Perrie, Dua Lipa and Sabrina Carpenter Set to Crash U.K. Top 10

Hozier looks set to hold onto the U.K. singles chart title for another week, at least, while Perrie Edwards, Dua Lipa and Sabrina Carpenter are predicted to crash the top 10.

Last Friday, April 12, Hozier topped the chart for the first time in his career with “Too Sweet” (Island), going one better than the No. 2 peak for his signature song “Get Me to the Church” from a decade ago.

According to the Official Charts Company, “Too Sweet” leads the midweek chart, ahead of Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” (Warner Records) and Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” (Columbia/Parkwood Ent), respectively, and is expected to nab a second straight week at No. 1.

Meanwhile, Little Mix’s Perrie has got her solo career off to a strong start with “Forget About Us” (Columbia). It’s new at No. 6 on the Official Chart Update, and could give the British pop artist the top debut for the week. As a member of Little Mix, Perrie has five U.K. No. 1 singles, 19 top 10s and 32 top 40 appearances.

Another chart superstar is close behind, Dua Lipa. The pop singer’s “Illusion” (Warner Records) starts at No. 7 on the Official Chart Update, and should give Lipa a third consecutive top 10 single from her forthcoming album Radical Optimism, due out May 3, and 16th across her career.

U.S. pop singer and actor Sabrina Carpenter could ride a caffeine rush to her first-ever top 10 appearance with “Espresso” (Island). It pours into the chart blast at No. 10. Carpenter has three career top 40 appearances in the U.K., with a best of No. 19 for 2023’s “Feather.”

Finally, Manchester chart heavyweights Oasis could return to the top 40 with “Supersonic” (Big Brother). The Rock Hall nominated group’s debut single this year celebrates its 30th anniversary, and currently sits at No. 14. That’s well up on its peak position of No. 31 following its release back in 1994.

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Singles Chart is published Friday, April 19.

James’ ‘Yummy’ Leads U.K. Albums Chart Race

James takes the lead in the U.K. albums chart race with Yummy, though Mark Knopfler might have a say in the result.

Based on midweek sales and streaming data captured by the Official Charts Company, James is on track for their second U.K. leader and 12th top 10 appearance with Yummy (via Nothing But Love Music), their 18th studio LP. The Manchester indie-rock veterans previously led the national chart back in 1998 with the career retrospective, The Best of James.

Close behind at No. 2 on the Official Chart Update is ex-Dire Straits frontman and guitarist Mark Knopfler’s One Deep River (EMI), currently fewer than 3,000 chart units behind James’ Yummy.

If it continues its flow, One Deep River would become the Englishman’s highest-charting solo album in the U.K., and his ninth solo top 10 LP. As a member of Dire Straits, Knopfler bagged four No. 1 albums.

The guitar great returned to the top 40 on the U.K. singles chart last month with his all-star, charity-fundraising rerecording of “Going Home (Theme from Local Hero)”, which opened at No. 18, besting its original peak position of No. 56 back in 1983.

Beyoncé’s former leader Cowboy Carter (Columbia/Parkwood Ent) is riding to a No. 3 spot.

Meanwhile, British rock act Kris Barras Band is aiming high with Halo Effect (Earache). It’s new at No. 4 on the chart blast, and should it stay put, will become the band’s first top 10 appearance.

Nu-metal favorites Linkin Park is lining up a ninth U.K. top 10 appearance with Papercuts – Singles Collection (2000-2023) (via Warner Records), new at No. 5 on the chart blast.

The new arrivals keep coming with Leeds foursome English Teacher, set to arrive at No. 6 with This Could Be Texas (Island); Scottish rock act Gun with Hombres (Cooking Vinyl), on track for a No. 7 bow; U.S. indie-folk singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers’ Don’t Forget Me (Polydor), targeting a No. 8 arrival; and Future and Metro Boomin’s second collaborative LP We Still Don’t Trust You (Epic/Freebandz/Republic), expected to open its account at No. 10. It’s the followup to the U.S. hip-hop artists’ first collaborative work, We Don’t Trust You, which peaked at No. 2 earlier this month.

