Watch Paula Abdul Lose It Over a ‘Celebrity Wheel of Fortune’ Puzzle

Paula Abdul straight up gets stumped by a puzzle on the Wednesday (Dec. 13) episode of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, and Billboard has an exclusive look at the moment.

“It’s the last word and I’m having …” the singer-dancer declares, frustrated as she attempts to figure out the last word in the “Before and After” phrase.

“If you don’t know the last word, they why would you try to solve it?” host Pat Sajak wonders.

“I’d rather spin!” the Grammy winner concedes as fellow contestant Matt Rogers cheers her on.

After barely missing the “Bankrupt” spot on the wheel, Abdul selects a consonant, but it didn’t help her much. After mouthing some words to herself, she begins her guess. “The good … the bad and the ugly …” As she trails off, Abdul suddenly lets out an agonized, frustrated scream that’ll leave views hearts cold. “Aaaaauuuuggggggghhhhhh!!!!”

“Uhhh … that is incorrect!” quips Sajak.

The special holiday-themed episode also features comedian Lil Rel Howery competing against the singer and the actor. But rather than playing for cash and prizes for themselves, the stars are instead playing to benefit charities. Abdul is playing for WigsAndWishes.org, which works with salons to give women who are battling cancer wigs, and also grants wishes to children fighting cancer. Rogers is competing to benefit Story Pirates Changemakers, which brings kids’ stories and ideas to life through collaborations with comedians and musicians. Howery is playing for the MAAFA Redemption Project — started by his cousin — which works with young Black and Brown men in the Chicago area to provide job training, spiritual and character development and more to help them become leaders in their communities.

Watch Billboard‘s exclusive clip of Abdul’s attempt to solve a holiday-themed Celebrity Wheel of Fortune puzzle above, and tune in when the show airs Dec. 13 at 9 p.m. on ABC. (Episodes are available on demand on Hulu the day after they air.)

Animal Shelters Call on Swifties to Donate $13 to Celebrate Taylor Swift’s Birthday

Tis the season of giving, and animal shelters are calling on Taylor Swift fans to give back on the superstar’s 34th birthday.

Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) explained their now-viral #TaylorSwiftChallenge best via Instagram on Wednesday (Dec. 13), posting a photo of Swift with her rescue cat Benjamin Button and calling on fans to donate $13 to a shelter of their choice in her name. “To honor Taylor and to help animal shelters everywhere who have had a particularly hard year we created this challenge to support not only our lifesaving mission, but efforts across the country,” the caption reads. “We have been thrilled to see it catch on with rescues and shelters from North Carolina to Texas, Missouri to Massachusetts and Kansas City to Oklahoma participating. We’re not on our own, kid.”

The post continued, “It is no secret that adoptions are low, owner surrenders are high, and at the Pennsylvania SPCA our Animal Law Enforcement team has had a record breaking year. Will you be the 1 for animals in need and donate today?”

Travis Kelce & Jason Kelce Credit Taylor Swift for Their Jersey Sales Soaring in the United Kingdom

Travis Kelce isn’t the only one whose jersey sales have soared amid his romance with Taylor Swift — his brother Jason, who plays center for the Philadelphia Eagles, has recently seen a bump too … in the United Kingdom, where soccer is largely popular.

Jason shed light on both his and Travis’ jerseys being the top two selling jerseys in the U.K. on the Wednesday (Dec. 13) installment of their joint New Heights podcast.

“We are the No. 1 and No. 2 top jersey in the United Kingdom,” Jason told his younger brother. “Trav, you got the No. 1 jersey — good to know we’re still No. 1 at something these days — followed by me at No. 2. This is crazy — it’s Travis, then me, then Pat Mahomes and Jalen Hurts.”

Travis agreed, saying that their latest jersey boost “doesn’t make any sense. Either way, I’ll take it.” When Jason inquired if there were a lot of Swifties residing in the U.K., the Kansas City Chiefs tight end replied, “Gotta be, only reasonable solution because of all of this.”

While Travis’ jersey boost comes amid his romance with Swift, Jason joked that his heightened jersey sales likely comes from people mixing him and his brother up. “They’re all Kylie Kelce fans, so they’re supporting [Jason’s wife] Kylie [Kelce],” he joked, before giving her and Swift credit. “Shoutout to Kylie, shoutout to Taylor. Thank you, guys.”

