American singer/songwriter and Youtuber Poppy has returned to Sumerian Records and released the new single and music video “Church Outfit.”

Sumerian Records founder Ash Avildsen says he was thrilled to bring Poppy — known for representing “a future where high art and high fashion equal subversion of the highest order,” according to her bio — back to Sumerian after a brief stint at Lava Records, which released her EP Stagger last year.

“The only thing more exciting than signing an iconic artist for the first time is signing them again when they choose to return home,” Avildsen says. “Poppy is a pioneer and lover of music, film, pro-wrestling, the unorthodox and the avant-garde. That is why I believe Sumerian is still the best label in the world for her. We are thrilled to have her back.”

During her initial time as a Sumerian Records artist, Poppy released two albums — 2020’s I Disagree and 2021’s Flux — and the 2021 EP Eat (NXT Soundtrack). During that period, she also became the first-ever solo female artist to be nominated for best metal performance at the Grammys for her 2019 single “Bloodmoney.”

Beyond tallying 100 million-plus streams, according to a press release, Poppy has been featured on the covers of NME, Revolver, Upset, Kerrang! and Tush and performed at the 2021 Grammy Awards and the 2022 Glastonbury festival. She’s toured with The Smashing Pumpkins and Jane’s Addiction.

“It’s an artist’s responsibility to always change,” Poppy explained in a press release announcing her return to Sumerian. “I don’t think I’d want to be in my body if I was repeating the same thing over and over again. I’m only competing with myself. I will continue to write the story until I get tired of the book. Then, I’ll write another one.”

This is Signed, a new biweekly column that rounds up artist signings at labels, agencies, management companies and more.

Melanie Chisholm, better known as Melanie C aka “Sporty Spice” of the Spice Girls, joined the roster of management company Various Artists for global representation; her U.S. agent at the firm is Matt Luxon. According to a press release, Melanie C has co-written a total of 11 No. 1 singles in the U.K. Her booking agent in the U.S. is Marty Diamond of Wasserman Music, while her booking agent in the U.K. is Alex Hardee, also of Wasserman Music.

The round was led by Coop Records with support from Palm Tree Crew Crypto, Noise DAO, Woodstock DAO and Fire Eyes DAO as well as several angel investors. Allan is represented by manager Delfina Glover and agent Phil Quist at CAA.

On Thursday (March 23), 15-year-old New York phenom Sugarhill Ddot is officially part of the Priority Records family.

“Being signed to Priority Records is a blessing,” said the teenager in a press release. “I thought being a signed artist would never be possible. I’m grateful for this opportunity.”

Originally named after the famous Sugar Hill area in Harlem, Ddot has gained traction courtesy of his trap-laden records. Notching co-signs from Drake and Lil Durk, Ddot has released notable Tri-state area songs, including “Evil Twins” and “Evil Twins 2.” On YouTube, his videos for “I Wanna Love You,” “Dream” and “The Real Purge” have also amassed a total of 10 million views combined.

Ddot is one of the first artists signed to the newly-revamped Priority Records, which relaunched in September under the Capitol Music Group (CMG) umbrella with CMG executive vp Orlando Wharton at the helm as president. “We’re bringing New York back,” Wharton said in a statement. “Sugarhill Ddot is a star in the making to ignite the resurgence of Priority Records.”

Priority Records was once home to prominent West Coast artists including N.W.A., Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and more. Wharton, an experienced creative talent, was tapped to guide artists across CMG’s portfolio of labels while overseeing the resurrected Priority, which will serve as a dedicated label for new, developing and established hip-hop artists.

“[Priority] is a legendary label that gave artists a voice when they were voiceless; a label that was about real music that didn’t rely on gimmicks to make an impact,” added Wharton.

Mammoth WVH, the hard rock band led by Wolfgang Van Halen, has signed a global record deal with BMG for its forthcoming second studio album. The band has also signed a publishing deal with BMG.

“The Mammoth team and I are so excited to now be a part of the BMG family,” Van Halen said in a statement. “The entire team have welcomed us with open arms and have been nothing short of wonderful. I couldn’t ask for better partners for the future of Mammoth.”