Further down the list, fresh releasees from Nia Archives (Silence Is Loud at No. 13 via Island), Girl in Red (I’m Doing It Again Baby! at No. 23 via Columbia), and the Feeling (San Vito at No. 36 via Little World) are eying top 40 berths.

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Albums Chart is published Friday, April 19.

2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees to Be Revealed Live on ‘American Idol’

The 2024 inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will be announced live coast-to-coast during a Rock Hall-themed episode of American Idol on Sunday (April 21).

The inductees will be announced by American Idol host Ryan Seacrest along with judge (and 2022 Rock Hall inductee) Lionel Richie. The episode will air 8-10:01 p.m. ET and 5-7:01 p.m. PT on ABC, with a repeat scheduled for 8-10:01 p.m. PT on the West Coast.

Mariah Carey, a past Idol judge, is among this year’s nominees for the Rock Hall, along with Mary J. Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Eric B. & Rakim, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Jane’s Addiction, Kool & the Gang, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, Sinéad O’Connor, Ozzy Osbourne and A Tribe Called Quest.

In that same episode, Gene Simmons will serve as a guest mentor for the top 14 Idol contenders. Simmons was inducted into the Rock Hall in 2014 as a member of KISS.

Onthe Monday (April 22) episode of Idol, the theme is an Idol perennial: Billboard No. 1 hits. Meghan Trainor will be the guest mentor for that episode. Trainor topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight consecutive weeks in 2014 with “All About That Bass.” That episode will air live on the East Coast from 8-10:01 p.m. and on tape delay on the West Coast in the same time slot.

Upcoming themed episodes include the unveiling of the top 10 (April 28), judges’ song contest (April 29) and Adele night (May 5).

Courtney Love Says Taylor Swift Is ‘Not Interesting as an Artist’

Courtney Love is not a Swiftie.

The Hole frontwoman sat down for an interview with UK publication The Standard recently, where she opened up about which female artists she likes (Patti Smith, Nina Simone, PJ Harvey and Debbie Harry) and which ones she doesn’t, leading with Taylor Swift.

“Taylor is not important. She might be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist,” Love told the outlet, before adding that she’s growing tired of Coachella 2024 headliner Lana Del Rey. “I haven’t liked Lana since she covered a John Denver song, and I think she should really take seven years off,” she said. “Up until ‘Take Me Home Country Roads’ I thought she was great. When I was recording my new album, I had to stop listening to her as she was influencing me too much.”

Lastly, Love said that she’s not a fan of Madonna either. “I don’t like her and she doesn’t like me. I loved Desperately Seeking Susan, but for the city of New York as much as her,” she said.

While Love is quick to criticize the women she doesn’t like, she also has a history for standing up for women in music. Back in March 2023, the 59-year-old rocker wrote an op-ed for the Guardian aimed at the lack of female representation in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The piece, titled, “Why Are Women So Marginalised by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?,” opens with Love describing her lifelong obsession with rock n’ roll by stating, “I got into this business to write great songs and have fun.”

Love said that the 2023 nominations provided another reminder of “just how extraordinary a woman must be to make it into the ol’ boys club,” noting that more women were nominated this year than at any time in the organization’s 40-year history. That group included Kate Bush, Cyndi Lauper, Sheryl Crow and Missy Elliott, as well as the White Stripes’ drummer Meg White and New Order keyboardist Gillian Gilbert.

“If the Rock Hall is not willing to look at the ways it is replicating the violence of structural racism and sexism that artists face in the music industry, if it cannot properly honour what visionary women artists have created, innovated, revolutionised and contributed to popular music – well, then let it go to hell in a handbag,” Love concluded the piece.

Coachella 2024 Expands Asia’s Pop Spotlight With ATEEZ, The Rose, 88rising & More

From YOASOBI and LE SSERAFIM’s sets to the combining of star power thanks to 88rising Futures, the promise of Asian pop music was on full display in Indio.

