Jamaican artist Shenseea talks about her second album, the real inspiration behind her songs, why the dragon is an important symbol to her, her son and how she loves to dress him, writing music to help and relate to other women, her previous big collaborations with Major Lazer, Kanye West, Christina Aguilera and more!

ShenseeaIt’s just like me coming back stronger than ever because I’ve been through a lot for the past two years. I’m going to be riding a dragon, don’t tell nobody. Hey guys, it’s your girl Shenseea and you’re watching Billboard News.

Tetris KellyHey it’s Tetris with Billboard News, I am being blinded by the star power today from my girl, Shenseea.

Tetris KellyYou picked the great time to come by.

ShenseeaYes!

Tetris KellyYour new album is about to come out very soon, ‘Never Gets Late Here.’ How are you feeling?

ShenseeaI’m feeling really good. You know, I’m excited. It’s my second project. So a little bit nervous. But you know, because you know, you set a tone with the first one. And you should always try to beat the first one. So it’s a little bit pressuring. But I’m still excited and just going with it nonetheless,

Tetris KellyWell, let’s talk about the title first ‘Never Gets Late Here.’ What does that referencing, it means?

Shenseea It means to me, timeless music you can put on this album, and it just never gets old. You know, it’s pretty deep. And I love timeless music. That’s the type of music that I grew up on. And that’s the type of music I think that lasts and really inspires great artists to come. And I want to be able to do that as well, because I’ve been inspired by many great artists.

Tetris KellyThat’s a great goal to set out on.

ShenseeaYes.

Billboard takes a look back at the past Women Of The Year honorees at Billboard Women In Music event.

Katy Perry:I like to be viewed as a strong woman and I think that’s what Billboard is basically saying.

Tetris Kelly:Every year, Women in Music honor some of the best to ever do it and none more important than our Woman of the Year. Today we’re discussing a few of them, including the youngest to ever win. The girl power has never been stronger.

Katy Perry:I was also a bit surprised because I thought my year was over.

Tetris Kelly:2012 was the year Katy Perry wrapped up her California Dream Tour earned her seventh No. 1 song on the Hot 100 and took home Billboard’s Woman of the Year.

Katy Perry:I don’t really like to call myself a role model for my fans, but I hope that I am an inspiration for them, especially young women.

Tetris Kelly:In 2015, Lady Gaga ventured into jazz, acting and became Billboard’s Woman of the Year.

Lady Gaga:What I really want to say is that it is really hard sometimes for women in music. It’s like a f–king boys club that we just can’t get into.

Tetris Kelly:Giving an inspiring speech with a bit of humor.

Lady Gaga:Sorry, Grandma.

Tetris Kelly:But ultimately, keeping it real.

Lady Gaga:I might not be a lot of things but I can write songs and I can sing.

Tetris Kelly:Four years later, Billy Eilish took home the honor, the same year she released her debut album.

Billie Eilish:It’s really weird to be a Woman of the Year at 17.

Tetris Kelly:Billie became the youngest artist to be named Woman of the Year

Billie Eilish:Women who in the past have like, done what they weren’t supposed to do, has made my life a lot easier and made me able to do what I want and be what I want.

Tetris Kelly:What will happen this year when we honor Karol G? Tune into Women in Music March 7 at 5pm PT on BillboardWomenInMusic.com

Hailing from Bath, England, PinkPantheress has quickly morphed into a global phenomenon thanks to her sleek, catchy blend of U.K. garage, drum and bass and bedroom pop. After a couple of minor hits on TikTok back in 2021, the “Break It Off” singer parlayed her proclivity for viral success into a world-conquering Ice Spice-assisted smash and a terrific debut LP.
An acclaimed producer in her own right, PinkPantheress co-produced every track on Heaven Knows — just one of many reasons she was a clear choice to be honored as Billboard Women in Music‘s Producer of the Year for 2024.

PinkPantheress first made her Billboard Hot 100 debut with the hit single “Boy’s A Liar, Pt. 2” (with Ice Spice). Although it was just her first entry on Billboard’s marquee singles chart, the track flew all the way to a peak of a No. 3. As “Boy’s A Liar, Pt. 2” scaled the charts, PinkPantheress’ production contributions netted her a No. 12 peak on Hot 100 Producers.

Trending on Billboard

Over on the Billboard 200, she has charted a pair of titles. In 2021, her To Hell With It mixtape — which featured early hits “Break It Off” and “Just for Me” — reached No. 73 on the ranking. Two years later, Heaven Knows — her debut album, featuring “Mosquito,” “Boy’s A Liar, Pt. 2” and “Nice to Meet You” (with Central Cee) — peaked at No. 61. PinkPantheress has also found some noteworthy success on Billboard’s genre charts. On Hot Rock/Alternative Songs, she has four career appearances, including “Break It Off” (No. 30) and the Willow-assisted “Where You Are” (No. 22).

With her career already yielding such impressive returns, it’s clear that PinkPantheress’ Producer of the Year honor is just the beginning for the young multi-hyphenate.

Luke Hemmings talks about his new solo song “Shakes,” stepping out on his own as an artist, finding his own sound, feeling nervous about performing on his own for the first time, what he wants fans to learn about him from this new solo project, whether the 5SOS guys have heard his new solo songs and more!

Luke Hemmings:All these emotions I have inside of me … get get them out. And I think I’ve learned that I’m a very emotional person. And I think I have something to say, as an artist of my own. Hey, it’s Luke Hemmings, and this is Billboard News.

Rania Aniftos:Everybody, it’s Rania Aniftos, and welcome back to Billboard News. We have such an exciting guest in studio today: We have the one and only Luke Hemmings! Welcome.

Luke Hemmings:Hell yeah, thank you. Thanks for having me.

Rania Aniftos:So the new single — “Shakes” — it sounds so great. I love this next era for you. Tell me a bit about the inspiration behind it, the songwriting process.

Luke Hemmings:“Shakes” was written, like, maybe a year ago, at this point, and started in New York. I already had, like, a few ideas for the album from, like, writing on the road. And, like, a lot of it was written in hotels and, like, planes and all the sadm boring places. That’s where a lot of it came from.

Rania Aniftos:Introspective places.

Luke Hemmings:Very introspective. And this was written, the chorus was written in New York, and it was like experimenting with pitching my voice. That’s why the chorus kind of sounds like me, but it also has like other layers of like pitch vocals. Anyway, very boring nerdy stuff. But I was getting, like, more, I don’t know, just trying out stuff. So experimenting with different perspectives.

The first album was very, like, coming from what I … my experiences, and like, how I see things. So I was like, let’s try something else, not thinking that it would turn out to be the first single. And then, like, nine months later, wrote the verses for it. And yeah, I was trying to just listen to a lot of like, The Verve, and Blur and M83 and Beachouse and stuff. So that’s kind of where the inspiration came from.

But the way I write things for this project is very chaotic. So it will be like, I’ll write a piece here. And then, like, won’t write anything, the rest of it for, like, nine months. So it’ll, like, turn out to be this mishmash of, I don’t know, a story, but it still has that same emotion and feeling.
