BABYMETAL Reunite With Thai Rapper F.HERO for Bangkok Concert

BABYMETAL made a stop in Bangkok, Thailand, over the weekend (May 28) for the second show of its first headlining Asia tour, performing for fans at the True Icon Hall.

During the set, the kawaii metal group — a trio again with new member MOMOMETAL officially joining long-standing members SU-METAL and MOAMETAL — invited the Thai hip-hop artist F.HERO onstage for a live rendition of their collaborative track “PA PA YA!!!”

The last time BABYMETAL and F.HERO performed onstage together was about four years ago, at the Yokohama Arena in June 2019 for the BABYMETAL AWAKENS – THE SUN ALSO RISES – concert where they performed the song live for the first time together. The summery metal number was performed during the latter half of the set at True Icon Hall, and F.HERO’s rapping hyped up the local crowd, resulting in towels being waved around wildly throughout the venue.

The next stop on the Metal Galaxy band’s itinerary is Hong Kong on Wednesday (May 30), and the trio will then hit Taipei on Friday and Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. The Taipei concert on June 2 at ZEPP New Taipei will be shown live in movie theaters in all 47 prefectures across Japan, followed by an archived showing on June 4.

The trio will then travel to Australia for shows in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne.

Azealia Banks Calls Matty Healy a ‘Lame Poser’ Following Ice Spice Comments

While The 1975‘s Matty Healy thinks the controversy surrounding him and Ice Spice “doesn’t actually matter,” rapper Azealia Banks clearly disagrees.

In a scathing post to her Instagram Stories on Tuesday (May 30), Banks tore into Healy after the “Somebody Else” singer lashed out at his critics. “Does Matt Healy know that no one thinks The 1975 makes good music and that he’s a lame poser with a trash cliche band name that actually means nothing,” she wrote on her story. “He’s clearly so pressed that a black girl who knows nothing about him or his music is making more moves and more money than him.”

Banks continued, calling Healy an “outrageous small white opinionated male musician” and questioning his knowledge about the industry itself. “Does he know that black women are more coveted in the industry because there’s BIG BUSINESS in female rap,” she wrote. “You’re not a star, nor are you good at whatever this crappy a– mid-2000’s indie pitchfork darling fantasy you’re trying to sell. Ice Spice has MILES more originality than you will ever.”

The controversy first started back in February when Healy was a guest on a since-removed episode of The Adam Friedland Show and laughed at racist and fatphobic jokes about the rapper — including comparing her to an “Inuit Spice Girl” and a “chubby Chinese lady.” While Healy later semi-apologized to Ice Spice during a concert, he called out those who criticized him online for his laughter in a New Yorker profile on Monday (May 29). “You’re either deluded or you are, sorry, a liar,” he said. “You’re either lying that you are hurt, or you’re a bit mental for being hurt.”

In a different post on her Stories, Banks moved on to addressing Healy’s rumored girlfriend Taylor Swift directly, claiming she could do better. “He’s not on the level of powerful p— u worked HELLA Hard to build,” she wrote. “Ugh this dude is a full incel. You cannot be letting him climb the rich white c—-ie mountain, sis.”

Representatives for Healy declined to comment on the record for this story; Billboard has also reached out to representatives for Swift.

10 Best Musical Moments on ‘Succession’

“L to the OG, dude be the OG…”

After four seasons and five years on air, HBO’s Succession came to a close May 28, delivering what’s being called one of the most “feel-bad” finales in history. But thanks to all of its striking plot twists, irony-loaded societal commentary and numerous brilliant one-liners — including “Can’t make a ‘Tom-lette’ without breaking some ‘Greggs,’” of course — the series will forever be known as one of the cleverest shows of all time.

That goes for its music use, too. Powered by an award-winning original score by composer Nicholas Britell, the show masterfully balances classical styles with modern influences almost as well as it balances the conflicting ideologies and interests of the American white-collar elite. It’s not uncommon, for instance, to hear a sprawling orchestral suite in the same episode as a heavy 2000s rap diss track. In fact, Succession‘s own theme song is a genius combination of the two.

The show follows the lives of Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and his four children — Connor (Alan Ruck), Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Siobhan (Sarah Snook) and Roman Roy (Kieran Culkin) — as they each scheme to take over their father’s billion-dollar media conglomerate once he steps down. There’s betrayal, heartbreak and family civil wars that wreak devastation on the company’s employees — and sometimes, the whole world, as proved by its final season when Kendall and Roman pull strings to help elect a fascist U.S. president in order to protect their own vanity.

