Tetris Kelly
It’s Wednesday, October 25th. We’re back with more Billboard News. I’m Tetris Kelly and I’m addicted to Britney’s new book, especially the audio version. “His band *NSYNC was what people back then called ‘so pimp.’ They were white boys, but they loved hip-hop.” There have been so many more revelations as Britney released her memoir on Tuesday, with some of the biggest about her relationship with Justin Timberlake. Well, one moment is going viral, all thanks to an Oscar-nominated actress.

Tetris Kelly
The Internet is exploding after fans listened to Michelle Williams’ narration of Britney’s ‘The Woman In Me,’ specifically this clip of the actress went viral on X. “J got all excited and said so loud, ‘Oh yeah, fo shiz, fo shiz, Ginuwiine. What’s up, homie?” The J she’s referring to is none other than Britney’s ex Justin Timberlake. One fan summed it up perfectly, posting “five-time Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams saying ‘fo shiz, fo shiz, what up homie’ is art.” And another pointed out the obvious: “I cannot believe we are living in a reality where Michelle Williams saying ‘fo shiz’ exists.” I don’t know about y’all, but I cannot wait for the remixes to start rolling out.

D4vd:
It was, like, at a press conference, everybody had their phones up playing the same clip. And it was, like, SZA sitting down saying, “The D4 emo music guy.” Oh, like that’s me. They’re talking about me! You know it’s so fire.

Hey, everybody! I’m d4vd, and you’re watching Billboard News.

Lyndsey Havens:
Hey, I’m Lyndsey Havens for Billboard News. And we are here with genre agnostic, I’m gonna say singer-songwriter D4vd. It’s so good to have you here.

D4vd:
Thank you for having me.

Lyndsey Havens:
You’ve been on quite the run this year.

D4vd:
Quite the sprint.

Lyndsey Havens:
“Sprint,” that’s a better word. So if you think about it just a few years ago, I’m picturing you recording vocals in your sister’s walk-in closet. And this year alone, sold-out tour, two EPs. If you had to describe what 2023 has been like for you, how could you put into words?

D4vd:
Absolutely “blessed roller coaster.” Like, front-row seat on a roller coaster. Honestly, and it goes this way, it goes that way, it goes every which way. It’s honestly just been a wild ride.

Lyndsey Havens:
Has there been one moment that has surprised you the most?

D4vd:
SZA tour honestly. Honestly, it was like, months and months of seeing her to this moment. And I was just completely like, starstruck. It wasn’t even real to me when I heard the news.

Yeah she really wanted to help with releasing her book, all to kinda look back at her life and see how she was over protected and you know and see it in the context.

Tetris Kelly
The movies creators Tamra Davidson and Anne Carli even spoke about how the label at the time wanted her to record music after Pepsi commercials and movie shoot days. And even Britney told them, “But I have to.”

Anne Carli
And I said guess what you don’t have to do.

Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” finally hits No. 1 on the Hot 100; it’s her 10th career No. 1 and the first one from her 2019 album ‘Lover.’ Taylor was also seen this weekend supporting and giving good luck to her favorite NFL tight end Travis Kelce while several other high-profile NFL tight ends celebrated National Tight Ends Day. Bad Bunny gets to live out his best Little Monster dreams as Lady Gaga introduces him on ‘Saturday Night Live.’

Tetris Kelly
Mr. Bunny was introduced by Mother Monster during his stint on ‘SNL’ and most of his fans know he’s a massive fan of Lady Gaga. If you look, you can see how happy he was even on stage after the intro and, can somebody give this man a second to get his breathe? Even during the closing credits, he couldn’t help but freak out for a hug. We gotta love when somebody we’re a fan of is a fan too. Bad Bunny has a lot to celebrate. He’s No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with his new album. As for the Hot 100, one of my faves made it to the top.

Marshmello Discusses Debut Latin Album ‘Sugar Papi’ & Reveals What He’s Working On Next

Although Marshmello has proven his cross-genre appeal by topping the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Pop Airplay charts over the course of his career, the producer scored a long-awaited first in 2023: a No. 1 single on the Latin Airplay chart for his unexpected hit with Manuel Turizo, “El Merengue.” The tropical single was the first new endeavor in a year full of them for the veteran producer, who on Nov. 3 will release Sugar Papi, his first Latin album and first full-length that features an artist on every song.

“I’ve always been eager to make a body of work [but] wasn’t sure when the right time was,” he tells Billboard News. “Sony Latin reached out to me and was like, ‘Hey, would you like to do a Latin album?’ I’d always wanted to tap into Latin music and it just seemed like a perfect time for us to knock out the album I’ve always wanted to do…It was a no brainer.”

