Ahmad Jamal, Influential Jazz Pianist Dies at 92

Influential jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal has died at age 92. The New York Times reported that Jamal died at his home in Ashley Falls, MA on Sunday April 16) due to prostate cancer.

A beloved piano player and composer, Jamal’s unique sound influenced fellow jazz greats Miles Davis and McCoy Tyner, as well as a generation of crate-digging hip-hop lyricists and producers who sampled his music, including J Dilla (who snagged Jamal’s 1974 tune “Swahililand” for De La Soul’s “Stakes Is High”), Nas (“The World is Yours”) and DJ Premiere (for Gang Starr’s “Soliloquy of Chaos”) among many others.

Renowned for a light touch that favored lyricism over a barrage of notes — in contrast to the heady, sometimes hectic sound of bebop that ruled when he began playing as a teen in the 1940s — Jamal sought to create more space with a style that has been credited as one of the most admired in the genre’s history.

After getting his start performing as Fritz Jones in the late 1940s, Jamal began to develop what the Times described as a “laid-back, accessible style, with its dense chords, its wide dynamic range and above all its judicious use of silence,” which led to some dismissive, negative reviews from the jazz press early on, including writer Martin Williams describing his sound as “chic and shallow.”

That criticism would not stick, however, as more and more jazz greats began to cite Jamal as an inspiration, including Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett. Legendary trumpeter Davis — who became a friend and who later recorded Jamal’s songs — once said “all my inspiration comes from Ahmad Jamal,” the paper noted.

Jamal was born Frederick Russell Jones in Pittsburgh, PA on July 2, 1930 and began playing piano at an early age, going pro at 14 and hitting on the road in 1948 with George Hudson’s Orchestra after graduating from high school. A move to Chicago in 1950 brought more work, as well as a conversion to Islam that birthed Jones’ new stage name. His piano-guitar-bass trio, the Three Strings, caught the ear of legendary producer/talent scout John Hammond, who signed them to Okeh record label, which launched a long and fruitful recording career for more than a dozen labels.

Jamal first full-length album, Ahmad Jamal Plays, was released on the Parrot label in 1955 — and later rereleased on Chess Records under a different name — and featured the original track “New Rhumba” and covers of such jazz standards as George and Ira Gershwin’s “A Foggy Day” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So” and Cole Porter’s “All of You.”

It was 1958’s live album, At the Pershing: But Not for Me, which was recorded at the famed Chicago nightclub, however, that introduced the world to Jamal’s sound. The record spent more than two years on the Billboard 200 album chart, a rare feat for a jazz album. The album collection featured the pianist’s best-known track, his energetic take on the standard “Poinciana.”

Over the course of his career Jamal would release more than 60 albums and earn a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master award, as well as lifetime achievement honor from the Grammy Awards and a Living Jazz Legend designation from the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts.

Jamal continued to perform and record well into his 80s, releasing his final album, the mostly solo piano collection Ballades, in 2019, which included a solo version of “Poinciana” that served as a poignant bookend to a prodigious, acclaimed career that also included the founding of several record labels and the short-lived Alhambra jazz club in Chicago. Two double-disc compilations of previously unreleased live recordings in Seattle, Emerald City Nights: Live at the Penthouse (1963-1964) and the sequel, (1965-66), were released last year.

Aespa Unveils Third Mini Album Title & Release Date: Here’s When It Arrives

Get ready, MYs! aespa is gearing up to release its third mini album, and it’s arriving much sooner than you think. On Monday (April 17), the K-pop group — which consists of members Giselle, Karina, NingNing and Winter — announced the title of the forthcoming project and dates pertaining to its release.

“aespa to release 3rd mini album ‘MY WORLD’ on May 8th and warm up for the comeback with the pre-released single ‘Welcome To MY World’ on May 2nd! Pre-orders start today!” the quartet’s official Twitter account revealed, alongside a series of teaser images of the album title, MY WORLD, in balloon lettering.

The album announcement was released alongside the project’s introductory teaser, which featured Giselle, Karina, NingNing and Winter in white outfits surrounded by a rocky landscape and other arid locations. Guitar-based instrumentals fade in toward the end of the brief trailer, as NingNing delicately sings the title of the pre-release single, “Welcome To MY World.”