And while the characters are capable of atrocious behavior, it’s hard not to love them. So as viewers say good-bye to the hilariously heinous favorite executives at Waystar Royco, Billboard has rounded up all the best musical moments Succession has given us over the years, from Kendall’s iconic “L to the OG” performance to Connor’s endearing Leonard Cohen tribute at sibling karaoke.

See them below, but beware: Spoilers ahead!

Taylor Swift’s ‘Cruel Summer’ Returns to Hot 100 for First Time Since 2019

Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer,” from her 2019 LP Lover, is back on the Billboard Hot 100, returning to the chart dated June 3 at No. 49.

Fittingly timed to the lead-up to Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial kickoff to summer, the song re-enters with 8.9 million official streams (up 2%), 898,000 radio airplay audience impressions (up 128%), and 1,000 downloads sold (up 18%) in the United States in the May 19-25 tracking week, according to Luminate.

“Cruel Summer” spent two weeks on the chart during its initial chart run. It debuted at its No. 29 high on the Sept. 7, 2019, Hot 100 – the week that Lover debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, becoming Swift’s sixth leader – and fell to No. 71 the following week.

All 18 songs from Lover landed on the Hot 100 when the album debuted atop the Billboard 200, with “Cruel Summer” one of six to chart in the Hot 100’s top 40 that week.

“Cruel Summer” has been gaining momentum in recent weeks, as Swift has been performing the song on her Eras Tour. The concert encompasses 10 acts, covering nine of her LPs. The Lover era kicks off the show, with her performing, in order, “Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince,” “Cruel Summer,” “The Man,” “You Need To Calm Down,” “Lover” and “The Archer.”

Swift charts two additional songs on the latest Hot 100, both from last year’s Midnights: former eight-week No. 1 “Anti-Hero” – her longest-leading hit – at No. 12 and latest single “Karma,” up 32-27. The latter, which debuted at its No. 9 high in November, is slated to soar on next week’s, June 10-dated chart, thanks to a new remix featuring Ice Spice, released May 26. The pair performed the team-up together live May 26-28 at the tour’s latest stops at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Since its release (through May 25), “Cruel Summer” has drawn 364.1 million official on-demand streams and 13.7 million in airplay audience (while not being formally promoted to radio) and sold 34,000 downloads in the U.S.

Singer DaniLeigh Arrested for DUI, Hit & Run

DaniLeigh has been arrested for DUI and hit and run, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by Billboard from the Miami Beach Police Department in Florida. TMZ was the first to report the news of her arrest.

According to the police report, the singer was arrested in the early morning hours of Tuesday (May 30). Law enforcement officers were dispatched after witnesses saw a gray Mercedes-Benz speeding before hitting a moped, and continued traveling. One witness told police that “multiple people attempted to get the driver’s attention and advised her that she was dragging the moped, however, the driver never stop,” according to the report.

The arrest affidavit also states that when an officer pulled the car over, the officer “could smell a strong odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle,” and the policeman noticed the driver — whose license identified her as Danielle Curiel (DaniLeigh’s birth name) — had “sluggish” motor skills and also denied hitting anyone with her car.

She was given a field sobriety test, which the report states she “failed to perform to the standard,” and was then arrested. She was later given two breath tests, according to the affidavit. The first breath sample came back with a breath alcohol level of 0.145, and the second at 0.148; anything 0.08 and above is considered impaired, according to Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

Curiel was booked on three felony charges: leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury, driving under the influence, and damage to property or person.

The driver of the moped was transported to a trauma center. According to the police affidavit, the moped driver suffered a kidney laceration and a spinal fracture, with the report noting that they were “non-life-threatening injuries.” The scooter itself “sustained major damage,” per the report.

Billboard has reached out to DaniLeigh’s rep for comment.

Jewel Puts Her Own Spin on the National Anthem at the Indy 500 & Divides Fans

Before 33 cars battled it out to see who would win the 2023 Indianapolis 500 on Sunday (May 28), singer-songwriter Jewel appeared at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” While the performance went off without a hitch, fans were left divided over her rendition of the national anthem.

The “You Were Meant for Me” singer took to the stage in an all white ensemble and cowboy hat to perform with her acoustic guitar. Rather than a straight-forward take, Jewel’s version leaned more country and folksy, which resulted in differing opinions about her performance.

