Big Sean Responds to Alleged Album Leak by Teasing The Alchemist Collab: ‘I’ma Just Start Droppin’

Big Sean is the latest subject of a leak after someone allegedly released a 14-track body of work that’s said to be a version of the Detroit rapper’s upcoming album. Sean Don didn’t waste any time in responding to the leak, getting on the offensive as he teased an upcoming collaboration with The Alchemist on Wednesday (July 17).

“I’m a just start droppin this new music before they leak it all BIG SEAN x THE ALCHEMIST soon,” he captioned an Instagram post.

The accompanying clip finds Sean rhyming over Alchemist’s soulful production, and they appear to have a visual ready to go with the rapper and producer kicking it in the grass fields.

“Pushin the V and it’s not for vendetta/ I’m hungry as ever but somehow I’m fed up/ A smooth operator I could connect ya/ I only love a few I gotta protect ya,” he raps.

Big Sean caused a stir on social media with subliminal bars from his “On the Radar Freestyle” on Wednesday, which some believed to be shots at Kendrick Lamar, while others such as DJ Hed insinuated he was sniping at Ye (formerly known as Kanye West).

“I talked to Sean. The bar was ‘I got better things to do then find someone to beef with’ And it was not for Dot,” Hed tweeted. “Bar was directed at a different Gemini.” (Ye’s June 8 birthday makes him a Gemini.)

Big Sean had been signed to Ye’s G.O.O.D. Music label for 14 years before announcing his departure in October 2021. The move came just prior to when West called signing Sean “the worst thing I’ve ever done” during a Drink Champs interview in November 2021.

A person online going by the handle Bigseandon811 didn’t appear to appreciate what they perceived to be disrespect of Ye in the freestyle, and took it upon themself to allegedly leak the album. Billboard has reached out to reps for Big Sean.

“Since he wanna disrespect Ye so much, here’s the album, f–k him and his whole team,” the leaker wrote, according to Variety.

Variety also found the leaked files, and reported that a track titled “Nintendo Switch Superstar” features the same Willie Hutch sample that Usher used on “Superstar.” Other guest appearances reportedly include Charlie Wilson and Brent Faiyaz.

Big Sean notched three consecutive No. 1 albums atop the Billboard 200 with 2020’s Detroit 2 serving as the last LP. He made his return earlier this year with “Precision,” and appeared as a guest on tracks with Eminem and Jessie Reyez.

The 36-year-old will be able to call himself an author come October when his Go Higher book promoting mental wellness arrives. As far as his untitled upcoming album, the project remains without a firm release date, but might be bumped up due to the recent leaks.

Halsey Confirms She Got Britney Spears’ ‘Blessing’ Before Sampling ‘Lucky’

In setting out to sample Britney Spears‘ “Lucky” in a new song, Halsey had some good fortune of her own when it came to getting the elder pop star’s approval.

According to the “Closer” singer, Spears was fully on board with her 2000 hit being repurposed and interpolated in Halsey’s upcoming track of the same name. “yes of course!” they wrote on X Thursday (July 18) when asked by a fan whether the “Toxic” musician had been involved.

Halsey added, “I wouldn’t even dream of doing it without her blessing!”

Trending on Billboard

The revelation comes one day after the MaXXXine star announced that “Lucky,” the first official single off her upcoming album, will arrive July 26. They also shared a sneak peek at the track, as well as posted its pink Y2K-inspired cover art.

“When I was 5, it always felt like Britney was singing directly to me,” Halsey wrote on Instagram earlier this month. “24 years later, these words hit different. love you forever.”

The “Without Me” artist also answered several other fan questions on X Thursday, including queries about the inspiration behind her new music. “I wrote a lot about what I was going through,” Halsey said. “I felt like I couldn’t tell anyone, though it was mostly my choice to not. but the weight of it all and looking at my life wondering if I was happy with who I was. While simultaneously changing against my will.”

In June, the musician dropped “The End,” a pre-cursor to their next era. The raw lyrics found Halsey singing about her recent diagnoses with Lupus and a rare T-cell disorder.

“I tried to take a break for some privacy. And then I got sick,” Halsey reflected in another tweet. “And the break lasted 2 years longer than I had wanted/intended. and I was just desperate to do the thing I love again. It’s different now. But I still love it and I have so much gratitude.”

The three-time Grammy nominee also seemed to hint that she plans on hitting the road after the album’s release while addressing a fan who asked, “is a tour realistic for this era?”

“I’m ⭐️running⭐️ to the stage,” they replied.

Here Are Charli XCX’s Billboard Covers & Photos Over the Past Decade

Charli XCX is Billboard’s latest cover star — but she’s no stranger to gracing our magazine.