MY WORLD will mark aespa’s second album following the release of Girls in 2022. The set ranked at No. 3 on the all-genre Billboard 200, and spent a total of three weeks on the chart. The K-pop stars most recently released single “Hold On Tight,” which appeared on the Tetris original film soundtrack.

The album news is likely a sigh of relief for MYs, as asepa debuted several new and unreleased tracks during its SYNK: HYPER LINE concert back in February.

Bad Bunny Spotted Getting Cozy With Kendall Jenner at Coachella

Romance rumors about Bad Bunny and Kendall Jenner definitely won’t be dying down any time soon. As the 29-year-old Latin music megastar took over Coachella this weekend as one of the festival’s headliners, the 27-year-old Kardashians reality star was spotted at his side numerous times.

The pair were captured at several different moments throughout the weekend by onlooking fans. At one point, Benito — his mouth concealed by a checkered bandana — whispered something in Jenner’s ear. In a video taken after sunset, the “Me Porto Bonito” musician was filmed holding Jenner from behind as the couple swayed along to Frank Ocean’s Sunday night (April 16) set.

Two nights prior to that, Bad Bunny became Coachella’s first ever solo Latino musician to serve as a headliner, performing on the main stage Friday (April 14). Supporting him from the crowd during his history-making set was Jenner, filmed by fans dancing along to his biggest tracks.

Bad Bunny and the 818 Tequila founder have been stoking romance rumors since February, when they were seen at a restaurant with Justin and Hailey Bieber. Since then, they’ve been spotted spending time together, most recently trying out horseback riding during an outing in Hidden Hills, Calif.

It’s worth noting, though, that during his Weekend 1 performance, the Puerto Rican star took a moment to remind fans that what they see about his life on social media is only a fraction of the true story. “Humbly speaking, people think they know the lives of famous people, but they don’t,” he told his crowd.

“They don’t know what we feel, what we live through,” he continued. “They will never know what a heart can feel. Don’t believe everything you hear. You won’t get to know the real me through a video on Instagram, an interview or a TikTok.”

Doja Cat Laughs Off ‘Demonic’ Accusations After Sharing Monstrous New Tattoo

Doja Cat is above the demonic discourse — if anything, it amuses her. The “Need to Know” rapper inadvertently reignited satanic panic on Sunday (April 16) after revealing her new tattoo of a scaled, animal figure crossbred with female attributes, and she had some choice words for those claiming she is engaging in unholy behavior.

In response to a tweet regarding her forthcoming album, one Twitter user enquired, “What’s the point of writing your music and creating something if it isn’t considered timeless?! I HOPE THAT THIS ALBUM has no demonic influence. If it does, not worth listening to. I said what I said. If you don’t like it, take your grievances to @god and @jesus.” Doja’s response? “Slay girl yas.”

A separate user also questioned the 27-year-old rapper’s recent postings, writing, “I show up when it’s time for their soul to GO TO HELL. Now play on that @dojacat, the only person in a ritual putting demonic s–t on my page,” to which Doja replied, “Honestly werk.” The rapper later made a follow-up to both tweets, asserting that she loves when people accuse of her of being satanic. “If ur calling me demonic honestly werk cuz like i love that u ate fr,” she wrote.

After showing off her tattoo on Instagram, Doja made a follow-up post that contained an explanation regarding her ink’s origins, captioning the photos, “your fear is not my problem.” A slide in the carousel explained that the semi-animal creature that now lives on her forearm is inspired by Fortunio Liceti’s 1655 Monsters series, where he made illustrations inspired by deformities in nature.

Some fans on Instagram supported the rapper’s tattoo — and open mindset — in the comments section. “People want to scream the words demonic or illuminate [sic] at the sight of anything they’re unfamiliar with,” one user wrote. Another fan added, “Quite a wholesome and profound inspiration to draw from. Finding beauty in our imperfections. Makes me even more excited for this album.”

The Weeknd Seduces Ultimate ‘Nasty Bad Pop Girl’ Lily-Rose Depp in Trailer For HBO’s ‘The Idol’

The new trailer for HBO’s long-awaited music drama series The Idol promises to dive into the muck of the music industry, and judging from the two-minute sneak peek that dropped on Monday morning (April 17), nobody emerges clean.