The BMG release, coming this summer, will follow Mammoth WVH’s 2021 self-titled debut on EX1 Records. That set reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums and Top Rock Albums charts, as well as No. 12 on the Billboard 200.  It also included two No. 1s on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart — “Distance” and “Don’t Back Down” — while a third song, “Epiphany,” reached No. 9.  The group became the first act to send its first two songs to No. 1 on that chart since The Glorious Sons in 2019.

At the time of the debut album’s release, Van Halen, who played every instrument on the effort, told Billboard, “I’m so proud of this record and have never worked harder on anything in my life. This is only the beginning. Thank you for being a part of this journey with me.”

Van Halen, the son of late rock god Eddie Van Halen, previewed the new album at Los Angeles’ 5150 Studio in Los Angeles March 6-7. The group’s name comes from the original moniker for his father’s band, Van Halen.

Dan Gill, BMG executive vp of recorded music, said in a statement, “It is rare to come across an artist with such exceptional musical abilities and Wolfgang is that shining example. His new album firmly establishes himself at the forefront of the genre and is destined to become the torch bearer for the new generation of Rock artists.”

Emi Horikawa, BMG vp of creative, added, “From our very first listen to Mammoth WVH, we knew this was something truly exceptional. Wolfgang’s songwriting and sense of melody, coupled with his ability to reinvent the elements of Rock’s power and energy, is sheer talent. We are proud to represent his music publishing and now call BMG his label home.”

Nigerian Afropop singer Adekunle Gold has officially signed with Def Jam Recordings, the company tells Billboard.

“I’ve been following Adekunle Gold since I first heard his record ‘Sade’ in 2016. Over the years, everything in AG’s world has elevated — his songwriting has refined, the scope of his artistry has widened, his vocals have strengthened, his approach to fashion is more distinct, and his showmanship and performance ability have grown exponentially,” says Def Jam CEO/chairman Tunji Balogun in a statement to Billboard. “He’s stepped into stardom on his own terms and is completely comfortable being his true self.”

Balogun added, “When I started at Def Jam, I knew I wanted to bring the label into the Afrobeats space tastefully, with the right artists and partnership. Adekunle felt like the perfect fit – he’d already done so much work on his own to build a base, but I knew that we could scale his audience to an even bigger level if we combined our energies and worked together.”

Gold (real name Adekunle Almoruf Kosoko) describes his signing as a “full circle moment” after Balogun tried signing him years ago, prior to the executive’s 2022 arrival at Def Jam. The “5 Star” singer said that because he and Balogun share Nigerian roots, “he understands it, so signing to Tunji makes sense. He’s like my studio buddy that just comes everywhere I go. The day he doesn’t have time to be there, I know he must’ve been like stupidly busy. He’s great.”

When it comes to signing with Def Jam, Gold continued, “The track record is there. The history is there. They break artists, and they have niche, unique artists like me, so I think it’s the right move for me. All of the things that I’ve done for myself already, they know already and that’s why they’re on board.”

Balogun was in Lagos, Nigeria, says Gold, when he and fellow Nigerian singer Zinoleesky were writing and recording “Party Dey no Stop,” Gold’s new single featuring Zinoleesky that marks his Def Jam debut. “When we started to make the music, it was so easy for me to go in and just attack the song. I wrote my verse, I wrote the chorus, and it was a rap. I knew from then that this song was a jam,” Gold says of the track.

“Party Dey no Stop” arrives ahead of Gold’s fifth studio album due in June. In support of the project, he’ll embark on a four-month world tour that’s set to kick off in North America in September and run through the United Kingdom, Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, South America and the Caribbean through next year.

Gold first rose to fame in 2015 with the single “Sade,” a highlife love song that samples instrumentals from One Direction‘s 2013 hit “Story of My Life.” “Sade” went on to win best alternative song at the 2015 edition of The Headies, a Nigerian music awards show. Gold eventually signed his first record label deal with Olamide‘s YBNL Nation and released his debut studio album, Gold, in 2017. It peaked at No. 7 on Billboard‘s World Albums chart.

After Gold’s YBNL Nation contract expired, “I didn’t quite know what to do,” he says. “I was signed for two years, fresh off the industry. I was just thinking, ‘What am I going to do from here?’ [And] I’m like, ‘You know what? I got this. Let me just start my own thing.’”

The Afrobeats star then started his own label, Afro Urban Records — “one of the best decisions I’ve made,” he says — and put out two albums: 2018’s About 30 and 2022’s Catch Me If You Can. He released his 2020 album, Afro Pop, Vol. 1, under EMI.

