Cardi B Slams Political Misogyny, Calls Kamala Harris Disrespect ‘Disgusting’

Cardi B doesn’t want any misogyny towards Kamala Harris.

The rapper took to X to share a 20-minute Spaces rant, expressing empathy that following President Joe Biden’s dropout from the presidential race, Vice President and potential Democratic nominee Kamala Harris “has 70, 80 days to change people’s perspective of her.”

She continued, “I always knew how people are when it comes to women, but the disrespect? Listen, if you don’t like her as a politician, that’s you. But if you disrespect her because she’s a woman? It’s very disgusting.”

Cardi added, “It’s crazy because four, five days ago, I was like, ‘Yo, I feel like I’m not a feminist.’ I’ve been feeling like a lot of these women are your worst enemies. The toughest critics are women. […] But then, the natural self of me is like, ‘Damn, maybe I am a feminist.’

“Men are always gonna blame your success on her p—-. People are blaming her success on her p—-. What? She f—ed Joe Biden? She f—ed the whole Democratic Party that the whole Democratic Party decided she should be Vice President? I hate that narrative because I feel like women work harder than men.”

The rapper concluded, “The way that y’all disrespect her, makes me like her.”

Since Biden’s endorsement of Harris, countless party members, public figures and voters alike provided an outpouring of support for the attorney-turned-politician’s last-minute campaign, which raised more than $50 million in fundraising less than a day after it launched. “On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country,” Harris wrote in a public response to the news. “I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination.”

Maria Becerra continues at the helm with 28 top 10s, while Tini has logged 18 career top 10s. The song joins another Emilia track in the top 10 this week, as her first team-up with Los Ángeles Azules, “Perdonarte ¿Para Qué?,” holds at No. 2 for a third week after it took over the tally for three weeks in June.

Cardi B Has Some Strong Thoughts on the New Popeyes Wing Flavor: ‘It Taste Like a Sprite Soda’

There are not many places you can order Popeyes wings at 4:30 a.m., but New York City lives up to its “city that never sleeps” nickname. After a night in the studio and looking for some fuel before hitting the gym, Cardi B ordered the new honey lemon pepper flavored wings at Popeyes and gave a brutally honest review for fans to hear on social media during the wee hours of Wednesday morning (July 24).

“Popeyes y’all really fumbled with this flavor because this flavor is not it,” she declared in a video on Instagram Stories. “This lemon pepper flavor with honey or this sweet taste on it, it’s just not good. It tastes like a f–king Sprite soda. I don’t f–king like it.

Cardi continued: “From one through 10, I’ll give it a two. I like the other one, I like the sweet heat. I was trying to be a lil’ different. I was trying to do lemon pepper, [but] I did not [think] it was gonna come with a sweet kick to it. I don’t f–king like it. It’s a dub.”

The Grammy-winning rapper shared she’d been in the studio for three straight nights and it was finally time to go home and hit the gym. However, she showed some love to NYC for having late-night food options, unlike a lot of cities across the United States.

“Which state is better than New York? Because were are literally eating Popeyes still at 4:30 in the morning,” she said. “That’s crazy. There’s no place on earth that’s serving Popeyes at 4:30 in the morning. Even though it’s a dub … Your state is not giving like New York!”

A rep for Popeyes tells Billboard that the chain welcomes all “rankings and reviews” of its wings from customers.

“If you can’t take the heat, then get out of the kitchen,” a rep for the company quips. “And we are in the kitchen. A lot. … We believe variety is the spice of life and that’s why we have six flavors for wing enthusiasts like Cardi to enjoy. We are not surprised that Cardi loved our Sweet ‘N Spicy wings flavor. Our people will be in contact with her people for a taste of all flavors for the next studio session. And while we wait on her next late-night review, we encourage guests to share their personal Wings ratings with us on social.”

It’s not the first time Cardi B has been critical of Popeyes. In June 2023, she posted a video eating chicken from the fast food chain and complained about it being too big and “the size of her face.”

“Literally, it’s the size of my face — look! It’s too big, it’s too big for me and I don’t like that,” she said at the time.

