Ever since they began dating in 1997, former soccer great David Beckham and wife Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham have been under the red-hot tabloid spotlight. And never was the scrutiny more intense, and more potentially damaging to their relationship, than during the footballer’s rocky four-year tenure with the Real Madrid football club that began in 2003.
The former Spice Girls member reveals just how taxing that time was in the final episode of the new four-part Netflix documentary series Beckham, which both charts the English legend’s rise to fame during a legendary two-decade career, as well as the rocky times in his high-profile marriage to the former pop star/model.
“This was a time when anything he touched turned to gold. I remember saying, ‘You would love to get in the bath, but you can’t because every time you go to get in the bath the bloody water parts and you just walk on straight through,’” Victoria says at one point of the Messiah-like status her model-handsome husband enjoyed in the early 2000s in the series that dropped on Wednesday (Oct. 4).
Cut to a Spanish reporter asking David, “‘Do you think you’re losing out a lot because you’re married? All these women who love you, throw their [underwear] at you?,’” while an English chat show hosts asks the equally pulchritudinous singer — and then mother of their two eldest children — if she was concerned about all the women “throwing” themselves at her husband.
Dogged by allegations of David’s infidelity in the British tabloids, David says, “there was some horrible stories that were difficult to deal with” after his transfer, adding that it was the first time the couple had been put under that kind of pressure in their marriage. When the interviewer asks Victoria if that was the hardest time in their marriage, she swiftly responds, “100%. It was the hardest period for us because it felt like the world was against us.”
Worse still, she adds, it felt like “we were against each other if I’m being completely honest.” Until the Madrid transfer, she says it was like “us against everybody else. But we were together, we were connected.” But in Spain, that connection felt broken. “When we were in Spain, it didn’t really feel like we had each other either. And that’s sad,” she says. “I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me.”
Alone in a new city where he didn’t speak the language, David says the move to Madrid was disorienting, with Victoria struggling to even describe how hard it was on their family as they confronted a fresh hell every day. “It felt like we were not losing each other, but drowning,” he explains.
“It was a nightmare. From the minute we opened the door in the morning, the press were there in cars and everywhere we went, we would get followed,” Victoria says of the time that her husband still can’t quite figure out how they survived. The scrutiny expanded outward to the pair’s children, whose morning commutes to their primary schools were blown up into mad tabloid scrambles that included rude comments shouted at son Brooklyn about his parents. “It was an absolute circus — it’s really entertaining when the circus comes to town, right? Unless you’re in it,” Victoria laments.
Saying his wife is “everything” to him, David recalls that seeing Victoria upset at the attention was incredibly difficult. “But… we’re fighters and at that time we needed to fight for each other. We needed to fight for our family,” he says on the verge of tears, noting that sometimes he didn’t know how he would even walk onto the pitch and pretend that everything was okay whilst feeling “physically sick” every day at work.
“Did I resent David? If I’m being totally honest, yes I did,” Victoria says. “It was probably, if I’m being honest, the most unhappy I’ve ever been in my entire life.” How bad was it? When Victoria was scheduled to give birth to their third son Cruz in February 2005, David said he didn’t think he could be at the hospital because he had a photo shoot… with Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé. “‘Are you kidding me?’” Victoria, who was on bedrest and “about to burst” remembers saying to her husband.
Not feeling her most beautiful after the scheduled c-section, Victoria says she woke up the day after to a tabloid headline that read “What Will Posh Say?” alongside a “gorgeous” picture of Becks with the two superstar singers. “Let me tell you what Posh would say! Posh was pissed off!” she says.
The couple who married in 1999, have four children, daughter Harper (12), Cruz (18), Romeo (21) and Brooklyn (24).
The episode also gives viewers a glimpse at the the soccer player’s immense color-coordinated closet and his week’s worth of pre-selected clothes on a rack, as well as the jubilation that erupted after he won the La Liga championship with Madrid in his final season in 2007. The second half of the episode focuses on Beckham’s game-changing transfer to the Los Angeles Galaxy team that somehow made him an even bigger star and helped boost soccer to true major league status in the United States.
That move also included an Oscar-worthy “Welcome to America” party at the LA. Museum of Contemporary Art in 2007 that was thrown by pal Tom Cruise and Will Smith and which was attended by Jada Pinkett Smith, Katie Holmes, Tyrese, Ron Howard, Brooke Shields, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, Eva Longoria, Bruce Willis, Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy and Friends‘ Matthew Perry, among many others. The night famously included Cruise re-creating his Risky Business dance and Stevie Wonder singing “Happy Birthday” to the guest of honor.

The singer took to the stage with her guitar and delivered her soulful rendition, causing coaches John Legend and Niall Horan to turn their chairs before she could even complete the first verse.
“You used to call me on my cell phone/ Late night when you need my love/ Call me on my cell phone/ Late night when you need my love/ And I know when that hotline bling/ That can only mean one thingI know when that hotline bling/ That can only mean one thing,” she sang.
After she gave each of the coaches lavender necklaces in their favorite colors, the commentary on LVNDR’s performance began, with Legend stating he was more than impressed with her take on the song.
“What I loved so much about it was the vibe and the feel, which was just magical and transported me. Your voice, your tone was so slinky and ethereal and felt like this [lavender] smells. It was peaceful, but also musically daring,” the EGOT winner gushed. “You made so many great melodic choices because you changed almost the entire melody. Do you write a lot of your own original material?”
“I only just started taking music seriously a few years ago,” she revealed. “I actually taught myself guitar using YouTube. I never showed anybody that I could sing.”
This cemented Legend’s impression of her. “For me, you can sing and you have a point of view and you have a story to tell and I think that’s really beautiful and it’s really fun for me to work with artists like that, so I would love to work with you,” he gushed. “It would be a joy.”
Horan was equally stunned by LVNDR and stated that he initially was considering turning his chair well before she got through the first verse. “That was something special,” he told the 27-year-old. “I was thinking, ‘Do I let her finish the first sentence before I press the button or what?’ Because I just love character, and you’ve got it in abundance.”
“I felt like I was watching a movie and listening to a soundtrack. To say that you’ve been nurturing this in your bedroom just playing the guitar off YouTube, everything you said, I kind of did the same thing,” he continued. “Those voices that when you’re facing away and you get get goosebumps and your ears perk up — because we’re over there staring at that wall staring and hoping that someone catches your attention, and you absolutely did that.”
While it was a tough decision for LVNDER, she ultimately picked the former One Direction member to be her mentor.