In a previous Billboard interview, Gold explained why he switched labels and the benefits of working with distributor Platoon, which helped with the rollout for his last album, Catch Me If You Can, featuring Davido, Lucky Daye, Fatoumata Diawara, Fousheé, Ty Dolla $ign and Stefflon Don. “When I was fully Afro Urban Records and no distribution label, me and my manager [Elizabeth Sobowale] had to do a lot of work. Platoon has the best hands in everything from PR to marketing,” he said at the time. “All I had to do was work on the music and they’re ready to take the rest upon themselves.”

After his groundbreaking success with Wizkid and Tems during his tenure as executive vp of A&R at RCA, Balogun has been playing a monumental role in bolstering Def Jam’s roster with more talent from the African diaspora. In September 2022, the label signed an exclusive worldwide joint venture with Native Records to develop African artists.

“I think AG is a truly global artist, and a rightful ambassador for Nigerian music and the emerging Afrobeats scene,” Balogun says. “He has the talent, virtuosity, focus, work ethic and temperament required to be a worldwide superstar. I’m excited to work with him and the Def Jam team to bring more fans into his world.”

“Hear it from me,” Gold says. “Afrobeats is taking over the world.”

Korean alt-rock artist LØREN has signed with 88rising, the company tells Billboard. The label will release his debut EP, Put Up a Fight, on March 24 in partnership with THEBLACKLABEL.

LØREN gained traction in 2021 with the release of three singles: “All My Friends Are Turning Blue,” “NEED (ooo-eee)” and “EMPTY TRASH.” He has also written several songs for K-pop superstars BLACKPINK and starred in one of their music videos. His social profile is also robust, with over 1.2 million followers on Instagram, and he has graced the covers of magazines including Vogue Hong Kong, DAZED Korea and i-D. He currently models for Saint Laurent.

Put Up a Fight is described as “a pop-punk-meets-indie-rock inspired project” that features “grungy” vocals by LØREN sung in both Korean and English (pre-save here). It’s preceded by the single “Folks.”

Ahead of the EP release, LØREN is set to perform his first-ever U.S. shows at SXSW on March 15 as part of the all-Asian music festival Tiger Den (performing alongside Balming Tiger) and 88rising’s Head in the Clouds New York on May 21.

88rising’s roster also includes Jackson Wang, Warren Hue, BIBI, Joji and NIKI.

Brad Paisley has shifted labels, from his longtime home at Sony’s Arista Nashville, to EMI Records Nashville, under the Universal Music Group Nashville (UMGN) umbrella.

The move reunites Paisley with UMGN chairman/CEO Mike Dungan and president Cindy Mabe. Dungan was instrumental in signing Paisley to his first deal at Arista Nashville, while Mabe served as Paisley’s marketing point person through many of his early album cycles including Mud on the Tires and Time Well Wasted. He also joins a label group roster that includes several of his collaborators, including Carrie Underwood, with whom Paisley co-hosted the CMA Awards for more than a decade and together earned a No. 1 Country Airplay hit with “Remind Me” in 2011. He is also now labelmates with his “Start a Band” collaborator Keith Urban.

“There were two people that should get the credit that you even know my name – Mike Dungan and Cindy Mabe. I ran into Mike at the fishing department at Walmart after having met with several labels and he talked me into signing my first deal with Arista. They assigned this woman named Cindy Mabe to me – we graduated the same day at Belmont. I got to work with her on my first few albums and now I get to work with her at UMG,” Paisley said via a statement. “Cindy’s a genius and terrific human being. She heard what I was up to with the new music, and she pointed me further into the direction I was headed. I’ve never had this kind of enthusiasm and empowerment. She said, ‘Make music that matters.’ It’s an amazing thing to work with Mike and Cindy again. It’s great to know they believe in this music as much as I do.”

For more than two decades, Paisley’s razor-sharp songwriting, keen wit and dedication to country music have garnered him three Grammy Awards, 14 CMA Awards, 15 ACM Awards and more accolades. He was inducted as a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 2001. During his career, he’s posted nine albums at the pinnacle of Billboard’s top country albums chart, and earned nearly two dozen hits on the Country Airplay chart.

