Manuel Turizo Scores Career-High Debut on Latin Pop Airplay Thanks to ‘Copa Vacía’ With Shakira

Manuel Turizo rewrites his career-best debut on Billboard’s Latin Pop Airplay chart as “Copa Vacía,” his collaboration with Shakira, bows at No. 4 on the chart dated July 15, his first top 10 launch, among 12 top 10s.

According to Luminate, “Copa Vacía” traces its start in the upper region on Latin Pop Airplay to 4 million in audience impressions earned in the U.S. during the June 30-July 6 tracking week.

With the new top 10 entry, Shakira collects her 42nd top 10, dating back to the four-week champ “Estoy Aquí” in 1996. She ties with Ricky Martin for the second-most top 10s among all acts, both with 42, just behind Enrique Iglesias who leads with 45. Here’s the scoreboard:

For Shakira, “Copa Vacía” starts at an equal No. 6 as her predecessor, “Acróstico” which rose to No. 2 in its seventh week (dated July 8).

Back to Turizo, as mentioned, “Copa Vacía” becomes the Colombian’s best debut to date, after 25 chart visits. Previously, his best start was his last entry, “Vagabundo,” with Sebastián Yatra and Beéle, at No. 12 in June; the song later peaked at No. 6 (July 8-dated ranking).

Local News Anchor Re-Enacts Beyonce’s ‘America Has a Problem’ to Welcome Renaissance Tour to Philly

According to Beyoncé, “America Has a Problem” — but Philadelphia’s Fox 29 news host Alex Holley is unbothered.

Leading up to the arrival of Bey’s Renaissance Tour in Philly on Wednesday night (July 12), the Good Day Philly co-host got dressed in a costume that mirrors Bey’s own when she performs “America Has a Problem” in order to pay homage to the singer and celebrate the highly anticipated tour touching down Stateside at last.

The funny video kicks off with Holley — wearing a black and gold sequined dress and dark cat-eye sunglasses to evoke Beyoncé’s Mugler bee outfit — behind the news desk, mimicking the instrumental’s introductory dance moves. With the help of a crew member, a fan blows air through her honey-colored locks as she looks in the camera and says, “We got a problem in the studio, because Philly! Are you ready for Beyoncé? I know I am!”

Fellow hosts on Good Day Philly join in on the shenanigans, dressed in all black as Holley’s backup dancers. “Heard you got that D for me/ Pray your love is deep for me/ I’mma make you go weak for me/ Make you wait a whole week for me,” Holley lip-syncs in the video. “Had to make sure Philly was ready to kick off #RENAISSANCEWORLDTOUR on the news!!!!!” she captioned the post.

Fans in the comments section flocked to tell the host she nailed it. One user wrote, “It took me far too long to figure out you weren’t Beyoncé!” while another added, “Lol we found the perfect opening act to Beyoncé.”

Bey’s tour stop in Philadelphia marks her first in the United States since the Renaissance World Tour kicked off; the performer will continue throughout the U.S. until her final Sept. 27 gig at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

Yng Lvcas & Peso Pluma’s ‘La Bebe’ Tops Latin Airplay Chart

Yng Lvcas picks up his first No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart as “La Bebe,” with Peso Pluma, ascends 2-1 to lead the list dated July 15. The collab checks into the penthouse on the overall Latin chart in its fourth week at No. 1 on Latin Rhythm Airplay.

“La Bebe” takes over Latin Airplay with 10 million audience impressions, up 1% from the week prior, earned in the U.S. in the week ending July 6, according to Luminate.

The song replaces Grupo Frontera and Bad Bunny’s “X100to” from its six-week domination, dipping 2-1 with a 14% decline in impressions, to 9.3 million.

“La Bebe” grants Lvcas his first Latin Airplay champ, who joins four other acts who have also taken over the tally in 2023 with their first leaders: Fuerza Regida and Grupo Frontera through “Bebe Dame” (one week, March 25), Marshmello with the Manuel Turizo-assisted “El Merengue” (one week, June 10), and his contemporary Peso Pluma, as “Ella Baila Sola,” with Eslabon Armado, placed the Mexican at the lead for one week (June 17). Thus, the latter collects his second ruler.