Historically, Coachella has leaned upon trusted partners to deliver a major “who’s next” artist from Asia when it sets up camp in the desert.

Long-running K-pop label YG Entertainment first landed hip-hop trio Epik High at the 2016 fest before having BLACKPINK in 2019 and 2023 (where the girl group was a headliner), as well as their long-running boy band BIGBANG for the ultimately canceled 2020 Coachella. Music and media company 88rising has brought the likes of Jackson Wang from China in 2023 and as a surprise guest this year, Joji from Japan in 2022, and both NIKI and Rich Brian from Indonesia in 2022. Korean indie-rock acts Hyukoh, those in electronic spaces like Peggy Gou, and even Japan’s vocaloid scene via Hatsune Miku’s booking in 2020 as well as this year all brought a much-needed range of representation to the festival in the past.

But for 2024, Coachella opened its arms to a range of new and rising artists boasting a vast range of seniority, label homes and backgrounds, casting its widest net yet across Asia’s varying pop scenes — most boasting fanbases that display their fandom in fierce fervor — giving the artists a similarly large spotlight offered to pop, rock, electronic and Latin music at the influential festival.

From ATEEZ, YOASOBI, The Rose, LE SSERAFIM and ATARASHII GAKKO! all rocking their own sets to the exciting mashing of worlds and surprise guests that came together at the 88rising Futures showcase, read on for more about the artists representing this year and why Coachella 2024 clearly did their research when it came to this year’s expanded spotlight on Asian pop.

Drake Trolls Metro Boomin With Nick Cannon ‘Drumline’ Meme

Drake has long been able to leverage social media to his advantage when it comes to trolling and Metro Boomin is his latest victim.

After sniping for a headshot at Metro Boomin by name on Drizzy’s leaked “Push Ups,” he continued to troll the producer with a clip from 2002’s Drumline movie on Monday (April 15).

“Metro, shut yo ho-a– up and make some drums, n—a,” Drake raps on the diss track.

The blockbuster scene finds Nick Cannon’s character having his late-night drumline tryout attempting to convince band leaders he’s worthy of being on the P1 line without reading a note of music.

But instead of Cannon, Drake hilariously Photoshops Metro’s face on him playing the drums, which fittingly aligns with the bar Drake used to jab Metro on “Push Ups.”

In a way, the Instagram Story post signifies Drake’s first time publicly recognizing his “Push Ups” diss track. An earlier version of the scathing diss surfaced on the internet on Saturday (April 13) and DJ Akademiks premiered the CDQ version hours later.

In addition to name-dropping Metro Boomin, Drake appeared to have smoke for Kendrick Lamar, Future, The Weeknd, Rick Ross and more.

At this point, It’s unclear exactly what ignited the friction between Metro and Drake while some fans speculated on social media that their issues were over a woman.

At the top of 2023, a leaked Drake verse appeared on Metro’s Heroes & Villains track “Trance” and he explained not having the 6 God on the final version alongside Young Thug and Travis Scott.

“Really, it was a song I had did with [Travis Scott] and [Young Thug], originally for my album,” Metro recalled in an interview with Gangsta Grillz Radio. “I was in the studio with Drake one time because we were gonna do some stuff for my album. He just wanted to hear some songs from my album, and then he heard that one. He really wanted to get on it, but I was letting him know that it was really just done for real. I was just set on how it was. I was like, ‘Bro, I ain’t trying to sell you no dream. I’m locked in where it was.’ He had hit me and was just like, ‘Let me see if there’s anything you could add to it.’ He was like, ‘If you don’t like it, then whatever.’”

Months later, he appeared to voice his frustration on social media with Her Loss sweeping hip-hop award categories like Top Rap Album at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards.

