awards at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium in March.

50 Cent Fully Supports Kesha Changing ‘Tik Tok’ Lyric to Diss Diddy at Coachella: ‘Like 50 Told Her To Say That!’

Kesha seriously turned heads when she made a surprise cameo during Reneé Rapp‘s set at Coachella, joining the Mean Girls star for a collaboration on her 2009 breakthrough hit, “Tik Tok.” The song that famously pays tribute to Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger (and partying very hard) opens with the iconic line “wake up in the mornin’ feelin’ like P Diddy.”

But in the wake of a raft of allegations of sexual assault and abuse aimed at the Bad Boy Records founder (born Sean Combs) — whose homes in Miami and L.A were raided last month by officers with the Homeland Security bureau in connection with an ongoing federal sex trafficking investigation — Kesha subtly, but pointedly, tweaked the line from her Animals album.

“Wake up in the mornin’ like, ‘F— P. Diddy,’” Kesha sang alongside Rapp, with both pop stars tossing up a middle finger at the same time. Kesha doubled-down later in the night, tweeting out the line as well, just in case anyone missed the reference. In November, shortly after the first stories of Diddy’s alleged actions came to light, Kesha removed the rapper’s name from “Tik Tok” during a performance in Los Angeles.

Trending on Billboard

The lyrical lambasting was not lost on one of Diddy’s chief hip-hop mogul antagonists, 50 Cent, who has been relentlessly trolling the former Revolt boss over his legal issues in his signature snarky social posts. Above a video repost of the moment, 50 took yet another opportunity to poke at Diddy, writing, “LOL she said [middle finger emoji] Fvck P DIDDY, HAHAAHAHA [eyeball emoji] PUFFY LIKE 50 TOLD HER TO SAY THAT!”

Combs has kept a low profile since the mogul’s former girlfriend, singer Cassie, filed a lawsuit in November accusing the hip-hop entrepreneur of years of abuse and one accusation of rape. The lawsuit alleged that she had “endured over a decade of his violent behavior and disturbed demands,” including repeated beatings and forcing her to “engage in sex acts with male sex workers”; the suit was settled a day later. Diddy has denied any wrongdoing and in a social post after the Cassie settlement he lashed out at the “sickening allegations,” which his lawyer dubbed a “witch hunt.”

Diddy has also been accused of a “gang rape” of a teen in 2003 in a separate lawsuit, as well as sexual assault and sex trafficking in another lawsuit from music producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones Jr.

In December, 50 said he was working on a documentary through his G-Unit Films division about the history of sexual misconduct allegations against Diddy, with 50 promising to donate proceeds to help victims of sexual assault. At press time there was no update on that project.

Lauryn Hill Joined By Wyclef For Mini Fugees Reunion During Coachella Set By Son YG Marley

It was a family affair on Sunday (April 14) at Coachella when Lauryn Hill surprised attendees at her son YG Marley’s afternoon set with a run through a few of her solo classics, as well as an unexpected get-together with Fugees bandmate Wyclef for a run through their group’s beloved hits.

Wearing an orange-and-black suit and rocking white beads in her hair, Hill walked out on stage and hugged her second-born son before dropping into The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill solo hit “Ex-Factor,” with Marley running around the stage adding ad-libs throughout.

Hill continued with a fierce dancehall-spiked performance of her debut album’s “Lost Ones,” followed by an on-stage reunion with her Fugees bandmate Wyclef Jean for collaborations on their group’s beloved hits, including “Killing Me Softly,” “Ready or Not” and “Fu-Gee-La”; their third Fugees mate, Pras, did not make an appearance, though YG did justice to his parts while filling in on “Ready or Not.” The family also paid tribute to YG’s late grandfather, reggae superstar Bob Marley, with bits of “One Love” and “Exodus.”

Those who posted up at the Main Stage early also got another surprise when Busta Rhymes and his trusty hype man, Spliff Star, hopped up to blitz through Busta’s hits, “Put Your Hand Where My Eyes Could See” as well as his verse from Chris Brown’s “Look At Me Now.”

It was just one of many surprise cameos from Sunday’s star-studded lineup, which also had headliner Doja Cat roping A$AP Rocky, 21 Savage and Teezo Touchdown in for her festival-wrapping set, Will Smith making a surprise appearance during J Balvin’s performance and Justin Bieber hitting the stage with Tems and Wizkid for “Essence.” In addition, Bebe Rexha was joined by David Guetta for their dance smash “I’m Good (Blue),” DJ Snake’s set included pop-ins from Robin S. and Peso Pluma and Lil Yachty tapped indie rocker Mac DeMarco.

Drake Disses Kendrick Lamar & More On Leaked New Song “Push Ups (Drop and Give Me 50),” Social Media Reacts

After weeks of fans dissecting the Big 3, Drake has responded to Kendrick Lamar’s “Like That” diss.

Despite a rough cut leaking online and Drake still not officially dropping the song on streaming platforms, he’s officially ready to go bar for bar with Kendrick Lamar.

The diss is titled “Push Ups” (Drop & Give Me 50) and references Kendrick Lamar’s TDE contract, which allegedly requires him to give up 50% of his earnings to CEO Top Dawg.