Further, “La Bebe” is the only collaborative charting effort by Lvcas on any Billboard chart. He captured his maiden entry on any Billboard tally when the original version of the song, sans Pluma, debuted on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart at No. 152, reaching a No. 2 high in April, after the remix with Pluma dropped.

Disclosure to Release New Album This Week

Disclosure is coming back in a big way.

On Wednesday (July 12), the Lawrence brothers announced a new album, Alchemy, will be out this Friday.

The 11-track LP is their first since 2020’s Energy, and their first to drop since the pair left Capitol Records. Alchemy will be out via the brothers’ own Apollo Recordings, in partnership with AWAL, the independent distribution and label division of Kobalt Music Group.

“This record is a celebration of us feeling liberated right now,” Guy Lawrence says in a press release. “We’re no longer signed to a major record label. We’re not going to tour this record. We can do whatever we like and be super creative.”

A statement about the album also reveals that “Alchemy was written while the British duo were at two very different points in their lives. On one hand, Guy was recently married and settling into a new home in Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles. On the other, Howard was reeling from heartbreak and exhausted from a 150-date tour.”

“There was this combination of deep heartbreak and sadness, but also deep admiration and appreciation,” Howard Lawrence says of this period. “Let’s turn this horrible feeling into something beautiful. The whole idea was to channel pain into beauty—which, in hindsight, is always the aim.”

Alchemy will not incorporate any features or samples, instead promising a “back to basics” approach and production melding jungle, breaks, “trance-like supersaw synth riffs” and club tracks” See the album’s cover art below.

In tandem with the LP’s release, Disclosure will host a pair of release parties in London on Thursday and Friday.

This announcement comes on the heels of the 10-year anniversary of Disclosure’s landmark debut album, Settle, released in June 2013 and voted the No. 1 EDM album of the decade by Billboard. The LP was commemorated with a deluxe anniversary edition due in August.

Jelly Roll Scores First Hot Rock & Alternative Songs No. 1 With ‘Need a Favor’

Jelly Roll’s “Need a Favor” spends its first week at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Rock Songs charts, rising 2-1 on both July 15-dated tallies.

The track earned 32.4 million airplay audience impressions and 11.5 million official U.S. streams and sold 5,000 downloads June 30-July 6, according to Luminate.

The singer-songwriter earns his first No. 1 on each chart. He first appeared with “Son of a Sinner,” which hit No. 3 on Hot Rock Songs and No. 4 on Hot Rock & Alternative Songs in September 2022.

“Need a Favor” also rises to No. 3 on Hot Country Songs. It’s his highest-charting song on the survey, having surpassed the No. 8 peak of “Son of a Sinner.”

Concurrently, as previously reported, “Need a Favor” crowns Mainstream Rock Airplay, becoming Jelly Roll’s second ruler on the ranking, after “Dead Man Walking” in May 2022. He is the first soloist to send two initial entries to No. 1 in the chart’s four-decade history.

In June, “Need a Favor” made crossover history, becoming the first song to have reached the top 10 of both Mainstream Rock Airplay and Country Airplay; it rises 7-6 on the latter list. (“Son of a Sinner” hit No. 1 on Country Airplay for a week in January 2023.)

“Need a Favor” is the lead single from Whitsitt Chapel, Jelly Roll’s seventh studio album. Released June 2, the set debuted at No. 1 on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart dated June 17 and has earned 288,000 equivalent album units to date.

‘Ghosts’ Stars Devan Chandler Long, Rose McIver & More Share Their Favorite Songs to Sing in the Car

Shut up and … sing? The lovable paranormal beings and the “livings” of CBS’ Ghosts may not be trapped in a car like Sasappis’ ex-girlfriend Jessica, nor have they belted out Rihanna’s 2007 hit “Shut Up and Drive” on the sitcom, but they — or at least, the actors portraying them — did leave Woodstone Manor to take part in Carpool Karaoke: The Series.

In a new episode of the Apple TV+ series born from James Corden’s viral segment from The Late Late Show, the sitcom’s stars Devon Chandler Long (who plays Thorfinn), Rose McIver (Samantha), Utkarsh Ambudkar (Jay), Rebecca Wisocky (Hetty) and Román Zaragoza (Sasappis) not only argue about the best of the dead, but also show off Ambudkar’s freestyling skills. And of course, they sing.

