Billboard Reveals the Top 10 of the Best 500 Pop Songs of All Time (Staff List) | Billboard News

Tetris Kelly:
It was August 4th, 1958, the Billboard Hot 100 was born. In honor of the chart’s 65th anniversary, Billboard staff has been putting together a huge list of the Top 500 Best Pop songs, everything from Tony Bennett to SZA, The Kinks to The Chainsmokers, Chubby Checker to *NSYNC. And now we’re revealing the Top 10, coming to you from the people who put the list together. Here’s the Billboard Top 10 from the 500 Best Pop Songs of All Time.

Joe Lynch:
Let’s kick off the Top 10 with The Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”

The Beatles are the group that turned rock music into the new pop music. They combined the rock and roll of early rockers like Little Richard and Chuck Berry, melded it with girl group singles, and the result was “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” It became the first Beatles song to top the Billboard Hot 100. This was the song that had a generation of teenagers losing their minds, screaming in the streets, ripping their clothes off. The Beatles were the original boy band and this is the song where all that started.

Andrew Unterberger:
Coming in at our No. 9 spot Tupac featuring Dr. Dre, “California Love.” This was a song that the last 10 years West Coast rap had been leading up to. You know, Dr. Dre had been the best producer for about a decade. Tupac had been the best rapper for about a half-decade. Then, Tupac gets out of jail. He comes to Death Row Records. He gets a Dr. Dre beat and they make “California Love.” It’s one of the best rap songs of the decade and it does what all the best rap songs do is that it’s super local to the West Coast, but it’s super global in its appeal. We talked about what rap songs should certainly be the highest on this list and “California Love” is sort of the beginning of the era where rap music could be pop music. Today, rap is the most popular music on the globe, it’s more popular than pop even. At its heart, pop stands for popular and this was the most popular music at the time. And it was the No. 1 hit and it’s a song that everybody still remembers.

Mitski Holds TikTok Billboard Top 50 Lead as Future & Drake Have Big Debuts | Billboard News

Mitski holds onto No. 1 on the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart, while Future and Drake make major moves.

Mitski holds onto the top spot while two new songs make the top 10 of the TikTok Billboard Top 50.

Mitski’s “My Love Mine All Mine” is the No. 1 track yet again on the TikTok Billboard Top 50 for the chart posting Oct. 19. The emotional connection is strong for users posting with this song.

Future’s 2016 track “Wicked” lands at No. 2 thanks to a new trend that’s got fans wiggling.

And Drake may have claimed seven of the top 10 on the Hot 100 this week, but he took third when it comes to the TikTok Billboard Top 50 with”IDGAF” featuring Yeat, thanks to everyone loving Drake’s part, while the rest of the Top 10 is full of familiar faces.

Jharrel Jerome Explains Why He’s Releasing Music ‘Packs’: ‘Album Culture Is a Little Dead’

Jharrel Jerome has been making his way into hip-hop, releasing two EPs this year — Rap Pack and Trip Pack — after working on music for the better part of the past decade. The Moonlight actor sat down for the latest episode of Billboard News to talk about why he’s dropping music in this way, the deeper meaning behind his project and what his future in film looks like.

“I’ve been writing music for a long time, and I want to prove that with what I release — I’m talking maybe six or seven years of me in the studio creating records I never released. The reason I’m releasing it in packs like this is because I believe album culture is a little dead right now,” he explained of his rollout process. “Instead, I want to dish it out in a way that’s digestible and understandable. For me, I want to make sure at the end of it all, I’m not just an actor-turned-rapper, but that I’m an artist. And I want people to not only see that I’ve been doing it for a long time, but to believe that I’ve been doing it for a long time.”

The EPs are part of a greater project that Jerome is working on titled Someone I’m Not. The actor explained that the title has multiple meanings, pertaining to his career on film, as well as how he’s perceived on the outside. “[The title]’s a play on the profession that I do in my career, embodying something that I’m not and transforming into a character that I have to create, but to me the irony is also how it correlated to my real life as well,” he stated. “My life changed dramatically in the last few years of my life. I’m still trying to adjust … I’m not all the way ready to be [a certain person] to somebody, so here he or she is viewing me as somebody I’m not.”

