‘SNL’s Bowen Yang Talks ‘Moulin Rogue’ Sketch With Ariana Grande: ‘It Was Just So Fun To Do It’

Saturday Night Live‘s Bowen Yang dropped by Late Night With Seth Meyers on Monday night (March 11) to deconstruct his hilarious Moulin Rogue spoof with Ariana Grande on this weekend’s SNL. “That was very fun,” Yang said of the bit with his Wicked co-star in which they imagined what the movie musical would have been like if director Baz Luhrmann had been able to grab the rights to some other popular songs.

“No play, she’s a real friend,” Yang said, adding that someone had asked him backstage if he was intimidated to sing with the pop diva. “I was like, ‘it never occurred to me’… that I was singing with her and that I should be intimidated. She’s so disarmingly wonderful and great and it was just so fun to do it,” he said.

Yang also told a hilarious performing skills origin story about how as a kid he used to haunt the Dance, Dance Revolution game on display at his local Best Buy, which was, naturally, situated next to the Costco at Park Meadows Mall in suburban Colorado. The game was set up in the middle of the store and Yang said he’d compete with the staff to see who had the slickest, fastest feet.

Trending on Billboard

“And all these, like, 25-year-old goths were shaking in their boots when this 14-year-old Asian kid would walk into the store and everyone would scurry,” Yang said. “Because I was about to hand their asses to them dancing to Kylie Minogue!” The SNL breakout star said he would go every week and by the third month he had developed his well-deserved DDR ass-kicking reputation.

It was such a formative experience that Yang said he thinks he could play the Super Bowl halftime show, because, like his DDR clinics, he’s used to having an audience behind him. “Because it’s a 360 stage and I’m performing to the people behind me,” Yang boasted.

Yang also talked about his instant classic “Bowen Straight” sketch from two weeks ago in which the out comedian made out with host Sydney Sweeney and actress Gina Gershon. “I gotta tell you guys something. You know when you have a head injury and you can’t see colors quite right?” Yang said. “I feel like I got hit in the head by these two women and I’m still a little straight… I understand why Austin Butler talked like Elvis for a while after the movie. I think for a couple more weeks I’m still straight… ladies get in there!”

The first part of the Wicked musical will open in theaters on Nov. 27.

Justin Timberlake Hijacks Jimmy Kimmel’s Monologue, Debuts Upbeat Dance Jam ‘No Angels’

Looking late night ready in a pin-striped white jacket, black pants and crisp white shirt, Justin Timberlake pinch-hit for 2024 Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel on Monday night (March 11), subbing in for the late night host’s monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live! The multi-hyphenate singer who returned later to perform he debut of his upbeat new single “No Angels,” alerted the crowd that he would be in charge for the evening.

“I’m going to be your host tonight, Justin Timberlake,” he said. “Now you all might know me from being… Justin Timberlake.” The singer then went into some light Oscars bits, including a joke about the last time he saw that many stars, when “[*NSYNC bandmate] Joey Fatone elbowed me in the face!”

Things got a little weird when Kimmel came out and confronted JT about stealing his monologue. “I’m confused, why are you here?” Jimmy asked Justin. “I’m the guest host,” Timberlake insisted. “No, you’re the musical guest, why would I need a guest host?” Kimmel explained.

Trending on Billboard

“Because you were out all night at the Oscar after party,” JT said, making a drink tipping gesture. “No, not really. I went to one party then I went to bed,” Kimmel said. “That’s so sad,” Timberlake winced, since he had a whole presidential debate bit planned, before showing off his decent Trump and Biden impersonations and thanking his “second favorite Jimmy.”

JT was back later in the show to perform the world premiere of the Everything I Thought It Was track “No Angels.” The upbeat dance jam is classic JT, riding a propulsive bass throb, sweet falsetto soul vocals and lyrics about sexy attitudes and sweaty dancing. “Like full throttle, pilot on auto/ There ain’t no angels here on the dance floor/ Forget tomorrow, more like you wanna play/ There ain’t no angels here on the dance floor,” Timberlake sang on the song’s chorus. EITIW comes out on Friday (March 15).

‘The Voice’: Ronnie Wilson Delivers ‘Unbelievable’ Audition With Zayn’s ‘Pillowtalk’

Books, as we know, shouldn’t be judged by their cover. Ronnie Wilson reminds us not to judge someone by their day job.

On Monday night (March 11), Wilson stepped into the bright lights of NBC’s The Voice’s blind auditions and shone right back with his rendition of Zayn’s “Pillowtalk”.

Wilson’s soulful cover was a showcase of control, range, emotion. The full package.

John Legend turned first, then Reba McEntire. Though Dan + Shay and Chance The Rapper were clearly enjoying the art, their chairs didn’t budge.

The 28-year-old singer is proud and out, originally hailing from South Carolina, and now calls Atlanta, GA home.

“That was unbelievable,” Shay Mooney remarked after the performance.

Trending on Billboard

There was more “unbelievable” to come. Wilson pointed to his influences from gospel and “a lot of country music.” And when he’s not he’s blowing minds, he’s counting beans.

Wilson is a full-time accountant, a vocation that no-one saw coming.

In a previous life, Legend too was “crunching numbers, making Powerpoint presentations” as a management consultant, a fun fact he hoped would find a connection with the hopeful. “I know what that’s like,” he articulated.

“You created moments by being creative with the melody, you made the song your own and made it a competition song by the way you did it,” Legend explained. “I just feel like you’ve got fresh taste, great ideas musically and stylistically,” he continued. “I feel like you’re going to do so well on the show.”

Not to be left out, McEntire leaned on her 50 years in the country game. “You have a quality in your voice that just makes a person feel good,” she remarked. “You’re absolutely wonderful.”