Among the hits the cast took on while cruising around in a black SUV were a trio of Billboard Hot 100 No. 1s: Tiffany’s 1987 teen-pop anthem “I Think We’re Alone Now,” Silk Sonic’s sensual 2021 slow jam “Leave the Door Open” and Meat Loaf’s classic 1993 power ballad “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That).” But perhaps most fittingly, the castmates tried their vocals with Harry Belafonte’s “Jump in the Line,” which was featured in Beetlejuice, the 1988 film starring Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis and Catherine O’Hara about a family of “livings” who move into a home occupied by … yup, ghosts — just like the CBS sitcom that would come more than 30 years later.

While the Ghosts stars belted out some hits together for five-time Emmy-winner Carpool Karaoke: The Series, the songs they prefer to sing while driving around on their own are more varied, ranging from shoegaze to the Disneyverse to swing and beyond. “I pretty much blast all music from the ’50s to the ’90s, and go real hard on singing (more like yelling) the wrong lyrics with the windows down,” the actor, who plays Viking ghost Thorfinn, tells Billboard. “I’m 100% that guy at the traffic light putting on a concert in his car while everyone else rolls up their windows praying for the light to go green.”

“When I’m singing, my imagination always goes straight into music video mode, where I just create montage sequences like the ones that are in every ’80s movie. And I just let the music create the scenes in my mind that usually star a hilarious version of myself with my friends, family and even my dogs in some sort of cheesy music video story that would fit the message of the song.”

“I go through phases every few weeks or so of what songs I’m singing on repeat during my drives,” he concludes. His current three favorite songs to sing:

Neil Diamond, “Forever in Blue Jeans“
“I don’t know where this song has been my whole life. I just scored a vintage Neil Diamond shirt at an old second-hand store and started going back through his catalog again when ‘Forever In Blue Jeans’ came up and it just grabbed me,” the actor shares. “The song just makes me so happy while I sing it — no explanation — and the louder I sing it, the happier I get. So if you are one of the unfortunate commuters stuck at a red light beside me, just know that I’m in a real good mood and would love it if you joined in! Car concert duets with strangers turns traffic into the highlight of my day.”

Peter Gabriel, “In Your Eyes“
“Peter Gabriel’s voice is forged from marbled chocolate ice cream cake,” Long gushes. “If my energy is waning and my spirit is a little dull, I always call on Peter to help me transition toward a better frequency. He just has this ability to lift me when I need it. I have to play him louder than my voice so I can’t hear myself murder the notes; it just has a magical way of lifting me and shedding any heavy energy that I was carrying with me.”

“I don’t think I fully got David Byrne when I was a teen,” Wisocky admits. “But his voice, his poetry, movements, weirdnesses — all of it — he’s brilliant and his music lifts me up. I loved it then, but it resonates so differently with me now. The production of [Byrne’s] American Utopia on Broadway featuring choreography by Annie-B Parson was one of the most thrilling things I’ve ever seen.”

“As much as I love atmospheric and dreamy shoegaze music, when I want to sing along with a song, I want that track to have a lot of punch — I want that personality and pizzazz that makes you want to slap the steering wheel to punctuate the phrases,” explains McIver, who plays “living” Sam. “I’m an actor — I guess I love the character that comes with singing along with higher-intensity songs. Backstreet Boys Are Loving Coldplay’s ‘Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)’ Cover

Coldplay got everybody to rock their bodies during a recent Music of the Spheres tour stop, where the band performed a cover Backstreet Boys’ 1997 classic, “Everybody (Backstreet’s’ Back).”

The boy band took to Instagram on Wednesday (July 12) to share excitement over Coldplay’s cover, posting a clip from the performance, in which frontman Chris Martin is seen singing the hook with the whole audience singing along with him.

“Buzzing from @coldplay’s cover of Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)! Truly an honor,” the Backstreet Boys captioned the post, which you can see here.

Coldplay continues to take its Music of the Spheres tour across the world through the end of this year, as they added a series of new North American dates for the fall, slated to kick off at Seattle’s Lumen Field on Sept. 20 and wind down on Oct. 1 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

Back in January, the group revealed in an interview with Toronto’s City News that they’re nearing completion of the follow-up to their 2021 album, Music of the Spheres. “We’re finishing an album called Moon Music,” Martin told the outlet, “which is the second Music Of The Spheres volume, but that won’t come out for a little bit.”