Cardi is no stranger to reviewing her meals, and she teamed up with famed food critic Keith Lee in March to give their opinion on a burger joint in Los Angeles.

The rapper is continuing to grind in the studio after she promised that her long-awaited sophomore album would indeed be arriving later this year.

“I wanna say this to Bardi gang or anybody who’s just a fan of my music or even my craziness… I have my good days and my bad days but you know what, whether it’s good or bad I couldn’t be happier with the obvious anticipation for my album. Sometimes I get a little aggressive because yall know I don’t like to be told what to do but I promise you it’s coming THIS YEAR,” she confirmed on X July 18. “Thank you for the love and anticipation and always holding me down. I love yall.”

Taylor Swift Gushes About Rainy Eras Tour Show in Hamburg: ‘Loved Those Crowds’

With her Hamburg fans, Taylor Swift would dance in a storm in her best dress, fearless. Following two nights at Volksparkstadion — one of which was complete with sheets of rain — the 34-year-old pop star is thanking her German crowds for showing up and showing out this week.

Sharing a carousel of dynamic photos from the concerts on Instagram Thursday (July 25), Swift gushed, “Hamburg!! I loved those crowds so so so much.”

“AND we got a rain show night one, unlocking Fuzzy Hair Me for the evening ?,” she continued, referencing the way her hair forms tight curls when faced with humidity. “Been having a blast watching these new Eras crowd traditions unfold all throughout Europe… You guys are seriously so creative. See you ? Munich!”

Following her tenure in Hamburg July 23-24, the “Anti-Hero” singer will next set up shop in Munich for two back-to-back shows starting Saturday (July 27). She has less than a month left on the European leg of her global Eras trek, after which she’ll return to North America in October for one last victory lap through the U.S. and Canada.

At Volksparkstadion, Swift continued her tradition of singing two surprise song mashups during each nightly acoustic set, this time performing combinations of “Teardrops on My Guitar” with “The Last Time” and “We Were Happy” with “Happiness” on the first night, followed by “The Last Great American Dynasty” with “Run” and “Nothing New” with “Dear Reader” on the second.

In the crowd on Night 1 was Flavor Flav, aka “King Swiftie,” whom Swift gave a shout-out from the stage just before closing out the show. The Public Enemy rapper posted a clip of the moment on X, as well as a video of a sweet gift one person in attendance gave him.

After the show, he tweeted, “Shout out back to @taylorswift13 @taylornation13 and her team and family for having me,!!! ??????”

Cymande Helped Pave the Way for Hip-Hop, Disco and House in the ’70s – And Is Now Enjoying a Resurgence

Many people who know Cymande, the genre-bending British band from the early ’70s, have their own Cymande origin story. For the director Tim MacKenzie-Smith, “it was a mixtape that was passed to me at college, and it had no tracklist. It had 90 minutes of brilliant old American funk on it. Rare groove stuff, soul.”

MacKenzie-Smith recognized most of the songs – but not all of them. As a Shazam-less college student in the mid-’90s, he spent the next several years wondering who, exactly, had recorded two tracks that he “absolutely adored.” Eventually, a record-collecting friend threw on Cymande in MacKenzie-Smith’s presence and the director had an epiphany: “Oh my god, that’s those tunes that I’ve been loving for the last five years!”

“Why does no one know about this music?” MacKenzie-Smith remembers asking himself. “That started me off on a journey of discovery that carried on for many years, shouting from the rooftops, telling people all about them.”

Trending on Billboard

Now, MacKenzie-Smith has moved from the proverbial rooftops to the silver screen. After premiering at South By Southwest in 2023 and hitting theaters in the British Isles earlier this year, his documentary, Getting It Back: The Story of Cymande, is opening in the U.S. on July 26. With the help of a diverse roster of talking heads – from the producer Mark Ronson (Amy Winehouse) to the members of psych-funk trio Khruangbin to De La Soul’s DJ Maseo and Prince Paul – the film tells the story of an innovative funk band ahead of its time, derailed initially by an unreceptive music industry but ultimately embraced by the founders of hip-hop, house and disco music and the generations since.