In the end, there could be only one coach. Wilson went with Team Legend.

Trisha Yearwood & Questlove Added to ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ Sequel

Trisha Yearwood and Questlove are the latest stars to join the cast of This Is Spinal Tap 2, which is now in production more than 40 years after Rob Reiner’s original rock music mockumentary premiered in 1984.

The sequel will find Reiner both reprising his role as Martin “Marty” Di Bergi and returning to direct, with Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer stepping back into their characters as the titular heavy metal band. Previously confirmed cameos include Garth Brooks, who is married to Yearwood, as well as Sirs Paul McCartney and Elton John.

Plotted by Reiner and the main cast, Spinal Tap 2 will pick up 15 years into Spinal Tap’s apparent hiatus, with the band deciding to reunite for one final concert. Shooting in New Orleans reportedly began in February.

Trending on Billboard

Regarded as the first-ever mockumentary, Reiner’s original cult classic focused on the fictional rock trio as they embarked on their 1982 U.S. tour in support of their controversial Smell the Glove album. In 2002, it was named as a “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” film by the Library of Congress and was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry.

In a December interview with Billboard, Brooks teased that the sequel would boast a “few other surprises” in addition to its A-list cameos. “If you think you have laughed before, Jiminy Christmas …,” he said at the time. “First of all, I was in love with Spinal Tap, in love with the original movie. The fact that it’s coming back, it’s gonna be neat to be a part of this. Because this is history, man.”

Lady Gaga Slams Transphobic Trolls Disparaging Dylan Mulvaney: ‘This Kind of Hatred Is Violence’

If you come for one of Lady Gaga‘s Little Monsters, then she’s going to bring her claws out. A few online trolls found that out the hard way on Monday (March 11) when Gaga shared a lengthy retaliation against critics of Dylan Mulvaney.

In an Instagram post, Gaga — who recently posed for a photo with the transgender influencer in honor of International Women’s Day — called out a wave of commenters who flooded Mulvaney’s post with anti-trans rhetoric. “It’s appalling to me that a post about [International] Women’s Day by Dylan Mulvaney and me would be met with such vitriol and hatred,” she wrote.

The “Born This Way” singer went on to share that news outlets shouldn’t be calling the transphobic response to Mulvaney a “backlash,” and instead refer to it for what it is: “Hatred is hatred, and this kind of hatred is violence,” she wrote. “‘Backlash’ would imply that people who love or respect Dylan and me didn’t like something we did. This is not backlash. This is hatred.”

Trending on Billboard

This isn’t the first time Mulvaney has found herself in the eye of an anti-trans publicity storm. Following a promotion she did with Bud Light in 2023, both the influencer and the brand received a massive influx of hatred, resulting in a boycott of Bud Light led by artists such as Kid Rock, Ted Nugent and others. Mulvaney later criticized the beer brand for turning “a blind eye” to the vitriol she received from their promotional clip. “For a company to hire a trans person and then not publicly stand by them is worse than not hiring a trans person at all,” she said.

In her post, Gaga took the opportunity to speak about the “immense work” that still needs doing when it comes to transgender acceptance around the world. “I feel very protective in this moment, not only of Dylan, but of the trans community who continues to lead the way with their endless grace and inspiration in the face of constant degradation, intolerance, and physical, verbal, and mental violence,” she wrote. “I certainly do not speak for this community, but I have something to say. I hope all women will come together to honor us ALL for International Women’s Day, and may we do that always until THE DAY that all women are celebrated equally.”

Closing out her post, Gaga urged her audience to “honor the complexity and challenge of trans life,” and once again reminded people to use the proper phrasing when speaking about transphobic speech. “I love people too much to allow hatred to be referred to as ‘backlash.’ People deserve better.”

Mark Ronson Reveals Ryan Gosling’s ‘I’m Just Ken’ Was Almost Cut From ‘Barbie’: ‘Greta Had to Fight’

Ryan Gosling‘s performance of “I’m Just Ken” was arguably the most show-stopping moment from the 2024 Oscars, but according to Mark Ronson, it almost never happened.

In an interview with The Sunday Times ahead of the Academy Awards Sunday (March 10), the executive soundtrack producer of Barbie revealed that the over-the-top, satirical ballad was almost didn’t make it into the final cut of Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster 2023 film, much less the Oscars lineup.

“At that first screening the song wasn’t working,” Ronson, who co-wrote “I’m Just Ken” with Andrew Wyatt, told the publication. “I panicked. The humor wasn’t translating.”

Trending on Billboard

“Greta had to fight,” he continued. “The studio asked her how much she really needed it and she said, ‘With every inch of my body.’ And then there was a big swing.”

In the film, Gosling croons about his “blond fragility” in multiple settings and costumes, backed up by dozens of fellow Kens who also feel misunderstood in Barbie Land. Joined by Ronson, Guns N’ Roses’ Slash and Wolfgang Van Halen, the actor translated the sequence to a flamboyant stage performance at the 2024 Oscars in Los Angeles Sunday night, in celebration of the tune’s best original song nod. (The award ended up going to another Barbie song, Billie Eilish and Finneas’ “What Was I Made For?”)

Shortly after Barbie‘s theatrical release in July, “I’m Just Ken” reached No. 87 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Gosling a first-time charting musician on the ranking. In January, the tune won best original song at the Critic’s Choice Awards.

“Ken is ridiculous,” Ronson added to the publication. “But Greta’s point was that nobody should ever be laughing at a character. We feel their pain, as crazy as that sounds, about a guy wearing a white mink and two pairs of sunglasses. I never wanted to write a song for a cheap laugh. You want something to get under people’s skin.”
