Billboard Explains: Victoria Monét’s Rising Star

Victoria Monét:
I’ve been writing for so long and I’ve seen glimpses of it for my pen, but not for me as an artist.

Narrator:
Her star is definitely on the rise, and Victoria Monét is Billboard‘s Women in Music’s Rising Star honoree. The singer-songwriter made a name for herself behind the scenes, but now, it’s Victoria’s time to shine on the Billboard charts.

This is Billboard Explains: Victoria Monét’s Rising Star.

Victoria Monét just keeps getting better. She first charted on the Hot 100 in 2019 with the song “Monopoly” alongside Ariana Grande, and her own song “On My Momma” has peaked at No. 33 in 2024, just after she won the Grammy for best new artist.

Besides her own rising career, Victoria Monét is a staple on the charts for songs she’s written or co-written, including 22 Hot 100 charting songs. She’s a writer on two No. 1 Hot 100 songs, Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” and “7 Rings.”

Matisyahu Talks His Upcoming Song ‘Ascent’ That Speaks Out Against Antisemitism & More | Billboard News

Matisyahu opens up about his new EP ‘Hold The Fire,’ what inspired him to write his upcoming song “Ascent” that speaks out against rising antisemitism, becoming an independent artist, why his trip to Israel following the October 7th attacks made him hopeful for the future, his two concerts that were canceled in Arizona and more.

Matisyahu
I was feeling really hopeless about what the future is going to look like for all of us and went to Israel and it renewed my faith in humanity.

Matisyahu
What’s up, this is Matisyahu and you’re watching Billboard News.

Rania Aniftos
Hey, everybody, it’s Rania Aniftos with Billboard News and we’re sitting here today with Matisyahu. You have a new EP out, ‘Hold the Fire.’ There’s something I’ve always liked about your music, is it’s always music with a message. So tell me a bit about the theme surrounding this EP and the inspiration when writing it.

Matisyahu
Sure, the theme comes from, the basis is a dream that I had maybe about 10 years ago in my early 30s, as I was playing lots of shows and started out, you know, with my career and then had a family and lived in New York and moved to LA, but playing, really grinding and playing lots of shows a year, like maybe 200 shows a year in order to survive, you know, up until COVID. One of the themes that became relevant to me is: How do you still stay in love with music after you’ve beenplaying so many shows and playing those songs over and over again? And I went through a complicated relationship with the music because it’s like your dream when you’re a teenager, and then it becomes reality. And then it’s like your dream come true. And then you’re making music and there’s the art and there’s the business, then there’s like, it’s like a relationship, you know. This EP is called ‘Hold The Fire’ and it’s about stamina, as an artist, and it’s about how to not let … your fire go out. But at the same time, you know, if you still stoke your fire too much, you could burn everything up and you could burn up in your own fire. And I guess the idea in the opening track is called “Fireproof.”

The 30 Best Birthday Songs

Gathering friends and family around a candlelit cake to sing “Happy Birthday to You” has been a birthday tradition in English-speaking households for over a century. In 1998, the Guinness Book of World Records even named it the most recognized song in the English language, more than a century after it was first written by sisters Mildred and Patty Smith Hill for the 1893 book titled Song Stories for the Kindergarten.

Whether you love it or hate it, it’s safe to say the tune and its many extended versions and comedic renditions aren’t going anywhere… but it doesn’t have to be the only song that defines your big day. Artists from Lesley Gore in the ‘60s to Stevie Wonder in the ‘80s to Katy Perry in the 21st century have all completely reinvented the long-established birthday singing tradition, with new and inventive melodies of their own.

It’s definitely a good thing that there’s such an abundance of birthday-themed music, because let’s face it — birthdays can be complex. Along with all the cake, candles, streamers and presents come bittersweet, complicated feelings about turning one year older, from nostalgia for birthdays past to unbridled terror for the future, grief for one’s youth, confusion over what to do next and total happiness at the chance to live life to the fullest for another trip around the sun. The musicians on this list were able to capture all of those hyper-specific but universally felt emotions, and then some.

From classic tracks that will make you want to “party like it’s your birthday,” even when it’s not (a la 50 Cent), to deep cuts that have you questioning your own mortality (we’re looking at you, Sufjan Stevens’ “Happy Birthday”), check out Billboard’s ranking of the 30 best birthday songs below.

Billboard Explains: Tems’ Breakthrough on the Charts

Tems:
I am all about giving back. I’m all about being there for the people that need me and being a part of something that is bigger than myself.

Alyssa Caverley:
Nigerian singer Tems has truly broken through to become a huge sensation, and Billboard‘s Women In Music is honoring the talented singer. She first charted on the Hot 100 in 2021 and has been shining ever since. This is Billboard Explains: Tems’ Breakthrough on the Charts.

Tems has enjoyed some big collaborations on the Hot 100, including “Essence” alongside Wizkid and Justin Bieber; it peaked at No. 9 in 2021. A year later, the singer held the No. 1 spot for one week with the song “Wait for U”; she was featured alongside Drake and Future’s hit.

Not only has she enjoyed success on the Hot 100, she has charted 15 songs on the Billboard U.S. Afrobeat Songs chart, including two No. 1s with “Essence” and “Free Mind” in 2022. With two EPs behind her, she’s poised to release her debut studio album in 2024.
