Lil Wayne Reaffirms Living Legend Status With Apollo Theater NYC Show

Sunday night (April 16) wasn’t the first time Lil Wayne touched the famed Apollo Theater stage, but Weezy’s Welcome to Tha Carter Tour rumbled through Harlem to close out the seasonably warm weekend in the Big Apple in style.

The curtain dropped around 9:15 p.m. ET at the intimate venue and the thick smoke clouds began to form as the New Orleans rap deity emerged with a Jesus piece chain dangling around his neck. Weezy opened with the JAY-Z-assisted “Mr. Carter,” which took fans back to when Wayne and Hov were jockeying for the best rapper alive title in the late 2000s.

Wayne went through his humbling concert routine letting the people know “I ain’t s–t without you” before reflecting on the first time he hit the Apollo stage.

“I don’t know if it was the last time, but I know the first time I stepped on this actual stage, [Showtime at] The Apollo was still an actual show that came on television and I was on that motherf—er,” he recalled. “I think Shemar Moore was hosting it, but I was there though.”

Flanked by DJ T. Lewis and a drummer, Weezy breezed through an array of tracks from his decorated Tha Carter series while jogging the memory of the 1,500-person capacity crowd with songs including “Fireman,” “Blunt Blowin,’” “Hustler Musik,” and the Kanye West-produced “Let the Beat Build” booming through the venue speakers.

The 40-year-old found a groove inside his colossal Tha Carter III album with a medley of the triumphant “3 Peat,” “Comfortable,” “Lollipop,” and “Mrs. Officer” as attendees were hit with a laser beam light show and a heavy dose of 2008 nostalgia, at time when Weezy sat atop the rap food chain at the peak of his powers.

Wayne pressed pause 45 minutes into his set and teased a few special guests, but instead of reuniting with Drake or Nicki Minaj, fans were greeted by Young Money rappers Drizzy P, Euro, Lil Twist, and Mellow Rackz.

The jubilant energy seemed to be drained during the 15-minute intermission, but in fairness to the YM artist cameos, it’s nearly impossible to be thrown into the fire in the midst of a set from one of the greatest catalogs in rap and keep the party rolling. But when Wayne returned around 10:15 the crowd perked up like they’d just collectively downed a Red Bull to get amped for the stretch run.

Mixtape Weezy took centerstage as Dedication 2‘s lyrical masterclass “Cannon,” DJ Capcom’s “I’m Going In” featuring a then-neophyte Drake, The Leak EP’s “I’m Me,” and No Ceilings cut “Shoes” were added as setlist surprises. All that was missing were the fan-favorites “Something You Forgot” and “The Sky is the Limit.”

With all of the Verzuz chatter surrounding the Young Money honcho battling 50 Cent, Weezy’s tour set served as a stark reminder that he can go 40-deep into different bags and eras of his hall-of-fame career to compete with anyone, whether it’s commercial hits, syrupy mixtape anthems that went diamond in the streets, or prolific features.

Wayne is one of the only artists that can have a competitive Verzuz battle with himself, having “Mixtape Weezy” and other memorable loosies that exist on the internet face-off against his own albums and primary streaming service catalog.

Cam’ron surprised his hometown Harlem crowd when the Dipset rapper made an unexpected cameo in a silver tracksuit to team up with Weezy to perform their 2006 “Touch It Or Not” collaboration for the first time ever. Even more impressive, Wayne remembered his verse from the raunchy tune like he’d rehearsed it for weeks.

“Weezy, I love you! It’s the first time we ever performed this, n—a,” Killa Cam stated to Wayne before exiting.

The finish line was in sight for Wayne heading into the final turn jumping from Young Money’s “Every Girl” to his feature on French Montana’s “Pop That” as well as “HYFR” and “The Motto,” sans Drake.

Weezy fittingly capped off the marathon 40-track set with the 8x-platinum “A Milli” and even took off his long-sleeve shirt to match the fervor of his wall-to-wall Tha Carter III anthem’s rhymes.

