Beyoncé, Rihanna Among Winners From Night One of NAACP Image Awards

The 2023 NAACP Image Awards is announcing winners in several non-televised categories via streaming presentations all week long leading up to the live ceremony.

During night one, hosted by actor Khleo Thomas, the NAACP presented a number of awards in the outstanding recording categories. Presenters included Crystal Renee Hayslett, Echo Kellum and Jotaka Eaddy.

On Monday night, Beyoncé took home the most awards, including outstanding female artist, outstanding soul/R&B song for “Cuff It” and outstanding album for Renaissance. The next top winner was Chris Brown with two awards for outstanding male artist and outstanding duo, group or collaboration (contemporary) with Wizkid for “Call Me Every Day” from his album Breezy.

Rihanna also picked up a win for outstanding music video/visual album for her song “Lift Me Up” from the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Other notable winners include Silk Sonic for outstanding duo, group or collaboration (Traditional) for “Love’s Train,” Black Panther: Wakanda Forever for outstanding soundtrack/compilation album, Quavo and Takeoff for outstanding hip hop/rap song for “Hotel Lobby,” and Erica Campbell for outstanding gospel/Christian song for “Positive.”

Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar tied for the most nominations in the music recording categories, with five, respectively. RCA Records/RCA Inspiration also received the most nominations across record labels, with 11 noms.

The NAACP will continue to recognize winners in non-televised categories virtually at 5 p.m. PT through Thursday, and at an awards dinner and program on Friday. Then on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET, the 54th NAACP Image Awards will air live on BET from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

PinkPantheress Challenges Miley Cyrus For U.K. No. 1

Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” (via Columbia) is on track for a sixth U.K. chart title, though PinkPantheress might have other plans.

PinkPantheress’s viral hit “Boy’s a liar” (Warner Records) climbs to No. 2 on the midweek U.K. chart, and is hot enough to give Cyrus’ “Flowers” a duel in the second half of the chart cycle.

“Boy’s a liar” is already a career-high for the hotly-tipped British singer, songwriter and producer, soaring 8-3 on the most recent chart, published Feb. 17, doing so in its ninth week. It’s powered by a new cut featuring rising U.S. newcomer Ice Spice.

Meanwhile, Cyrus’ “Flowers” leads the Official Chart Update, and, if it holds its course, will log a sixth consecutive week at No. 1. It’s already the longest-reigning No. 1 single of 2023 so far.

Further down the chart blast, Nigerian musician, rapper and singer Rema eyes his highest-ever position with “Calm Down” (Mavin), set to climb 8-5; Dutch EDM star Tiësto and Canadian singer-songwriter Tate McRae’s “10:35” (Atlantic/Ministry of Sound) is set for a new peak, up 10-7; and Emerging Artists Chart champ Coi Leray’s is chasing a first top 10 berth with her viral rap number “Players” (Uptown/Republic Records), up 11-8.

The highest new entry on the Official U.K. Singles Chart should belong to Niall Horan, with “Heaven” (Capitol), lifted from the former One Direction singer’s forthcoming third solo album, The Show. “Heaven” is set to bow at No. 12. Since the members of 1D went their separate ways in 2015, the Irishman has logged two U.K. top 10 singles, and one albums chart crown, for 2020’s Heartbreak Weather.

Finally, following her performance on the BBC’s The Graham Norton Show, Pink’s “Trustfall” (RCA), the title track to her latest, ninth studio album, is set to lift 37-11, for what would be a new peak position. The Philly native should see a bump for album track “Never Gonna Not Dance Again,” which flies 39-19 on the chart blast.

All will be revealed when the Official Chart is published Friday.

Pink’s ‘Trustfall’ Racing to No. 1 In U.K.

It’ll take something special indeed to stop Pink from claiming the U.K. albums chart crown, as Trustfall (via RCA) sets the early pace.

Pink’s ninth studio album takes a strong lead at halfway stage. According to the Official U.K. Charts Company, Trustfall is outpacing its nearest rival by almost two-to-one, to lead an all-new top four at the midweek marker.

Should it hold its course, Trustfall will give the Philadelphia native her fourth U.K. chart leader, following Funhouse (from 2008), Beautiful Trauma (2017) and Hurts 2B Human (2019) — and third in succession.

With Pink all set for a return to the road, the pop superstar’s 2010 career retrospective Greatest Hits – So Far!!! is on track for a return to the top 40, blasting to No. 34 on the Official Chart Update.

Coming in at No. 2 on the latest chart blast is Inhaler’s Cuts & Bruises (Polydor), the Irish rockers’ sophomore effort.

It’s the followup to It Won’t Always Be Like This which, in 2021, saw Inhaler become the first Irish act to top the Official Chart with their debut LP in 13 years.

