After splitting with her original record label in October, Megan Thee Stallion is entering a new era: A source at Warner Music Group confirmed to Billboard that the artist has signed a distribution agreement with the company that includes services from a select global team.

For years, Megan Thee Stallion was embroiled in a legal battle over the deal she signed early in her career with 1501 Certified Entertainment, which released her music in partnership with 300 Entertainment. (300 was acquired by Warner Music Group in 2021.) In October, the rapper and 1501 “reached a confidential settlement to resolve their legal differences,” making Megan Thee Stallion — who is managed by Roc Nation — a free agent. “I’m so excited to be doing something for the first time independent since it was just me and my mama,” she said during an Instagram Live session.

Artists prize distribution deals because they typically get to retain ownership of their recordings. At the same time, Megan Thee Stallion will still benefit from WMG’s global infrastructure, marketing muscle and longstanding relationships at radio and television. Her team will include some staffers from 300 Entertainment as well as others across the company. (A rep for Megan Thee Stallion did not respond to requests for comment.)

These types of distribution agreements within major label systems have become more common in the modern music industry once artists gain a certain amount of leverage. Some young acts that have fast-climbing viral hits are even able to negotiate similarly favorable agreements right at the start of their careers, which would have been unthinkable a decade ago.

There is a potential downside to these arrangements: Because labels stand to earn less revenue from distribution deals, they may be less incentivized to throw their full weight behind these artists. Still, this is a dream scenario for many artists because it inverts the traditional music industry power dynamic.

Historically, artists handed their recordings over to a label in perpetuity in exchange for an advance and the chance to become a household name. Now it’s possible to have the best of both worlds. “That’s an amazing position to be in, to keep your copyright and still be famous,” says Tab Nkhereanye, a senior vp of A&R at BMG. (BMG has long offered artists licensing deals; in these agreements, ownership of recordings typically reverts back to an artist after a set period, conditional upon recouping the costs of the deal.)

As a result of these shifts in the industry, though, the term “independent” has become so roomy as to be nearly meaningless. It now stretches from an act self-releasing homemade recordings on TuneCore for a handful of fans all the way to Bad Bunny, who fills stadiums and tops charts around the world while enjoying lavish funding from The Orchard, which is owned by Sony Music. Most basketball players probably wouldn’t group together Giannis Antetokounmpo and a decent guy in a local pickup game, but that’s sort of what happens on a daily basis in the music industry. Adding to the confusion — “indie” is now often used to describe a specific style of rock music, regardless of whether it’s released by a major or independent label.

In many cases, “I don’t know that [independent] is really an applicable phrase anymore,” says Lulu Pantin, founder of Loop Legal. “The big distinction is self-funding versus receiving funding from an outside source.” “Now it seems like you’re either an unsigned artist or an independent artist,” adds Todd Rubenstein, founder of Todd Rubenstein Law.

Artists once required a hefty amount of financial support to record, manufacture, distribute, and market their music. Signing with a major record company meant acts had more resources at their disposal, while remaining independent signified a scrappier, bootstrapping approach, usually with a select group of labels — 4AD, for example, or Secretly Canadian. “Releasing on XL at one point was the height of independence,” says Ben Blackburn, who manages girl in red.

The initial outlay required to get a successful artist project off the ground plummeted with the rise of production programs accessible on laptops, digital distribution companies, streaming services, and social media platforms. Artists had a “newfound ability to compete on the same level without [the major labels], and in doing so, the ability to claim more control and literal ownership,” says Nabil Ayers, president of Beggars Group US.

“With digital distribution, artists weren’t going to keep doing perpetuity deals on the master side for five albums and an 18 point royalty,” adds Nick Stern, a longtime artist manager. “It was just a matter of time.”

In the second half of the 2010s, especially during the SoundCloud rap era, it became more common to hear about major labels chasing artists who were already amassing streams by the million. This meant that record companies had to give up a lot for the privilege of being associated with the artists, rather than the other way around.