The “360” star has been on the cover two other times, in 2014 and 2017. She’s also been part of several photoshoots related to Billboard’s annual Women in Music event. In 2014, she accepted the Hitmaker Award and, in 2023, she took home the Powerhouse Award.

Her most recent cover story comes a little more than a month after the “Von Dutch” singer dropped her critically acclaimed album Brat, which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 — her highest peak on the chart to date — as well as inspired a wave of new internet trends.

“I didn’t want any metaphors — like, at all,” Charli tells Billboard of the project. “I wanted this record to feel like I was having a conversation with the listener in a true way. I could say that to you in the back of a cab on the way to a club. Like tonight? I want to dance with A. G.”

She added, “With Brat, it was really interesting to just do things for the fan base and make that feel exclusive — but then once you’re in the club, it’s actually very inclusive. Actually, everyone can join the club. It’s just that everybody joins at slightly different times in slightly different ways — whether that be on my private Instagram posts, or the 400-person Boiler Room, or a random cinema screening of a new music video in L.A., or a text message from me.”

Skrillex was there camping out for the weekend ahead of his mighty festival closing performance; Rüfüs du Sol turned up for an unannounced golden hour DJ set on the shore of the man-made lake the festival is situated around. There was yoga. There were so many breathwork classes. There was a rollerskating rink and shots of pickle juice available at a bar designed like a western saloon.

And of course more than anything, there was music. The 2024 lineup was arguably one of the festival’s strongest in its 21 year history, with the aforementioned Skrillex headlining set (“Lightning In a Bottle, thank you for the experience, I’ve always wanted to do this” the producer announced as he closed the show) happening amid a lineup that also featured James Blake, M.I.A., Nia Archives, Of The Trees, Aluna, CloZee Fatboy Slim, Honey Dijon, IsoXo and many other electronic luminaries, along with a stacked undercard.

Trending on Billboard

This year, the event also featured two new stages, Lighthouse and Crossroads, with the latter focused largely on afrobeats and serving as a packed late (like 4 a.m. late) night hub and a welcome addition to the sonic landscape. Here and on other stages, music went until the early hours nightly, with daytime programming focused on workshops (with topics including things like “pluriversal AI for equitable futures,” “the galactic akashic records,” and “rites of the rose ritual”), along with sound baths, meditation and general recuperation from the night before.

Drafting off the success of this year’s event, Lightning In a Bottle’s producers The Do Lab have noted that the presale for the 2025 event is their biggest of all time, with these early tickets already sold out.

So, let us revisit the immaculate vibes of the weekend with these three exclusive sets from the festival from Aqutie, Jubilee and Shermanology.

Aqutie

The New York City-based producer played two solo sets during the festival, once in the Crossroads tent on Sunday night and another on the Thunder stage Saturday afternoon. Heard here, this latter set leans heavy into afrohouse, classics like Groove Armada’s “Love Sweet Sound” and Masters at Work’s “Work,” the Adam Port remix of Dua Lipa’s “Houdini” and material from the producer’s recently released Coolest In The City EP, recently released via Aluna’s Noir Fever label. (Aqutie also made an appearance during Aluna’s set on the festival’s biggest stage, Lightning.) “I had such a beautiful time omg,” she wrote on Instagram after the fest. “Words can’t describe how much fun I had. I can’t wait to do it again.”

Jubilee

The NYC legend wasted no time during her Sunday afternoon set on the Thunder stage, launching the performance with punchy, sharp-edged sounds that evolved into tough, sexy, experimental, occasionally acid-soaked terrain that incorporated tracks from producers including Dance System, Oceantide and Zion Train. “It’s hot as f–k, so everybody that made it out, thank you very much,” the artist announced at the end of her set, with a statement that referred to the weather, but could have also easily described the 90 minutes she’d just played.

Shermanology

Longstanding Dutch brother/sister duo Shermanology played a Sunday afternoon set perfectly suited to ass-shaking in the afternoon sunshine. Happening at the festival’s Woogie stage — which this year featured a new design that was debuted when the Woogie served as the Do Lab’s stage at Coachella 2024 — the high-energy performance had loads of singalong moments (including their deeply funky Fisher collab “It’s a Killa” and their totally undeniable 2021 track “Boyz N Da Club”) and was just plain fun, cool, feel-good music — the essence of the Woogie’s legendary daytime vibe.

ScHoolboy Q Believes Kendrick Lamar & Drake Beef Led to Cancellation of His Toronto Show

ScHoolboy Q voiced his displeasure about the first show of his Blue Lips Weekend tour getting canceled, and he thinks the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef has something to do with it.

