Dove Cameron on Her Debut Album, ‘Boyfriend’ Success, Her Disney Days & More | Billboard News

Dove Cameron opened up to Billboard’s Rania Aniftos about creating her debut album Alchemical: Volume 1, life after the success of her song “Boyfriend,” being vulnerable in her writing and the lessons she learned from her Disney Channel days.

Dove Cameron:
It was just like I was learning as I went and everybody was watching every inch of it.

Hey, I’m Dove Cameron, and this is Billboard News.

Rania Aniftos:
Hi, everybody. It’s Rania Aniftos with Billboard News, and I am so excited to be here with singer-songwriter, Emmy Award winner Dove Cameron.

Dove Cameron:
Hey!

Rania Aniftos:
Hello!

Dove Cameron:
I’m so excited to be here with you.

Rania Aniftos:
Me too!

Dove Cameron:
It’s been a long time coming.

Rania Aniftos:
It has been a long time coming. We’ve both been manifesting this to happen.

So your debut album, Alchemical: Volume 1, so you’re splitting it into two parts. What was the idea behind telling a story in sequence like that?

Dove Cameron:
I felt like I was writing the two halves in such different headspaces. Like, the first half was really, like, about the ending of something and an entire year of my life and the processing of that that happened. And then there was, like, a very stark kind of sonic page turn when it came to the sort of, like, next musical phase that I stepped into. It just kind of ended up making sense to split it.

Rania Aniftos:
You’ve also been sprinkling singles throughout the past few years, and now you finally have a full project out. How does that feel to have like a complete body of work to share with your fans?

Ty Dolla $ign Drops Off Cover Art From His & Ye’s Upcoming Joint Album ‘Vultures’

Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign have unveiled the cover art to their upcoming album Vultures.

Posted on Ty’s Instagram page, the hazy cover finds a bird perched on a shovel atop a coffin in a grassy field. The album art comes after Ye and Dolla $ign previewed new music during Art Basel and performed at Miami’s LIV Nightclub. The newly formed tag team also unleashed the upcoming album’s tracklist, featuring their previously released song “Vultures” with Bump J and Lil Durk and the elusive song “New Body” with Nicki Minaj. “New Body” was slated to appear on West’s 2018 album Yandhi, but the album was shelved, and he pivoted to 2019’s Jesus Is King. It will also include “Everybody,” which sampled Backstreet Boys 1997 hit “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).”

After playing the album on Monday night (Dec. 11), West looks to have numerous features on display, including Future, Playboi Carti, Freddie Gibbs, Lil Baby, and North West, who was rapping alongside Ye during his listening party. The event was also starry as Offset, Lil Durk, and Freddie Gibbs were all in attendance as they watched Ye and Ty perform cuts from the project.

Check out Ye and Ty’s album cover for Vultures below. The album arrives Friday (Dec. 15).

Initially slated for a 2018 release on West’s shelved album Yandhi, the song features a stirring verse from Minaj and an earworm of a hook from Ty, which praises women seeking enhancements and plastic surgery. “Can’t wait to see your new body/ Don’t be actin’ like you don’t know nobody/ No body count on your new body/ I’ll be the first one to hit your new body, oh, whoa,” Dolla $ign sings on the hook.

As for Minaj’s verse, it remains unchanged despite the song leaking and being unofficially out for years. “Ayo, you ain’t f— me, you f—ed the old body/ You ain’t f— Nicki, you f—ed Nicole body/ Ain’t no miles on this here new body/ Off with they heads, these bi—es is nobodies,” she raps on her punchy verse.

Minaj is coming off the release of her fifth album, Pink Friday 2, which is vying for the top spot on the Billboard 200 next week. The project features Drake, Lil Wayne, Future, J. Cole and more. “New Body” would be the first collaboration for Minaj and West since Ye’s 2010 colossal record “Monster.” That year, the rap twosome also partnered on Minaj’s 2012 Pink Friday song “Blazin.”

Vultures is set to drop this Friday (Dec. 15) and will serve as the first joint project between Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign. Listen to a snippet of “New Body” below.

Strong activity on TikTok fuels the song’s rise in streaming: “La Víctima” has generated over 45,000 posts on the app to date, and rallies to the top 10 on Hot Latin Songs with 5.6 million official U.S. streams during the Dec. 1-7 tracking week, according to Luminate. The sum is enough to yield a No. 9 debut on Latin Streaming Songs, Xavi’s first entry and top 10 there.

“Honestly, I just can’t believe it,” 19-year-old Xavi tells Billboard. “Looking at the artists and songs that are in the top 10 makes me feel very honored and humbled. I’m also very grateful to the team and all the fans who have supported the song. I feel truly blessed.”

Hot Latin Songs combines streaming, sales data, and radio airplay into its rankings.

With “La Víctima,” released via Interscope Aug. 17, the Arizona-born teen scored his first entry on any Billboard chart, when it debuted at No. 46 on Hot Latin Songs during Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 25-dated list). A first collab with Dareyes De La Sierra followed, as “Poco a Poco” debuted at No. 46 on the multi-metric tally on the Dec. 9 ranking, peaking at No. 31 on the current ranking.