In the early ’70s, several young men in London’s Afro-Caribbean diaspora community, including bassist Steve Scipio and guitarist Patrick Patterson, formed Cymande. The band drew on its varied influences – not just the sounds of their Caribbean countries of origin, but the contemporary R&B of Otis Redding and Solomon Burke and the forward-thinking jazz of Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck – to create music that, while inviting, defied easy categorization. That proved an obstacle as Cymande tried to grow its profile.

“The industry at the time tended to pigeonhole black musicians in the U.K.,” Scipio, 74, tells Billboard from his Anguilla home over Zoom, recalling the straightforward “reggae stuff” that labels often requested when Cymande was shopping its demos. “We deliberately made a choice not to go down that route.”

Scipio and Patterson, also 74 and chiming in on the Zoom from London, argue that the British music business treated Black and white musicians differently when it came to creativity. “Young white musicians at the time who were experimenting with all kinds of different things, [the British music business] was accommodating for them,” Scipio explains. “As Black musicians, we were never given that kind of opportunity.”

Cymande eventually landed a deal with Janus Records, and released an album a year from 1972 to 1974. They even earned fans stateside opening for legends including Al Green, Jerry Butler, Patti LaBelle and Ramsey Lewis. But stymied by the industry in the U.K., the band took a break – Scipio and Patterson are adamant today that Cymande never broke up – that ended up lasting 40 years.

However, while Cymande was sidelined, its music took on a life of its own. As Getting It Back recounts, when DJ Jazzy Jay and other early hip-hop artists in The Bronx began experimenting with using double turntable setups and duplicate copies of records to mix and extend tracks, “Bra,” a standout from Cymande’s self-titled debut, was one of the most common songs they threw on the decks. By the ’80s, legends like The Sugarhill Gang and Gang Starr were sampling “Bra.” With its infectious, easily isolated groove, the song also percolated to disco clubs and became a frequent pick for DJs at the dawn of house music. (Paradise Garage visionary Larry Levan was a fan.) Filmmaker Spike Lee also championed the band, using “Bra” in 1994’s Crooklyn and 2002’s 25th Hour.

“The sampling of Cymande’s material started quite early,” says Patterson, though he explains that, “in the early days of sampling, it was difficult to know who was doing what because it was a hidden culture.”

But after De La Soul released its seminal 1989 album 3 Feet High and Rising, which includes the “Bra”-sampling “Change In Speak,” Scipio’s kids turned him onto it – and by extension, the fact that Cymande’s music had become a touchstone for the artists who followed them. “Something was going on with our music because they were hearing snippets of it in the music that they were listening to,” he says.

Cymande’s publisher, Sony Music Publishing, has helped the band to identify usages of its music and “to ensure that we are properly recompensed,” Patterson says, with Scipio adding that all sampling matters have been resolved amicably. The sampling was a financial boon (like many Cymande songs, Patterson and Scipio are the two credited writers for “Bra”). And both heartily endorse sampling generally: “I’ve always supported it,” Patterson says. “Steve and I regularly say it’s a good thing, using creativity to make new things.”

In 2014, motivated in part by the decades-long groundswell of support for their music, Cymande returned to the stage in London. MacKenzie-Smith and eventual Getting It Back producer/editor Matt Wyllie were at the gig as the fans. Then, MacKenzine-Smith, who prior to Getting It Back had primarily made sports films, used Cymande’s song “Dove” to open his 2017 documentary about the British boxer Anthony Joshua – and a representative for the band got in touch to let him know they’d heard the synch. “We’d always said, ‘Man, whatever happened to Cymande?’” the director says of his conversations over the years with Wyllie. With contact established with Cymande’s camp, he shot his shot and inquired about doing a documentary about the band: “The only way we were going to find out was to go and make a film about them.”