Snubs & Surprises in the 2023 Emmy Nominations

For the most part, the nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards went according to plan, but as ever, there were some snubs and surprises.

Nominations were announced Wednesday (July 12) from the Hollywood Athletic Club, the site of the first Emmy ceremony in 1949. The virtual ceremony was hosted by Emmy-nominated actress Yvette Nicole Brown and Television Academy chair Frank Scherma.

Succession was the year’s most nominated program, with 27 nominations, followed by The Last of Us (24), The White Lotus (23), Ted Lasso (21) and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (14).

Adam Blackstone, Nicholas Britell and pop titans Ed Sheeran and Max Martin were among the nominees in the seven music categories. Here’s a full report. And here, RuPaul, John Legend, Riley Keough and more stars celebrated their Emmy nominations.

There were 38 first-time performer nominees this season, including Jessica Chastain (George & Tammy), Taron Egerton (Black Bird), Riley Keough (Daisy Jones & The Six), James Marsden (Jury Duty), Jenna Ortega (Wednesday), Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, Saturday Night Live and Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World), Daniel Radcliffe (Weird: The Al Yankovic Story) and Jason Segel (Shrinking).

In addition to Pascal, performers with multiple nods this year include Murray Bartlett (The Last of Us and Welcome to Chippendales), Alex Borstein (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Family Guy), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary and Saturday Night Live), Bill Hader (performance, directing and writing for Barry), Sharon Horgan (performance and writing for Bad Sisters), Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets and The Last of Us), Jason Sudeikis (performance and writing for Ted Lasso), and Ali Wong (BEEF and Tuca & Bertie).

The nominations may be revised in cases where names or titles are incorrect or appeals for changes are approved by the Television Academy’s Emmy Awards Committee. Producer nominees in certain program categories will be announced mid-August and may increase the number of multiple nominees. Final-round online voting begins Aug. 17.

The 75th Emmy Awards is scheduled to broadcast live coast-to-coast on FOX on Monday, Sept. 18, (8:00-11:00 p.m. ET/5:00-8:00 p.m. PT) from the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE. Emmy winners Jesse Collins and Dionne Harmon and Emmy nominee Jeannae Rouzan-Clay of Jesse Collins Entertainment will executive-produce the show.

The 2023 Creative Arts Emmy Awards are scheduled to take place at the Peacock Theater over two nights on Saturday, Sept. 9, and Sunday, Sept. 10. An edited presentation is planned to air on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on FXX.

Here’s a list of snubs and surprises, with a focus on music, talk and variety categories.

Snubs: Selena Gomez & Steve Martin

Gomez was passed over for a nod for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for the second year in a row for Only Murders in the Building. More surprisingly, her co-star Steve Martin was passed over for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series after being nominated last year. Martin Short was nominated in that category for the second year in a row. All three stars are nominated for outstanding comedy series as executive producers on the show for the second year. Gomez was also passed over for outstanding documentary or nonfiction special for Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me.
Surprise: Elton John

The legendary star received his first Primetime Emmy nomination – outstanding variety special (live) for Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium. If the show wins, the Rocket Man will become an EGOT. He has already won five Grammys, two Oscars and a Tony.

Fun Fact: Tim Rice, Elton’s collaborator on the Oscar-winning “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and other songs from The Lion King, became an EGOT in 2018.
Snubs: The Grammys & Two ‘Grammy Salutes’ specials

The Grammy Awards telecast, which was nominated for outstanding variety special (pre-recorded) in four of the last five years, failed to receive a nod in that category this year. And both of the Grammy Salutes specials that aired during the eligibility year – A Grammy Salute to The Beach Boys (CBS) and Homeward Bound: A Grammy Salute to the Songs of Paul Simon (CBS) – were passed over for outstanding variety special (pre-recorded). The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to The Beatles was a contender in the latter category nine years ago. Of course, The Beatles are in a class of their own.
Surprise: Biggie & 2Pac

One year after a celebration of hip-hop became the first Super Bowl Halftime Show to win a top program Emmy, programs about two late, legendary rappers are nominated in various categories. Dear Mama (FX), a program about Tupac Shakur and his mother Afeni, was nominated for outstanding documentary or non-fiction series. The Notorious B.I.G.: Sky’s The Limit: A VR Concert Experience was nominated for outstanding emerging media program.