Today many rising artists and their managers are intent on giving away as little as possible. This means that the major labels have all beefed up their distribution-and-services offerings, making attractive deals like the one obtained by Megan Thee Stallion more prevalent. “All of these major players with power and money decided to head into the [distribution] fray,” says Blackburn.

Sony Music has had the most success with the distribution-and-services model: It runs these deals through The Orchard, which enjoyed a bigger current market share in 2023 than any frontline label other than Republic and Interscope. The Orchard is hardly a loner, though; every major label group has at least one, if not more, distribution companies. (Warner has the Alternative Distribution Alliance, though Megan’s deal doesn’t run through ADA, according to a source with knowledge of the arrangement.)

“There are a lot of options out there for people to find those kinds of deals now that there weren’t even two years ago, and certainly weren’t five years ago when we started,” says J. Erving, a manager and founder of the artist services and distribution company Human Resources (which was acquired by Sony Music in 2020). “Initially a lot of artist managers and executives thought that type of deal was subpar in terms of your ability to have success. Now it’s something that’s sought after.”

A side effect of this new desirability, though, is “there really is no clear delineation of what it means to be truly independent,” Pantin says. “Independence now is a flexible term,” Blackburn adds. “It’s also a commodified term.”

This means the music industry would probably benefit from developing a new vocabulary to distinguish between artists with wildly different levels of financial support. “The record industry is currently lumped into two sectors: the majors and the independents, or ‘the rest,’” Ayers says. “‘The rest’ is actually a very disparate group of interests that don’t belong in a single bucket. We need a better way to describe the growing number of entities out there.”

Rubenstein agrees: “A deal with a major — or major independent label — is different than using a larger distributor that provides limited services, which is different than being your own ‘label’ and just loading your music up via DistroKid and jumping on TikTok,” he notes.

For now, as Blackburn puts it, “independence in the eye of the beholder.”

Nicki Minaj dropped her latest studio album Pink Friday 2 on December 8, which is also her birthday, and fans online are already running it up and hopping online to share their thoughts. Some fans believe that Nicki Minaj took a shot at both Megan Thee Stallion and Latto on two different songs on the album.
Pink Friday 2 is the fifth studio album from Nicki Minaj, following 2018’s Queen. The Queens star has released tracks and done features in the span of those five years between projects and the anticipation for the new album was high.
Across 22 tracks, Minaj rocks alongside her Young Money boss Lil Wayne and Tate Kobang on the track “RNB” and she rocks with her past collaborator Drake on the track “Needle” while J. Cole graces the song “Let Me Calm Down.”
The tracks that fans are discussing online regarding the alleged disses are “FTCU” and “Fallin 4 U,” the former of which features the lyrics, “Stay in your Tory lane, b*tch, I’m not Iggy” but this could be a reach as the pair seemingly squashed their issues over a failed collaboration.
On “Fallin 4 U,” the lyrics in question are, “Picture you ending up under the seat, where the dread at?/ Picture not listening when I said you would dread that/ I mean locs, ho, you-you’s a chop ho/ I’m number one, y’all go argue over top four,” which some stating the “locs, ho” word scheme was a dig at Latto.
Of course, none of this can be confirmed but the discussion regarding the release of Pink Friday 2 is bubbling on X right now. We’ve got reactions along with birthday wishes from all sides below.

Shannon Sharpe let his lust for Megan Thee Stallion get the best of him.
The ESPN First Take co-host and Pro Football Hall of Famer is in hot water with Megan Thee Stallion’s fans. During the recent episode of his podcast Nightcap with fellow former NFL player Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson.
In the clip that has since gone viral, Sharpe didn’t bite his tongue at all when talking about his attraction to Megan Thee Stallion and sharing in explicit detail what he wants to do the Houston rapper sexually.
“I’d have her stretched out like quarter to three,” Sharpe said before adding: “I do it three ways, Ocho: deep, hard and continuously … I’d have her opening up like saloon doors.”