The film became a labor of love for MacKenzie-Smith, and he embraced “a process of ridiculous research and just obsession, really” as he began searching for musicians who Cymande had influenced. And when the pandemic hit during production, the project’s logistics became even more daunting. “We always had in mind the story of the band itself,” MacKenzie-Smith said. “When there were those days where you thought, ‘We’re never gonna get this finished. Is this [film] ever going to see the light of day?’, then we always remembered that, ‘Hold on a minute – this is a band that took 40 years off and came back and found themselves to have a brand new audience of kids who found them on YouTube. It might take a while, but you get there in the end.’”

MacKenzie-Smith expects Cymande’s story of resiliency to resonate similarly with modern audiences. And he also thinks it encapsulates a fascinating aspect of consumption in the digital age.

“Everything’s a double-edged sword, because for artists to make real money from their art is so difficult these days – they get such small amounts of money from streaming, and everything’s available for free on YouTube,” he says. “But, ultimately, with this particular story, it’s actually showing the good in all that. Everyone will quite rightly discuss the bad and what needs to change. But the good in all of that is that a band who thought their time was done have found out that it’s not. And kids who are in their teens or their early twenties, who might be fans of Khruangbin or whoever, are finding this band.”

For their part, Patterson and Scipio still marvel at the continued influence of Cymande’s music. “We are really appreciative of their love for the music,” Patterson says of the musicians who appear in the film, and Scipio calls the process “enlightening … I wasn’t aware the extent to which the music was appreciated out there.”

Since reuniting a decade ago, Cymande has released an album (2015’s A Simple Act of Faith) and has toured periodically. And with Getting It Back propelling them – plus new music in the works and touring on tap for 2025 – Patterson and Scipio envision a new, fruitful era for Cymande.

“Our target now is to make sure that everything is rolling to break out in 2025,” says Patterson. With a laugh, he adds, “We hope to satisfy our fans and the listening audiences that we haven’t been wasting our time.”

The expanded version includes seven new songs and will be released Aug. 2. Musgraves is previewing the expanded version with the release of “Irish Goodbye” on Friday (July 26). The song, which Musgraves has previously performed in concert, centers on someone struggling to forgive an ex lover who left without properly ending the relationship.

Billy Ray Cyrus Says He Was At ‘Wit’s End’ In Response to Leaked Audio of Argument With Ex Firerose: ‘See You in Court’

Billy Ray Cyrus lashed out at his estranged wife singer Firerose in an Instagram Story on Wednesday (July 24) after the leak of a tape in which it appeared that the 62-year-old “Achy Breaky Heart” star was lambasting Firerose (born Johanna Hodges), 37, during a heated argument in which he blamed the Australian vocalist for making him late to a show.

“Hell yeah, I was at my wit’s end,” Cyrus wrote in the Story. “As every day went by, I started realizing something was wrong. And that’s before I knew she was a fraud. I just knew something wasn’t right. That was before I knew she was David Hodges ex-wife. That’s before I knew her parents last name.”

The post continued, “I had no idea she was arrested for felony residential burglary. I saw before my very own eyes, everything I thought I knew about her, was a lie. She was trying to take over my career, my life and usurp the Cyrus name for her own gain. See you in court.”

It’s unclear who leaked the undated audio of the argument to Britain’s Daily Mail, but Cyrus’ divorce lawyers told ET that it was Firerose; at press time, a spokesperson for Firerose had no comment when asked by Billboard to respond to that claim.

In the 90-second recording — which Billboard has obtained — a hoarse-sounding man identified as Cyrus can be heard berating Firerose over his claims she made him late for an appearance. “It’s 9:15 you idiot,” he says. “I needed to leave two hours ago,” as the person identified as Firerose calmly responds, “No you didn’t, you can still leave.”

“Get the f–k out of here. I had to go when I was ready to go,” the man identified as Cyrus continues. “If you had just shut the f–k up. I’m not in no place to do a show. I had to go when I was ready to go! [sound of hands clapping together]. If you had just shut the f–k up!” Firerose asks Cyrus to “stop screaming” at her as the singer continues to blame his ex for making him late.