Meanwhile, Welsh rock act Those Damn Crows are swooping for a first U.K. top 10 appearance with Inhale/Exhale (Earache). It’s new at No. 3 on the chart blast. Those Damn Crows made their debut on the U.K. chart with 2020’s Point of No Return, peaking at No. 14. 

Also eying a top 5 debut is Optical Delusion (London Music Stream), the latest serving from the veteran British electronic duo Orbital. Optical Delusion is tracking for a No. 4 start, for what would be the pair’s fourth top 10 album in the U.K., and first in nearly a quarter century; their last was 1999’s The Middle of Nowhere, which reached No. 4.

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Albums Chart is published late Friday.

Harry Styles Drinks Out of His Shoe at Australia Concert

Harry Styles treated himself to a big gulp out of his own shoe in Perth, Australia, Monday night (Feb. 20).

While making casual conversation with the crowd in between songs at HBF Park, Styles seems to have decided that this particular Love On Tour stop was the perfect time partake in an interesting Australian drinking tradition: doing a shoey.

To do a shoey, one must pour alcohol into one’s shoe — not water, as Styles learned Monday night — and chug it.

“Does anybody have a drink that they wouldn’t mind lending?” Styles asked fans in the audience and then pondered, “Can we do a shoey with water or is that against the rules? No?”

Before dumping a drink into his mouth straight from his shoe, which appears to be the Adidas x Gucci Gazelle sneaker, the Harry’s House hitmaker commented, “This is one of the most disgusting traditions.”

Post Malone and Kacey Musgraves are among the fellow music arts to have joined in on the Australian rite of passage on previous tours.

Madonna shared a new photo of herself staring down the camera on Twitter Monday (Feb. 20). The pop icon is dressed casually in the picture, wearing ripped jeans, a jacket and a black cap reading “SPIRITUALLY HUNGRY,” with her hair styled in braids.

At the Grammys earlier this month, the singer had introduced Sam Smith and Kim Petras for a performance of their Grammy-winning “Unholy.” Following the telecast, her speech was seemingly overshadowed by her appearance, as people on social media shared their opinions about how different she looks in 2023, throwing out accusations about botched plastic surgery.

Two days later, Madonna fired back at critics with an Instagram post: “It was an honor for me to introduce Kim Petras and Sam Smith at the Grammys,” she wrote. “I had wanted to give the last award which was Album of the year, but I thought it was more important that I present the first trans- woman performing at the Grammys— a History making moment!! And on top of that she won a Grammy!! Instead of focusing on what I said in my speech which was about giving thanks for the fearlessness of artists like Sam and Kim- Many people chose to only talk about Close-up photos of me Taken with a long lens camera By a press photographer that Would distort anyone’s face!! Once again I am caught in the glare of ageism and misogyny That permeates the world we live in. Katy Perry, Lionel Richie & Luke Bryan Brought to Tears Over Audition in Tribute to Willie Spence on ‘American Idol’ Premiere

Spence, the Georgia singer who placed second on the 2021 season of American Idol, died in October 2022. He was only 23 years old.

“We grew a very, very close friendship … Losing Willie was just very, very hard for me,” Monée, a singer from Texas who performed a duet of Rihanna and Mikky Ekko’s “Stay” with Spence during Hollywood Week in 2021, said on Sunday’s Idol episode. “He passed in a tragic car accident and I’m still trying to cope with that.”

Through tears, she said, “Willie, he always told me, ‘No matter what, you’ll always be a singer.’ Three days before he passed, Willie was telling me, ‘You have to go back. You have to chase your dream. I’m gonna go with you to American Idol.’ He made me want to do it and I’d really love to make it further. But most of all, I wanna make Willie proud.”

“He was actually supposed to be here with me today for my audition,” Monée told judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. “It’s just very hard to not have that support anymore. But I know he would want me to be here … The song that I’m singing today is a song that we picked together. I’m singing ‘I’m Here’ from The Color Purple.”

Perry, Richie and Bryan were visibly moved by Monée’s performance of “I’m Here,” and agreed that the singer would be advancing on to the next round in the competition.

“That’s how you sing through crying,” Perry commented, leading the trio of judges in a standing ovation for Monée.

Richie wiped away his own tears, handed Monée a handkerchief and embraced her in a hug. “What you’ve given us was everything we’ve been trying to tell all of these kids,” he said. “That performance was so emotional, so heartfelt, so divinely guided in the glorious name of our dear brother Willie.”

“I’ve lost some people in my life. When you go to sing, you just sing like Willie’s still here,” Bryan noted.