Two other rap icons came up short in Emmy balloting. Kendrick Lamar Live from Paris: The Big Steppers Tour (Prime Video) was passed over for a nod for outstanding variety special (live); and Kid Cudi (Scott Mescudi) was passed over for a nod for outstanding character voiceover performance for Entergalactic (Netflix).
No Surprise: Dolly Parton

Parton’s latest TV movie, Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas, was nominated for outstanding television movie. Parton has been nominated in that category in four of the last seven years, winning two years ago for Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square. Everybody loves Dolly, even Emmy voters.
No Surprise: ‘Weird: The Al Yankovic Story’

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (The Roku Channel) was nominated for outstanding television movie. Yankovic is also nominated for outstanding original music and lyrics for “Now You Know,” which he wrote for that show. The nominations are just the latest sign of Yankovic’s success, which is unprecedented for a musical parody artist. He has won five Grammys and even had a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, Mandatory Fun.
Surprise: Lizzo

Lizzo, who won her first Primetime Emmy last year for Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, is nominated this year for outstanding variety special (pre-recorded) for Lizzo: Live in Concert (HBO Max). In addition to her Emmy last year (for outstanding competition program), Lizzo has won four Grammys.
Mixed Results: ‘The Voice’ & ‘American Idol’

The Voice is nominated for outstanding reality/competition show for the 12th consecutive year. That allows it to pull ahead of Dancing With the Stars (which has had 11 nods in the category) for the most nominations in this category by a music or dance program. American Idol is in third place, with nine nods. Idol was last nominated in that category in 2011. Unlike The Voice (which has won four times in the category), Idol has yet to win.
Snubs: Carson Daly & Ryan Seacrest

Both veteran broadcasters were passed over for outstanding reality-competition host. Daly has yet to be nominated in that category for hosting The Voice. Seacrest hasn’t been nominated for hosting American Idol since 2016 – and has yet to win in that category. The former two-term President could be headed for his second Primetime Emmy win. Obama is nominated for outstanding narrator for Working: What We Do All Day (Netflix). He won in the same category last year for another Netflix show, Our Great National Parks. Michelle Obama received her first Emmy nod as an executive producer of The Light We Carry: Michelle Obama & Oprah Winfrey (also Netflix). The show is nominated for outstanding hosted non-fiction series or special. Both Obamas are Grammy winners. He has two. She has one.
Double Snub: James Corden

The Late, Late Show With James Corden (CBS) was passed over for a nod for outstanding talk series for its final season, while the spinoff The Last, Last Late, Late Show Carpool Karaoke Special (also CBS) was passed over for outstanding variety special (pre-recorded). But Corden did manage a nod in a third, albeit lower-profile, category – outstanding short-form comedy, documentary or variety series for Carpool Karaoke: The Series.

The Late, Late Show With James Corden (CBS) was nominated for outstanding talk series four years in a row (2016-19), but never won in that category. But Carpool Karaoke specials won outstanding variety special (pre-recorded) three times in the same four-year span.
Snubs: Music Docs

Though Dear Mama, the program about 2Pac and his mother, was nominated this year, numerous other highly-regarded music docs were passed over in the two documentary categories. Passed over for nods for outstanding documentary or nonfiction series: Menudo: Forever Young (HBO); Surviving R. Kelly Part III: The Final Chapter (Lifetime); and Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever (Disney+). Passed over for nods for outstanding documentary or non-fiction special: If These Walls Could Sing (Disney+); Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me (Apple TV+); Love to Love You: Donna Summer (HBO); Love, Lizzo (HBO); The Sound of 007 (Prime Video); and Music Box: Jason Isbell: Running With Our Eyes Closed (HBO).

Another doc, Moonage Daydream (HBO), about David Bowie, was passed over for exceptional merit in documentary filmmaking.
No surprise: Jessica Chastain as Tammy Wynette

Sixteen months after winning her first Oscar for playing TV personality (and sometime singer) Tammy Faye Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Jessica Chastain is nominated for a Primetime Emmy for playing country legend Tammy Wynette in George & Tammy (Showtime). Chastain is nominated for outstanding lead actress in a limited or anthology series or TV movie.
No Surprise: Riley Keough