“If you would’ve left it alone when I told you, it’s done. Now I’m really f–king pissed. You once again showed me you will not listen. I don’t know who the f–k you think you are, but you will not f–king listen.” Cyrus then tells Firerose that their argument is about her being a “selfish b–ch,” telling her “I don’t think you’re real smart. I changed my damn mind on that s–t.” He then repeatedly called her a “b–tch” and a “dumb ass” and says, “you cannot continue to walk all over me and think that I’m gonna go out in public with your dumb ass and f–king have have you do s–t anywhere you want in front of whoever… you just f–ked up.”

Cyrus filed for divorce on May 22 citing “irreconcilable differences” and “inappropriate marital conduct” seven months after the couple married; they began dating in 2022 after years of friendship. In a follow-up filing on June 13 filing, Cyrus requested an emergency motion accusing Firerose of making nearly $100,000 in unauthorized “fraudulent” credit card charges while seeking a temporary restraining order to stop her, accusations her attorneys labeled “untrue.”

In a statement shared with Billboard, Cyrus’ divorce attorneys, Rose Palermo and Jason Talley of the firm Cheatham Palermo and Garrett said, “On behalf of our client, Billy Ray Cyrus, we wish to respond to Ms. Hodges recent release to the press in an apparent last-ditch effort to squeeze money out of Mr. Cyrus ahead of our court ordered mediation scheduled for next week.”

They added, “As we previously stated and released back in June, we regret that Ms. Hodges has chosen to litigate this 7-month marriage in the press and has left Mr. Cyrus with no recourse but to set the record straight, once again. Mr. Cyrus previously admitted in a court filing that he had been very vocally frustrated and angry with Ms. Hodges during their 7-month marriage as he began to uncover more and more of Ms. Hodges true motives for marrying him.”

In reference to the leaked audio, the attorneys said that Firerose — who has legally changed her name to Firerose — allegedly made the recording without telling Cyrus that he was being taped. “Of course, she was intentionally on her best behavior since she knew the recording was being made,” they wrote. “If Mr. Cyrus was truly the person that Ms. Hodges desires the court of public opinion to believe with the release of her one-sided recording, then it is mindboggling to try and explain why Ms. Hodges begged to return to live with him and for Mr. Cyrus to give her a chance to ‘explain everything’ after he filed to annul or dissolve their marriage.”

The attorneys concluded, “Unfortunately, Ms. Hodges is attempting to litigate her case in the press for her own personal gain and in an attempt to harm our client’s longstanding career, as she promised she would do if he tried to divorce her, which Mr. Cyrus alleged in a previous court filing. At this point Ms. Hodges has played her last card, while Mr. Cyrus, on the other hand, has much more material to present to the Court to demonstrate the lies that she made public throughout these proceedings.”

After Cyrus’ divorce filing, Firerose accused him of domestic abuse, saying he was psychologically abusive during their marriage, calling the country singer “unpredictable and volatile” due to alleged substance abuse, adding the claim that he filed for divorce one day before she was scheduled to have a preventative double mastectomy. Cyrus’ lawyers “vehemently” denied the allegations, saying that while he was “certainly vocal, frustrated and angry with the defendant in May 2024, it is the plaintiff who, in fact, has been abused. Not only verbally and emotionally by the defendant, but PHYSICALLY.”

The TikTok Billboard Top 50 is a weekly ranking of the most popular songs on TikTok in the United States based on creations, video views and user engagement. The latest chart reflects activity July 15-21. Activity on TikTok is not included in Billboard charts except for the TikTok Billboard Top 50.

“Champagne Coast,” originally released in 2011 as part of Blood Orange’s (real name Dev Hynes) album of the same year, Coastal Grooves, started at No. 46 on the TikTok Billboard Top 50 dated July 6 and has experienced a meteoric rise since, vaulting to No. 21 and then to No. 5 prior to its coronation.

Trending on Billboard

Multiple trends have highlighted the upsurge of “Champagne Coast.” One features creators uploading videos to the prompt “did we get rich?” or “did we hit the lottery?” in response to their younger self, and another argues that the uploader will stay single until the sound when they look into a prospective lover’s eyes sounds like “Champagne Coast.”