“F–king thank you, man! Every single one of y’all, man,” he said to the crowd before recognizing the droves of fans sporting his mug on their bodies. “I see people with my face on they shirts and s–t. I appreciate you!”

Wayne wrapped up around 10:45 p.m. ET with Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” serving as the outro music, but he couldn’t leave before going over his three rules one last time.

“I must let you know three important things about myself. No. 1 is I know that we all ain’t s–t without the love from above. No. 2 is I ain’t s–t without you. Ladies and gentlemen, what’s No. 3,” Wayne asked the audience who wasted no time shouting rule No. 2 right back at him in the midst of a standing ovation.

The Welcome to Tha Carter Tour continues Monday night (April 17) with a show in Philadelphia followed by stops in Silver Spring, Maryland and Charlotte.

Bad Bunny and Grupo Frontera Team Up for New Song Together

Bad Bunny and Grupo Frontera will release a new song on Monday (April 17).

This marks the first collaboration between the two acts, and a new twist for Bad Bunny.

Although he’s a longtime fan of regional Mexican music, his new track with Grupo Frontera is only his second regional Mexican collab. Prior to this, he worked with Natanael Cano for a remix of “Soy el Diablo,” a corrido.

If Bad Bunny’s weekend preview on TikTok is any indication, this Grupo Frontera collab is a romantic cumbia.

Based on Bad Bunny’s clip, the Spanish-language ballad’s lyrics translate to: “I have only 1% left, and I’ll use it to say I’m so sorry/ If they’ve seen me in the disco with someone else, it’s just wasting my time/ Baby, I can’t lie to you; That story that they saw me all happy, that’s not true/  Nothing makes me laugh anymore, only when I see the photos and videos I see of you.”

Although a title has not yet been confirmed at press time, the new song is slated to drop tomorrow. See a teaser from the Puerto Rican star via TikTok.

Fans Choose Ice Spice’s ‘Princess Diana (Remix)’ Feat. Nicki Minaj as This Week’s Favorite New Music

Ice Spice‘s “Princess Diana (Remix)” featuring Nicki Minaj has topped this week’s new music poll.

Music fans voted in a poll published Friday (April 14) on Billboard, choosing the hip-hop collaboration as their favorite new music release of the past week.

“Princess Diana (Remix)” brought in nearly 37% of the vote, beating out new music by SZA featuring Doja Cat (“Kill Bill (Remix)”), Post Malone (“Chemical”), Kelly Clarkson (“Mine / Me”), Metallica (72 Seasons), and others.

Ice Spice’s latest track adds to her already impressive list of 2023 collabs, including the top 10 smash “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2” with PinkPantheress and “Gangsta Boo,” the Lil Tjay team-up from her Like..? EP.

The “Princess Diana (Remix)” not only provides a co-sign from Minaj, but it seamlessly brings a larger-than-life personality into the world of a very good existing song. After the Bronx rapper’s slick cadence and internal rhymes glide across the beat, Minaj provides new highlights like, “She the princess, so f— who you lames is?”

Trailing behind Ice Spice and Minaj on the fan-voted poll was SZA’s “Kill Bill (Remix)” featuring Doja Cat, with almost 28% of the vote. Placing third was Malone’s pop-centric, summer-ready single “Chemical,” which accounted for 15% of the vote.

Here’s a First Look at Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s ‘Wicked’ Characters

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are giving fans a first look at their characters in the upcoming live-action film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked.

In separate Instagram posts on Sunday (April 16), Grande revealed a photo of herself as Glinda and Erivo teased an image of herself portraying Elphaba. Jon M. Chu, who is directing the 2024 film, shared the same snapshots on his Instagram page.

“You weren’t told the whole story. What happens when you veer off the Yellow Brick Road? FIRST LOOK of the #WickedMovie … currently in production in Oz,” Chu captioned the gallery post.

In the snapshots, Grande’s Glinda is seen wearing the good witch’s signature puffy pink dress as she ascends a staircase, while Erivo’s Elphaba dons the Wicked Witch of the West’s classic green face and black outfit.