The fallout from 55-year-old former professional comments was swift. One person wrote on Instagram, “Love Shannon, but this is wildly inappropriate,” they wrote. “He is employed by ESPN. They don’t play that, he needs to tone it down on these types of comments. It’s not the 90s anymore.”
“In light of all the lawsuits, I just want men to chill for a min. Like take a step back from the overt/public sex talk and stories and find something safe to chat about,” another commenter said.
“Giving perv vibes. Please go find something else to do cause this ain’t it,” another person wrote. “Shannon is getting a bit too comfortable. He should relax, he’s giving old & creepy,” another added.
Shannon Sharpe Apologizes To Megan Thee Stallion
Sharpe has seen the criticism and used his Nightcap podcast to address it. While he was still on the joking tip with Ochocinco, he apologized to Megan Thee Stallion.
“I’ll tell you what. If Meg had any problem with anything that I’ve said, let me take the time to say I’m sorry, I apologize,” Sharpe said. Ocho added, “And we love you.”

Megan Thee Stallion has yet to respond, but we’re sure she won’t pay it any mind. Sharpe’s comments come after the “Cobra” rapper took to Instagram to address the scrutiny about her love life and her love for sex.
“It’s like, nobody be listening to my music. They be like, ‘Megan Thee Stallion, I cannot believe she likes to have sex! I cannot believe Megan Thee Stallion f***s!
Thee Stallion also claims she is being stingy with her goodies from now on and is turning over a new leaf.
“But no, I am turning over a new leaf. And I’m stingy with the coochie cat. I’m not a freak anymore. Oh my God. I’m done. I’m done with the streets. So toxic in the streets. I’m tired with the streets.”

We hear you Meg.

It’s almost universally understood that Pardi fumbled the ball when he cheated on Meg Thee Stallion. Well, in order to up the struggle, he dropped a diss track aimed at his former flame, and he’s getting cooked for the tomfoolery.

Keeping it a been, we knew this inevitable after Meg dropped “Cobra” and made Pardi public enemy no. 1 when she rapped that he cheated on her in her own home. So there was Pardison Fontaine hopping on Al Gore’s Internet talking some ish about this is for Megan Thee Person and it only went downhill from there, respectfully.

Pardi’s suspect retort is getting slandered for a myriad of reasons including the audacity to say he actually didn’t cheat on her in his crib or his use of the usual “loose woman” rhetoric. X users clearly aren’t falling for the okey doke and are dragging Pardi for all the filth.
And if you’re saying Pardi ate, we’re just going to assume you think Tory Lanez is a political prisoner. Good luck with that.
We compiled some of the best bombs aimed at Pardi, for archival purposes.

Social media loves a good mess to dissect. Case in point, Pardison Fontaine is currently persona non grata after Meg Thee Stallion graphically outed how he cheated on her via her new song, “Cobra.”
While Pardi is absolutely getting cooked on the Internets, investigators (that would be social media users) have determined the woman that was allegedly blessing Pardi with oral sex, in Meg’s home no less, is Jada Kingdom, a Jamaican model and singer.
However, she is denying any such claim. “i know it’s gonna drive y’all crazy to not have someone specific to terrorize for y’all president but it wasn’t me,” she wrote on her IG Stories. It’s also unconfirmed if she is currently in a relationship with Pardi.

Nevertheless, a lie travels much further than the truth—while many just ain’t convinced.

Who Is Jada Kingdom?
For those who case, she’s apparently a model, which can basically mean anything these days—no shade. She was apparently born in Jamaica and is a legit singer, though she might be more well known for appearing in Sean Kingston’s “One Way” video.

Pardi You Had One Job
But anyway, for now, Jada is trending because of her alleged shenanigans with Pardi while he was supposed to be committed to Meg Thee Stallion. The voluptuous model is also getting cooked on X, formerly known as Twitter, while getting thirsted over because, X users be horny. As was Pardi, allegedly. But Jada is also getting dragged because she seems to be a Tory Lanez supporter, too.