The tour was set to kick off Thursday (July 18) with a sold-out show at History in Toronto, Canada, but Wednesday night, the TDE rapper alleged that the show was scrapped due to safety concerns. “They just cancelled my show in Toronto,” he tweeted Wednesday. “Canadian police don’t want nobody from TDE performing.”

Trending on Billboard

Q also mentioned Kendrick’s camp has been keeping things on wax while alluding Drake — who is from Toronto — and OVO had something to do with the situation. He pointed out his label boss Top Dawg met up with Lil Wayne and Baby at the YouTube Leaders & Legends Gala, and that OVO artist Partynextdoor had just performed at the Hollywood Palladium. “TOP was just wit Wayne & Baby smH,” he tweeted. “Partynextdoor just had a show at the palladium. If we wanted to get y’all we would’ve just did it.. now when somebody gets hurt don’t cry.”

He quickly got over it, though, and laughed at the irony and ridiculousness of it all. “Actually I get it,” he tweeted. “Nevermind, this s—t is lowkey hilarious. I don’t know why Dot put me in that f—ing video.”

One fan replied to that tweet with a screenshot of ScHoolboy standing stoically in the “Not Like Us” video, to which the rapper poked fun at himself, tweeting, “Cancelled is all I could think about.”

History — the venue ScHoolboy was set to perform in — is owned by Live Nation in collaboration with Drake.

Billboard has reached out to Drake, History as well as Toronto law enforcement for comment.

Rick Ross was attacked after a show June 30 in Vancouver, B.C., as he walked off the stage with “Not Like Us” playing in the background. Back in 2018, Pusha T was also attacked while he was performing in Toronto.

Major rainfall and flooding have hit Toronto hard in recent days, leaving 100,000 residents without power. Drake posted a video of himself trying to control the flooding in his mansion to no avail.

Q’s next tour stop is in Chicago this Saturday (July 20).

Kim Gordon Says She’s ‘Not Really a Fan’ of Taylor Swift, But She Does Like Billie Eilish

Kim Gordon just made one of the most divisive, incendiary statements one can make in 2024: she doesn’t like Taylor Swift.

In an interview with The Guardian published Wednesday (July 17), the musician revealed that — in spite of the “Karma” singer being at a popularity apex thanks to the Eras Tour’s prowess and The Tortured Poets Department‘s 12-week reign atop the Billboard 200 — she part of what appears to be an increasingly smaller group of people who don’t identify as Swifties.

“I don’t know if it’s controversial but I’m not really a fan of Taylor Swift,” she told the publication when asked for her most polarizing pop culture opinion. “I couldn’t tell you what her music sounded like, actually.”

Gordon did, however, offer up another musician she can get behind. “When it comes to pop icons, I would choose Billie Eilish,” she said.

Trending on Billboard

The interview comes just a day ahead of the former Sonic Youth band member’s July 18 and 19 performances at the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ Volume festival. Her remarks about Swift follow harsher criticism from stars like Dave Grohl and Courteney Love; at a recent Foo Fighters concert, the rocker implied that the pop star doesn’t perform live, while the Hole frontwoman told The Standard in April that Swift “is not important … she’s not interesting as an artist.”

In both cases, Swifties united to defend the “Fortnight” musician’s name online.

As for musical icons of the past, Gordon has a couple that she looked up to. “As a teenager, I listened to Billie Holiday and Joni Mitchell but I never actually thought it was possible to become a musician,” she told the publication. “There are certainly artists, but not necessarily female artists, who I was influenced by – artists like Lucio Fontana or Yves Klein, even Andy Warhol.”

Megan Thee Stallion Launches Emergency Power Program for Senior Citizens

A philanthropic Hottie!

Megan Thee Stallion is giving back by announcing on Thursday (July 18) that her Pete and Thomas Foundation partnered with Bread Of Life, Inc. to launch the Emergency Power Program. The program aims to ensure that senior citizens in Houston, Texas — Meg’s hometown — have access to power during natural disasters. The initiative comes after Hurricane Beryl blew through the city, leaving at least 18 people dead and two million people without power.

”It’s been painful to watch the elderly population in Houston suffer without electricity during these devastating storms,” the rapper said in a statement via the program’s Instagram announcement. “That’s why we wanted to partner with Bread Of Life to take a strategic approach to this problem and secure generators to help protect our senior citizens. We need to do our part to provide our elders with the best resources possible to withstand future emergencies.”