In early April, Grande revealed that the filming of Wicked was already halfway done. “Savoring every millisecond left with my Galinda (although she’ll be with me irrevocably, forever). she shows me so many new things every day,” the singer-actress wrote in a lengthy Instagram post.

It was announced in November 2021 that Grande would be playing Glinda opposite Erivo’s Elphaba in the long-awaited big-screen adaptation of the prequel to The Wizard of Oz. The film also stars Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard. Other cast members include Keala Settle, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode and Ethan Slater.

Director Chu previously noted that Wicked will be split into two films, with the first part arriving in November 2024 and the follow-up scheduled for the following year.

Morgan Wallen’s ‘One Thing at a Time’ Tops Billboard 200 for Sixth Straight Week

Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time holds atop the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated April 22) for a sixth consecutive and total week at No. 1. The set earned 167,000 equivalent album units in the United States in the week ending April 13 (down 3%), according to Luminate. One Thing at a Time debuted at No. 1 on the chart dated March 18 and has held firm at No. 1 since.

Also in the top 10 of the new Billboard 200 chart, NF notches his fourth top 10-charting effort as Hope bows at No. 2, while Linkin Park’s former No. 1 Meteora re-enters the list at No. 8 after its 20th anniversary reissue.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new April 22, 2023-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Tuesday (April 18). For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

Of One Thing at a Time’s 167,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending April 13, SEA units comprise 158,500 (down 2%, equaling 211.05 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 36 songs), album sales comprise 6,000 (down 24%) and TEA units comprise 2,500 (down 1%).

NF’s Hope debuts at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, scoring the artist his fourth top 10-charting effort. The set launches with 123,000 equivalent album units. Of that sum, album sales comprise 80,500 (making it the top-selling album of the week), SEA units comprise 41,500 (equaling 56.85 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 13 songs — NF’s biggest streaming week yet), and TEA units comprise 1,000.

Hope’s handsome first-week sales figure — NF’s second-largest sales week ever — was bolstered by the album’s availability in an autographed CD edition in his webstore, a Target-exclusive CD with a poster packaged inside, four deluxe CD/merch boxed sets, and a both a white vinyl and a standard black vinyl edition.

Hope is the fourth album to debut at No. 2 behind One Thing at a Time, following Melanie Martinez’s Portals (April 15-dated chart), Jimin’s FACE (April 8) and TWICE’s Ready to Be (March 25). It’s not unusual for an album to spend a lengthy amount of time at No. 1 and end up blocking a number of albums from the top slot. Last year, for example, eight different albums peaked at No. 2 behind Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti.

Taylor Swift’s chart-topping Midnights rises 6-3 on the new Billboard 200 with 60,000 equivalent album units earned (down 2%), while SZA’s former leader SOS rises 5-4 with just under 60,000 units (down 7%). Martinez’s Portals dips 2-5 in its second week, with 48,000 (down 66%). Wallen’s former No. 1 Dangerous: The Double Album bumps 8-6 with 47,000 (up 7%), and Luke Combs’ Gettin’ Old is a non-mover at No. 7 with 46,000 (down 15%).

Linkin Park’s chart-topping Meteora re-enters the chart at No. 8, following the album’s 20th anniversary deluxe reissue on April 7. The set, which spun off such Billboard Hot 100 hits as “Numb” and “Faint” in 2003-04, returns with 38,500 equivalent album units earned (up 635%). Of that sum, album sales comprise 19,500, SEA units comprise 17,000 (equaling 23.65 million on-demand official streams of the set’s tracks) and TEA units comprise 2,000.

Meteora marked Linkin Park’s first of six No. 1s on the Billboard 200, when it debuted atop the chart dated April 12, 2003. The group’s second studio album spent two weeks atop the list. Previously, the rock band logged a pair of No. 2-peaking efforts with its debut studio set Hybrid Theory and the remix project Reanimation (both in 2002).

The 20th anniversary reissue was led by its first single, the from-the-vaults track “Lost” that was recorded for Meteora but didn’t make the original album’s final tracklist. The cut features the vocals of the band’s late lead singer Chester Bennington, who died in 2017. “Lost” debuted at No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 (Feb. 25, 2023 chart) and marked the group’s first new top 40 hit in over a decade. It’s one of a number of unreleased songs on the deluxe Meteora reissue, which also includes demo recordings, live cuts and other rarities.