Concurrent with its TikTok Billboard Top 50 rule, “Champagne Coast” makes its first non-TikTok-based Billboard charts, paced by its No. 15 debut on the Hot Alternative Songs survey. In the week ending July 18, the tune earned 3.6 million official U.S. streams, up 17%, according to Luminate.

“Million Dollar Baby” falls to No. 2 on the TikTok Billboard Top 50, ensuring that its now-12-week history on the chart has found it go no lower than the top two, while LeoStayTrill and Mr Reload It’s “Pink Lemonade (Str8 Reload)” lifts 4-3, a new peak.

“Pink Lemonade” is mostly driven by lip-synch videos to the song, which was released in May. It boasts 1.5 million streams in the week ending July 18, up 4%.

BlackMayo’s “Jus’ Know” and Ian’s “Magic Johnson” round out the top five, followed by the week’s top debut in 2KE and 808iuli’s “X-Slide,” which bows at No. 6.

“X-Slide,” the uploads of which on TikTok are led by its ultra-slowed version (though its standard version has gotten significant play as well), is highlighted on TikTok by workout and fitness videos, as well as clips from video games and anime.

Three other songs hit the chart’s top 10 for the first time: Sevdaliza, Pabllo Vittar and Yseult’s “Alibi,” Clairo’s “Juna” and Charli XCX’s “Apple” round out the top 10 at Nos. 8-10, respectively.

“Alibi” has been paced by a dance trend on TikTok, one that began in the spring but has taken off in recent weeks. “Juna,” meanwhile, bows at No. 9 not long after the song’s July 12 premiere as part of Clairo’s new album, Charm; along with lip-synch clips and other general content, an underlying trend featuring the tune plays off its “you know me” verse with a photo explaining all of the user’s favorites and interests.

As for “Apple,” the song from Charli XCX’s much-talked-about 2024 album Brat has also benefited from a dance trend. It’s risen each week on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart since its debut on June 22 at No. 25, hitting a new peak of No. 7 on the latest tally thanks to 4.2 million streams in the week ending July 18, a boost of 55%.

Ice Spice Reveals Taylor Swift Is Her ‘Closest Celebrity Friend’: ‘Our Personalities Mesh’

Karma takes all of Taylor Swift‘s friends to the summit — and one of the closest among them is Ice Spice, the rapper revealed.

In a new Rolling Stone cover story published Thursday (July 25), the 24-year-old hip-hop star gushed that the singer remains her “closest celebrity friend,” more than a year after their collaboration on “Karma” reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Taylor f–ks with me,” Ice told the publication. “She’s so funny. I think our personalities mesh really well.”

The “Munch” musician — whose debut album Y2K! arrives Friday (July 26) — also dismissed speculation that Swift was simply looking for clout when she tapped her for the “Karma” remix. “[It’s] so rude to me, [because] why would she not want to be my friend?” she said.

To Ice’s point, Swift raved about her pal in a comment to the publication, saying she loves how her past duet partner takes “a keen interest in not just the music, but the music industry and how it works.”

Trending on Billboard

“Seeing Ice lean into the strategic, financial and business aspects of her career is really exciting for me,” the 14-time Grammy winner continued. “The more artists learn about the inner workings of the music industry, the more power they can have in their creative world. I knew based on the questions she asked and the observations she made that she didn’t just want to be a passenger in her own career. She wanted to be the driver of it.”

Swift has long been one of Ice’s most vocal supporters, with the “Anti-Hero” singer asserting on more than one occasion that the rapper is the “one to watch.” Ice has proven that she’s a fierce defender of the pop star as well, sassily blowing kisses to a group of male fans who started booing when the rapper performed “Karma” at Rolling Loud earlier this month.

The Bronx native has also said that Swift often acts as a guiding light for her when it comes to her career, telling Billboard in the March 2024 issue, “When I was in the studio with Taylor, like, I’ll never forget that.”

Ice added, “She told me, ‘No matter what, just keep making music and everything’s going to be fine.’”