“It was on another level. It was so connected to the pain, and everybody’s feeling this loss but we also feel connected together because you are authentic, just like he was,” Perry added.

Huey ‘Piano’ Smith, Session Man and Hitmaker, Dies at 89

Huey “Piano” Smith, a beloved New Orleans session man who backed Little Richard, Lloyd Price and other early rock stars and with his own group made the party favorites “Don’t You Just Know It” and “Rockin’ Pneumonia and Boogie Woogie Flu,” has died. He was 89.

His daughter, Acquelyn Donsereaux, told The Associated Press that he died in his sleep Feb. 13 at his home in Baton Rouge. She did not cite a specific cause.

A New Orleans native who performed nationwide but always returned to Louisiana, Smith was one of the last survivors of an extraordinary scene of musicians and songwriters who helped make New Orleans a fundamental influence on rock ‘n’ roll. He was just 15 when he began playing professionally and in his 20s helped out on numerous ’50s hits, including Price’s “Where You At?”, Earl King’s “Those Lonely Lonely Nights” and Smiley Lewis’ “I Hear You Knocking.” Little Richard, Fats Domino and David Bartholomew were among the many other artists he worked with.

In 1957, he formed Huey “Piano” Smith and the Clowns and reached the top 10 with “Rockin’ Pneumonia,” a mid-tempo stomp which featured the vocals of John Marchin and Smith’s buoyant keyboard playing, and the equally rowdy and good-natured “Don’t You Just Know It.” The Clowns also were known for “We Like Birdland”, “Well I’ll Be John Brown” and “High Blood Pressure.”

One Smith production became a major hit and rock standard, for another performer. Smith and his group wrote, arranged and recorded “Sea Cruise,” but Ace Records thought the song would have more success with a white singer — as Smith learned bluntly from local record distributor Joe Caronna — and replaced the Clowns’ vocals with those of Frankie Ford, whose version became a million seller.

“I was crying as he (Caronna) said that,” Smith told biographer John Wirt, whose Huey ‘Piano’ Smith and the Rocking Pneumonia Blues came out in 2014. “I had been drinking a little bit. It hurt me to my heart when he told me he was taking that.”

Artists covering “Sea Cruise” and other Smith songs included John Fogerty, the Beach Boys, Aerosmith and Jerry Garcia. In 2005, Ford would deny “stealing” the song, alleging that he had written the words. “Huey sorta went through a period and ‘forgot’ a lot of things,” Ford told Offbeat Magazine.

Smith’s popularity faded after the Beatles arrived and by 1980 he had quit the business, settled in Baton Rouge with his wife, Margrette, and become a Jehovah’s Witness. Like many rock musicians from the ’50s, he fought to be paid and credited for “Sea Cruise” and other hits and spent decades in legal battles and financial trouble. Local musicians, meanwhile, continued to cite him as an inspiration.

“To me he was the man who got more out of simplicity than anybody in New Orleans,” drummer Earl Palmer told Wirt.

In 2000, Smith received a Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation and he was honored a year later by the Louisiana Blues Hall of Fame. Admirers would cite him as one of the most vital performers not to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife, 10 children, 18 grandchildren and 47 great grandchildren, his daughter told the AP.

Smith grew up in the Uptown section New Orleans, his father a roofer, his mother a laundry worker. As a boy, Smith took up piano, learning by watching his uncle play, and he soon mastered the eight-bar progression that anchored countless blues songs. He played obsessively, sometimes to the annoyance of his neighbors, and in high school he helped start the band the Joy Jumpers.

He was still in his teens when he met another young New Orleans musician, Eddie Lee Jones, who as “Guitar Slim” influenced countless musicians and gave Smith his “Piano” nickname. Lewis’ own work initially drew upon the blues-boogie woogie of Professor Longhair. But he would eventually absorb a wide range of styles, whether the jazz of Jelly Roll Martin or the rock-rhythm and blues of Fats Domino.

“I took up to tryin’ a variety of music other than just one individual style,” he told Wirt. “I like my own style, but my own style is completely different than rhythm-and-blues, or calypso or any of that. It’s just deep down funk.”

Ariana DeBose Opens 2023 BAFTA Awards With Musical Performance

After winning the BAFTA supporting actress award last year for West Side Story, Ariana DeBose returned to open the 2023 ceremony on Sunday (Feb. 19).

The actress — also known for Hamilton and Westworld — performed an exclusive contemporary song inspired by this year’s nominees on stage at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Richard E. Grant serves as the host of the ceremony.

Alongside DeBose, Mercury Prize-winning artist Little Simz was also set to perform and will sing a track from her album, No Thank You. The pioneering hip-hop artist and actress — who has starred in Top Boy (which also stars this year’s BAFTA best-supporting actor nominee Micheal Ward) — has won MOBO, Ivor Novello and BRIT awards.