Meg has a longtime passion for helping others, and got her health administration degree in December 2021. Though Megan started to achieve acclaim for her rap talents while attending classes on campus, she revealed that she wanted to continue her studies to honor Holly Thomas, her mother who died in March 2019 after battling brain cancer. “I want to get my degree because I really want my mom to be proud,” she told People. “She saw me going to school before she passed.”

She added that seeing her grandmother’s devotion to education inspired her as well. “My grandmother that’s still alive used to be a teacher, so she’s on my butt about finishing school,” the rapper added. “I’m doing it for me, but I’m also doing it for the women in my family who made me who I am today.”

Jelly Roll Releases New Song ‘Dead End Road’ From ‘Twisters’ Soundtrack

Over the past few years, through songs such as “Son of a Sinner,” “Need a Favor” and his latest “I Am Not Okay,” Jelly Roll has served as a chronicler and salvo for many who have faced a number of afflictions, be it depression, addiction, anxiety, broken hearts or shattered dreams. His latest, the hard-charging “Dead End Road,” serves as the most recent release from the 29-track Twisters: The Album soundtrack.

“I’m just a blood-stained, folded hands/ Throwin’ back the milligrams,” he sings in “Dead End Road,” acknowledging the incessant tug to live life on the edge, regardless of the consequences. Jelly Roll (real name Jason DeFord) wrote “Dead End Road” with Jaxson Free, Taylor Phillips and Brock Berryhill.

Jelly Roll’s newly released contribution to the Twisters: The Album soundtrack follows a steady slate of songs from the country-music-packed soundtrack. Luke Combs launched it earlier this year with the song “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma,” while artists including Bailey Zimmerman, Miranda Lambert, Conner Smith and Megan Moroney are also featured on the set.

Twisters, which releases July 19, connects to the ’90s hit movie and centers on a retired tornado chaser/meteorologist who returns to following tornadoes across Oklahoma. The film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos.

The release of Jelly Roll’s song just before the movie’s release is appropriate, given that the Tennessee native’s ascendance to a top-tier act shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. He’s notched four No. 1 Billboard Country Airplay hits, and he’s expanded his 2024 headlining Beautifully Broken Tour, which runs through November and features an array of openers, including Warren Zeiders, Billboard Hot 100-topping artist Shaboozey, Ernest, Alexandra Kay and Allie Colleen. Earlier this year, Jelly Roll also celebrated a Grammy nomination for best new artist, as well as a Grammy nod for best country duo/group performance for “Save Me” with Lainey Wilson.

‘Less Waste, More Music’: A Sustainable Vision for the Japanese Music Industry Advanced by BE:FIRST’s Agency BMSG

On Feb. 13, 2024, BMSG, Inc. made waves in the Japanese music industry with their statement, “BMSG’s Recommendations for Pulling the Music Industry Back from the Brink of Unsustainability.” The announcement discussed the problems of Japan‘s music industry, which still heavily relies on CD sales. One of the issues discussed was how this reliance on physical media has led to people purchasing multiple copies of the same CD, contributing to the generation of excessive waste. BMSG declared its commitment to taking action to change the music industry’s structure and minimize CD waste.

The announcement highlighted that the bulk-purchasing of CDs has been a longstanding issue, sparking debate for over a decade. The fact that this announcement came from BMSG, a record label and management agency home to dance and vocal groups with passionate fandoms, created a huge stir, both inside and outside the industry.

Trending on Billboard

In a revealing interview in The Quiet Revolution of Billboard Japan, published on Feb. 20, SKY-HI, CEO of BMSG, Inc., elaborated on the issues highlighted in the company’s recent announcement. Seiji Isozaki, the book’s author and chart director for Billboard Japan, shared his insights from the conversation.

“It was my first time meeting SKY-HI in person, but I’d heard a lot about what he’d said and done before. Some of his activities involved the hit charts, and I found them really thought-provoking. They motivated me in creating the Japanese charts. I thought that discussing the charts with him would offer insights into the artists’ perspectives on chart changes and allow for a multifaceted exploration of issues surrounding hit charts.”

“Meeting him in person, what I felt was his flexible stance on living in the present. At Billboard Japan, we’ve also continued to think about the limits and possibilities of the current music industry through our efforts with the hit charts. Although our positions are different, I strongly felt that he had also been grappling with the same issues, and it was a very encouraging dialogue.”

At the April BMSG convention, members of the entertainment industry watched SKY-HI’s presentation, where he reinforced the company’s commitment to these sustainability recommendations. Through the presentation, which was later streamed on YouTube, SKI-HI spoke directly about the recommendations, sharing them with the rest of the world.