Riley Keough was nominated for outstanding lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie for Daisy Jones & the Six (Prime Video). The show is a buzzy hit, so her nomination was not a surprise. The surprise is that Keough is the first member of her storied family to receive a Primetime Emmy nod. Her mother, Lisa Marie Presley, and grandfather Elvis Presley, were never nominated.
Happy surprise: Julie Andrews & Carol Burnett

Sixty years after their first of three joint specials, Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall, won an Emmy as outstanding program achievement in the field of music, Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett each landed nods. Andrews is nominated for outstanding character voice-over performance for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (Netflix); Burnett is up for outstanding variety special (pre-recorded) for Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love (NBC). This gives Andrews a 65-year span of Emmy nominations. She was first nominated in 1958 for her lead role in Cinderella. As for Burnett, this is the seventh consecutive decade in which the TV icon has landed a Primetime Emmy nod. She has been nominated in every decade since the 1960s.
History-making surprise: Keke Palmer & Mayim Bialik

Two women are nominated for outstanding host for a game show in the same year for the first time. Palmer is nominated for hosting a revival of Password; Bialik is nominated for Jeopardy! Ken Jennings, who shares hosting duties with Bialik on the latter show, was also nominated in that category. These hosts are stepping into big shoes. Allen Ludden, the original host of Password, and Alex Trebek, the host most associated with Jeopardy!, are among the greatest hosts in TV history.

Billie Eilish Looks Just Like Barbie in ‘What Was I Made For’ Teaser

Billie meets Barbie! Billie Eilish is just a day away from unveiling her contribution to the Barbie film soundtrack, and on Wednesday (July 12), she gave a brief look into “What Was I Made For” and its accompanying music video.

In the 15-second teaser posted to Instagram, the 21-year-old superstar is seen dressed as the iconic doll, wearing a yellow dress with her hair up in a ponytail. She pulls a Barbie chest close to her, and opens it as she sings the lyrics, “I used to float,” over a piano melody.

“What Was I Made For” is slated for a July 13 release and features contributions from Eilish’s Grammy-winning older brother, FINNEAS. The duo previously won an Oscar for best original song in 2022 for co-writing the title song from the James Bond film No Time to Die.

Executive produced by Academy Award-winning songwriter and Grammy-winning producer Mark Ronson, the Barbie soundtrack is set to feature songs from some of contemporary pop’s biggest and brightest stars, such as Lizzo, Fifty Fifty, Kali, Gayle, Khalid, Haim and Ava Max. A slew of singles have already been released from the soundtrack, including two that have reached the Billboard Hot 100: Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” (No. 31) and Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice and AQUA’s “Barbie World” (No. 7).

Barbie hits theaters on July 21.

Kevin Gates Explains Why He Re-Released ‘The Luca Brasi Story’ Mixtape 10 Years Later: ‘It Was Before Its Time’

Kevin Gates made waves throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, the latter of which saw the release of 12 mixtapes and the birth of The Luca Brasi Story series. The rapper released the first installment in 2013, and gave it a 10th anniversary re-release in February to celebrate the work, he explains to Billboard News in a new interview.

Speaking with Tetris Kelly, Gates says that The Luca Brasi Story was a transcendent body of work that the industry wasn’t prepared for when it was originally released. “I’m immortal. For the people that don’t know what that means … when I put it out, it was before its time,” he asserts. “It was received well, but once I put it out again, it was re-received ’cause people like to discover Kevin Gates, and I’m still discovering Kevin Gates.”

The Luca Brasi Story continued with two other mixtapes — Luca Brasi 2 debuted at No. 38 on the Billboard 200 chart in 2014, while its follow up, Luca Brasi 3, peaked at No. 4 on the all-genre tally in 2018.

As for the state of mixtapes in rap, “I don’t feel like it’s making a comeback,” Gates says. “It’s me staying true to my roots, because when you say ‘mixtape,’ it takes the pressure of an album. When you say ‘album,’ that’s when the anxiety hits, like, ‘Oh my god, I have a fear of failure. Is it going to be received well?’ But when you say ‘mixtape,’ it’s like I’m going to give you the current events in between the album.”

In recent months, the Baton Rouge native has kept busy by releasing a string of singles including “Do It Again,” “Prada Me” and “Breakfast,” which charted at No. 45 the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs survey. “I love this version of myself,” Gates says of himself and what’s to come. “I’ve never been more in love with version of myself right now because I come from being so hard on myself.”
