Missy Elliott is returning to the big screen as part of an untitled musical project created by Pharrell Williams and Michel Gondry.
According to reports, superstar Missy Elliott is making a return to the big screen with a role in a musical helmed by Pharrell Williams and Michel Gondry. The unnamed project will be directed by Gondry, best known for directing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The four-time Grammy Award winner shared the news with her millions of fans in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday (April 30). “Ayyyyye,” she wrote, accompanied by emojis of flames, a dancing woman and hands up giving a high-five.

The film’s coming-of-age plot takes place during the summer of 1977, with the setting being inspired by the Atlantis Apartments in the Virginia Beach, Virginia, neighborhood where Williams grew up. The star-studded cast also includes Academy Award winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Halle Bailey, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Academy Award nominee Brian Tyree Henry. The script is being written by Martin Hynes (Toy Story 4) and Steven Levenson (FX’s Fosse/Verdon), as Pharrell Williams is producing with Mimi ValdĂ©s through i am OTHER, and Gil Netter is producing through Gil Netter Productions.
For Elliott, it’s her first time appearing on the big screen in a sizable role since appearing as the character Missy (who performed a duet of “Car Wash” with Christina Aguilera) in the 2004 DreamWorks animated film Shark’s Tale. The singer/songwriter/rapper also appeared as herself in the 2003 film Honey, starring Jessica Alba and was in two episodes of the Fox musical drama, Star, in 2017.
The role comes as Missy Elliott is set to go on her first headlining tour this summer. The Out of This World Tour — The Missy Elliott Experience will also feature Ciara, Timbaland and Busta Rhymes. It opens in Vancouver, Canada, on July 4 with dates in 24 cities across the United States and Canada including Seattle, Oakland, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Denver, Tampa, Atlanta, Detroit and Toronto with the finale in Rosemont, Illinois, on Aug. 22.

Fabolous is sharing his opinion on the current state of rap by honing in on what he considers redundancy in female rap.

Taking to social media, the Hip-Hop veteran shared his opinion on the sector of the genre that is leading the pack, sharing that he’s “happy” to see so many women doing their thing in Hip Hop, he’d love it if some of these “strong” women incorporated topics about their life experiences in their rhymes a little more.

“I love hearing female rappers talking some real sh-t,” Fab wrote on his Instagram Story on Sunday (Jul. 16). “Women are so strong. Have so many stories and perspectives that we need to hear in pure form. No disrespect to any female rappers out there but I think there’s only one style of female rap/Hip Hop being promoted, programmed, and looked at as successful now.”
While Fab is calling for diversity, other rappers are weighing in on the influx of femcees dominating the charts, including Lil Baby, Lola Brooke, Glorilla and Lil Durk have all acknowledged women’s current reign, with Durk crediting them for being competitive and focused on their love for Hip Hop rather than the business side.
“Make hip hop fun again we understand everybody got money but let’s f–k em up like we was doing s/o the females who been working salute keep going up,” Lil Durk wrote in his Instagram story last month.
Fabolous is no stranger to supporting female artists, the Street Family head honcho previously collaborated with some of Hip-Hop’s most notable female emcees, including Missy Elliott, Lil’ Kim, Foxy Brown, and Nicki Minaj. Three of his biggest songs in particular, “Take You Home,” “What Should I Do,” and “Can’t Let You Go,” were all created alongside Baltimore artist Lil’ Mo.
In other Fabolous news, the rapper has announced plans to drop a fitness Hip-Hop album with Jim Jones, Dave East, and Maino titled Fit Lit, along with an appearance in Paramount+ Hip-Hop documentary, Mixtape,–followed by the official soundtrack.
As previously reported, the film highlights how authorities got involved in the downfall of the mixtape game and ultimately screwed up a once-thriving portion of the Hip-Hop game. In addition to Fabolous, DJ Green Lantern, A$AP Rocky, 2 Chainz, DJ Khaled, KRS-One, DJ Drama, and Jeezy will also make appearances in the film.

Missy Elliott is using her star power to defend Flyana Boss after social media users posted open criticism over the continued running theme in the young Hip-Hop duo’s videos.

Best friends Folayan and Bobbi LaNea, better known as the sprinting musical team, Flyana Boss, have swiftly become the latest sensation to conquer the internet. Their viral presence has garnered widespread attention online– even snagging a Grammy.