Meteora was reissued in multiple expansive formats, including an 89-track digital download and streaming edition, a three-CD set, a four vinyl LP box and a super deluxe boxed set priced at $199.98 (containing five vinyl LPs, four CDs, three DVDs, a book and collectibles). All versions of the album, new and old, are combined for tracking and charting purposes.

Rounding out the top 10 of the new Billboard 200 is a pair of former No. 1s: Metro Boomin’s Heroes & Villains (steady at No. 9 with 36,000 equivalent album units earned; down 14%) and Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti (11-10 with 35,000; down 2%).

Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes a thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. Karol G Delivers Sizzling Performances of ‘Mañana Será Bonito’ Songs in ‘SNL’ Debut: Watch

Karol G brought songs from her history-making Mañana Será Bonito album to Saturday Night Live on April 15.

During her musical guest debut on the NBC sketch comedy series, the Colombian singer-songwriter delivered sizzling performances of “Mientras Me Curo Del Cora” and “Tus Gafitas,” from her new Billboard 200 chart-topping release. The episode was hosted by Cuban-born actress Ana de Armas.

Sporting pink hair and backed by a group of singers, Karol G opened with a laid-back rendition of “Mientras Me Curo Del Cora,” which peaked at No. 8 on Billboard‘s Hot Latin Songs chart in March. She returned with the backing of a full band, giving an edgy performance of “Tus Gafitas” while donning a spiky black top and posing alongside a black convertible.

Both tracks appear on Karol G’s fourth album, Mañana Será Bonito, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in March. The set made history as the first all-Spanish-language leader by a woman, and marked the singer’s first No. 1 album on the chart.

Elsewhere in the SNL episode, Karol G made a cameo in the “Spanish Class” sketch alongside Blonde star de Armas. In the skit, the singer wears a black T-shirt with the word Photoshop crossed out, a direct reference to her disappointment with GQ Mexico over her recent magazine cover.

“Today my GQ magazine cover was made public, a cover with an image that does not represent me,” she wrote on Instagram in early March. “My face doesn’t look like that, my body doesn’t look like that and I feel very happy and comfortable with how I look naturally.”

E-40 Calls Out Sacramento Kings Organization for ‘Racial Bias’ After Being Kicked Out of Playoff Game

After being kicked out of Game 1 of the Golden State Warriors versus Sacramento Kings first-round playoff game on Saturday night (April. 16), E-40 lambasted the Kings’ organization for “racial bias” when handling his confrontation with a female fan.

40, known as a Golden State Warriors fan and frequent attendee, sent a statement to Billboard, recalling the incident involving him addressing the heckler in “an assertive but polite manner.”

“On Saturday night, I was subjected to disrespectful heckling over the course of the Warriors-Kings game in Sacramento. During the fourth quarter, I finally turned around and addressed one heckler in an assertive but polite manner. Yet, shortly thereafter, Kings’ security approached me, assumed that I instigated the encounter and proceeded to kick me out of the arena,” writes 40.

He also acknolwedges that despite his accomplishments as a musician and businessman, “racial bias” continued to be the norm and played an intergral role in his departure from the game.

“Unfortunately, it was yet another reminder that — despite my success and accolades as a musician and entrepreneur — racial bias remains prevalent. Security saw a disagreement between a Black man and a white woman and immediately assumed that I was at fault,” he says.

At the end of his statement, 40 said that he hopes the Kings organization will do a thorough investigation on the matter and that those “involved are held accountable for their behavior.”

“I’ve attended countless NBA games throughout my lifetime and have always prided myself in my professionalism, so this experience has been jarring. I was absolutely humiliated by the Kings’ security team and I’m calling on the franchise to investigate the appalling conduct that transpired.”

He adds, “I’m truly grateful for my fans and supporters who have reached out to express their concern and disappointment regarding these disheartening circumstances and I hope those involved are held accountable for their behavior.”