Last year, iconic Welsh singer Dame Shirley Bassey raised the curtain on the 75th edition of the BAFTAs with a rendition of the classic James Bond theme “Diamonds Are Forever” in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the film franchise.

All Quiet on the Western Front led the pack of nominees for this year’s BAFTA awards with a record-equaling haul of 14 nominations. Netflix’s acclaimed anti-war epic entered the Sunday ceremony competing for best film, director (for Edward Berger), adapted screenplay and supporting actor (for Albrech Schuch) alongside almost every single below-the-line category.

Megan Fox Comments on Sophie Lloyd’s Instagram After Shutting Down Machine Gun Kelly Cheating Rumors

Megan Fox is showing love to Sophie Lloyd amid rumors that the guitarist was involved in a cheating scandal with Machine Gun Kelly.

On Sunday (Feb. 19), the Jennifer’s Body actress left a lengthy comment on the “insanely talented” musician’s recent Instagram post and offered some words of wisdom amid the drama.

“How me making a joke in order to absolve this girl of a hurtful accusation somehow turned into a confirmation of it — I will never understand,” Fox wrote. “Why are people so…so dumb.”

The actress continued, “Sophie you are insanely talented. Welcome to Hollywood. Your first unwarranted PR disaster. You have now been baptized by the flames of fame. It only gets worse from here unfortunately.”

Fox closed her comment by advising Lloyd, who plays in MGK’s band, to “just ignore it as much as you can. Middle finger up.”

Lloyd replied to Fox’s comment, writing, “The internet is so wild! Sending so much love @meganfox.”

Earlier in the day on Sunday, Fox reactivated her Instagram account to share a note stating that there was no cheating involved in her relationship with the pop-punk star, who she got engaged to in January 2022.

“There has been no third party interference in this relationship of any kind,” she wrote. “While I do hate to rob you of running random baseless news stories that would have been much more accurately written by ChatGPT, you need to let this story die and leave all of these innocent people alone now.”

On Feb. 12, Fox deleted all of her Instagram photos with MGK and posted a video of a burning envelope with a caption quoting “Pray You Catch Me” from Beyoncé’s Lemonade, an album dedicated to the pain of being cheated on. Shortly after the post, she deactivated her IG account altogether.

The couple’s rumored split led some fans to speculate that Kelly had cheated on the actress with Lloyd. But the guitarist shut down those rumors in a prompt statement issued by her management team.

“Sophie Lloyd is a professional, accomplished musician who has been needlessly dragged into the media based off of meritless accusations made by social media,” read a statement on Feb. 15, according to People. “Any suggestion that she has ever acted in an unprofessional manner or stepped out of her relationship are untrue.”

“It’s disrespectful to her as a female artist and poor journalism and social commentary to be reporting anything else,” the statement concluded.

Kelly and Fox first met in spring 2020 while they were filming the movie Midnight in the Switchgrass in Puerto Rico. The pair began officially dating that summer and later got engaged in January 2022. Fox was previously married to actor Brian Austin Green, with whom she shares three young sons. Kelly has a teenage daughter.

Lauryn Hill, Diddy, Dave Chappelle & More to Headline 2023 Roots Picnic in Philadelphia

The 2023 Roots Picnic is returning to Philadelphia’s Mann Center on June 3-4 with headlining sets by Diddy with The Roots, Lauryn Hill celebrating the 25th anniversary of her Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album, and Lil Uzi Vert.

The three-day event, presented by The Roots and Live Nation Urban, will launch on June 2 with a stand-up comedy show and concert Dave Chappelle and The Roots at Philly’s Wells Fargo Center.

“Roots Picnic Weekend returns to Philadelphia June 2-4, 2023! We’re partnering with @livenationurban to bring you three days of black culture, music, comedy, and podcasts in one of the most beautiful cities in the world!!!!” organizers announced Monday (Feb. 20) on Instagram.

Other artists making an appearance throughout the annual hip-hop and R&B festival include Ari Lennox, City Girls, Maverick City, DJ Drama, Lucky Daye, Syd, GloRilla, Kindred the Family Soul, a State Property reunion, and a “live mixtape” from Black Thought featuring Busta Rhymes and Eve.

This year’s event will also include a podcast stage featuring Charlamagne Tha God, Off the Record with DJ Akademiks, Don’t Call Me White Girl, Lip Service with Angela Yee, People’s Party with Talib Kweli, and Questlove Supreme.

A fan club presale begins on Tuesday (Feb. 21) at 12 p.m. ET, with a general on-sale to follow on Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET through therootspicnic.com.