This isn’t the first time Travis has experienced a large boost in his jersey sales. When Swift attended Kansas City Chiefs’ Sept. 24 game, it was reported that his jersey saw a 400% increase in sales.

“Yesterday, Travis Kelce was one of the top five selling NFL players and saw a nearly 400% spike in sales throughout the Fanatics network of sites, including NFLShop.com,” a spokesperson for the NFL’s official e-commerce partner, Fanatics, said in a statement obtained by CNN.

‘The Voice’ Reveals Season 24’s Top 5 Contestants

The Voice has whittled down the competition to its last five contestants of season 24 during its Tuesday night (Dec. 12) episode.

Lila Forde (Team Legend), Huntley (Team Niall), Ruby Leigh (Team Reba), Mara Justine (Team Niall) and
Jacquie Roar (Team Reba) will be continuing in the competition, the show revealed Tuesday. Monday night’s semifinals episode saw the then-nine remaining hopefuls performing individual solo tracks and doing a second group performance for covers of three Taylor Swift songs: “Don’t Blame Me,” “Mean (Taylor’s Version)” and “Exile (feat. Bon Iver).”

Forde took the stage Monday to perform a serene, piano-driven rendition of “River” by Joni Mitchell, Leigh put an upbeat, country twang on John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Road,” Justine delivered a soulful rendition of “Parachute” by Chris Stapleton and Huntley enlisted the help of a small choir for a rollicking take on KALEO’s “Way Down Below” to secure their spots in the competition.

The fifth and final spot was determined by a series of last-chance performances Tuesday, with Roar clinching her spot in the top five after singing several soaring high notes in her cover of “Alone” by Heart as her last-chance performance.

The Voice‘s season 24 finale is set to air on NBC Dec. 19 at 9 p.m. ET, during which this season’s champion will be crowned. In addition to performances from coaches Niall Horan, John Legend, Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani, who will all join forces for the holiday classic “Let It Snow,” several Billboard chart-toppers including Jelly Roll, Tyla, Earth, Wind & Fire, AJR, Keith Urban and season 25 coaches Dan + Shay will take the stage for the televised event.

Taylor Swift Grossed Almost $2B This Year From Her Music, Movie, Touring and Concert Merchandise

Most corporations would love to rake in revenues well over $1 billion in a single year. In 2023, Taylor Swift has done it — and plenty more — by herself.

Billboard estimates that the 2023 Time Person of the Year honoree has grossed approximately $1.82 billion in music sales and royalties, concert tickets, merchandise sales at concerts and movie ticket sales in 2023 through Dec. 7.

See latest videos, charts and news

That figure represents the total amount generated in these handful of segments of Swift’s business career, not the amount she personally pocketed. Because none of this financial information is publicly available, Billboard calculated music royalties based on data from Luminate, concert ticket sales using publicly available information and her concert merchandise revenue was estimated based on Billboard’s reporting.

While impressive, $1.82 billion isn’t even the entirety of the income Swift has derived from her music career. Billboard left many items out of the calculations due to the inaccessibility of data, including synchronization royalties for her music’s use in advertisements, films and television shows, sponsorships, and merchandise sales from her website and licensing deals.

To put Swift’s year in perspective, she took in more than the $1.4 billion global gross of the motion picture Barbie. She exceeded the $1.6 billion fetched last year by the auction of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s art collection of works by the likes of Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat and Gustav Klimt. And it’s almost four times the 2022 annual revenue of Deezer, a publicly traded music streaming company with 9.4 million subscribers. In fact, she grossed more than every record label besides the three majors.

Spending on tickets and concert merchandise accounted for the lion’s share of Swift’s business this year. Swift’s The Eras Tour generated approximately $900 million in ticket sales in 2023. That figure is based on Billboard’s estimate that Swift sold 3.3 million tickets to 53 concerts in the U.S. at about $250 per ticket. An additional 13 shows in Latin America likely earned another $60 million to $75 million from 750,000 ticket. At those concerts, Swift sold an estimated concert merchandise sales of $132 million of merchandise. Her per-show average merchandise sales at roughly $2 million, based on Billboard’s reporting.

Swift’s music grossed an estimated $536 million from streaming royalties, purchases — tracks, digital albums, CDs, LPs and cassettes — and broadcast radio play through Dec. 7. Swift is this year’s leading U.S. artist in terms of on-demand audio streams, album sales and track sales.