Throughout his blockbuster career, drag icon RuPaul Charles has built a personality on being the big, boisterous glamazon who fans have become accustomed to seeing on RuPaul’s Drag Race. But now, Ru is ready to let fans see the person behind the makeup.
In a video posted to his Instagram on Wednesday (Oct. 4), RuPaul announced his upcoming memoir, The House of Hidden Meanings. Set to release on March 5, 2024, the memoir will follow RuPaul as he recounts the story of his life, from pre-fame childhood poverty in San Diego all the way to his global renown today.
RuPaul made it very clear in his announcement that the book also dives into aspects of his life he’s never shared before. “I’m so excited and so anxious at the same time because I reveal so much of myself,” he said in the candid video, sporting a cap and hoodie. “This world today, it feels so hostile, and it’s such a scary place to be vulnerable in. But I did it. So get ready.”
In the caption of the post, Ru continued to underline the exposure in the new memoir. “Writing this book left me gooped, gagged and stripped raw,” he wrote. “I’ve learned that vulnerability is strength, but so far, all I feel is nervous as hell, yet super excited to share it with y’all. When all is said and done, it’s just me, Ru.”
This won’t be RuPaul’s first time flexing his writing skills. The House of Hidden Meanings marks Ru’s fourth book, preceded by his 1996 autobiography Lettin It All Hang Out, his 2010 style guide Workin’ It!: RuPaul’s Guide to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Style, and his 2018 self-help guidebook GuRu.

Jason Mraz has never had a No. 1 on the Billboard 200, though he has got agonizingly close (on multiple occasions).
On Tuesday night, Oct. 3, the U.S. singer, songwriter and guitarist felt the fresh air at the top of the tree following his second round performance on ABC‘s Dancing With The Stars.
Mraz and his dance partner Daniella Karagach did a Rumba to “Quizas, Quizas, Quizas” by Andrea Bocelli featuring Jennifer Lopez, and got the judges moving and grooving to their efforts.

The judges awarded the pair 24 out of 30, equaling the night’s (and season’s) best, also notched on the evening by Marvel star Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy, who danced to Camila Cabello’s “Don’t Go Yet”.
Mraz is now joint leader. First, no doubt, feels great for the two-time Grammy Award winner who has landed two top 10s on the Billboard Hot 100, and five top 10s on the Billboard 200, including two No. 2s — for 2012’s Love Is a Four Letter Word and 2014’s Yes.
The three eights awarded by the DWTS judges is an improvement on the three sevens awarded for week one, when Mraz and Karagach strutted out with a Cha Chat to “I Feel Like Dancing,” one of his own songs.
In June, Mraz released his eighth studio album, Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride, and, last month, issued the 15-year anniversary Deluxe Edition of We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. We Deluxe.
He’s competing for the Mirrorball Trophy, now in its 32nd season and renamed in honor of the late head judge Len Goodman.

One celebrity no longer in contention is Jamie Lynn Spears, Britney Spears’ younger sister.
On Tuesday, Spears and her dance partner Alan Bersten performed a Cha Cha to “Shake Senora” by Pitbull featuring T-Pain and Sean Paul. The routine didn’t cut it.
When fan votes and judges scores were counted, Spears was eliminated.

The Voice has found another one.
Teen Kaylee Shimizu showed up big time during her Blind Audition Tuesday night (Oct. 3), with a performance that carried the confidence of youth, and the skills of a professional.
Hailing from Ewa Beach, Hawaii, Shimizu covered the Beatles’ “Golden Slumbers,” peppering it with elite high notes — all stability and control — and with more runs than a track and field event.

The 17-year-old gave us feathery touches, through to the dynamite, and earned a four-chair turn.
John Legend turning first, followed immediately by Niall Horan, Reba McEntire and, after a pause to soak it up, Gwen Stefani.
“We’re just stunned right now. Your voice was just dazzling, it was so creative it was so musical,” remarked Legend. “You know you could win The Voice, right,” he added, before rolling out the red carpet for Team Legend. “You have so much confidence delivering these impossible notes.”
Stefani was “blown away.” The youngster’s “vibrato, it’s so slow,” and it “feels like you have so much control over that,” she added. “I’ve never heard anything like that before and I think it’s because you’re so young and free.”
Horan, as a member of One Direction, has enjoyed several lifetime of experiences. “I cannot believe what I just witnessed,” he enthused. “That was just unbelievable. When we talk about ‘technically gifted,’ I’ve never met anyone so gifted. The song choice was perfect.”
Speaking last, McEntire admitted, “when I was 17 I had not the imagination to be even think about singing like you. I’ve never heard anybody do what you did on stage today. It was spiritual to me.”
Shimizu digs her “soulful R&B” and grew up singing karaoke with her Filipino family, who were invited to join the contestant on center stage.
There could be only one team for Shimizu, and that was Team Legend.