Megan Thee Stallion is BACK and coming in HOT with “Cobra,” the first single off her newly formed imprint, Hot Girl Productions, that has the Hotties screaming yaaaassss, and giving her ex, Pardison Fontaine, the side eye.
Thee Stallion gets really introspective on her latest single, “Cobra,” and details all the drama she had to deal with to get back to this point.
Amidst all the excitement for the new song, Megan Thee Stallion’s former boo, Pardi, is catching all of the strays. In the explosive second verse of the song and accompanying music video, the Houston rapper details some infidelity that went down in her bed.
“Pulled up, caught him cheatin’/ Gettin’ his d*ck sucked in the same spot I’m sleepin’,” the “Hot Girl Summer” crafter raps.

While not saying his name directly, the Hotties and everyone else quickly assumed she was talking about Pardi. The couple, who made their relationship official in 2021, dated for two years before quietly splitting up.
Thee Stallion was spotted with Belgian soccer player Romelu Lukaku at a wedding for his teammate—no word on if the two are still dating.

While Pardi is now linked to Burna Boy’s long-rumored ex, Jada Kingdom.

The Hotties Are BIG MAD
No surprise, following the salacious bars, the Hotties are H O T and have been reading Pardi for filth on X, formerly known as Twitter. “pardison FONTAINE, t*ry l*nez, and fuck ass DR*KE… count your fuckin days,” one X user wrote.

While others are just flat out saying they will put their hands on the rapper/songwriter, “Pardison Fontaine, when I catch you…” another post on x read.

We don’t condone violence here at HipHopWired. Still cheating on Megan Thee Stallion with some other woman in her bed, we totally understand why the ladies, especially the Hotties, are BIG MAD.

Damm Pardi.

Free from the shackles of 1501 Certified Entertainment, Megan Thee Stallion isn’t wasting any time delivering new music to the Hotties.
Following the news that she and her former label 1501 Certified Entertainment settled their issues, Thee Stallion shares details of “Cobra,” the first single off her Hot Girls Productions, the rapper’s “independent music and entertainment entity,” according to a press release.

Megan Thee Stallion has been methodically teasing the single set to arrive on November 3 across music streaming platforms, and based on the IG posts, there will be a video featuring the Hip-Hop star donning fangs and snake eyes.

Thee Stallion also shared a photo of the single artwork that solely features the rapper showing off her well-defined curves while rocking nothing but a costume bikini.
The same photo will also live on merchandise if you need a t-shirt of an oiled-up Megan Thee Stallion in the middle of a jungle in your life; we don’t blame you if you do.

Megan Thee Stallion Is BOOKED & BUSY
The single arrives right after Halloween, which is clearly the rapper’s favorite time of the year. She just recently held her annual Hottieween party in Atlanta.
This year’s edition of the bash was Tim Burton-themed and saw Megan Thee Stallion dressed as a flower. Other notable guests include Victoria Monet, GloRilla, Kash Doll, and more.

She also got into the celebrity Halloween spirit and recently shared her costume on the gram.

Mega Thee Stallion and her knees also hit the One MusicFest stage over the weekend in Atlanta, where she reminded attendees of all the hits she got in the stash.

We can’t wait to hear what “Cobra” sounds like, which is only part one of her rollout under the Hot Girls Productions imprint.

1501 Certified Entertainment will no longer be a thorn in the side of Megan Thee Stallion.
Spotted on Vulture via Billboard, the years of back and forth and court battles between Thee Stallion and 1501 Certified Entertainment have finally ended after both parties agreed to “amicably part ways.”

The Houston Hip-Hop star and Carl Crawford’s imprint “mutually reached a confidential settlement to resolve their legal differences,” lawyers revealed to Billboard on October 19.
The terms of the agreement were unavailable in Billboard’s reporting.