Sales and streams accounted for roughly 86%, or $461 million, of her recorded music revenue. Most of that money was collected by her label, Republic Records, and the owner of her Big Machine Music Group catalog, Shamrock Capital. These amounts include the gross amount from music purchases (CDs, LPs and downloads) and includes mechanical royalties paid by record labels to songwriters and music publishers.

Swift’s songwriting catalog generated an estimated $75 million from streaming and radio play. (Publishing royalties from streaming are not counted in the recorded music gross revenue. Unlike the mechanical royalties from purchases, mechanical royalties from streams are not passed through record labels.) The radio royalties are paid to Swift’s performance rights organization, BMI, and will be distributed to Swift, her co-writers and the various music publishers and administrators that have rights to the compositions.

Additionally, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour movie has an international gross of $250 million, according to Box Office Mojo. In the U.S., the movie grossed $179 million and debuted at No. 1 with first-week ticket sales of $95 million to $97 million. Depending on the production costs, the movie could be a financial boon for Swift considering she circumvented the traditional Hollywood distribution system and made a deal directly with AMC, the country’s largest movie theater chain. Additionally, the film is now available to rent on streaming and Swift retains the rights to license to a streaming service — both of which will earn her even more money.

Swift’s true economic impact is far larger than her gross sales outlined here. Many experts have been thinking of Swift’s business as the center of a larger economic impact that expands like concentric circles around her fans’ insatiable demand and willingness to travel to experience her concerts. The U.S. Travel Association stated in September that it believed The Eras Tour’s total economic impact will exceed $10 billion. Swift’s tour reached 20 U.S. cities and her fans averaged $1,300 of spending on travel, hotel stays and food. The association figures Swift’s fans spent about $5 billion in those destinations. Including indirect spending by others “who came to join the action around the events but did not actually attend the shows,” the association estimates the total economic impact is twice the $5 billion of direct spending. Another estimated found that her six sold-out shows at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, alone brought an estimated $320 million to the Los Angeles area’s gross domestic product, according to the California Center for Jobs & The Economy and California Business Roundtable.

Kate McKinnon’s ‘SNL’ Christmas Wish Is Granted in New Promo

For Kate McKinnon, it’s a Christmas miracle to be hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend.

The comedian and SNL veteran appears in a new promo released on Wednesday (Dec. 13), standing in front of the iconic Christmas tree in New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza. “I know you’re probably feeling a lot of Christmas wishes right now, but I’d like to add one myself if that’s OK,” she asks the lit-up tree. “I’d really love to host SNL this week with musical guest Billie Eilish. I know! I know it’s a big ask.”

While expressing how much she misses performing at the iconic sketch comedy show, cast member Kenan Thompson opens the door to 30 Rock, where SNL is filmed. “We’re waiting for you so we can start rehearsing,” he tells a confused McKinnon, before clarifying, “For the show that you’re hosting this week.”

Beyoncé Drops ‘Grown Woman’ on Streaming to Celebrate 10 Years of Her Self-Titled Album

It’s a big day for Beyoncé and the Beyhive. On Wednesday (Dec. 13), Queen Bey commemorated 10 years of her self-titled surprise visual album, and she’s treating fans to some new music — kind of — to celebrate.

When Beyoncé arrived on iTunes with no pre-release announcement or promotion in the wee hours of Dec. 13, 2013, the 14-track record came complete with 17 music videos. While certain songs on the album — namely “Partition” and “Haunted” — got two music videos to honor their long-winding structures, there was a bonus music video that did not accompany an audio track.

For a decade, Beyoncé fans have only been able to stream “Grown Woman” as a music video. On YouTube — where the clip was uploaded to honor the album’s one-year anniversary and the release of its platinum edition — the Jake Nava-helmed video has amassed over 145 million views. Before that, however, Beyoncé first teased a lengthy snippet of “Grown Woman” in a career-reflecting Pepsi ad that debuted just a few months after she rocked the Super Bowl Halftime Show stage in 2013.

Now, fans can enjoy the track as they would any other Beyoncé song. The Afrobeats-tinged single finally arrived on streaming platforms on Dec. 13, marking the second gift from Queen Bey following an Instagram video montage acknowledging the album’s anniversary.