The series slated to debut on June 4 on HBO (and later stream on Max), was co-created by co-star The Weeknd (born Abel Tesfaye) along with Euphoria mastermind Sam Levinson — and Reza Fahim — and it takes little time establishing the gritty, sex and excess vibe.

“When was the last truly f–king nasty, nasty bad-pop was one of the show’s stars asks over footage of Depp’s Jocelyn posing for photos while smoking a cigarette in a daringly plunging red gown. It quickly introduces nightclub owner Tedros (Tesfaye), whose dark past seems like a bonus for the pop star whose career was derailed by a mental health crisis on her previous tour.

“You’ve got the best job in the world. You should be having way more fun,” Tedros whispers as he seduces the singer on the dancefloor. “I like you,” she responds while a pounding remix of Britney Spears’ “Gimme More” amps up the tension. The teaser then switches to showing cult leader Tedros as a svengali-like figure who unlocks something in Jocelyn by seemingly leaning all-in on her sex appeal.

“I want to be the biggest touring act ever,” she says as those around Jocelyn fear that Tedros is brainwashing his charge while things appear to be spiraling out of control. The filming of the series that was originally ordered by HBO in Nov. 2021 — which also co-stars Troye Sivan, Dan Levy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Eli Roth, Hari Nef, Moses Sumney, Hank Azaria and more — was reportedly plagued by delays, reshoots and rewrites on a production Rolling Stone claimed was described by a source as a “s–tshow.”

Last week, The Weeknd posed a 17-second preview of a song he’s been working on for with producer Mike Dean the show that he captioned “THE IDOL VOL. 1.” The Idol will air on HBO on Sunday nights at 9:30 p.m. beginning June 4 and will screen out of competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

“I’m a huge fan of your TikTok,” Perry was captured telling North in videos posted afterward to Instagram Stories by Kardashian, who was photographed filming the moment proudly from the audience. “I’ve seen a couple of them that you’ve made. You’re a really good dancer, and I thought what better way to be a great dancer [than] to show the world your awesome dance moves?”

North agreed, but on one condition: “Can my friends come out with me?” she asked the “Firework” singer, who deliberated for a moment before giving the OK.

Three more little girls then ran onstage, including Gracie Teefey — North’s pal and frequent TikTok collaborator, and Selena Gomez’s nine-year-old little sister. The besties then joined Perry in getting down to an instrumental of the singer’s 2017 single “Swish Swish,” taking turns doing their best cartwheels.

After the show, Perry met up with the Skims founder backstage and the two posed for pictures with fellow guests of the night, Sia and Paris Hilton. “Honestly, I’m the biggest Katy Perry fan,” Kardashian told the musician in a clip Perry posted to Instagram. “I’m not just saying that ’cause you’re here.”

“If you’re a big fan, can I finally be a sister?” the American Idol judge asked Kardashian, who immediately accepted her into the family empire: “Katy! We don’t even have to change the initial!”

Metallica Will Release American Sign Language Videos For Every ’72 Seasons’ Song

Metallica celebrated National American Sign Language Day on Saturday (April 15) by announcing that they will become the first-ever major rock band to release American Sign Language (ASL) videos for every song from their new album. The roll-out began with the official ASL visual for the 72 Seasons title track, which features ASL interpretation from flame-haired Amber Galloway, a fan favorite festival sign language interpreter.

The clip features Galloway taking up one-third of the screen and signing the song’s two-minute guitar intro and galloping drums before tackling singer James Hetfield’s urgent vocals. The project is a collaboration between Metallica and the nonprofit Deaf Professional Arts Network (DPAN) and Galloway’s Amber G Productions.

In a video announcement, self-described hardcore deaf Metallica fan Tom Osbourne explained the project, signing, “It is my honor to announce that on April 25th Metallica will release ALL music videos from 72 Seasons in ASL. Metallica is the first major rock band to do this!”

In a band statement about the title track ASL video — and the upcoming 11 other 72 Seasons ASL clips — the group praised Galloway, who has gone viral several times for her high-energy signing at festivals including Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza. “It’s been an honor to work with Amber and DPAN teams, and we hope that our fans in the deaf and hard of hearing community enjoy experiencing the album through these videos!” the band wrote.