“La Víctima” also lands on global territory, with a No. 145 debut on the Billboard Global 200 chart, with 16 million global clicks, and a No. 175 start on Global Excl. U.S. with 10.4 million streams outside the U.S., Xavi’s first entry on both charts.

“It was inspired by a true story that happened to a good friend of mine,” Xavi tells of “La Víctima.” As he was telling it to me, I picked up my guitar and wrote it on the spot.”

The Mexican American, who represents the new wave of artists linking regional Mexican music with U.S. sounds, also adds two other songs on Hot Latin Songs this week: “La Diabla” at No. 30 and “Modo DND” at No. 38.

Kanye West Wears KKK-Style Hood at ‘Vultures’ Listening Party & Fans Are Shocked

Following the Art Basel Miami Beach festivities, Kanye West surprised fans at Wynwood Marketplace early Tuesday morning (Dec. 12) with an album listening party.

During the introduction to his forthcoming joint project with Ty Dolla $ign, titled Vultures, Ye appeared onstage wearing what appears to be a black Ku Klux Klan hood to perform the album’s title track with his 10-year-old daughter North West by his side.

“I ain’t antisemitic / I just f—ed a Jewish b—-,” West rapped during the song, adding to his controversial antisemitic statements from late 2022. Billboard reported in mid-October that Ye and Ty were shopping a joint project to distributors and that West would “make a decision soon.” The set would mark the first release for Ye since his antisemitic comments, which led to Def Jam parent company, Universal Music Group, distancing from the artist.

It’s hardly the first time Ye has promoted racist imagery in public. In October 2022, the rapper wore a long-sleeved shirt with “White Lives Matter” emblazoned on the back while debuting his Yeezy Season 9 collection during Paris Fashion Week.

Following Ye’s decision to wear the black hood onstage, fans took to Twitter to express confusion and frustration over the clothing choice, especially given that he is a Black man and that his daughter was standing next to him. See some of their reactions below.

Duff’s announcement came via Instagram, where the star posted a photo of the family Christmas card, which featured her and husband Matthew Koma with their children, 2-year-old daughter Mae, 4-year-old daughter Banks and 11-year-old Luca Comrie (whom she shares with ex-husband Mike Comrie).

The card reads: “So much for silent nights. Love the Duff, Bair, Comrie Crew.” (Koma’s real last name is Bair.) The back of the card highlights more adorable snaps of the kids, along with Duff’s pregnancy confirmation: “Buckle up Buttercups, we’re adding one more to this crazy bunch!”

Koma made a cheeky comment under his wife’s post, writing, “The stalker from jail gonna be so mad.” The Disney Channel alum’s celebrity friends shared their well-wishes, with her Cheaper by the Dozen co-star Alyson Stoner writing, “Just 8 more to complete the pack!,” to which Duff replied, “ha well played.”

Jenna Dewan added, “Ahh congrats !!!” and Mandy Moore wrote, “Love this. What a cute card!!”

Duff’s family expansion doesn’t come as too much of a surprise: In a November interview with Shape, she called parenting “f—ing hard” but “endlessly rewarding.” The star noted that she’s “in my family-making phase. I built this and I wanted this and so I have to be here to enjoy the joyful and the painful and everything in between.”

Maluma & Carin León’s ‘Según Quien’ Hits No. 1 on Latin Airplay & Regional Mexican Airplay Charts

Maluma and Carin León combine forces for a new No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart as “Según Quien” advances 3-1 to lead the Dec. 16-dated list. The move gives the Colombian artist his 24th champ, while León captures his second.

“Según Quien” crowns the all-genre airplay chart with a 50% gain in audience impressions, to 13.2 million, earned in the U.S. in the week ending Dec. 7, according to Luminate. The song is one of 24 tracks from Maluma’s Grammy-nominated Don Juan album, which debuted at No. 11 on Top Latin Albums last September.

In addition to its first week at No. 1 on Latin Airplay, “Quien” also lands at the summit on Regional Mexican Airplay (rising 11-1) for its first week in charge, and gives León his fifth leader there. He previously reached No. 1 with the three-week champ “Indispensable,” his first ruler with no accompanying acts, last August. Maluma claims his second, after “Cada Quien” in 2022.

Notably, as the Maluma-León partnership takes over both tallies, Maluma becomes the first urban artist to lead the rankings simultaneously since Latin Airplay and Regional Mexican Airplay launched in 1994. Only two other urban artists have reached the penthouse on Regional Mexican Airplay: Cazzu and Santa Fe Klan, through their equally billed collab “Tú y Tú,” with Los Ángeles Azules, in May; the song peaked at No. 5 on Latin Airplay during the same period.

Further, “Según Quien” becomes the fifth champ by two co-billed male soloists on Latin Airplay out of the 33 No. 1s in 2023. Let’s review those winners:

Artists, Title, Peak Date, Weeks at No. 1

  • Marshmello & Manuel Turizo, “El Merengue,” June 10, one
  • Yng Lvcas & Peso Pluma, “La Bebe,” July 15, one
  • Feid & Sean Paul, “Niña Bonita,” Aug. 19, one
  • Ozuna & Amarion, “Tucu,” Sept. 9, one
  • Maluma & Carin León, “Según Quien,” Dec. 19