“Grown Woman” is co-written by Beyoncé, The-Dream, Timbaland, Kelly Sheehan, Garland Mosley, Chris Godbey and Darryl Pearson, with production contributions from Timbaland and J-Roc.

Despite dropping in the middle of the tracking week, Beyoncé debuted atop the Billboard 200 with just three days of sales, becoming the fastest selling album in iTunes history at the time. The three-time Grammy-winning LP housed the Billboard Hot 100 No. 2 hit “Drunk in Love” (with Jay-Z), as well as “7/11” (No. 13), “Partition” (No. 23) and “Flawless” (No. 41).

Happy birthday, Taylor Swift! The pop superstar turned 34 years old on Wednesday (Dec. 13).

To celebrate, the 12-time Grammy winner’s The Eras Tour film made its way to streaming services, and took to Instagram to poke fun at her “millennial” habits. Swift shared a video of herself performing the Speak Now fan favorite “Long Live” on her iconic blue koi fish guitar during a stop on Eras trek this year. “I had the time of my life fighting dragons with youuuu,” the pop star captioned her post, referencing her own “Long Live” lyrics. “Celebrate 34 with me by watching The Eras Tour (Extended Version) including ‘Long Live’ ? ‘The Archer’ ? and ‘Wildest Dreams’ ? at home!”

“PS troll me all you want about my excessive and literal millennial emoji use,” she added. “But A) no one’s prouder to be a millennial and B) it’s my bday and today I am exempt! ?”

Billboard has more than 200 different weekly charts, encompassing numerous genres and formats.

Here’s a look at five artists who appear on surveys for the first time on the Dec. 16-dated charts:

The Bites

The Los Angeles-based rock group scores its first Billboard chart entry with its single “Knockin on the Door.” The track, released in April on Earache Records, debuts at No. 40 on Mainstream Rock Airplay (up 8% in plays, according to Luminate).

The song, which takes influence from 1970s and ‘80s rock ‘n’ roll groups (Van Halen, Guns N Roses, Def Leppard), appears on the act’s debut studio album Squeeze, released Dec. 1. The group comprises Jordan Tyler (vocals), Dustin Coon (guitar), Jono Richer (guitar), Zack Currier (bass) and Mark Hylander (drums/production).

Whitney Wren

The singer-songwriter arrives on Billboard’s charts with “Whiskey Over Wine.” The song, released Dec. 1 on Josh Bright Productions, debuts at No. 11 on Country Digital Song Sales with 2,000 downloads sold in its opening week. It also sparks her debut at No. 29 on the Emerging Artists chart.

While “Whiskey Over Wine” is Wren’s first solo release, the Florida native has already forged a successful career outside of music. She’s an online content creator and co-hosts the C&Whit Podcast with Christen Whitman. She’s particularly active on TikTok, where she boasts over 2 million followers.

TML Vibez

The Nigerian artist reaches Billboard’s charts for the first time with “Goated,” featuring Seyi Vibez. The track debuts at No. 33 on the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart. It’s from TML Vibez’s five-track EP Timileyin, released Dec. 1 via Vibez Inc/Dapper Music & Ent.

TML Vibez is a newcomer to not just Billboard’s charts but music as a whole. Outside of the new EP, he’s released one additional song, “Grateful Sinner,” in March.

Nasboi

The singer, from Nigeria, earns his first Billboard chart appearance with “Umbrella,” featuring Wande Coal. The song, released, Nov. 24 on ETRSL/Explo Music, debuts at No. 37 on Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs.

TikTok has been a central factor in the song’s growing profile, as the track has soundtracked over 300,000 clips on the platform to date. On Instagram Reels, the song has been used in over 80,000 clips.

Beyond “Umbrella,” Nasboi has released one other song: “Lover Boy,” in February.

Rosaly Rubio

The singer-songwriter, from the Dominican Republic, achieves her first Billboard chart hit, thanks to “Culpa Mia,” with Chimbala, The collaboration, released Nov. 8 via Vulcano Music Entertainment, debuts at No. 3 on Latin Digital Song Sales. Rosaly Rubio has released over two dozen songs, all since 2019.

As for Chimbala, the fellow Dominican artist lands his third entry on Latin Digital Song Sales, after 2021’s “Loco,” with Justin Quiles and Zion & Lennox, and 2022’s “!Wow BB!,” with Natti Natasha and El Alfa.