Paisley’s first UMG Nashville album is slated for later this year, while he will release a new song from the upcoming project on Feb. 24. Titled “Same Here,” Paisley wrote the song with Lee Thomas Miller and Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith, with production by Luke Wooten.

“Brad is a true creative. He has no boundaries to what he uses as his canvas. He has used his voice and his words as a gift to heal the world through his philanthropy, his song writing, his guitar playing, his entertaining, his music videos, his sense of humor and his heart,” Mabe said via a statement. “He has been a part of the country music duo with Carrie Underwood that helped define country music to the world. And getting to reunite with my friend and collaborator in his next creative adventure is something I’ve wanted for a long time. I cannot wait for him to share the music he has created with the world.”

DJ Khaled is on the move. During a press conference in Miami (Feb. 9), Khaled announced a partnership with Def Jam Recordings for his We The Best imprint. Under the deal, Khaled will also serve as the global creative consultant to Def Jam and UMG.
Khaled joins the label following an eight-year tenure with Epic Records. His run there included four Billboard 200 No. 1 albums, most recently his 2022 release God Did. He also netted six Hot 100 Top 10 tracks, highlighted by his 2017 chart-topper “I’m The One.”

“This new chapter marks a special time for me,” said Khaled in a press release. “The energy at this point in my career is at an all-time high and I’m grateful to Sir Lucian Grainge for allowing me to join his empire at this stage in my journey. Together, we will achieve even greater heights and take it to the next level. I feel blessed and so inspired with renewed energy. I’m excited to not only partner, but to come back home to Def Jam. Tunji Balogun is not only an extraordinary A&R, but a true music-man and visionary who continuously is responsible for introducing the world to some of its next greatest superstars. I’m excited to join my sister and visionary executive LaTrice Burnette once again, as we have had tremendous success on every single project we have collaborated on in the past. Def Jam is the culture and together we will make history yet once again.”

DJ Khaled is a great artist, hitmaker, mentor, and cultural innovator,” added UMG chairman/CEO Sir Lucian Grainge. “It gives me great pleasure to welcome him home to UMG where we look forward to working together to amplify his brilliant creative instincts and unique vision.”

Def Jam chairman/CEO Tunji Balogun also shared his jubilation regarding Khaled’s signing, saying: “Beyond a proven hitmaker, incredible producer, undeniable artist, and consummate showman, DJ Khaled occupies the rarified air of cultural icon. His uncanny ability to continuously have his finger on the pulse of the culture, to reach audiences all over the world in innovative yet authentic ways, and his remarkable savvy for marketing, promoting and eventizing everything he touches is absolutely second to none. We are thrilled to partner with DJ Khaled and We The Best, both as a multi-platinum, award-winning artist and as a valued executive. Without a doubt, Khaled can only make us better.”

Khaled is fresh off his Grammys performance of “God Did,” which featured Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Fridayy and John Legend. He also had five nominations at this year’s show.

Brooklyn rapper Lola Brooke has inked a deal to join the Arista Records roster in collaboration with Team Eighty Productions, Billboard confirmed on Monday (Jan. 9).

Brooke had been weighing offers before deciding to become part of the Arista family, which is under the Sony Music Entertainment umbrella.

“Lola is the rare talent whose presence matches her message,” Arista Records CEO David Massey tells Billboard. “Her music is larger-than-life, but her vision is just as powerful. We’re excited to welcome her to the Arista Records family.”

The punchy drill rapper broke through with her rumbling “Don’t Play With It” featuring Billy B which slow-burned its way to success following a 2021 arrival and cracked the most recent R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.

The tarmac is clear for Lola Brooke to take off and Arista will do their best in guiding the tenacious femcee to stardom.

“From the moment I saw and heard Lola Brooke, I knew it was imperative that I sign her,” Arista VP Kendall “Sav” Freeman adds. “She’s an elite rapper and a born performer with an undeniable vision. Lola has an amazing work ethic, her music is phenomenal and her personality is unmatched. I’m excited for everyone to witness her path to greatness in 2023.”

The magnetic 718 Princess has received A-list co-signs from various celebrities including genre trailblazer Missy Elliott, Cardi B, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, and Kim Kardashian alongside daughter, North, even posted a TikTok featuring “Don’t Play With It.”

Lola Brooke closed out 2022 on a high-note when Future brought her out to perform as a special guest to a sold-out Barclays Center in her hometown.