In addition to their ASL video initiative, Metallica released three other videos over the weekend from the album that dropped on Friday. The animated Tristan Zammit-directed clip for “Shadows Fall” has heroic, anime-style versions of the quartet rocking out on a galactic sundial. Another Zammit-helmed animated clip for “Room of Mirrors” takes place in a haunted house filled with toothy flying eyeball monsters. A Tim Saccenti-directed live action performance clip for “Sleepwalk My Life Away” drops the Bay Area RRHOF members in a murky mountain landscape for a moodily lit performance under ominously swirling clouds.

In addition to 8 lyric videos, Metallica was slated to drop a new visual for “TooFar Gone?” at 10 a.m. ET on Monday (April 17).

Sacramento Kings Probe ‘Racial Bias’ Claims After E-40 Ejected From Game

The Sacramento Kings are investigating allegations from a Bay Area hip-hop star that “racial bias” led to him being kicked out of his seat during a playoff game against the Golden State Warriors.

The rapper E-40 said in a statement that he was heckled throughout the game Saturday night and addressed one heckler “in an assertive but polite manner” before security guards came and ordered him to leave the arena.

“Unfortunately, it was yet another reminder that — despite my success and accolades as a musician and entrepreneur — racial bias remains prevalent,” he said in a statement. “Security saw a disagreement between a Black man and a white woman and immediately assumed that I was at fault.”

The Kings said they are investigating the circumstances behind the ejection.

“The Sacramento Kings take these claims seriously and are investigating the facts and circumstances regarding the situation, as we do anytime an accusation like this is made,” the team said in a statement.

A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that E-40, whose real name is Earl Stevens, was standing and blocking the view of fans behind him and was given a warning after several complaints. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because details of the situation weren’t released publicly.

The person said E-40 refused to comply and that security officials for the Warriors and Kings escorted him from his seat.

A second person familiar situation, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said E-40 was never given a warning by security about “excessive standing.” E-40 is a prominent Warriors fan and was even part of the delegation that visited the White House earlier this season.

“It’s unfortunate,” Warriors guard Klay Thompson said. “I love 40. He’s been our biggest supporter for years. I hope they right that ship because he deserves to be there by our bench. In my time knowing him, he’s always been respectful. He’s always been considerate of those around him. Very weird to see, and I hope it’s resolved.”

E-40 is known for his collaborations with other artists, including on songs such as “I Don’t (Expletive) With You” with Big Sean, “Snap Yo Fingers” with Lil Jon and Sean Paul of YoungBloodZ, and “U And Dat” with T-Pain and Kandi Girl.

Frank Ocean Finally Headlined Coachella 2023 and There’s A Lot To Unpack

It’s been seven years since the ever-elusive Frank Ocean stepped onto a stage. But despite his booking as the third and final headliner for Coachella 2023, fans still felt unsure if he would actually show. Signs that read “NO FRANK OCEAN MERCHANDISE” were plastered across the merch tent, and the official Coachella livestream on YouTube excluded his performance. And yet, at 10:55 p.m., almost an hour after he was scheduled to perform, the main stage lights finally dimmed and the show no one expected officially began.

The fact that it happened wasn’t the only surprise, though, as Frank had the stage transformed into one giant screen. As a result, only a small square of space was hardly visible, but that’s where all of the action took place for the following hour and a half — until Frank abruptly announced from backstage, “Guys, I’m being told it’s curfew, so that’s the end of the show.”

The highly anticipated show came three years after Frank, Travis Scott and Rage Against the Machine were slated to take over the 2020 edition of the festival, which was postponed due to COVID. As the only performer who remained at the top of the bill since (as promised by Goldenvoice CEO and Coachella’s co-founder Paul Tollet in a 2021 interview) Frank delivered an unbelievable (for more reasons than one) if not unorthodox set, that had fans grasping on to every moment. Because after Sunday night, who knew when we might see him again.

The “Met her at Coachella” line from set opener “Novacane” hit different in the desert, which served as Frank’s backdrop whenever the camera showed his POV from the center of it all — until he chose not to be.