Sugar Papi is filled with Latin music legends and rising stars, from Nicky Jam and Anuel AA to Young Miko and Tiago PZK. And while most songs are rooted in Latin rap, trap and reggaeton, nothing was off-limits in the studio, with Marshmello setting up sessions in Miami to meet with each artist. “I showed up in Miami to write this album and was like, ‘I don’t have anything prepared,’” he recalls with a laugh. “Part of my job, my main job, is on the spot creation.” That quick-thinking helped him and his collaborators finish the entire album in less than two weeks.

“I wasn’t just going to go and make this huge ‘every big artist in the world’ [project], I was just going to work with the artists that I vibed with,” he says, noting he was particularly fond of his sessions with Young Miko. “She just showed up and was so nice and humble, killing everything I’m showing her. In the vault, there’s two other songs that we did and it’s straight rave music, old ’90s like Eiffel 65…Crazy crazy vibes. There’s a lot of songs in the vault that could pop up. “

That wasn’t all that Marshmello had to say about what’s ahead, teasing more on the way. “I don’t know if I’ve said it publicly but I’ve been in the studio this whole summer writing a new album, kind of redefining what Marshmello is,” he says. “I just had some sessions recently where I had some Latin touches…I could definitely see a lot of elements that I’m learning [returning].”

Marshmello on Creating His First Latin Album, Working With Young Miko & More | Billboard News

Chart-topping DJ, producer and songwriter Marshmello talks about diving into Latin music; the process of creating his first Latin album, Sugar Papi; working with Young Miko; the success of his track “El Merengue” with Manuel Turizo and more!

Marshmello:
It was interesting. I kind of showed up to Miami to write this album and I was like, “I don’t really have anything prepared.” Part of my job, my main job, is on-the-spot creation.

Lyndsey Havens:
Yeah.

Marshmello:
Just making it, you know what I mean? Making it work. Yo, what’s up? It’s Marshmello and this is Billboard News.

Lyndsey Havens:

Marshmello:
What’s going on?

Lyndsey Havens:
What’s up, man?

Marshmello:
Chilling.

Lyndsey Havens:
You’re no stranger to our charts. We have a lot of firsts to talk about with you right now. You have a major label debut album coming out: Sugar Papi, first Latin album, first proper album, new artists on every song.

Marshmello:
First album, yeah, a major label album.

Lyndsey Havens:
Tell us a bit about how and when the idea for this album even came about.

Marshmello:
I’ve always been eager to kind of make a body of work. I wasn’t sure when the right time was. Sony Latin reached out to me and was like, “Hey, would you like to do a Latin album?” And I’d always wanted to tap into Latin music and it just seemed like a perfect time to first knock out the album that I’ve always wanted to do and Latin and everybody was so cool and so nice. It was a no-brainer.

Lyndsey Havens:
Did you ever think that Latin would be your first album?

Marshmello:
Even though I wasn’t putting out Latin songs, over the years, I just befriended so many people, so many Latin artists. I knew it would happen, I just wasn’t sure when and it was just kind of sent by the universe.

Lyndsey Havens:
Yeah. I mean, what conversations did you have with Sony Latin about the appetite for this right now?

Marshmello:
I wasn’t just gonna go and make this like, huge, every biggest artist in the world on a Latin album, like, I’m just gonna work with artists that I vibe with, and that I just like, genuinely like their music, you know? And so I think, like, you’ll see, like, on the tracklist and who I worked with, you’d be like, OK, like, just, like, a good vibe.

Maya:
Well, we’ve been inspired by a lot of groups but maybe TLC, Destiny’s Child and Spice Girls. The evolution of girl power.

Jurin:
I think the fundamental haven’t changed.

Maya:
It hasn’t changed I agree, I agree.

Jurin:
I think defining yourself in a certain way.

Maya:
Don’t limit yourself.

Jurin:
Yeah not being bound by any boundaries or anything like that is what I believe is the fundamental aspect of girl power.

Whenever I decide on an outfit, I always try to project the image I want to become. For today’s Billboard interview, I went with something a bit more mature and colorful and added a bit of playful touch.

Destiny’s Child, TLC and Aaliyah. I love them. I love new challenges, and I like to set my mind to something and just get on with it. So I call myself Active Gal.

Well for me personally it means having my own style and loving myself. I think that’s what girl power is.

Harvey:
We all have very different personalities and things we really like. Each of us have to remember what we’re really into. Taking time to do what you like to do? I think we are doing that individually. I’m the same with COCONA and HINATA but I also try to draw pictures. I also like to read books and do other things that I really like.