“As a former Navy musician, who has played and sung this song easily over 1,000 times in various settings, the answer on this very loose rendition is a Hard Pass. Love Jewel – but the anthem isn’t a 90s pop ballad,” one Twitter user responded to the Indy 500’s tweet of the performance video.

Another user chimed in to add that Jewel’s rendition is “likely one of the best versions I’ve heard. Artists have artistic license to make slight changes and this is melodically in line with the original. She just sang different partials up or down that would fit the chord. One. Of. The. Best. Ever.”

Another was ambivalent about Jewel and her take on the national anthem. “Hmm. I was expecting to hate it hearing the uproar. I thought it was a nice arrangement and fit her style,” the person shared. “Personally, I’ve never really cared for her or her voice, but there has certainly been much worse renditions of our national anthem than this one.”

Ted Nugent also chimed in and stated that Jewel’s version of the song was “f–kin beautiful.”

Jewel has yet to share a response to the mixed reviews.

Halle Bailey Goes Undercover to Sneak Into ‘Little Mermaid’ Showing at Movie Theater: Watch

A group of movie-goers seeing The Little Mermaid in theaters recently had no idea that the Little Mermaid herself was in their midst. In a new TikTok, the live action Disney remake’s star Halle Bailey revealed that she basically snuck into a theater to watch the film by wearing a low-key outfit, looking unrecognizable from her character Ariel.

Bailey’s video shows the 23-year-old star disguised in a pair of sunglasses and a face mask as she nabs a bucket of popcorn and makes her way to the screening. Wearing a dark black jacket with her hair returned to brown from Ariel’s famous red shade, fans taking selfies with Little Mermaid posters in the background don’t even notice that the real-life Bailey is walking past them.

“Can’t believe the little mermaid is the #1 movie in the world you guys!!” the singer-actress captioned the TikTok. “Went to the theatre to go see it last night.”

The film definitely made a splash Memorial Day weekend following its global premiere, bringing in an estimated $117.5 million. The opening gives it a similarly successful opening performance as 2019′s Aladdin, but while one of Disney’s top earners overall, The Little Mermaid still falls short of 2017′s Beauty and the Beast, which opened to more than $170 million, and 2019′s The Lion King, which brought in more than $190 million in its first weekend.

Bailey celebrated the film’s Friday (May 26) theatrical premiere with a sentimental tweet on the day of, sharing photos from the shoot and writing: “Can’t believe it today is the day!! the little mermaid is out everywhere in theaters now. This was my first time ever doing a film like this, and words can’t describe how immensely grateful i am to have had this experience with such a beautiful group of people …please go watch and enjoy with your loved ones!! more bts pics soon come.”

SZA’s ‘Kill Bill’ Breaks Record for Most Weeks at No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart

SZA becomes the sole owner of one of the biggest records in the history of Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart as her single “Kill Bill” achieves an unprecedented 21st week at the summit. The record-breaking week, on the chart dated June 3, breaks “Kill Bill” from a tie with Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus), which slides to second place with 20 weeks on top.

For its all-time coronation week, “Kill Bill” rebounds from No. 2 after a one-week reign for Lil Durk’s “All My Life,” featuring J. Cole. The latter track is only the third title that has evicted “Kill Bill” from the top spot since the juggernaut single debuted at No. 1 on the list dated Dec. 24, 2022. “All My Life” follows The Weeknd and Ariana Grande’s “Die for You” and Drake’s “Search and Rescue,” each of which managed to stall the reign for only one week.

As “Kill Bill,” released on Top Dawg/RCA Records, shakes off the interruption and re-charts its course into chart history, here’s an updated look at the tracks with the most weeks at No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs since the list became an all-encompassing genre survey in 1958:

Most Weeks at No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs:

  • 21, “Kill Bill,” SZA, 2022-23
  • 20, “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X feat. Billy Ray Cyrus, 2019
  • 18, “Industry Baby,” Lil Nas X & Jack Harlow, 2021-22
  • 18, “One Dance,” Drake feat. WizKid & Kyla, 2016
  • 16, “Blurred Lines,” Robin Thicke feat. T.I. + Pharrell, 2013
  • 15, “Be Without You,” Mary J. Blige, 2006

In the latest tracking week of May 19-25, “Kill Bill” collected 17.3 million official streams in the United States (down 5% from the week prior), 1,000 downloads sold (a 4% drop) and 69.2 million in radio audience (a 5% slip). The totals translate to a 2-3 backtrack on R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs, an 11-21 drop on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales (affected by the arrival of many Tina Turner songs following the icon’s death on May 24) and a No. 4 repeat on the all-genre Radio Songs chart.