Drake immediately goes at Kendrick in the first verse with some clever wordplay referencing Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers.

“How the f-ck you big steppin’ with a size seven men’s on?” he asks. “The way you doin’ splits, b-tch, your pants might rip.”

He also speaks on Kendrick’s attempts at pop stardom, namely his features for Taylor Swift and Maroon 5.

“Maroon 5 need a verse, you better make it witty / Then we need a verse for the Swifties,” he raps.

Next, he takes aim at The Weeknd, who was caught crooning on Metro Boomin and Future’s We Still Don’t Trust You with bars like “Y’all n-gga manager was Chubbs lil’ blunt runner/Claim the 6ix, and you boys ain’t even come from it/And when you boys got rich, you had to run from it/ Cash blowin’ Abel bread, out here trickin’.”

Rick Ross also joined in on the Drizzy lambasting, so Drake referred to his days as a Corrections Officer and his age, rapping, “I might take your latest girl and cuff her like I’m Ricky/ Can’t believe he jumpin’ in, this n-gga turnin’ fifty/ Every song that made it on the chart, he got from Drizzy.”

Drake also came at Metro Boomin, the mastermind behind the smear campaign, with a straightforward line, “Metro, shut your hoe a-s up and make some drums, n-gga.”

The song has yet to hit streaming services, but see how social media is reacting to the latest chapter of the beef below.

Jelly Roll Has Dropped 70 Pounds While Training For Upcoming 5K: ‘I Feel Really Good’

While many people’s New Year’s resolutions to hit the gym more often have long since fallen by the wayside, Jelly Roll seems to be sticking to his commitment. Speaking to People magazine, the “Son of a Sinner” singer — who in 2018 shared that he weighed more than 500 pounds in 2015 — said his training for an upcoming charity run has resulted in some serious weight loss.

“I’m probably down 70-something pounds,” the 39-year-old star told the magazine. “I’ve been really kicking ass, man. I’m doing two to three miles a day, four to six days a week. I’m doing 20 to 30 minutes in the sauna, six minutes in a cold plunge every day. I’m eating healthy right now.”

Trending on Billboard

The hardcore training is taking place as Jelly is gearing up to participate in comedians Bert Kreischer and Tom Segura’s May 7 2 Bears 5K run at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The event presented by Netflix is a Joke Fest and Por Osos has given Jelly Roll something to work towards and he said he’s very happy with the progress he’s made. “I feel really good. I was thinking, I plan on losing another 100, 100-and-something [pounds],” he said. “If I feel this good down this weight, man, I can only imagine what I’m going to feel like by the time I go on tour.”

Back in January, Jelly posted a video of his daily training walks and his challenge to himself to do the 5K. “I’m ready to go,” he said at the time. A month later, he spoke to People and said he wasn’t trying to out-run anyone, just do the best he can. “I don’t know if ‘running’ is going to be the word, but I’m definitely going to get the 3.1 miles done — probably a brisk power walk,” he said. “My goal is to be able to do a 15-minute mile.”

He noted at the time that his beloved wife, Bunnie Xo, would likely be there to support him, but not walk alongside because they move at a different pace. “Poor thing, she’d have to walk so slow compared to how fast she does 3.1 miles,” he joked. “For me, a 15-minute mile, [I’m] going to be huffing it a little bit. For Bunnie, a 15-minute mile is her sauntering.”

The singer who recently won three iHeartRadio Music Awards — along with snagging four nominations at the upcoming May 16 ACM Awards — is slated to kick off his Beautifully Broken headlining tour with Warren Zeiders and Alexandra Kay beginning on August 27 at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City. Before that, he will take to the stage of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville on Tuesday (April 16) for a gig with Kelsea Ballerini, Terri Clark and Rhonda Vincent.

Billy Joel Fans Not Feeling Alright After Network Cuts 100th Madison Square Garden Show Broadcast During ‘Piano Man’

Sunday night (April 14) was slated to be a triumphant first for Billy Joel. After half a century in the music business, the Piano Man was headed to prime time for his first-ever broadcast network concert special, The 100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden – The Greatest Arena Run of All Time.

Announced during this year’s Super Bowl and taped on March 28 during Joel’s 100th consecutive performance at the legendary New York city venue, the show was slated to run from 9-11 p.m. on CBS. Unfortunately, the network’s live coverage of the Masters golf tournament pushed back the start of the Joel concert’s airing, which meant that the climactic ending of the show was cut off for many viewers to throw to the local news.

To make matters worse, according to posts from livid viewers, the screen went black at the worst possible time, near the celebratory ending of Joel’s signature sing-along ballad, 1973’s “Piano Man.” “#BillyJoel #MSG #100 concert not only starts a half hour late, but then you cut off the last 3-4 minutes for local news to start at 1130?,” read one rage-filled tweet that opened with a not polite, four-letter salutation to the Tiffany network. “Are you serious. Absolutely pathetic decision making, on an event that’s been advertised for MONTHS, and you f–k it up.”