As for Jerome’s acting career, he is very much interested in keeping himself open to starring in more movies, but is choosing to be selective with what he invests his energy in. “I feel like I got spoiled early by being a part of projects that are culturally so impactful. I think when you receive a chance like that you don’t wanna go back,” he said of his past projects, which includes Full Circle, When They See Us and more. “You don’t wanna do anything less. I would never quit acting; I’m very selective and I want the role to challenge me and I want to be 45 and look at my credits and be like ‘Damn, I was patient and I was willing to do the harder things.’”

Jharrel Jerome shares how he’s telling his story through his Rap Pack and Trip Pack EPs as well as through the short films he made for them, his biggest music influences growing up, how he picks his roles for acting projects and more!

I got it word for word. I wrote it down.

He’s like, “I told you I’m an actor right? That was a monologue I memorized.”

Hey, what’s up? I’m Jharrel Jerome, and this is a Billboard News.

It’s Tetris with Billboard News, and I’m hanging out with Jharrel Jerome, a busy man. How’s it going?

Jharrel Jerome:
I’m good. Thank you for having me.

Tetris Kelly:
Let’s talk about this project, “Someone I’m Not.” That’s a hell of a title. So tell me what it means.

Jharrel Jerome:
For me, the title was as multiple things, it’s very layered. First, I’m an actor. So it’s a play on the profession that I do in my career, embodying somebody that I’m not and transforming into a character that I have to create.

But then, to me, the irony is also how it correlates to my real life as well. My life changed dramatically. In the last few years of my life, I’m still trying to adjust, I’m still trying to get used to certain things and used to certain dynamics. When I step out in the street, somebody might, you know, I might be dressed like this all decked out as someone who might be like, “Yo, that’s that guy from that movie. Oh, let’s, let’s take a picture — let’s do that.” But really, maybe I just got an argument with my mother or something. So I’m not all the way ready to be that figure for somebody and so he is viewing me or he or she is viewing me as someone I’m not.

Hi Guys, it’s Tetris Kelly for Billboard News. It’s Tuesday, October 17th. And what do we got? First, it’s Britney’s book. Britney is on the cover of People and sharing her story for the first time on her own terms, Britney’s new book arrives next Tuesday, but she talked to People ahead of the release, explaining what inspired her to write ‘The Woman in Me.’ She said, “Over the past 15 years or even at the start of my career, I sat back while people spoke about me and told my story for me. After getting out of my conservatorship, I was finally free to tell my story without consequences from the people in charge of my life.”

She even shared excerpts from the memoir, like when she shaved her head: “Shaving my head and acting out were my ways of pushing back. But under the conservatorship I was made to understand that those days were now over. I had to grow my hair out and get back into shape. I had to go to bed early and take whatever medication they told me to take.” How the conservatorship made her feel about performing: “As far as my passion for singing and dancing. It was almost a joke at that point.”

And even shared that she had an abortion while dating Justin Timberlake because he didn’t want to be a father, writing: “Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives that we were way too young.” People reached out to a rep for Justin but did not receive an immediate response. Britney will tell her story on her own terms when ‘The Woman In Me’ comes out on October 24.

Five albums in, and what made this album different than the ones prior?

Ryujin:
We talk about the confidence a lot, but this time, we talked about the darkness inside so we could love ourselves because we defeated the darkness inside. So I think [it] is a big difference from previous album.

Tetris Kelly:
That’s such a good message. What are some of your favorite tracks? I want to know — I’m sure everybody has a different opinion. So what’s your favorite track on the album?

Chaeryeong:
“Psychic lover.”

Ryujin:
Oh, I love that song too.

Yuna:
And mine is “Bratty.”

Yeji:
My pick is “None of My Business.”

Lia:
Mine’s also “None of My Business.”

Tetris Kelly:
Oh. Why is that one so personal to you? You think?

Lia:
From the first time I listened to it, I really liked the song. Like, the vibe of the song is very easy listening. It’s kind of a good song to drive and just listen to.