Last week, the “DripDemeanor” rapper/icon clapped back at a critic who felt the need to assert their opinion on the group — who has become known for physically running through their videos while reciting lyrics to their songs — and their marketing method after labeling the methods as “redundant.”
“How many times they gon do the same thing in different videos for this song?” In their visuals, the girls are seen running through crowds of people while rapping their hit song “You Wish.”
The tweet received a response from Missy Elliott, who defended Flyana Boss’ artistic decisions by shedding light on how she experienced similar criticism when breaking out in the late-1990s.
“This old school tactic if you do a bunch of things you confuse the audience,” Missy explained. “They don’t know who you are That’s why most successful artist have eras and for that era they consistently do the same style and sound so you build a particular fan base. [For] Example, my 1st album I wore FingerWaves the entire time,” she wrote. “My sound was a futuristic vibe even down to the way I danced it was a jerky move. But all the elements established the type of artist I was
you must be consistent when you are a new artist.”

Missy’s authoritative teaching continued after another user asked the entertainment legend if confusing the audience by “doing a bunch of things” pertains to an artist’s sound as well; to which Missy replied that artists should focus on crafting a signature sound before experimenting with other creative decisions.
“I feel you should create a sound 1st so ppl can attach that sound to the artist and it becomes your signature,” Missy wrote. “Once the consumer know your sound then you can experiment. TeddyRiley he had the new Jack swing sound. Prince always used that flair drum it was his signature. So it’s like a entire package. That’s why you may see people say this was riri pop era or this was this artist R&B era because for that album they pretty much stay consistent the whole album even down to hair and clothes. Think of the group TLC oversized combat boots era.”

In other Missy Elliott news, fellow legend Busta Rhymes has completely shut down the idea of facing off against the “Supa Dupa Fly” rapper in a Verzuz battle; citing that he wouldn’t be able to fully flex on her with bravado as the reason. In a recent interview with Apple Music, the “Beach Ball” rapper shared that he was told there are two valid competitors that might be able to take him on in a Verzuz: Jay-Z or Missy Elliott.

“See, there’s never a Missy option,” Busta replied. “The reason why I can’t ever do a Verzuz or compete with Missy on a challenging level is ’cause that’s my twin. I’m Missy and she’s Busta Rhymes. I will never ever ever ever ever because I love her so much, I can’t talk my shit the way I would want to in a Verzuz. I love her too much and I hold her in a regard that’s so crazy.”

While some of your favorite rappers have ducked the smoke, Busta Rhymes says he will not battle Missy Elliot in a Verzuz.

As spotted on HipHopDX the Brooklyn, New York native recently paid a visit to the Apple Music studio and discussed his come up, his recent BET Hip-Hop Lifetime Achievement Award win and more. Midway during the conversation he was asked what the possibilities of a Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliot Verzuz battle and he made it clear it is not happening. “Never with Missy,” he explained. “The reason why I can’t ever do a Verzuz or even compete with Missy on a challenging level is ’cause that’s my twin
I’m Missy and she’s Busta Rhymes. I will never ever ever ever ever, because I love her so much, I can’t talk my sh*t the way I would want to in a Verzuz.” He went on to clarify that it would be a battle but more so a celebration.

The interview landed on Missy’s radar and she posted to her Instagram account confirming Busta’s commentary. “To my Twin @bustarhymes, we have been glued at the hip for 26 years & my LOVE & ADMIRATION for you still grows. For Elliott, who gave the world the iconic album Supa Dupa Fly, this will be her first time being on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s ballot, per Variety, and there is no one more deserving of the honor.

Among her many accomplishments, Elliott is the first and only female Hip-Hop artist with six platinum albums on her resume. She has written numerous hits for herself and other artists while producing iconic records for the late Aaliyah, Keyshia Cole, 702, Nicole Wray, and Jazmine Sullivan.

This Is The Second Time For ATCQ
For ATCQ, this is the second time the Queens Hip-Hop group has made the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s finalist list. They were nominated in 2022 with last year’s inductees Enimem, Lionel Richie, plus Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

ATCQ is one of the best Hip-Hop groups ever, blessing the Hip-Hop genre with three platinum albums that gave us classic records like “Find A Way,” “Award Tour,” “Can I Kick It?” and “Check The Rhime.”
The 70s iconic Detroit R&B group The Spinners, best known for hits like “It’s A Shame,” got their start with Motown Records before jumping ship to Atlantic Records, releasing 19 Top 10 hits on the R&B Billboard Charts, including songs your parents still sing while cleaning the house like “Sadie,” “Ill Be Around,” “The Rubberband Man,” and “Might Love.”
How To Help Get The Into The Hall
If Missy Elliott and ATCQ make it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they will join the likes of Run DMC, the Beastie Boys, N.W.A., JAY-Z, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Biggie Smalls, Tupac Shakur, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.
If you want to ensure Missy Elliott, ATCQ, and The Spinners make it in, fans are encouraged to vote, which they can do daily on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s website until April 28.