Trending on Billboard

At press time a spokesperson for CBS had not returned Billboard‘s request for comment about the abrupt cut-away from the broadcast, which some X users compared to the infamous moment in 1968 when NBC jumped from a nail-biter New York Jets/Oakland Raiders football game to switch to children’s movie Heidi.

“CBS has been promoting the Billy Joel concert special every two minutes for WEEKS. So what better way to air it than to preempt it for a half hour and the cut him off MID-PIANO MAN? C’mon guys,” read another annoyed tweet. That same fan further explained that she’d spent “three wonderful years with CBS and I love the network dearly… but as a media professional, I am straight up confounded by this decision.”

In fan video of the moment, Joel is leaning into the denouement of the song, singing, “And the piano it sounds like a carnival/ And the microphone smells like a beer,” amid footage of fans at the MSG show singing along and cheering as the screen abruptly jumps to local news. To be fair, the cut-off came near the end of the final verse, with just a round of choruses, and around a minute, left to go. According to one report, the edit only affected viewers in the Eastern and Central time zones.

While CBS has not issued a statement so far, one of the affected stations offered an apology, with 10 Tampa Bay sport director Evan Closky writing, “As a man who grew up right next to Billy Joel’s hometown, who went to The Last Play at Shea, it was my duty to apologize to everyone about cutting off our telecast of Billy Joel tonight. Not to get into the weeds, but there was a special report after the Masters and it wasn’t accounted for by the powers that be beyond this building.”

Joel will be back at MSG on April 26 and May 9 for two more gigs at his home-away-from-home, before hitting the road this summer for a run of baseball stadium gigs that run through November.

Bebe Rexha, Tems & Justin Bieber, The Rose, Reneé Rapp & Kesha, Plus More: Best Moments of Coachella 2024 Day 3

Day 3 of Coachella 2024 was all about the surprise guest. Find our highlights from J Balvin, DJ Snake, Doja Cat, Victoria Monet, 88Rising, Lil Yachty & more.

Who wants a Sunday surprise?

Day 3 of Coachella 2024 was all about the surprise guest. Honestly, an entirely new, parallel Coachella lineup could be constructed out of the unannounced artists who popped up on stages across the Empire Polo Club grounds on Sunday (April 15).

The night’s headliner alone brought out three guests, with Doja Cat enlisting A$AP Rocky, 21 Savage and Teezo Touchdown for her festival-wrapping set. Then we had Reneé Rapp inviting Kesha to duet on “Tik Tok”; Tems drawing both Wizkid and Justin Bieber out for their “Essence” remix; and J Balvin getting Will Smith back in his Men in Black suit for an otherworldly cameo (more on all three of those major moments below).

In her debut at the festival, Bebe Rexha invited Coachella vet David Guetta to join her for their dance smash “I’m Good (Blue),” DJ Snake invited out both Robin S. and Peso Pluma, and Lil Yachty called on Mac DeMarco (oh, we’ve got all those covered below too).

A few other special guests from Sunday: YG Marley brought out his mother, Lauryn Hill, to perform a series of solo and Fugees hits with her, and they teamed up on a couple of songs by his late grandfather, Bob Marley, as well. (Oh yeah, and Busta Rhymes popped up with YG too, for “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See” and his feature on Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now.”) And if that isn’t enough, Katy Perry was there too! She joined her best friend Mia Moretti for her DJ set on the DoLab Stage.

So much happened beyond all those well-planned surprises though. Below, find Billboard‘s best moments from the third and final day of Coachella 2024 weekend one.

5 Best Moments From Doja Cat’s Proudly Strange Coachella 2024 Headlining Set

While Sunday (April 14) was the coldest night of the first weekend of Coachella 2024 — with many attendees keeping warm by wrapping themselves in silver emergency blankets — you wouldn’t have known it by looking at Doja Cat.

Closing out the festival as its Sunday night headliner, the rapper performed a lot of her show while wearing a white fur two-piece outfit, looking hot in every sense of the word despite the fact that temperatures were in the high 50s and a biting wind was blowing across the polo field.

No matter. With the performance, Doja squashed debate about whether she was a big enough star to headline Coachella — not by pandering to the audience, but just by embracing her signature strangeness. Think playful wigs, a mud pit, a fake Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton, dancing yetis and other elements presented with total dedication to the bit. This performance happened upon an industrial, multi-tiered stage rig built from scaffolding and multiple walkways jutting out into the crowd, a setup upon which Doja and her crew of dancers prowled.

Altogether, they not only filled the space — a significant task on a stage that size — but made it their own. The performance (which was very short on crowd banter) was a touch theatrical, but never felt inauthentic, ultimately functioning as either a reminder of or introduction to Doja’s charisma, talent and oddball sensibilities.

But it wasn’t a greatest-hits set, with Doja totally avoiding smashes like “Woman” and “Say So,” and instead focusing on more recent material, much of it — “Demons,” “Fuck the Girls” “Acknowledge Me,” “Gun” — from her 2023 album, Scarlet, and its deluxe edition, Scarlet 2: CLAUDE, that dropped earlier this month. With the performance, Doja became only the second Black woman to headline Coachella, following Beyoncé’s landmark Beychella set in 2018.

Below, find five of the best moments from her Coachella 2024 headlining show.