The news further confirms Megan Thee Stallion’s newfound independence after revealing to the Hotties that she is no longer on a label and will fund her next project, which seems to be on the way.
To show there is no more ill will between them, Carl Crawford, who wasn’t shy about bumping his gums and attacking his former artist throughout their legal battle, told Billboard that he and his label “wish Megan the very best in her life and career.”
The Road To Freedom Was A Hard-Fought One For Megan Thee Stallion
Megan Thee Stallion’s road to freedom from her now former label was a hard-fought one. The “Big Ole Freak” rapper filed multiple lawsuits against 1501 due to her deal that she alleged was “unconscionable,” with the support of her management, Roc Nation.
In our previous reporting, Thee Stallion accused her former label of trying to sabotage the release of her last project, Traumazine, the final album in her deal, and is owed money from missing royalties.
Thee Stallion’s lawyers even claimed that 1501 was draining its bank accounts to avoid paying Megan Thee Stallion.
The label countered, claiming Thee Stallion owed them money from her tours.
Congrats to Thee Stallion on getting her freedom.

Megan Thee Stallion is officially a free agent and is using her money to get her next project out.
On a recent Instagram Live session, Thee Stallion revealed to her loyal Hotties that she has gone independent. No longer having a label means she will be footing the bill to get her next project out.

“This part of my album is definitely very much funded by Megan Thee Stallion because you know we trying to get off… Y’all know what’s the tea,” the Houston Hip-Hop star said.

The “Big Ole Freak” crafter also added that she would be paying for the studio time, music videos, and marketing for the yet-to-be-named project that she could possibly already be teasing in previous IG posts.
“The next s**t y’all about to see ’bout to be all straight from Megan Thee Stallion’s brain and Megan Thee Stallion’s wallet. Yes, we are in my pockets, hotties, so let’s do our big one,” she said.

Megan Thee Stallion & Her Drama With Her Label
The news of Thee Stallion going independent should surprise no one, and she has been engaged in a very public battle with Carl Crawford’s 1501 Certified Entertainment.
The rapper claimed her last project, Traumazine, which has been certified gold by the RIAA, was the previous project to fulfill her contractual obligation.
Crawford argued the project before Traumazine, Something For The Hotties, did not qualify as an album; thus, Megan Thee Stallion did not fulfill her contractual obligations.
Thee Stallion also accused her former label of trying to sabotage her career and acting funny with her money. She was granted a restraining order by a judge in 2022.
The news also has some on social media reacting, being loud and wrong, mainly directing energy towards Roc Nation, which manages Thee Stallion and has nothing to do with funding her music projects.

As long as Thee Stallion is mentally in a good space, we are happy she has finally rid herself of Carl Crawford and 1501 Certified Entertainment.

Megan Thee Stallion’s foundation seeks to spread joy worldwide with help from the Southern Black Girls and Women Consortium (SBGWC) on International Day of the Girl Child.

Spotted on NewsOne, the SBGWC announced its partnership with the Grammy Award-winning Houston rapper’s Pete and Thomas Foundation for a new #BlackGirlJoyChallenge.

The website also reports that Nike will lend support to help maintain the #BlackGirlJoyChallenge movement to inspire youth while promoting mental health through joy.
Per NewsOne:
We are incredibly excited to collaborate with Megan Thee Stallion’s Pete and Thomas Foundation,” Malikah Berry Rogers, executive director of the Southern Black Girls, stated in a press release. “There’s a song that says, ‘I’m a movement by myself, but we’re a force when we’re together.’ That line is true with this special cycle of the #BlackGirlJoyChallenge because together, we are igniting a movement that celebrates mental health and wellness through the simple, yet powerful, act of spreading JOY.”
Megan Thee Stallion Continues To Tackle Mental Health Awareness
Megan Thee Stallion has been very vocal about dealing with mental health issues. In September, she announced on Instagram the creation of her mental health website, Seize The Awkward.
In the caption alongside a video, the rapper wrote, “Y’all, it’s okay to not be okay. Reach out to a friend if you see them going through it.”

Seize The Awkward is a website that gives people the resources to have tough conversations about mental health, allowing them to help a friend or themselves.
If anyone knows about struggling with mental health, it’s Megan Thee Stallion, who had dealt with hate following the Tory Lanez shooting and her hating ass label 1501 Certified Entertainment.
Salute to Thee Stallion and Southern Black Girls and Women Consortium for prioritizing Black girl’s mental health.