“Yet Her Loss keeps winning rap album of the year over H&V,” he wrote to his IG Story. “Proof that award shows are just politics and not for me. Idc about awards honestly, the true award and REWARD is knowing that the music I spend so much time on brings joy to people’s everyday lives.” 

Drake subliminally responded on his Instagram Story while quoting Jay-Z’s “Heart of the City.” “Damn, little mans, I’m just tryna do me/ If the record’s two mil I’m just tryna move three,” he posted.

Marley Brothers Unite for 2024 North American ‘Legacy Tour’ Celebrating Dad Bob Marley’s Music & Influence

Five of late reggae icon Bob Marley‘s musical scions announced their first joint tour in nearly 20 years on Monday (April 15), an outing they’re calling The Marley Brothers: The Legacy Tour.

Teaming up for their first extended run of joint dates since 2007, brothers Ziggy, Stephen, Julian, Ky-Mani and Damian will celebrate their beloved father’s music and legacy on the outing that a release promised would feature both their individual hits and classic Bob Marley songs.

The 22-date Live Nation-promoted North American trek is slated to kick off Sept. 5 with a show at the Festival Lawn at Deer Lake Park in Vancouver, then hitting Phoenix, Dallas, Cincinnati, Toronto, Atlanta and Tampa before winding down at Miami’s FPL Solar Amphitheatre on Oct. 5.

April 20 will mark an expansion of screenings of the biopic Bob Marley: One Love, while the 40th anniversary of the “Could You Be Loved” singer’s landmark 1984 greatest-hits compilation Legend will be celebrated next month; in addition, 2025 marks what would have been Marley’s 80th birthday.

Tickets for the tour will start with pre-sales kicking off Tuesday (April 16), including a Citi presale beginning at 10 a.m. local time through Thursday (April 18) at 10 p.m. local time here. A general on-sale will kick off Friday (April 19) at 10 a.m. local time with information available here.

Katy Perry Looks Stunned as TikToker Serenades Her With ‘Prism’ Deep Cut at Coachella

Katy Perry was on both the giving and receiving ends of surprise performances at this year’s Coachella.

Shortly after the pop star made a guest appearance onstage at best friend Mia Moretti’s festival set, she was approached by TikToker Harry Daniels for an impromptu performance of a Prism deep cut — which, a stunned Perry revealed, she just so happened to write about her DJ BFF more than a decade ago.

In a clip posted Monday (April 15), Daniels approaches Perry — who wears a T-shirt with husband Orlando Bloom’s Lord of the Rings character on it — and starts belting out a few lines from her 2013 song “International Smile.” As the American Idol judge’s eyes widen in shock, she looks frantically around and shouts, “Where’s Mia?”

She then explains excitedly: “My best friend that just played Coachella, that song’s about her!”

“I got really nervous to sing for katy and i blanked,” Daniels captioned the video. “the only song i could remember was this one deep cut from 2013.”

The comedian — who’s known for singing in front of unwitting celebrities such as Billie Eilish, Ellie Goulding and, very recently, President Joe Biden — also crossed paths with Gwen Stefani, Paris Hilton, Tyga, Becky G, Reneé Rapp and Wallows’ Dylan Minnette during the first weekend of Coachella 2024, which kicked off Friday. The festival will pick up again April 19, with headliners Lana Del Rey, Tyler, the Creator and Doja Cat returning for round two.

Perry was present at day 3 of this year’s event, joining her longtime pal behind the DJ booth on the DoLab stage Sunday (April 14). At one point, she shot fake dollar bills into the crowd with a money gun while modeling a bikini tee from Moretti’s merch line.

Other surprise guests at Coachella 2024 were Kesha, who showed up during Rapp’s set, Olivia Rodrigo, who appeared during Stefani and No Doubt’s performance, and Eilish, who joined Del Rey on the main stage.

Jessica Chastain Recalls Her Beyoncé & Jay-Z Music Video Cameo: ‘I Would Always Work With The Carters’

Not many people can say they’ve won an Oscar and worked with Beyoncé — but Jessica Chastain can.