Check out the five major takeaways from Frank Ocean’s Coachella 2023 headlining set below.

The Set-Up Was Deceptively Intimate

Despite performing in front of tens of thousands of people, Frank and his team meticulously designed his headlining stage to resemble a recording studio, with Frank hunched around a mic in the center while a live band tinkered around behind him and studio hands respected his every request. Yet despite the intimate setup, he would still occasionally pull up the hood of his blue puffer coat and cover his black durag and the majority of his face, his full beard solely poking out. The reclusive star was giving an incredibly rare glimpse into his creative process, even giving fans a taste of new music. And while fans couldn’t really see what was happening or where Frank even was, the high-definition video feed helped to fill in some gaps, supplemented with gritty and at times incredibly shaky footage that played out like a one-night-only, live documentary that could only be consumed in the moment.

He Reimagined His Most-Beloved Songs

Between Frank’s 2011 debut mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra and his 2016 magnum opus Blonde, the artist faced every performer’s two-fold issue: 1) What songs should I play? and 2) How do I make them special for this audience? He solved the dilemma by performing his classic hits in ways fans had never heard them before, including a stripped-down, acoustic version of “Pink + White,” a turnt up remix of “Solo,” a drill edit of “Chanel,” a punk rock remix of “Wiseman” and many more. Yet none of those favorites closed out the set; instead, Frank dug deep into his discography to pull out his cover of Aaliyah‘s 1994 track “At Your Best (You Are Love)” that was featured on his 2016 visual album Endless.

There Was a Rave Intermission… And It Worked

Toward the end of his set, Frank shined his spotlight on DJ Crystalmess. “You can’t even see Frank Ocean but you get a little rave mix in the middle of the show,” Frank said, describing her set within a set. She strung together her own reimagining of Frank’s songs, like a Jersey Club remix of “Slide,” which Calvin Harris performed the night before on the same stage, as well as a bounce edit of “Pyramids” that left one scene-stealing security guard twerking like there’s no tomorrow — all of which was captured and shown as part of Frank’s live feed. The rave also brought out the only guest of the night: The lime green robotic baby doll Frank brought as his little date to the 2021 Met Gala.

“Back in 2020, I was just starting to throw parties in little clubs in New York that were just getting started before sh– started shutting down,” Frank recalled. “And I was having such a good time playlisting music and listening to so much new music and encountering DJs who were up and coming and who were really on their sh–. It’s become such a part of my practice now with my new weekly thing, with [Apple Music 1’s] Homer Radio that we’ve been working on…. It’s good that it’s not always about me.”

He Sort of Debuted a New Song

The phrase “Inner Child” started circling around a screen within the stage as a young boy named Josiah — meant to represent Frank’s own inner child — began playing piano and lip-syncing along to Frank singing a new song. Josiah’s little braids were poking out from underneath a black durag similar to the one worn by Frank, who introduced Josiah to the Coachella crowd as swiftly as he was dismissed in the short, but sweet moment.

He Honored His Late Brother Ryan

“It’s been so long…. But I have missed you,” Frank admitted to the audience, before vaguely addressing the elephant in the desert. “I want to talk about why I’m here because it’s not because of a new album… Not that there’s not a new album,” he teased. He then hushed over zealous fans so he could explain what did make him return to the festival he first performed at over a decade ago. “You know, these last couple years, my life changed so much…. My brother and I, we came to this festival a lot,” he said, speaking of his late brother Ryan Breaux who died in 2020 from a car accident at only 18 years old.

“I feel like I was dragged out here half the time because I hated the dust out here, I always left with a respiratory infection, or what have you. So I would avoid coming, but I would always end up here. One of my fondest memories was watching Rae Sremmurd on I don’t know what that stage is called with my brother. And Travis [Bennett], I don’t know if Travis/Taco is here, but we was just dancing in that tent to their music, and I know he would’ve been so excited to be here with all of us. I want to say thank you for the support and the ears and the love over all this time.”

Even during two of his beloved tracks, “Nikes” and “Nights,” Frank opted out of performing them live, rather prancing around the stage and playing in front of the camera, flashing a sincere smile that showed off a grill on one of his front teeth.

Maybe he needed this just as much as we did.