The “Kill Bill” domination has aligned with the similar supremacy of its parent album, SOS. The set has spent 20 weeks at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, extending its mark for the most ever by any album by a woman. Earlier this month, it ended the 54-year record-holding reign of Aretha Franklin’s Aretha Now, which logged a then-record 17 weeks atop the list in 1968.

Bad Bunny’s ‘Where She Goes’ Blasts In at No. 1 on Billboard Global 200 Chart

Bad Bunny’s “Where She Goes” bounds in at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 chart (dated June 3). With the launch, he becomes the first soloist with as many as three No. 1s since the survey began.

Meanwhile, FIFTY FIFTY’s “Cupid” spends a second week atop the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. survey.

Plus, Shakira’s ballad “Acróstico” ascends to the Global Excl. U.S. top 10, from No. 11 to No. 8.

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts, which started in September 2020, rank songs based on streaming and sales activity culled from more than 200 territories around the world, as compiled by Luminate. The Global 200 is inclusive of worldwide data and the Global Excl. U.S. chart comprises data from territories excluding the United States.

Chart ranks are based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of audio and video music services, as well as download sales, the latter of which reflect purchases from full-service digital music retailers from around the world, with sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites excluded from the charts’ calculations.

Bad Bunny ‘Goes’ Straight to No. 1 on Global 200

Bad Bunny’s “Where She Goes” launches atop the Billboard Global 200, with 71 million streams and 3,000 sold worldwide May 19-25, following its May 18 release. The Spanish-language song arrives as his third No. 1 on the chart, after “Un x100to,” with Grupo Frontera, for two weeks earlier in May, and “Dakiti,” with Jhay Cortez (now Jhayco), for three weeks in November-December 2020.

Bad Bunny becomes the first soloist with three Global 200 No. 1s; overall, he’s second only to BTS, with six. Justin Bieber, BLACKPINK, Drake, Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift each boast two.

“Where She Goes” marks Bad Bunny’s first Global 200 entry with no accompanying artists since he released his LP Un Verano Sin Ti, which dominated the U.S.-based Billboard 200 for 13 weeks in May-October 2022.

Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s “Ella Baila Sola” dips to No. 2 on the Global 200 after three weeks at No. 1, having become the chart’s first leader for the regional Mexican genre.

FIFTY FIFTY’s “Cupid” slips to No. 3 from its No. 2 Global 200 high; Yng Lvcas and Peso Pluma’s “La Bebe” retreats to No. 4 from its No. 3 best; and Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” keeps at No. 5, after 12 weeks on top in January-April.

‘Cupid’ Hits Target Again Atop Global Excl. U.S.

FIFTY FIFTY’s “Cupid” adds a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart, despite drops of 6% in streams, to 61 million, and 13% in sales, to 2,000, outside the U.S. May 19-25.

Yng Lvcas and Peso Pluma’s “La Bebe” logs a fourth week at its No. 2 Global Excl. U.S. best.

Bad Bunny’s “Where She Goes” debuts at No. 3 on Global Excl. U.S., with 48.1 million streams and 1,000 sold in its first full tracking week. He notches his record-extending 14th top 10 on the tally, further distancing himself from runners-up BTS and Swift, each with 10.

Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” holds at No. 4 on Global Excl. U.S., following a record-tying (with Harry Styles’ “As It Was”) 13 weeks at No. 1 beginning upon its debut in January, and Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s “Ella Baila Sola” descends 3-5, after reaching No. 2.

Elsewhere in the Global Excl. U.S. top 10, Shakira’s “Acróstico” climbs 11-8, up 6% to 55.6 million streams outside the U.S. The Colombian-born superstar — who was crowned Woman of the Year at the first Billboard Latin Women in Music celebration May 6 — earns her fourth top 10 on the chart, all within the last year, with three in 2023. “TQG,” with Karol G, topped the March 11 survey, upon its debut; Bizarrap and Shakira’s “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” hit No. 2 in January; and “Te Felicito,” with Rauw Alejandro, reached No. 6 in June 2022.

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts (dated June 3, 2023) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (May 31, a day later than usual due to the Memorial Day holiday in the U.S. May 29).