BE:FIRST’s concept single, “Masterplan,” released on April 24, was the first project to embody BMSG’s sustainability proposal. The single comes in a paper sleeve to reduce the amount of plastic generated by CD production. BMSG also eliminated retailer-specific add-ons — collectibles that come with CDs sold by specific music retailers that are randomly packaged with CDs, both of which drive bulk CD purchasing. Due to these decisions, the number of CDs shipped during the period from April 24 to May 22 fell by roughly 70,000, but total sales of singles and single-related merchandise, including merchandise featuring the single’s art, roughly doubled. Using paper sleeves cut plastic usage during the CD production phase by 10 tons and reduced the amount of associated CO2 emissions by 59 tons.

The title track, “Masterplan,” made a splash by debuting at the top of Billboard Japan’s Hot 100 song chart. The album’s solid chart results demonstrated that it’s possible to take the number one position without relying on the bulk purchasing of CDs by fans or retailer-specific add-ons.

“When we think about what makes a hit,” said Isozaki, “it’s important to look at how the hit charts are structured and how valid those charts are—whether those charts resonate with people. Getting to know the evolving Billboard charts in the US and the individuals shaping their evolution, I’ve come to deeply appreciate the significant responsibility we bear.”

“In the U.S., in the early ’90s, Nielsen Music (now Luminate) succeeded in collecting point-of-sale data from record stores across the country. Until then, data had been generated based on the results of fax and telephone surveys. The shift to this new, objective data collection method revolutionized the Billboard Hot 100 lineup overnight. The changes came as quite a shock, both inside the industry and out, and profoundly transformed what it means to be a hit. One thing we find very impressive is how Billboard’s charts have been able to keep resonating with people in the same way by constantly making adjustments, adding new data such as downloads and streaming plays.”

“In the early 2010s, Japan saw a surge in fan-driven bulk purchases due to customer participation activities. The phenomenon brought renewed attention to the practices of the music charts. This raised a dilemma. On the one hand, we needed to recognize the support that fans provided artists by bulk-buying their music. On the other hand, we also needed to ensure that our charts resonated with the broader audience so as to accurately represent which songs were true hits. And, no matter what, our charts should never incentivize unsustainable fan behavior that leads to burnout. So, since the mid-2010s, we’ve been meticulously adjusting the charts weekly to strike just the right balance. These adjustments have gradually reshaped Japan’s definition of a hit song.”

“Today, purchasing multiple copies of the same track has minimal impact on the hit charts. Fans desire longevity in their favorite artists’ careers. SKY-HI’s proposal invites us all to consider how fan activities in Japan can sustainably support artists.”

BMSG says that BE:FIRST’s initiatives are just the beginning of an ongoing effort to improve the sustainability of Japan’s music industry. On July 1, the South Korean boy band ATEEZ and BE:FIRST released their collaborative single, “Hush-Hush.” As BMSG sets its sights on the international arena, it is extending its reach beyond Japan’s borders. The full impact of these moves on the music industries of Japan and the wider world remains to be seen, yet it is evident that BMSG is steadfast in meeting these challenges.

Sasha Colby Lauds Chappell Roan for Supporting Drag Artists: ‘Goddess Sees Goddess’

From one pink pony girl to another, drag icon Sasha Colby is sharing the love with breakout pop “Femininomenon” Chappell Roan.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 15 reacted to the pop star’s interpretation of her now-iconic catchphrase, calling herself “your favorite artist’s favorite artist.”

“The night of the finale for season 16, when I gave up the crown, was also the night of the finale for my Stripped [tour], and that’s when Chappell said it at Coachella,” she said in the interview. “To see Jimmy Fallon say my name is kind of wild. I just talked to Chappell, we just talked for a little bit. We were very meet-and-greet-y, like, ‘I love you, I think you’re amazing.’”

Colby originally referred to herself as “your favorite drag queen’s favorite drag queen” during her “Meet the Queens” interview for season 15 of Drag Race. Roan later presented herself using the phrase during her Coachella set in April, with many of her fans spreading the clip of her introduction online.

During her recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Roan made sure to give proper credit where it was due. “That was a reference to Sasha Colby, and Sasha Colby said, ‘I’m your favorite drag queen’s favorite drag queen,’” she told the host. “It just hit me through the heart. And so I hope one day Sasha Colby watches me, and that’s why I said it.”

Colby added that she appreciated seeing a major pop star directly credit her for her contribution, and said she hoped more pop stars would take notes. “Drag has always been a mirror of pop culture,” she said. “Since Drag Race, we are pop, the tastemakers, and pop girlies look to us for inspiration — much like Chappell Roan! All I can say is, goddess sees goddess, you know? Greatness sees greatness! Your favorite artist’s favorite artist, baby!”