In a conversaition with Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet at the 10th Breakthrough Prize Awards on Saturday, the Eyes of Tammy Faye actress reflected on working with Queen Bey and Jay-Z back in 2017.

“I would always work with The Carters. There’s no , like, yeah of course,” she said. “That’s why the second I got the call about their music video that I did, ‘Family Feud,’ [I said] ‘This is not even a question, you don’t even need to ask this question.’”

In 2017, Chastain starred in a music video for “Family Feud” — a track from Jay-Z’s Billboard 200-topping 4:44. The visual, helmed by Oscar nominee Ava DuVernay, featured an eye-popping cast of film and television stars, including Michael B. Jordan, Rosario Dawson, Brie Larson, Thandiwe Newton, Trevante Rhodes, Omari Hardwick, Niecy Nash, Janet Mock and Mindy Kaling. The cinematic clip begins in the year 2050 with a grown-up Blue Ivy Carter leading a convention of the Founding Mothers of a fictional nation.

DuVernay won the 2018 BET Award for video director of the year for the “Family Feud” music video, and the song peaked at No. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a Grammy nomination for best rap/sung performance.

Recently, Chastain showed her love for the “II Most Wanted” singer by using the Hot 100-topping “Texas Hold ‘Em” in a video of her getting ready for an awards show. “Whenever she needs me, I’m there,” added the Oscar winner, who picked up her leading actress statuette for 2022’s The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

While fans continue to wait on the Renaissance and Cowboy Carter visuals, they can see their fellow Beyhive member Chastain in the recently released psychological thriller Mothers’ Instinct. The Benoît Delhomme-helmed flick, which co-stars Oscar winner Anne Hathaway, is a 1960s-set remake of Olivier Masset-Depasse’s 2018 French-language film same of the name. Masset-Depasse’s film is adapted from Barbra Abel’s 2012 novel.

Chastain is just one of countless celebs who have been loving Beyoncé’s dip into country. From Sarah Paulson to Olivia Rodrigo, everyone is getting their two-step on to Cowboy Carter.

Cardi B, Gunna, Davido & Sexyy Red to Headline BET Experience 2024

BET is taking over Los Angeles to open up the summer in celebration of the 2024 BET Awards. The media company revealed Monday (April 15) that Cardi B, Davido, Gunna and Sexyy Red will serve as headliners at BET Experience 2024.

Cardi and co. will invade the Crypto.com Arena in Downtown Los Angeles on June 28 to kick off the weekend of festivities. Pre-sale tickets are now available on the BET Experience website.

That isn’t the only concert going down: The famed Hollywood Bowl will also play host to Queen Latifah, The Roots, Common, Jungle Brothers and more on June 29.

For those in L.A., BET is encouraging fans to pull up to the BETX 2024 FanFest at the Los Angeles Convention Center throughout the weekend, which will host “Genius Talks, immersive workshops” and more.

All roads lead to Sunday’s (June 30) BET Awards 2024 to cap off a busy few days in the City of Angels paying homage to hip-hop’s legacy and the dignitaries of Black culture.

Veteran journalist Elliott Wilson speculated that Cardi’s return to the stage could signal the arrival of her anticipated sophomore album around the same time.

“Does this mean ⁦@iamcardib⁩ album 6/28,” he asked on X.

Earlier in April, Cardi B celebrated the sixth anniversary of her Invasion of Privacy Grammy-winning debut and teased fans about her next LP.

“6 years ago I released my first album and it broke so many records GAH LEE!!” she wrote. “6 years later I’m preparing to drop the next one this year.. it’s so different from what everyone is expecting and I’m sooo excited.”

Invasion of Privacy debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The set’s tracklist includes Hot 100 No. 1 singles “Bodak Yellow” and “I Like It.”

Cardi B set the tone for 2024 with a pair of singles last month. The first arrived on March 1 with “Like What (Freestyle)” which was followed by the Hot 100 top 10 hit “Enough (Miami).”
